Detailed Guidance on Analytical Features
The definition of an analytical feature
Hard news is the kind of fast-paced news that usually appears in newspapers, magazines and some other mediums. Because each story in only relevant for a short time, writing must be concise and without excessive detail..Like a hard news story, an analytical feature also appears in newspapers; magazines or on the Web. However, an analytical feature covers a topic in some depth. It examines important issues or events in details, and provides more interpretation and background information for readers than hard news. Writing an analytical feature means looking for patterns, motives and outcomes that explain the event issue or problem.
An analytical feature should be based on an investigation of documents in the public domain-archives, libraries, scholarship, or local offices-and an interview with people with knowledge related to the topic.
Step-by-step guide to feature writing
1. Select a topic
2. Make a list of preliminary questions to establish what needs to be known about the topic. Ffere are some of the basic questions that a feature addresses.
●What is the problem?
●What institutions and people are involved?
●What is the standpoint?
●What causes the problem?
●What are the possible consequences?
3. List your sources--people: institutions, documents, books, articles that are likely to provide information and answers to your questions.
4. Refine your questions decide what you are going to look for in the written documents and what you are going to ask your potential sources.
5. Arrange your appointments, interviews or are, archival searches in a logical order, following the plan for your basic questions.
6. Conduct interviews Ly what information you are trying to get from each source.
7. Write and outline that sets up the structure of the feature.
8. Go back to your notes, organize information, compare and contrast data, analyze material, identify missing information, expand the list of sources, and conduct new interviews.
9. Write the feature
Analytical feature structure
THE INTRO: The most important function of the introduction is to make the readers want to read on.
THE BODY OF THE FEATURE: The content of the feature will vary depending on the subject matter, style of publication, supposed interests of the readers and intentions of the journals. The following points are what you should include in the body of your feature.
●Facts—include the mat appropriate points throughout the text rather than in chunks,
●Quotes-can bring writing to life, inject authority and powerful expression into the piece.
Think carefully which bits of your research to quote and which bits to translate into your own words, as the simple facts of a story do not normally need to be told through direct quotes.
●Description—Let the readers see what you are seeing, show rather than tell. Analysis-can be provided by experts who have conducted relevant research, but it may also be provided by ordinary people with direct knowledge and involvement. Your own analysis of the topic should be based on extensive research and supported by evidence.THL ENDING: Aim to provide a rounded ending of the text either in the form of a summary, a quote or a return to the scene of the introduction.

Recently, our school has carried out a survey about if students will do some part – time work during the winter holiday. 89% of the students said no. the reasons are like follows. First, their parents won’t allow them to do so. Second, they are so busy with their studies during the holiday which they can’t afford the time to do. Third, they are not sure which job they can do. Therefore, 11% of the students said yes. They plan to work during the winter holiday. They think working is a good chance to put what they have learned into the practice. Through work, they can gain lots of social experiences. In addition, by doing a part-time job to earning some money, they can reduce their parents economic pressure.
In my opinion, students should do some part-time work, which can enrich their life and help them know much about the society.
Our Fears Can Change the Reality of the Situation
At times, our worries and anxieties can defeat us. In addition, our worries can change our understanding of what is reality and what is not. Here is a brief list of techniques that you can use to help gain a better viewpoint on things during the anxious moments.

Remember that all the worrying in the world will not change anything. Most of what you worry about never comes true.__19___ Then you should leave everything else in the hands of God.
It is not easy to deal with all the fears and worries. When your fears and anxieties have the best of you, try to calm down and then get the facts of the situation. The key is to take it slow. All you can do is do your best each day, hope for the best, and when something does happen, take it easy.__20___
A. Take it one step at a time and things will work out well at last.
B. When feeling anxious, stop what you are doing and try to do something relaxing.

D. Instead of worrying about something that probably won’t happen, concentrate on what you are able to do.
E. The next time you fell depressed, review your list and think about the good things that you have in your life.
F. A good way to manage your worry is to challenge your negative thinking with positive statements and realistic thinking.
G. Completing these smaller tasks once at a time will make the stress more manageable and increase your chances of success.

