The dogs’ ride only accelerated up to 7.5 miles an hour, and trainers could stop the auto using a remote control.

Kailua-Kona, Hawaii
Zoe the zebra’s markings are special. The animal has white and golden stripes. Zoe’s appearance resulted from a rare condition called amelanosis (黑素缺失症). Her body doesn’t make enough melanin, the substance in an animal’s skin and hair cells that produces color. “Only 25 other golden zebras are known to exist in the world,” says Ann Goody, who runs the wildlife refuge where Zoe lives. In the wild, life may be difficult for animals with amelanosis because predators (捕猎者) can easily spot them. But Zoe is protected at her refuge.

When I agreed to stage-manage my school’ s production of Guys and Dolls, I had no idea of 61 a stage manager acurally did. Still, I 62 (decide) that it would be a(n) 63 (interest) experience, and a way to get involved with theater. Besides, if there was already a director and some technicians to build the sets
and run lights, how much could there be 64 (leave) for a stage manager to do? I figured that I would spend a lot of time 65 rehearsals and scripts(剧本).
I was discouraged by the first rehearsal. I discovered that it was my 66 (responsible) to make sure that all of the cast actors were present, had scripts, and gave 67 (I) their schedules before leaving the room. It was not an easy thing. I found that it was impossible 68 (get) all twenty-five cast members together for a group scene, since actors kept 69 (call) me with emergency appointments, and last-minute family gatherings.
Finally, it was the opening night. I sat to the side of the stage, 70 my script open on a music stand in front of me. The lights came up, the show began, and I knew that it had all been wortthwhile.
One morning I wasted nearly an hour watching a tiny ant carry a huge feather. Several times, it 36 several obstacles in its path. And after a momentary pause it would make the necessary detour(绕道). 37 one point, the ant had to cross a crack about 10mm wide. After some 38 thoughts, the ant laid the feather over the crack, walked 39 it and picked the feather up on the other side, then continued on its way. I was 40 by the cleverness of this ant. It was only a small insect, lacking in 41 yet equipped with a brain to reason, explore, discover and overcome. 42 this ant, like the other two-legged creatures 43 on the earth, also shares human failings.
After some time the ant 44 reached its destination --- a flower bed and a small hole that was the entrance to its 45 home. It was there that the ant met its 46 . How could that large feather possibly 47 such a small hole? Of course, it couldn’t. So the ant, after all this 48 and using great brightness, overcoming problems all along the way, just gave up the 49 and went home. The ant had not thought the problem through 50 it began its journey and in the end the feather was 51 more than a burden. Isn’t our 52 like that?
We worry about our families; we worry about the 53 of money; and we worry about all kinds of things. These are all burdens --- the things we pick up along life’s path, and drag them around the obstacles and over the cracks that life will bring, only to 54 that at the destination they are 55 and we can’t take them with us.

Every year more people recognize that it is wrong to kill wildlife for “sports”.Progress in this direction is slow because shooting is not a sport for watching, and only those few who take part realize the cruelty and destruction.
The number of gunners, however, grows rapidly. Children too young to develop proper judgments through independent thought are led along way away by their gunning parents. They are subjected to advertisements of gun producers who describe shooting as good for their health and guncarrying as a way of putting redder blood in the veins. They are persuaded by gunner magazines with stories honoring the chase and the kill. In school they view motion pictures which are supposedly meant to teach them how to deal with arms safely but which are actually designed to stimulate a desire to own a gun. Wildlife is disappearing because of shooting and because of the loss of wildland habitat. Habitat loss will
continue with our increasing population, but can we slow the loss of wildlife caused by shooting? There doesn't seem to be any chance if the serious condition of our birds is not improved.
Wildlife belongs to everyone and not to the gunners alone. Although most people do not shoot, they seem to forgive shooting for sport because they know little or nothing about it. The only answer, then, is to bring the truth about sport shooting to the great majority of people.
Now, it is time to realize that animals have the same right to life as we do and that there is nothing fair or right about a person with a gun shooting the harmless and beautiful creatures. The gunners like to describe what they do as character-building, but we know that to wound an animal and watch it go through theagony of dying can make nobody happy. If, as they would have you believe, gun-carrying and killing improve human- character, then perhaps we should encourage war.
25.According to the text, most people do not seem to be against hunting because _____.

B. praise hunting as character-building

D. encourage them to have guns of their own
28. It can be inferred from the text that the author seems to _____.
A.worry about the existence of wildlife
B.blame the majority of people
C.be in favour of war
D.be in support of character-building

say is that it'll be too expensive for him. "Yeah, the full " "$18.65," she submitted. The bills he was
counting weren't going to make it. I wasn't intending to get the whole pizza for him. But thinking
back to my conversation with the business man, l realized that money was really just the wrapping.
I made my move. "Can you charge that pizza with my order" I said to the cashier. "Really T'
the homeless-looking man said. "Really?" the young woman behind the counter repeated. "Yes,
really." That disheveled man and I had a sweet silent moment. To his silent question of why I was
doing it, l added, "Just pay it forward for someone else." And he said, "Well, you know what? I was
actually treating these five homeless guys out there." He was actually paying it forward, in the first

