I'm seventeen. I had worked as a box boy at a supermarket in Los Angeles. People came to the counter and you put things in their bags for them and carried things to their cars. It was hard work.
While working, you wear a plate with your name on it. I once met someone I knew years ago. I remembered his name and said,
"Mr Castle, how are you?" We talked about this and that. As he left, he said, "It was nice talking to you, Brett." I felt great, he remembered me. Then I looked down at my name plate. Oh, no. He didn't remember me at all, he just read the name plate. I wish I had put "Irving" down on my name plate. If he'd have said, "Oh yes, Irving, how could I forget you?" I'd have been ready for him. There's nothing personal here.
The manager and everyone else who were a step above the box boys often shouted orders. One of these was: you couldn't accept tips. Okay, I'm outside and I put the bags in the car. For a lot of people, the natural reaction is to take a quarter and give it to me. I'd say, "I'm sorry, I can't." They'd get angry. When you give someone a tip, you're sort of being polite. You take a quarter and you put it in their hand and you expect them to say, "Oh, thanks a lot." When you say, "I'm sorry, I can't." They feel a little put down. They say, "No one will know." And they put it in your pocket. You say, "I really can't." It gets to a point where you almost have to hurt a person physically to prevent him from tipping you. It was not in agreement with the store's belief in being friendly. Accepting tips was a friendly
thing and made the customer feel good. I just couldn't understand the strangeness of some people's ideas.
One lady actually put it in my pocket, got in the car, and drove away. I would have had to throw the quarter at her or eaten it or something.
I had decided that one year was enough. Some people needed the job to stay alive and fed. I guess I had the means and could afford to hate it and give it up.

This Monday, the nation will start to celebrate Presidents’Day,just seven days before George Washington’s birthday.Everyone agrees that day is a holiday, but is it just to celebrate George Washington’s Birthday? What about Abraham Lincoln? Some government offices call it Presidents’ Day.Others say the holiday is officially Washington’s Birthday.Confused yet?
George Washington was elected the country’s first President on April 30,1789.Soon after,Americans began publicly celebrating his birthday.Presidential historians say the actual date of George Washington’s birth is February 11,1732.But a change in the calendar system 20 years later shifted all dates, making Washington’s birthday February 22,which is now well accepted. In 1879.Congress made Washington’s birthday an official federal holiday. It was the first federal holiday to celebrate an individual’s birthday. In 1968,Congress passed the Monday Holidays Act,which moved the holiday to the third Monday in February. The newlaw did not change the holiday’s name.It was still called Washington’s Birthday, even though some lawmakers wanted to call it Presidents’Day to include Abraham Lincoln, whose actual birthday is February 12.
Many people argue that the holiday should celebrate all past Presidents. They feel Lincoln should be honored for his role in preserving the nation during the Civil War and helping to free slaves.Others feel the holiday should only honor Washington.the countlry’s first President. They say shifting the focus away from Washington would mean future generations of kids would not know about the Father of Our Country.
Laws have been introduced in Congress over the years to require use of the term“George Washington’s Birthday.”but none of those laws have been passed.Meanwhile, many state governments and school districts now use the term“Presidents’Day.”Many stoles also use it to promote holiday sales.

