Sleeping in Class

I can still remember it as if it happened yesterday. I was a college freshman and had____21____most of the night before laughing and talking with friends. Now just ___22___ my first class of the day my eyelids were feeling ___23___and my head was drifting down to my desk to make my textbook a ___24___. A few minutes’ nap time before class couldn’t___25___, I thought.

Boom! I lifted my head immediately and my eyes opened wider than saucers. I looked around with my heart ____26____ quickly trying to find the cause of the ___27___. He had ____29____ dropped the pile of textbooks he was carrying onto Ms desk. “Good morning!” he said, still smiling. “I’m glad to see everyone is ____30____. Now let’s get started.”

For the next hour I wasn’t sleepy at all. It wasn’t from the shock of my professor’s textbook_____31_____either. It was ____32____from the attractive discussion he led. I____33____the classroom not only wide awake, but a little ____34____and a little better as well.

I learned something far more important than ____35____ in class that day, too. I learned that if you are going to do something in this life, do it well, do it ____36____, and make it an ____37____ of your love. What a glorious place this world would be if all of us did our work joyously and well. What a beautiful world we could ____38____ if every doctor, teacher, musician, cook, waitress, poet, miner, farmer, and laborer made their work an expression of their love. Don’t sleepwalk your way through life then. ____39____! Let your love fill your work and your soul. Life is ____40____short not to live it well.

Recently some American scientists have given a useful piece of advice to people in industrialized nationsThey say people should eat more of the same kind of food eaten by humans living more than 10,000 years ago36_______

The scientists say that the human life has changed greatlyOur bodies have not been able to deal with these changes in lifestyle and this had led to new kinds of sicknesses37_______ So they are called "diseases of civilization"Many cancers and diseases of the blood system are examples of such diseases.

Scientists noted that people in both the Old Stone Age and the New Stone Age enjoyed very little alcohol or tobacco, probably none38_______  However, a change in food is one of the main differences between life in ancient times and that of today.

Stone Age people hunted wild animals for their meat, which had much less fat than domestic onesThey ate a lot of fresh wild vegetables and fruitsThey did not have milk or any other dairy products, and they made very little use of grains39________  We eat six times more salt than our ancestorsWe eat more sugarWe eat twice as much fat but only one third as much protein and much less vitamin C.

40________ But scientists say that we would be much healthier if we eat much the same way the ancient people did, cutting the amount of fatty, salty and sweet food.

AStone Age people lived a simple life.

BBut today, we enjoy eating a lot of these.

CIn that case, they would live much healthier.

DAncient people also got lots of physical exercise.

EThese new sicknesses were not known in ancient times.

FPeople today probably don't want to live like our ancestors.

GModern people used to suffer from "diseases of civilization".

Master Your Deadlines

The struggle begins in high school, sometimes earlier.Deadlines, and lots of them, start to pile up.At college, the pressure sometimes leads to last-minute rush and unsatisfactory work.At work, failing to meet deadlines can easily get you fired._36_.Here are a few best practices.

Assign deadlines to what matters.

If the task isn't of high importance, don't set a speci6c deadline. In this way,you are able to keep it on your radar for a while without feeling pressured._37_.This will provide just enough pressure to ensure you get it done.

_38_.

Set a personal deadline for yourself a day or two before the actual deadline._39_.If you're working with a group of people, add in even more time to account for potential follow-ups and the need for approvals.

Keep communicating.

_40_.This means letting others know when something is taking longer than expected, when a delivery didn't come in,when a client is not providing the necessary information, etc.Although it may feel embarrassing to admit that something is not on schedule, being honest is much better for relieving your stress.

A.Plan for flexible hours

B.Finish your project as early as possible

C.But if an activity is urgent, set a deadline immediately

D.In this way, you'll never have to stay up late and feel stressed

E.But handled properly, deadlines can actually improve productivity

F.Whenever you feel challenged to finish work on time, communicate

G.So if anything takes longer than expected, you can still wrap it up and submit it on time

Will you do me a favor and pick me up tonight?

    A.  My pleasure.                B.  With pleasure.

It encouraged us to visit Quora.com, the online question and answer community, to find out how users get te most out of every tank of gas.

   Light makes right

Alex Elderfield noted that excess weight prevents an engine from burning fuel efficiently. "Only carry what is essential in your car, clean out any junk or necessary items otherwise you are paying for the fuel to cart these from place to place," he wrote.

Driving smoothly – that is, not mashing the gas and then slamming the brakes later down the road – was a fixture of many responses. Quora user Clint Law agreed on that advice, who wrote, "Every little bit of kinetic energy that your brakes lose, your engine burned in fuel to build up." Overbraking should consequently be viewed as wasted acceleration. "That's really what kills your fuel economy," he argued.

Keep the pressure up

Keeping the recommended tire pressure for your car was another mantra among Quora users. Marlyn Rosent said she checked her tire pressure every time she filled up her SUV. Quora user Doug Dingus checks his tire pressure every weekend. “Less tire contact means reduced rubbing, requiring less fuel,” he said.

