If you could have one superpower, what would it be?
Dreaming about whether you would want to read minds, see through walls, or have superhuman strength may sound silly, but it actually gets to the heart of what really matters in your life.
Every day in our work, we are inspired by the people we meet doing extraordinary things to improve the world.
They have a different kind of superpower that all of us possess: the power to make a difference in the lives of others.
We’re not saying that everyone needs to contribute their lives to the poor. Your lives are busy enough doing homework, playing sports, making friends, seeking after your dreams. But we do think that you can live a more powerful life when you devote some of your time and energy to something much larger than yourself. Find an issue you are interested in and learn more. Volunteer or, if you can, contribute a little money to a cause. Whatever you do, don’t be a bystander. Get involved. You may have the opportunity to make your biggest difference when you’re older. But why not start now?
Our own experience working together on health, development, and energy the last twenty years has been one of the most rewarding parts of our lives. It has changed who we are and continues to fuel our optimism about how much the lives of the poorest people will improve in the years ahead.

It’s Thanksgiving, which means a lot of family time. Here are some movies that will be fun for the whole family.
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 – Since the book series is so popular, and so is Jennifer Lawrence, you’re likely to have someone in the family who wants to go to the theaters to finish the games. This one tests the limits of PG-13 in its intensity, though, so be careful of that if you’re taking some little ones.
Rating: PG-13 for intense sequences of violence and action, and for some thematic material
Availability: In theaters everywhereZ-X-X-K]
The Good Dinosaur (恐龙)– Another great choice for adults and kids alike, Pixar’s latest offering goes back millions of years when dinosaurs weren’t destroyed by a small planet that hit Earth. We follow a little dinosaur named Arlo who must learn to face his fears when he gets separated from his family. It’s a touching story for the whole family, so make sure you bring some tissues for the tears that will eventually come out of your face.
Rating: PG for peril (危险), action and thematic elements
Availability: In theaters everywhere
Love the Coopers – Olivia Wilde stars in what is this year’s family Christmas comedy that deals with the trials and sufferings of not being able to choose your relatives. This one doesn’t have a great Rotten Tomatoes score at 21%, but I’ve heard that it’s pretty charming nonetheless thanks to Wilde.
Rating: PG -13 for thematic elements, language and some sexuality
Availability: In theaters everywhere
Inside Out – Pixar’s summer release is a funny, beautiful tale of growing up and dealing with the complicated emotions inside your head. After seeing this one a couple of times, it quickly rose up to be my second favorite Pixar movie of all-time (behind The Incredibles). Honestly, it’s better than The Good Dinosaur. If you don’t feel like heading to the theaters, just pick this one up to watch at home.
Rating: PG for mild thematic elements and some action
Availability: Blu-Ray, DVD and VOD
Note: PG stands for parental guidance, which suggested some material may not be suitable for children.

The person who touched me most is an unknown lady. I study in a city school but lives in a village 15 kilometers away. One afternoon, I receive a call from my family saying my mom was serious ill. I hurried to the bus station, only find the last bus had left. Feel anxious, I decided to walk home. On the way a car stopped and the driver asked me that I needed help. Worried about being cheated, I said anything. But she was such sincere that I finally accepted her offer. When we reached my village, it was dark. Seeing her car out of the sight. I was in tear. Whenever I think of her, I always feel grateful.
Being seen in a fancy sports car or enjoying a beach holiday in a five-star hotel were once signs of having ‘‘made it”.
But a new study suggested that having people think of you as constantly busy and overworked is now a far better way to show social status.
According to Harvard University in the US, people are increasingly leaning toward the phenomenon of “humblebragging (谦虚自夸)”. This is when people make a seemingly modest statement that actually draws attention to something they want to brag (吹嘘) about.
Phrases such as “I have no life” and “I desperately need a holiday” are now used to imply social standing, while ordering food and shopping online is the perfect way to prove to neighbors that you are simply too busy and important to go to the supermarket.
“Movies, magazines, and popular TV shows often highlight (强调) the abundance (富足) of money and leisure time among the wealthy,” said Neeru Paharia, an assistant professor at Harvard University.
“In recent years, featuring wealthy people relaxing by the pool or on a yacht (游艇), playing tennis or skiing and hunting are being replaced with advertisements featuring busy individuals who work long hours and have very limited leisure time,” he said. “Displaying (how busy you are at work) and a lack of leisure time operates as a visible signal of status in the eyes of others.”
The researchers pointed out that the Wall Street Journal’s 2016 advert campaign featured celebrities (名人) complaining about their busy lives, with the slogan (标语). “People who don’t have time, make time to read the Wall Street Journal.”
The report, which was published in the Journal of Consumer Research, also found that brands that marketed themselves as timesaving were becoming increasingly high-status, because of the people who used them.
According to the authors, this trend of humblebragging is due to people’s shit of focus-they now value “the preciousness und scarcity (稀缺) of individuals" more than “the preciousness and scarcity of goods”.
“Busy individuals possess desirable characteristics, leading them to be viewed as scarce and in demand,” the authors concluded.