I was a fat kid who grew into an overweight adult.I was constantly laughed at for being heavier than the other kids, leaving me feeling shy.I tried several diets, but none worked, and I ended up gaining weight.Another factor contributing to my weight gain was my love for cooking, especially rich, high-fat desserts, which I enjoyed preparing and, of course, eating.
When I finished high school at the age of 18, I weighed 215 pounds.Lacking the self-confidence to go to a new, faraway school, I decided to stay close to home instead of going away to college.I continued with my
unhealthful eating habits and felt more miserable as the weight came on, but I did nothing about it except buy larger plus-size clothes.
My turning point came 10 years later at a friend's New Year's Eve party when I was at my all-time highest weight of 330 pounds.I caught my reflection in a mirror and the truth hit me: I was overweight and unhealthy, and unless I did something about it now, I would only get bigger and unhappier.
After leaving the party, I thought about my past weight-loss efforts and realized they didn't work because they required me to give up foods I loved. Then I would constantly think about food and binge, abandoning the diet altogether. If I took a common-sense approach and ate smaller portions of all foods, I would be able to satisfy my hunger and not feel deprived.
My biggest challenge was finding a way to fit my passion for cooking into my healthier lifestyle. At first, I tried to stay away from the kitchen to prevent myself from thinking about food. The result: Food was all I thought about. There had to be some way to combine cooking with healthful eating.I found the solution after reading several low-fat cookbooks. With some trial and error, I could modify my favorite foods and make them low in fat, yet delicious.
The pounds started coming off, and when I started exercising (usually cardio and weight training five times a week), they seemed to melt away.I didn't feel deprived, and I felt free to give my body the care and attention it deserved.
I lost 165 pounds over the next two years.I had many ups and downs, but I was determined to go on.Another challenge to me was not to beat myself up if I ate something that was unhealthy and to take it as a sign to abandon my healthful habits.Instead, I vowed to start again and always keep my goal in mind.
Thanks to losing weight and becoming fit I am in line with my body and myself. My dream is to help others realize the ease and benefits of low-fat cooking and eating.I've created and published a book of low-fat recipes(食谱) and run workshops and seminars(研讨会) on healthful eating. Now that I know what I can achieve when I set my mind to it, my dreams are no longer out of reach.I have finally found myself.

There are two basic ways to see growth: one as a product, the other as a process. People have generally viewed personal growth 1 an external result or a product that can easily be identified and measured. The worker who gets a rise, the student 2 grades improve, and the foreigner who learns a new language — all these examples of people who have measurable results to show for their
3 .
By contrast, the process of personal growth is much more difficult to determine, since it is a journey and not the specific signposts or landmarks along the 4 . The process is not the road itself, but rather the attitudes and feelings people have, their caution or courage, as they meet with new experiences and unexpected difficulties. In this process, the journey never really ends; there are always new ways to experience the world, new ideas to try, new challenges to accept.
In order to grow, to travel new roads, people need to have a willingness to take risks, to face the unknown, and to 5 the possibility that they may “fail” at first. How we see ourselves as we try a new way of being is essential to our ability to grow. Do we see ourselves as quick and curious?
If 6 , then we tend to take more changes and to be more open to unfamiliar experiences. Do we think we’re shy and indecisive? Then our sense of fear can cause us to hesitate, to move 7 , and not to take a step until we know the ground is safe. Do we think we’re slow to adapt to change or that we’re not smart enough to deal with a new challenge? Then we are 8 to take a more passive role or not try at all.
These feelings of insecurity and self-doubt are both unavoidable and necessary if we are to change and grow. If we do not face and 9 these internal fears and doubts, if we protect ourselves too much, then we stop growing. We become 10 (trap) inside a shell of our own making.

What exactly is intelligence? There aren’t any easy answers. Despite the progress that has been made in genetics and psychology, human intelligence has remained one of the most controversial areas of modern science, until now, that is, for the discovery of a gene(基因) linked to intelligence has made the experts think again.
Robert Plomin of the Institute of Psychiatry in London and his colleagues in the US have been looking into genetic make-up. From their research, they have discovered that a slightly different gene is more common in those with a high IQ. Plomin analyzed DNA from two groups of 51 children aged between 6 and 15. What he found was that the first group had an IQ of 136, putting them in the top 5% of the population, while the other group had an average IQ of 103. An analysis of their genes showed that 32% of children in the higher group had the gene in question, while only 16% in the second group did. However, there is a lot more research to be done, and Plomin himself is cautious at this early stage. He suggests that there are probably many genes that contribute to intelligence, rather than just one.
Several studies have shown a strong link between IQ and career success, although some psychologists remain unconvinced about this. Professor Michael Rowe, who has written a book called Genius Explained, is one of these. “The people with the highest IQs are not usually the ones who do best in their careers.”
Many psychologists now believe that when it comes to intelligence, IQ isn’t everything. Many alternative views have been put forward recently. One example is the idea of multiple intelligences, which was developed in the 1980s by Harvard psychologist Howard Gardner. This offers a much broader view than the IQ theory, including creativity and communication skills as relevant factors(因素) in intelligence.
Tony Buzan, brain expert and author of Master your Memory, is enthusiastic about this belief, arguing that true geniuses(天才) do indeed appear to combine high levels of each type of intelligence. He lists Alexander the Great, Pablo Picasso and Albert Einstein as examples. At the same time, Buzan believes that everyone can develop their intelligence, only if they take the trouble to exercise their brain. Perhaps there’s hope for us all!