The latest research suggests that the key factor separating geniuses from the merely accomplished is not I.Q., a generally bad predictor of success. Instead, it’s purposeful practice. Top performers spend more hours practising their craft. If you wanted to picture how a typical genius might develop, you’d take a girl who possessed a slightly above average language ability. It wouldn’t have to be a big talent, just enough so that she might gain some sense of distinction. Then you would want her to meet, say, a novelist, who coincidentally shared some similar qualities. Maybe the writer was from the same town, had the same family background, or shared the same birthday.
This contact would give the girl a vision of her future self. It would give her some idea of a fascinating circle who might someday join. It would also help if one of her parents died when she was 12, giving her a strong sense of insecurity and fuelling a desperate need for success. Armed with this ambition, she would read novels and life stories of writers without end. This would give her a primary knowledge of her field. She would be able to see new writing in deeper ways and quickly understand its inner workings.
Then she would practise writing. Her practice would be slow, painstaking and error-focused. By practising in this way, she delays the automating process. Her mind wants to turn conscious, newly learned skills into unconscious, automatically performed skills. By practising slowly, by breaking skills down into tiny parts and repeating, she forces the brain to internalize a better pattern of performance. Then she would find an adviser who would provide a constant stream of feedback, viewing her performance form the outside, correcting the smallest errors, pushing her to take on tougher challenges. By now she is redoing problems—how do I get characters into a room—dozens and dozens of times. She is establishing habits of thought she can call upon in order to understand or solve future problems.
The primary quality our young writer possesses is not some mysterious genius. It’s the ability to develop a purposeful, laborious and boring practice routine; the latest research takes some of the magic out of great achievement. But it underlines a fact that is often neglected. Public discussion is affected by genetics and what we’re “hard-wired” to do. And it’s true that genes play a role in our capabilities. But the brain is also very plastic. We construct ourselves through behavior.
56. The passage mainly deals with .
A. the function of I.Q. in cultivating a writer
B. the relationship between genius and success
C. the decisive factor in making a genius
D. the way of gaining some sense of distinction
57. By reading novels and writers’ stories, the girl could .
A. come to understand the inner structure of writing
B. join a fascinating circle of writers someday
C. share with a novelist her likes and dislikes
D. learn from the living examples to establish a sense of security
58. In the girl’s long painstaking training process, ________.
A. her adviser forms a primary challenging force to her success.
B. her writing turns into an automatic pattern of performance
C. she acquires the magic of some great achievement
D. she comes to realize she is “hard-wired” to write
59. What can be concluded from the passage?
A. A fuelling ambition plays a leading role in one’s success
B. A responsible adviser is more important than the knowledge of writing.
C. As to the growth of a genius, I.Q. doesn’t matter, but just his/her effort.
D. What really matters is what you do rather than who you are.

Sleeping in on Saturday after a few weeks of too little shuteye may feel refreshing, but it can give a false sense of security.
New research shows long-term sleep loss cannot be cured that easily. Scientists researched
the effects of short- and long-term sleep loss and found that those who suffer long-term sleep loss may function normally soon after waking up, but experience steadily slower reaction times as the day goes by, even if they had tried to catch up the previous night.
The research has important safety significances in an increasingly busy society, not just for shift-workers but for the roughly one in six Americans who regularly get six hours or less of sleep a night.
“We know that staying awake 24 hours without sleep will affect your performance to do all sorts of things, and this effect equals to drinking too much when driving,” said lead researcher Dr. Daniel Cohen of Boston’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital. But when those who suffer long-term sleep loss become all-nighters, “the harm is increased ten times,” Cohen said.
The National Institutes of Health says adults need seven hours to nine hours of sleep for good health.Regularly getting too little sleep increases the risk of health problems, including memory impairment and a weakened immune system. More immediately, too little sleep affects reaction times; sleepiness is to blame for car crashes and other accidents.
It has critically important complicated and unexpected results for anyone who works “crazy hours” and thinks they are performing fine with a few hours of weeknight sleep, said Harris, director at New York’s Montefiore Medical Center. “Don’t think you can just bank up your sleep on the weekend, because it doesn’t work that way,” he warned.