As Clay anxiously 10 how he played a part in her suicide, he noticed how a number of little, seemingly unimportant 11 can add up to a terrible high school existence for someone else.
It 12 us all that sometimes when something is said or done to 13 another intentionally, it can have 14 effects and can even lead to other major events in that person’s life.

Have you ever thought about going abroad to volunteer? Making a difference in a country less fortunate than your own is seen by most as a really positive thing to do. However, not everyone is in favour of this so-called “voluntourism”.
Volunteer tourism is a growing fashion. In 2015, it was estimated that 10 million volunteers helped on project abroad. These included worksbuilding houses or hospitals, teaching English in schools, teaching locals to use computers, installing water filters, looking after chidren in orphanages, and much more.
However, there’s an argument that volunteers take away jobs from locals who would have otherwise done that work. Yes, sometimes volunteers have specific knowledge which can benefit communities such as IT skills or speaking English as a native language. However, in some cases they are put to work on construction sites, for example, depriving locals of a job on that project. Additionally, many young travelers are untrained for the role. This could become a health and safety problem on construction sites or when caring for children.
I volunteered myself last year in a library and a school in Ghana. I helped to reshelve books, talked to the librarian about the running of the library and played games with children. This was an enriching experience for myself, and the librarian and teachers really valued help and ideas on what they could improve, often based on my experience of European libraries and schools. However, I’m not a qualified teacher or librarian, and I felt like the locals were far too trusting of my opinion and decisions, just because I come from a more developed country.
Finally, volunteering abroad also helps you develop as a person, and is a shining addition to a CV. I think volunteer projects are usually very valuable for communities, but often benefit the participant just as much, if not more than those they are helping.

C. Volunteers working abroad have decreased in 2015.
D. Volunteers working abroad have no safety problems.
30. What can the locals’ attitude to the author in Ghana?
A. Indifferent. B. Doubtful. C. Sympathetic. D. Trustful.
31. What does the author conclude in the last paragraph?
A. Volunteers benefit a lot from volunteering abroad.
B. Volunteering abroad offers participants good jobs.
C. Volunteering contributes a lot to poor countries.
D. The quality of volunteering needs improving.
Ronald Reagan’s son, Ron Reagan, wrote a memoir(回忆录),My Father at 100, as the 100th anniversary of the late president’s birth approached.
The younger Reagan wrote that for most of his childhood he was an only child. His older sister Patti was off at boarding school, leaving him and his mother, Nancy, alone with the man who was to become one of the most popular politicians of all time.
So, what insight would his son give us about the man many still find a mystery? He admitted early on that he was haunted(缠绕)by the inevitable question: “What are you going to tell me about him that I don’t already know?”
The younger Reagan covered a lot of familiar aspects. He admitted, for instance, the well-known fact that his father could be distant and inattentive. “He was often wandering somewhere in his own head,” he wrote.“...A paradoxical(自相矛盾的)character, my father: He was warm yet remote.”
Reagan made it clear that his memoir was not political. He said it was only his attempt to understand the father with whom he grew up, a public figure and, most importantly, a human being in all his stubborn mystery.
While this book is certainly not the end-all of who Ronald Reagan was, it adds many personal pieces to the Reagan puzzle.
The son decided to go back to the beginning, from ancestral Ireland to his father’s childhood in small Midwestern towns, where he discovered that the energetic and optimistic young lifeguard was much the same person who was to become his father, and then president.
He cleverly jumped back and forth from his father’s life to his own, but one hungers for more stories about the young Reagan family of California, for more first-person accounts from the son who was there, like the story of his father never letting young Ron win a race in the pool.
32.In Ron Reagan’s eyes, his father was________.
A.kind but distant B. cold and impatient
C. energetic but pessimistic D. hardworking and devoted
33.What can we say about the book My Father at 100?
A.It doesn’t relate to familiar stories of Ronald Reagan. B. It was written out of political reasons.