B. IQ benefits a lot from high intelligence.
C. How to develop intelligence.
D. What makes intelligence.
68. Why does the author use data in Paragraph 2?
A. To make a suggestion. B. To draw a conclusion.

69. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Robert Plomin confirms genes have something in common.
B. Howard Gardner thinks intelligence includes various factors.
C. Michael Rowe approves of a strong link between IQ and career.
D. Tony Buzan agrees geniuses exercise brain to improve intelligence.
70. What does the underlined word “This” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. The development of intelligence.
B. The idea of multiple intelligences.
C. IQ isn’t everything for intelligence.
D. Alternative views have been put forward.

The number of speakers of English in Shakespeare's time is estimated to have been about five million. Today it is estimated that some 260 million people speak it as a native language, mainly in the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Ireland, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. In addition to the standard varieties of English found in these areas, there are a great many regional and social varieties of the language as well as various levels of usage that are employed both in its spoken and written forms.
In fact, it is impossible to estimate the number of people in the world who have acquired an adequate working knowledge of English in addition to their own languages. The purpose for English learning and the situations in which such learning takes place are so varied that it is difficult to explain and still more difficult to judge what forms an adequate working knowledge for each situation.
The main reason for the widespread demand for English is its presentday importance as a world language. Besides serving the indefinite needs of its native speakers, English is a language in which some of important works in science, technology, and other fields are being produced, and not always by native speakers. It is widely used for such purposes as meteorological and airport communications, international conferences, and the spread of information over the radio and television networks of many nations. It is a language of wider communication for a number of developing countries, especially former British colonies. Many of these countries have multilingual populations and need a language for internal communication in such matters as government, commerce, industry, law and education as well as for international communication and for entrance to the scientific and technological developments in the West.
43. Which of the following statements is NOT true?
A. Some 260 million people in the world have an adequate working knowledge of English.
B. There are some 260 million native speakers of English in the world.

D. People learn English for a variety of reasons.
44. According to the passage, what is the main reason for the widespread use of English?
A. It was popular during Shakespeare's time.
B. It is used in former British colonies.
C. It serves the needs of its native speakers.
D. It is a world language that is used for international communication.
45. What forms an adequate working knowledge of English?
A. The ability to read a newspaper.
B. It is difficult to judge because it differs for each situation.
C. Being a multilingual.
D. Being a native speaker.
46. What type of developing countries would be most likely to use English?
A. Those geographically close to the United States.
B. Those interested in the culture of the United States.
C. Former colonies of Great Britain.
D. Countries where international conferences are held.

The other day I buy a pair of leather shoes in a shoe shop. The seller told me he would give “three guarantees” for the shoes. And only four days later, the shoes worn out. So I was angry and returned to the shop hoped to get my money back. I told the seller what had been happened to the shoes. When she knew that I had kept the shoes for four days, he refused, to which I was surprised. I asked him why he didn’t keep his promises. “Do you understand the ‘three guarantees’?” the seller said. “It means the shoes can only be kept in three days!” How a foolish explanation of the “three guarantees”!
