Last week we held a discussion on which we should do for our school before we graduate. The students in our class have different suggestion. Some students thought that we can collect money to buy some books for the school library or everything else for the school. Others students think that it’s not necessary to spend money in this, we can study hard and make our school feeling proud of us.

In my opinion, we don’t have to spend money. We can do something meaningfully without money. For example,we can do some voluntary work to beautify the school and try to get better results in the coming exams so that our school will proud of us.

Now a roboticist at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. Maja Mataris is leading a team that programs machines called socially assistive robots. Matari wants her team’s robots to help people who have diseases or physical disabilities. For example, a person with Alzheimer’s disease, which causes problems with memory and brain function, might need help with mental exercises. A person trying to regain the use of an arm after a stroke might need encouragement to keep doing helpful exercises. Because there are not enough people to provide all of the help that’s needed, Matari says,“Technology has to step in.”

In one study, Matari’s team tested a robot with people recovering from a stroke. A stroke is caused by a broken blood vessel in the brain or a blood clot that prevents blood from flowing to the brain Small regions of cells die during a stroke. So afterward part of the body, like an arm, may become weak or numb. A patient has to keep exercising that arm to recover. Those exercises can be difficult and unpleasant, however.

Matari and her colleagues programmed a knee-high robot to ask a patient to perform an exercise and to then monitor the patient’s movements. If the person actively used his or her arm, this robot would say encouraging things.

The team tested the robot with six people actually recovering from a stroke. Patients tended to perform their exercise longer and follow instructions better when the robot was present than with no prompting.

Next, the researchers tested whether the robot’s personally affected how people responded to it. The robot could be directed to move in close, speak loudly and make forceful statements, such as“You can do it!”Other times, the researchers would program the robot to act more shyly. At these times, the robot kept a bit of a distance and softly offered gentle suggestions, such as“I know it’s hard, but remember it’s for your own good.”

32.Matari and her team are developing robots that could be used widely              .

A.  in medical fields           B. in learning and teaching

C. in saving people’s lives    D. in helping people out of trouble

33.By saying “Technology has to step in”, Matari probably means     .

A. the robots can take the place of human beings.

B. the robots have to be used to help the disabilities

C. technology has developed rapidly

D technology has entered our daily life

34.According to the team’s study, the knee-high robot    .

A. could keep blood vessel from breaking

B. benefited the person with a stoke a lot

C. set a good example to the serious patients

 D. forced the patients to do some tiring things

35.Why could unhealthy people keep exercising for a longer time than usual?

A. Because they were very strong.

B. Because moving pencils interested them.

C. Because the robot offered its kindness to them.

D. Because the robot’s words encouraged them.

Take local transportation and see the real China. Using local tranportaion like buses, trains and taxis will let you see China and interact with Chinese in the way you have had never experienced before.

Local Transportation in China

Many of us came into China expecting half of the Chinese population to be on bicycles. Nothing can be further from the truth today. Personal cars and taxis seem to be the most common mode of transportation today and in fact, you can hardly see bicycles in the streets in some of the major cities in China! Many young adults in China may not even know how to cycle!

Taxis in China

If you are new to China, start with taxis. Depending on the city you are in, fares start from RMB5(US$0.8) to RMB12(US$1.2) and run on taxi-meter. Taxis will be able to print receipts. Always ask for a receipt at the end of a journey. In case you leave behind something, a receipt will be useful to trace the driver and the taxi.

Public Buses in China

Public buses in cities are the most common and popular form of public transport. Public bus fares in China are extremely cheap and usually cost a flat RMB1 or RMB2(US$0.15 to US$0.25). You pay the same price regardless of the distance you travel.

Metro or Subway in China

Underground trains are not found in most Chinese cities except the biggest ones such as Beijing or Shanghai.

Even then, these subway networks are not well developed as compared to other major cities around the world. In fact, Beijing subway is so disappointing with just two major lines given that it is such a large city.

Ask a Chinese colleague of friend to advise you on what subway line to take.

Railway Trains in China

China has an extensive railway system and train fares are cheap and trains are very punctual. Book your tickets at the hotel reception or at the railway station. Certain tickets may be pre-booked and there are different classes of seats.

22. When you come to China for the first time, which is the most suitable means to take?

A. Public buses     B. Underground trains       C. Railway trains.      D. Taxis

23. What can we infer from the passage?

A. If you leave some of your belongings in a taxi, you won’t get it back.

B. The underground train system is developed perfectly in big cities.

C. Public bus is the most popular form with very low price despite the distance.

D. You can book the train tickets in the classroom without going to the station.

Nowadays, more and more students tend to ______ online courses instead of taking courses at the training center.

A hospital has been forced to ban Pokemon Go players from the site after a monster hub(妖怪枢纽站) was found in the A&E department. Royal Stoke University Hospital discovered that its casualty unit(急诊室) is on the same spot as a Pokemon Go ‘gym’ —— where players can train their newly caught Nintendo creatures.

The University Hospitals of North Midlands Trust agreed last week that patients can play Pokemon Go on wards because walking around is healthy. But the Trust has been forced to post a warning on its website about public access to A&E. It said if Pokemon Go becomes a major annoyance it would ask Nintendo—— which decides on the locations of the virtual gyms according using GPS——to have it removed from the premises(道馆).