Air conditioning or windows

Though the summer heat get many drivers to roll up the windows and turn on the air conditioning, some people argued that running the A/C wastes too much gas. In between were many shades of grey.

Achilleas Vortselas said it would depend largely on a car’s speed. He wrote that as a general rule, people should drive with the windows down around the city and turn the air conditioning on when hitting the highway, where a car’s aerodynamic(空气动力的) characteristics would be influenced by opened windows.

More seriously minded people, however, said to travel as much as possible with windows up and the A/C off. Eddie Xue gets by with just a wisp of outside air. “Use the fan and open your windows every now and then at lower speeds," he wrote.

24. What can we learn from what Clint Law wrote?

   A. Overbraking is a waste of gas          B. Carry what we need in the car

   C. Build up energy to drive smoothly      D. Stepping on the gas freely can keep a balance

25. What do we know from Doug Dingus’ words?

   A. Checking tire pressure will require less fuel

   B. Filling up the SUV leads to reduced rubbing

   C. Keeping the recommended tire pressure is necessary

   D. Braking fiercely can keep wasting acceleration

26. The author says “In between were many shades of grey” to indicate that ________.

   A. rolling up the windows and turning on the air conditioning waste too much gas

   B. people should try their best to travel with windows up and the A/C off

   C. when a car approaches higher speeds, the A/C should come on

   D. there’s balance between the air conditioning and windows usage

27. Which is the suitable title of the passage?

   A. Fuel efficiency, straight from source

   B. Driving with the windows down and using the A/C

   C. How to save at the pump this summer

   D. Reducing the weight and increasing the vehicle’s fuel economy

Once a man asked a painter to painting a picture for him. He told the artist he didn't want to any shadows in the picture, just sunshine, but the artist did so. When the man saw the finished picture, he was disappointing. Without shadows, everything in the picture looks flat and unreal. The point of the story is that we need both shadows and sunshine to have a completely picture, just as we need both rain and sun to have living world. People, too, needs both sadness and happiness. We often learn important lesson during sad times. So when we feel sad, we should try to stop and think about that we might learn from the experience.

Memory, they say, is a matter of practice and exercise. If you have the wish and really made a conscious effort, then you can quite easily improve your ability33_________(remember) things. But 34_________ _________ you are successful, there are times when your memory seems to play tricks on you.

Sometimes you remember things that really did not happen. One morning last week, for example, I got up and found that I (35) _________ (leave) the front door unlocked all night, yet I clearly remember locking it carefully the night before.

Memory “tricks” work the other way as well. Once in a while you remember not doing something, and then find out that you did. One day last month, for example, I was sitting in a barber shop (36)_________ (wait) for my turn to get a haircut, and suddenly I realized that I had got a haircut two days (37)_________ (early) at the barber shop across the street from my office.

We always seem to find something funny and (38)_________ (amuse) in incidents caused by people’s forgetfulness or absent-mindedness. Stories about absent-minded professors (39)_________ (tell) for years, and we’ve never got tired of hearing new ones. Unfortunately, however, absent-mindedness is not always funny. There are times when  “trick” of our memory40_________  cause us great trouble.

Before going outside in the morning, many of us check a window thermometer (温度计) for the temperature. This helps us decide what to wear.      __36__ We want our food to be a certain coldness in the refrigerator. We want it a certain hotness in the oven. If we don't feel well, we use a thermometer to see if we have a fever. We keep our rooms a certain warmth in the winter and a certain coolness in the summer.

Not all the thermometers use the same system to measure temperature. We use a system called the Fahrenheit scale. But most other countries use the Centigrade scale. Both systems use the freezing and boiling points of water as their guide.    __37__

The most common kind of thermometer is made with mercury (水银) inside a clear glass tube. As mercury (or any other liquid ) becomes hot, it expands. As it gets colder, it contracts (收缩). That is why on hot days the mercury line is high in the glass tube.    __38__

First. Take a clear glass juice bottle that has a cap; fill the bottle with coloured water. Tap a hole in the center of the cap using a hammer and thick nail. Put the cap on the jar. Then stick a plastic straw (吸管) through the nail hole.     __39__

Finally. Place a white card on the outside of the bottle and behind the straw. Now you can see the water lever easily.      __40__

As the temperature goes down, the water will contract, and the lever in the straw will come down. Perhaps you will want to keep a record of the water lever in the straw each morning for a week.

AWe use and depend on thermometers to measure the temperature of many other things in our daily lives.

BThermometers measure temperature, by using materials that change in the same way when they are heated or cooled.

CNow that you know this rule you can make a thermometer of your own that will work.

DThe water will rise in the straw. As the temperature of the air goes up, the water will expand and rise even higher.