As S.Kamakshi and her friends play kho kho on the playground of the Chennai Higher Secondary School in Thiruvanmiyur, a distant eye is systematically watching them. The CCTV camera(监控摄像机) here has been installed(安装) as part of an experimental project.
According to A.P.Subramanian, assistant headmaster, the public school has four cameras. The cameras have been in place for close to 45 days. Headmistress K.B.Gomathi says that since only two night watchmen guard their large campus, the modern technology helps greatly in terms of security. Four more cameras, she says, will be installed. Its role in keeping discipline(纪律) is only an added advantage.
When asked about how they felt about the cameras, students listed things they could no longer do—they would not be able to drop litter on the playground, they would no longer be able to get into fights. Beyond all that though,N.Shalini and her friends say that if someone fell down and injured his leg while playing on the field, they would be conscious of the fact that their teachers would come to his aid immediately.
Jeyapriya R.,a teacher at the school, however, raises a fundamental question. For how long can students be disciplined by a camera? Discipline, she says, has to come from the inside of an individual's mind.“But when students have a quarrel, and parents come asking,we have the evidence to show them,”she adds.
Unlike public schools, private schools in the city have been using CCTV cameras for a few years now. A jeeth Prasath Jain, headteacher of Bhavan's Rajaji Vidyashram, says that his school's 80 cameras were installed five years ago and have been helpful in keeping a watch on the children.“We abstain_from installing cameras in classrooms because we do not want to rob the student and the teacher of their freedom. They have been installed only in the movement areas and the labs,”he says.
Educationist S.S.Rajagopalan, however, says, “This system is based on the mistaken assumption that children will behave only when watched,” he says. Children,he adds, are very likely to misbehave in a controlled atmosphere, and must be given the freedom to be children.
28.The Chennai Higher Secondary School will install more CCTV cameras mainly to ________.
A.keep the students' discipline B.improve the safety of the campus
C.use more advanced technology D.avoid complaints from parents
29.N.Shalini will probably agree that CCTV cameras ______.
A.can help children in danger B.will limit students' freedom
C.prove to be almost useless D.raise her fear of crime

A.avoid B.suggest C.admit D.consider
31.Who takes a negative attitude to CCTV cameras in school?
A.A.P.Subramanian. B Jeyapriya R.

Time talks. It speaks more plainly than words. Time 1 in many ways.
Consider the different parts of the day, for example. The time of the day when something is done can give a 2 meaning to the event. It is not a 3 to telephone someone very early in the morning. If you telephone him early in the day, 4 he is probably shaving or having breakfast, the time of the call shows that something is urgent and 5 immediate attention.
The same meaning is 6 telephone calls made after 11:00 pm. If someone receives a call during sleeping hours, he may think it is a 7 of life or death. The time chosen for the call 8 its importance.
In social life, time plays a very 9 part. In the United States, guests tend to feel they are not highly regarded if the 10 to a dinner party is extended only three or four days before the party date. But this is not 11 in all countries. In other areas of the world, it may be considered foolish to make an appointment too far 12 because plans which are made for a date more than a week away tend to be 13 .
The meaning of time 14 from place to place in the world. 15 , misunderstandings often arise between people from different cultures that 16 time differently. For example, promptness (及时) is 17 greatly in American life. If people are not prompt, they may be regarded as 18 or not fully responsible. In the US, no one would think of keeping a business associate 19 for an hour; it would be too rude. A person who is five minutes late is 20 to make a short apology.

Alexis, 17, sat quietly in the passenger seat of her dad's car. She let her eyes lazily scan the landscape for wildlife. Then a deer came into view about 200 yards in front of them. "Dad, there's a deer there!" Alexis said. It was a male deer with sharp antlers (角) on each side of its head.
As the car moved closer, Alexissaw that the deer's head was bent toward the ground. Then she heard a scream and saw an arm fly up near the deer's head. She went to pick up a stick for self-defense, and the deer charged. It lifted her with its antlers and threw her into the air. Sue could feel blood flew down her leg.Within seconds, the deer had pushed her off the road.
When Alexis and her father pulled up, the deer was throwing Sue like a doll. "I was kicking it to get its attention," she says. Then her father, who had followed his daughter, pushed the deer away from the women.

"I was losing faith," she says. "A couple more strikes, Alexis," said her father. "You can do it."
Turning the hammer around, Alexis closed her eyes and beat the deer's neck with all her strength. When she opened her eyes, the deer was running away.

I placed some money in the woman’s cup and 54 my tour, light-hearted after witnessing such a 55 act of caring.

Over the weekend , a single image of a boy reading to an orange cat was uploaded to Reddit, an entertainment, social networking and news web
site, and has since become widespread.
In August 2013, the Animal Rescue League of Berks County, Pennsylvania , US, began running a unique program called “Book Buddies,” where children in grades 1-8 volunteer to read books to sheltered cats. The idea was inspired by a 10-year-old named Sean, the son of Kristi Rodriguez, who organizes the way people work together in the shelter.
“The program will help children improve their reading skills while also helping the shelter animals. Cats find the rhythmic sound of a voice very comforting and soothing.” the shelter explained.
Once a child finishes reading five books, they are rewarded with prizes, such as snacks. Not to mention, they are given the opportunity to develop their reading skills while also doing their part to care for the animals.
If you happen to talk to people who have never owned a cat or don’t like cats, they will probably tell you that cats don’t show affection, or they are proud, cool and remote in character. But that is not true. The cats in Berks County, despite not having permanent homes, can `be seen showing lots of loving affection towards the children.
You can donate money to the shelter through its website, or visit it on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and other social networking websites.