D. It covers Ronald Reagan’s childhood.
34.Which of the following is true of Ron Reagan?
A.He is Ronald Reagan’s only child.
B.He thought his father was a mystery.
C.He once competed with his father in the pool.
D.He didn’t live with his father when he was little.
35.What would be the best title for the text?
A. A great president.
B. A closer look at Ronald Reagan.
C. Ronald Reagan and his son.
D. How My Father at 100 was written.
Last weekend I visited Rome for the first time. I spent three busy days in the Italian capital, seeing lots of tourist attractions and walking down streets lit with Christmas decorations. There are a lot of things I love about the city.
Rome is one of the most ancient cities in the world and is full of wonderful relics(遗迹)from its distant past. These monuments include the Roman Forum and the vast Coliseum where g
ladiators used to fight each other until death and hunt animals coming from another country. The ruins of buildings and temples are fascinating: you can't quite believe how old they are.
I studied the masterpieces of the Renaissance period at university and was very excited to see them in real life. I walked around the museum in Vatican City and saw plenty of famous sculptures(雕塑). The best part of the visit was, without doubt, the Sistine Chapel ceiling, painted in the early 16th century by the great Michelangelo. It was so breathtaking that I couldn’t tear my eyes away from it.
In Rome, there is a lot of food on offer for tourists but some of it isn’t very good quality. I made an effort to find authentic restaurants to taste the popular meals of the region, like pasta with tomato, onion and bacon. I also loved eating ice cream and hot chocolate under the Christmas lights.
Rome has not only lots of luxury boutiques(精品店)but also plenty of shops that were more in my price range! It was a perfect opportunity to go and buy presents for my family and friends. There was also a Christmas market, where I bought a sparkly decoration for the tree.
24. The underlined word “gladiators” in the 2nd paragraph probably means “_____”.
A. athletes B. butchers
C. invaders D. fighters
25. The author found the ruins of buildings and temples fascinating because _____.
A. they represent Rome's religion
B. they are relics from Rome's distant past
C. you can't help wondering how old they are
D. they include the Roman Forum and the vast Coliseum
26. What is mainly discussed in the 3rd paragraph?
A. The great museums of Italy.
B. The sculptures in Rome.
C. Art-related activities during the visit.
D. The achievements of the Renaissance period in Italy.
27. When visiting Rome, you should be careful in choosing ______.

Lakshmi grew up in India in the first half of the twentieth century, seeing many people around her who did not get enough food, were often sick and died young.
In the 1960s, she was asked to help manage a program to improve nutrition in her country. At that time, most advice on nutrition came from North American and European countries. Nutritionists suggested foods that were common and worked well for people who lived in these nations.
For example, they told poor Indian women to eat more meat and eggs and drink more orange juice. But Lakshmi knew this advice was useless in a country such as India. People there didn't eat such foods. They weren't easy to find. And for the poor, such foods were too expensive.
Lakshmi knew that for the program to work, it had to fit Indian culture. So she decided to adjust the nutrition program. She first found out what healthy middle class people in India ate. She took note of the nutrients (营养物)available in those foods. Then she looked for cheap, easy-to-find foods that would provide the same nutrients.
She created a balanced diet of locally grown fruits, vegetables, and grains. These foods were cheap and could be cooked with simple equipment. Her ideas were thought unusual in the 1960s. For example, she insisted that a diet without meat could provide all major nutrients. Now we know she was right. But it took her continuous efforts to get others to finally accept her diet about 50 years ago. Because of Lakshmi's program, Indian children almost doubled their food intake. And many children who would have been hungry and ill grew healthy and strong.