EThey label these in different ways. On the Fahrenheit scale water freezes at 32 degrees and boils at 212 degrees. On the Celsius scale water freezes at 0 degrees and boils at 100 degrees.

FTake wax (you may use an old candle if you have one) and melt some of it right where the straw is struck into the cap to seal (……粘住) them together.

GPeople use thermometers which are made by themselves when travelling around the world.

Being Left-handed in a Right-handed World

The world is designed for right-handed people, but why does a tenth of the population prefer the left?   71

The answer to it remains a bit of a mystery. Since scientists have noticed that left-handedness tends to run in families, it’s assumed that left-handedness has a genetic(基因的) component to it.   72   In fact, identical twins, who share the same genes, can sometimes prefer to use different hands. There are also plenty of theories on what else might determine which hand you write with, but many experts believe that it’s kind of random.

Historically, the left side and left-handedness have been considered a negative thing by many cultures.   73   In some areas, the left hand became known as the “unclean” hand. In many religions, the right hand of God is the favored hand. For example, Jesus sits at God’s right side. God’s left hand, however, is the hand of judgement. Various activities and experiences become rude or even signs of bad luck when the left hand becomes involved. In some parts of Scotland, it is considered bad luck to meet a left-handed person at the start of a journey.   74   A person giving directions will put their left hand behind them and even physically try to point with their right hand if necessary. In some Asian countries, eating with the left hand is considered impolite.

75   People come to realize that left-handedness is natural. People even noticed that many famous people are left-handed, including Benjamin Franklin, Leonardo Da Vinci, and Charlie Chaplin. Some researchers find out that lefties are more creative and can deal with abstract thinking better. The left-handedness is more easily adaptable to the right-handed world as well. Being left-handed is no longer a sad story now; instead, it is a wonderful gift or maybe it is something you should take pride in.

A. In other words, left-handers are born that way.

B. Left-handedness used to be regarded as a disability.

C. The unfavorable associations of the use of the left hand among cultures are varied.

D. Why do they prefer to use their left hand rather than their right hand for routine activities?

E. Why do some parents force their left-handed children to become right-handed when writing?

F. In Ghana, pointing, gesturing, giving or receiving items with the left hand is considered rude.

G. Fortunately, nowadays most societies and cultures no longer reject left-handedness like before.

          Vauban

We know cars are terrible polluters, but would you give yours up? Vauban, a community in southwestern Germany, did just that, and its 5,000 citizens are doing fine. Most streets are free of vehicles, and there are generous green spaces and good public-transport links, including fast buses and bicycle paths. When people must drive, they can turn to car-sharing clubs. “All the citizens had the chance to plan their own city,” says Andreas Delleke, an energy expert, “and it’s just how we wanted it to be. ”

Denmark

During the period of gas shortage in the early 70s, Denmark decided to become self-sufficient(自足). So they began a few projects making smart investments along the way.

On the island of Samsoe, local families, fishermen and farmers bought wind turbines(涡轮机) to produce their own energy, Within seven years these turbines were completely paid for. And can you believe just one of wind turbines produces enough electricity for 600 households?

           Trey Parker and Matt Stone

Trey Parker and Matt Stone, creators of South Park, have built a sustainable(可持续的) castle with outer siding and inner flooring of recycled wood, recycled carpeting, high-efficiency boiler systems.

“I think more and more today, people are willing to make a statement about the Earth and how they want to protect it,” Michael Ruth, home designer and builder says. “For high-end homes in this valley, this is entirely consistent with what they cost. ”

                    P-NUT

Who doesn’t love the name P-NUTshort for Personal-Neo Urban Transport? It’s Honda’s latest attempt to create a tiny footprint for a new urban vehicle.

This little P-NUT is unique. With a central driving position, the car is designed to move in tight settings. The 11-foot micro car will seat three with two rear-seat passengers behind the driver.

“The P-NUT concept explores the packaging and design potential for a vehicle designed for the city lifestyle. ” Said Dave Marek, a Honda design spokesman.

          Israel Company

Is it possible that annoying rush hour traffic could become a source of renewable energy?

Israel’s Technion Institute of Technology claims that if we placed special generator(发电机) under roads, railways, and runwayswe could harvest enough energy to mass-produce electricity. A trial process has been used on a smaller scale, in dance clubs for instance, where the pounding feet of dancers light up the floor.

“We can produce electricity anywhere there is a busy road using energy that normally goes to waste,” said Uri Amit, chairman of Israel’s Technion Institute of Technology.

                 Coffee

Coffee. Some of us can’t start our day without it, and we don’t mind waiting 10 minutes in line for it.

Here is the most effective tip to make you a superstar in environment protection.

Get a coffee machine for your home or coffee, or persuade your company into buying one. (Tell them it will improve productivity. ) Skip the coffee line on the way to work and make something that is better-tasting and much better for your wallet.

Plus, you won’t need those plastic cups or carrying cases that just get thrown away. Better yet, use your favorite travel mug.