From the very beginning of school we make books and reading a constant source of possible failure and public humiliation. When children are little we make them read aloud, before the teacher and other children, so that we can be sure they "know" all the words they are reading. This means that when they don't know a word, they are going to make a mistake, right in front of everyone. After having taught fifth-grade classes for four years, I decided to try at all costs to rid them of their fear and dislike of books, and to get them to read oftener and more adventurously.
One day soon after school had started, I said to them, "Now I'm going to say something about reading that you have probably never heard a teacher say before. I would like you to read a lot of books this year, but I want you to read them only for pleasure. I am not going to ask you questions to find out whether you understand the books or not. If you understand enough of a book to enjoy it and want to go on reading it, that's enough for me. Also I’m not going to ask you what words mean. "
The children sat stunned and silent. Was this a teacher talking? One girl, who had just come to us from a school where she had had a very hard time, looked at me steadily for a long time after I had finished. Then, still looking at me, she said slowly and seriously, "Mr Holt, do you really mean that?" I said just as seriously, "I mean every word of it.
During the spring she really astonished me. One day, she was reading at her desk, From a glimpse of the illustrations I thought I knew what the book was. I said to myself, "It can't be," and went to take a closer look. Sure enough, she was reading Moby Dick , in the edition with woodcuts. I said, "Don't you find parts of it rather heavy going?" She answered, Oh, sure, but I just skip over those parts and go on to the next good part. "
This is exactly what reading should be and in school so seldom is,an exciting, joyous adventure. Find something, dive into it, take the good parts, skip the bad parts, get what you can out of it, go on to something else. How different is our mean-spirited, picky insistence that every child get every last little scrap of "understanding" that can be dug out of a book.

You are one of the most familiar faces in class, not because you are funny or have great note-taking abilities but because you ask the most number of questions. 36 It is important to have a good way to ask questions. Here are a few tips for improving your questioning skills:
Be clear about what you want to know.
Be clear about what you want to know and frame your question accordingly. 37 If you beat around the bush, your teachers won't be entirely sure what it is that you haven't understood, or need an explanation for.
38
If you are uncertain about a particular subject, make it clear when it is being discussed. If you put your question in context(语境), you can be sure of it.Because questions often open up new avenues within a subject, doing this would benefit the whole class.
Don’t hesitate to talk to your teacher after class.
39 Therefore, if you feel uncomfortable about asking a question in front of your classmates, wait till the class is over. This will probably put you more at ease.
Write down your questions.
40 They may appear when you're studying, reading or taking notes.Note them down on a piece of paper so that you won't forget to ask them later. This can also make sure that you don't have any unanswered questions when the exam approaches.
A.Don't ask more questions once a time.
B.Questions may appear at any time.
C.Being curious is not a bad quality.
D.You may think it is good to ask no questions.
E.Ask questions related to the context.
F.A question needs to be easy to be understood and to the point.
G.One-to-one interactions are always much better than one-to-many.
Counterfeit(假冒的) goods, or false versions of products, may cost the government of Kenya as much as $1 billion each year. The fake goods also hurt business owners who find it hard to keep customers. But information technology is being used to try to stop the problem. Jemima Mwafigu is a 34-year-old businesswoman who sells products like perfume. But in the first year of running her business, she found it hard to keep customers because of counterfeit goods.
Ms. Mwafigu says her business has improved since she began using a smart phone application called Barcode (条码) Scanner. The app is used to authenticate (验证) products. It checks to make sure the products are not counterfeit.
“With this application I'm able to scan the bar codes of each perfume and instantly I get the production date, the expiration date and I'm able to know the safety,” she says. “That way, I have confidence in selling to my customers.”
In 2010, Kenya created the Anti-Counterfeit Agency, or ACA, to fight against illegal trade. The ACA has successfully asked government officials for stronger punishments for counterfeiters.
Agnes Karingu is the agency’s acting director for research and awareness. She says the ACA is trying to stay one step ahead of those making fake goods.
“We are also looking into IT solutions where we can be able to use SMS programs, bar codes and information sharing,” she says. “The end users of the products will actually be able to get the authentication information, and this information comes back to ACA and intellectual property rights holders.”
The agency is testing another program called Allvirtuous. The application is another way to find out if a product is real or not by scanning its barcode. The barcode information is sent to a database. Then a result is sent back to the app.
The International Chamber of Commerce is a global business organization. It says the value of counterfeit goods produced around the world is expected to be more than $1.7 trillion (万亿) this year.
