DIY, which means Do It Yourself, is quite popular in the UK. Lots of stores and supermarkets sell DIY things. TV programs show people how to DIY.

English people like DIY. Some started to do DIY in the 1960s. There is a saying in the UK - "An Englishman's home is his castle (城堡)". About 5.6 million people spend their holidays making their homes beautiful "castles" every year. If there is anything that needs fixing around their homes, such as painting the walls or putting in a new shower, they will do the jobs themselves. They share DIY experience with their friends. More and more people enjoy the joy of DIY. Sometimes people also DIY to save money. With the economy (经济) becoming worse at present, many people don't have enough money to buy a big house. They are looking at how they can make their house better without spending a lot of money. It is not surprising that DIY is so popular.

    DIY can be difficult. There is a huge market for DIY furniture. People need to get together pieces of furniture with a few basic tools. However, people often find it not easy to build a piece of furniture because they can't understand the instructions. Sometimes the instructions are simple and clear, but the furniture itself is difficult to build. One thing is for sure, though most DIY projects are started with the best ideas, many of them may not get finished. DIY can also be dangerous. For example, anything electrical should be done by a professional worker. Unluckily, many people don't care about this warning and put themselves in danger. It is reported that in just one year 230,000 people were hurt while doing DIY in the UK.

Therefore, DIY can bring us fun and help us save money, but it is not always as easy as it looks. Maybe factories should make products that are easier and safer for us to DIY. All in all, it is a very good and suitable thing for many people.

Leaflet for Field Trip Day

On Friday, June 25, our class will take a field trip to North Park Zoo. The Zoohas lions, elephants, and other interesting animals. Many of the animals we are studying will be there for us to watch closely.

Our class will be divided into six teams. Each team will have five students and one leader. The leaders are listed in the table below.

What You Need to Know

On the morning of the trip, the students will be divided into teams. One student from each team will receive a camera. The camera person will take pictures of the team, the animals, and other fun sights at the zoo.

All the students should wear blue shirts. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes because we will be walking all day. Please bring a bag lunch and a drink. We will have a picnic at the park inside the zoo. Bring a healthy snack, such as a piece of fruit and a drink, for later in the day.

When we are at the zoo, always stay with your team. Do not leave the team without telling the team leader.

Feeding the Animals

The ONLY animals that students are allowed to feed are those in the Children's Zoo. Special food can be bought at the zoo for 5 yuan and given to these animals. Do not feed your lunch to them. It is not good for the animals.

    It is Sunday today. Ann is shopping with her mother. She wants her mother to buy a new sweater for her. In a clothing shop, she finds an orange one. She tries it on (试穿). It is too small. She wants a bigger one, but the bigger ones are not orange. Ann doesn't like other colours. Her mother asks:" Shall we go to another shop to have a look?" So they go out of the shop and go into another one.

    The second shop is bigger than the first, and in it there are many kinds of sweaters of different sizes and colours. Ann tries on an orange one. It is too big. She tries a smaller one. It is OK.

    "How much is it?" Ann's mother asks the women who sells clothes. Then they find it too dear (贵), and they don't have so much money with them.

    "Would you like a cheaper one?" The women asks.

    "No, we shall take this one. My daughter likes it. We will come back to buy it tomorrow." Ann's mother answers.

In English, the spelling of words does not always represent(代表)the sound. And some words seem to have too many letters. An American called Noah Webster wanted to do something for the development of English, so he began his work on it. His first book,  The Elementary(基础的)Spelling Book, suggested making the spelling of English words easy. The book was very popular. In fact, Webster is famous for his American Dictionary of the English Language. This dictionary came out in 1828 after it was completed. It introduced lots of new American words, with information about their pronunciation, use and the new spelling. Today,  Webster's dictionary is still widely used in English-speaking countries.