Kevin Parker, associate chief nurse, said, “Members of the public who do not need to be at Royal Stoke should not attempt to enter A&E or any other part of the hospital building to play the game. The A&E department is incredibly busy this summer. We want the public to understand that anybody who visits the hospital solely to play the game will provide an unwanted distraction to the important work of the hospital. I’m also aware of various reports in the media of unsafe areas that the game has been played in.”

“Royal Stoke University Hospital is a safe area where gamers can enjoy Pokemon Go.” Michelle Harris, the Trust’s manager, said the game could still be played by those already in hospital. “We recognize that the Pokemon Go game encourages walking and exercise, which is something that the Trust is equally keen to promote,” she said.

There are a number of “walking routes” established throughout the Trust that can be used to combine walking and playing the game. “Walking just 30 minutes, five times a week, can help reduce the risk of preventable illnesses such as obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.”

There have been several warnings about the game since its UK release. Last week a group of teenagers in Wiltshire were left stranded almost 100ft underground after they got carried away searching for Pokemon Go characters. The four boys, aged 16 and 17, ended up getting lost and had to wait to get a phone signal before they could call for help. Eventually, they contacted Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue team, who took them to safety. Damien Bence, of the fire and rescue team, said: “Pokemon Go is obviously leading people into dangerous situations.”

   A. designed to help patients in hospital recover sooner

   B. helping cure such diseases as obesity, diabetes and heart disease

   C. encouraging players to walk and exercise instead of staying indoors

   D. warning teenagers of the places easy to get lost or attacked

   C. players’ injury increases the workload of the A&E department

   D. players’ arrival disturbs the work of the A&E department

29. The underlined word in the last paragraph probably means_______.

   A. hurt         B. disturbed       C. trapped      D. threatened

After finishing my teaching for a school year, I thought that I should go back to Montreal, Quebec, my hometown for a visit. My main goal was to relax in preparation for the challenges of my retirement in the coming year.

Through my stay in Montreal, I met lots of Chinese who are struggling to succeed and then lead a better life in Canada.

Some travelled thousands of miles to get knowledge. When I spoke with some of them about the major barrier they had to face after they arrived in Canada, they all talked about the two official languages of Canada. But I was impressed by their ability to express their ideas while switching between English and French.

Almost all of those people said they often felt homesick. They miss their families and friends. Though Montreal has lots of Chinese restaurants, they long for a home-cooked meal.

I met some tourists who were trying to realize their childhood dreams of experiencing the life in a developed country. When I asked them if Montreal had lived up to their expectations, they hesitated. They said that reality never agrees with fantasies. However, they were glad to have the opportunity to visit Montreal and didn’t regret taking the trip.

Not all the Chinese people I met were happy. I once met a young lady who met with a gentleman through the Internet. However, to her disappointment, he disappeared after he promised to marry her in Montreal.

I was served by another Chinese person who could not handle the challenges of studying in an English environment and ended up working in a restaurant with minimum pay.

Exploring different parts of the world, without any doubt, is an enriching experience. However, one should be realistic when it comes to leaving his hometown to set up a new life in a foreign country. One should take the time to examine the advantages and the shortcomings of the venture before they decide to chase an uncertain dream of achieving success or leading a better life.

I know what you’re thinking: pizzaFor breakfast? But the truth is that you can have last night’s leftovers in the a.m. if you want to.   I know lots of women who skip breakfast (不吃早饭), and they have a ton of different excuses for doing it. Some say they don’t have time, others think they’re “saying” calories still others just don’t like breakfast food .   But the bottom line is that eating in the morning is very important when you’re trying to lose weight . “Eating just about anything from 300 to 400 calories would be better than nothing at all,” says Katherine Brooking, R.Dwho developed the super-easy eating plan for this year’s “SELF CHALLENGE”. And even pizza can be healthy if it’s loaded with vegetables, and you stick to one small piece.   Breakfast is one meal I never miss, and the same goes for most weight loss success stories. Research shows that eating breakfast keeps you from overeating later in the day. Researchers at the University of Southern California found that breakfast skippers have a bigger chance of gaining weight than those who regularly have a morning meal.   So eat something in the morning, anything. I know plenty of friends who end up having no breakfast altogether, and have just coffee or orange juice. I say, try heating up last night’s leftovers – it may sound crazy, but if it works for you, do it! I find if I tell myself, “You can always eat it tomorrow.” I put away the leftovers instead of eating more that night. Try it … you may save yourself some pre-bedtime calories. And watch your body gain the fat-burning effects. 21. The word “leftovers” in paragraph I probably means  ______.   A. food remaining after a meal           B. things left undone   C. meals made of vegetables             D. pizza topped with fruit22. What can we infer from the text?   A. Working women usually have breakfast in a hurry.   B. Many people have wrong ideas about breakfast.   C. There are some easy ways of cooking a meal.   D. Eating vegetables helps save energy. 23. According to the last paragraph, it is important to _______.   A. eat something for breakfast           B. be careful about what you eat   C. heat up food before eating it          D. eat calorie-controlled food24. The text is written mainly for those _______.   A. who go to work early                B. who want to lose weight

   C. who stay up late                    D. who eat before sleep
