中考英语试题

"Miss Smith! What rough (粗糙的) hands Mary Jessup has! "said Daisy Marvin, as she walked home from school with her teacher.

"In my opinion, Daisy, Mary's hands are the prettiest in our class."

"Why? Miss Smith, they are as red and hard as they can be. How they would look if she tried to play on a piano!" Daisy said.

Miss Smith took Daisy's hands in hers, and said, "Your hands are very soft and white, just the hands to look beautiful on a piano: yet they don't have one beauty that Mary's hands do. Shall tell you what the difference is?"

"Yes, please, Miss Smith." Daisy looked at Miss Smith, with eyes wide open.

"Well, Daisy, Mary's hands are very busy. They wash dishes; they make fires; they hang out clothes, and help to wash them, too: they are always trying to help her poor, hard-working mother."

Miss Smith continued, "Besides, they wash and dress the children; they mend their toys and dress their dolls; yet, they find time to bathe the head of the little girl who is so sick in the next house to theirs."

"They do good deeds (行为) to every living thing. I have seen them patting the tired horse and the homeless dog in the street. They are always ready to help those who need help."

"I shall never think Mary's hands are ugly any more, Miss Smith." Daisy said that with tears in eyes.

"I am glad to hear you say that, Daisy; and I must tell you that they are beautiful because they help others gladly and cheerfully."

"Oh, Miss Smith! I feel so ashamed of myself and so sorry, "said Daisy, looking into her teacher's face with shining eyes.

According to UNESCO, a large number of children in villages in some African countries like Kenya and Tanzania do not go to school. They have to work to make money for their family. And more than half of people in these countries live without electricity.

A company is now working to solve both of these problems. It has created a special solar ( 大阳的 ) power station, which is in the shape of a cow, called “Solar Cow”. The company encourages parents in those poor villages to send their children to school by setting up Solar Cows at schools.

Just as its name suggests, the Solar Cow can charge batteries ( 给电池充电 ) called “Solar Milks”. The Solar Milks provide electricity for the families.

The batteries can only be charged using the Solar Cow, so children have to go to school to get the electricity. Every day, children put their batteries into the bottom of their school’s Solar Cow. They go to class while the batteries are being charged. At the end of the day, they take the charged batteries home.

Each fully-charged Solar Milk battery can charge a mobile phone three or four times, or a radio once or twice. The battery is also a flashlight, and it can provide ten hours of light. “My father used to travel two to three hours to the charging shop to charge his phone, and it cost a lot,” a boy said. “But now, he can use the battery I bring from school to charge his phone at home.”

It’s always challenging to face fear. Here are some ways to help you overcome(克服)it.

Breathing

As we know, breathing can help us relax. If you purposely breathe out longer than you breathe in, your body will calm down. If you start to feel fearful, try this. Take a breath in (to a count of 7 in your mind), and then slowly breathe out (to a count of 11 in your mind). To your surprise, if you do this for a minute or so, you’ll calm down quickly. We call this "7/11 breathing".

Using a different part of your brain

When we feel fearful, it’s harder to think clearly. But if we force ourselves to use the part of thinking brain, this will help to calm us down. The easiest way to do this is with numbers. You can set your own fear from l to 10, 10 being the worst state and 1 being the most relaxed state. When you’re feeling fearful, ask yourself; “Okay, what grade do I get right now? 7 or 5?” Just doing this will reduce fear because it starts the thinking brain. Once I gave a speech to three hundred people and I felt fearful. So I graded myself at 6, and waited for myself to go down to 3 before starting. I took control.

Getting control of your imagination

Imagine seeing yourself in the situation you were scared, but see yourself being calm and things going well. Doing this starts to recondition your mind to more calmly face the coming events which were causing fear.

It seems that overcoming fear is always the first step to finish all you need to do and it will help you devote yourself to what you really want to be and to do. It takes efforts, but it’s worth your try.

When you think of the Arctic (北极), you imagine an icy land of pure white snow. Others imagine it as the last really clean place left on earth. We have polluted the deepest oceans with plastic rubbish. “And now”, CNN says, “It’s the Arctic’s turn.”

German scientists have recently found microplastics in Arctic snow. Microplastics are pieces of plastic smaller than 5 millimeters. Sadly, the scientists found 1800 pieces of microplastics per liter of (每升) snow.

How is plastic pollution reaching the Arctic? According to scientists, “It’s clear that most of the microplastics in the snow come from the air.” They fall off the plastic objects and are moved by the wind, just like dust. They mix with ice in the air and fall to the ground as snow. Finding these plastics in Arctic snow means that we may breathe them in.

Are they bad for us? Scientists cannot answer this question for now, according to the WHO. We do know that our bodies cannot take in “large” pieces of microplastics. However, if the plastics are small enough, they can find ways into our bodies and stay there for a long time, which can be bad for our health. What’s more, earlier studies have shown that microplastics may contribute to lung cancer risk.

Microplastics have also been found in rivers and oceans around the world. Earlier research has found that they flow over long distances and into our oceans, hurting ecosystems along the way. They start in our wastewater, then flow into rivers and out to the sea, where they are eaten by sea animals. If people then eat these animals, it means that we’re eating the plastic as well.
