Professor Anne Bamfordof the University of the ArtsLondon

studied the effectiveness of 3D content in 15 schools across seven countriesincluding the UKPupils in 3D classes can remember more than those in the 2D classes after four weeksimproving test scores by an average of 1 7 percent compared with eight percent for 2D lessonsThey gave more detailed answer to the tasks and were more likely to think in 3D, using hand gestures and mime(模仿动作) to answer the test questions successfully

The teachers commented that the pupils in the 3D groups had deeper understandingincreased attention span, more motivation and higher engagement in the lessons

Children are used to 3D with the rise of computer games that use the technology—90 percent of those in the study had seen a 3D filmSchools would need 3D—enabled projectors(投影仪)laptops with good picture capabilities3D software and glasses for children to introduce animations(动作) into classrooms

But Danny Nicholsonan educationistsaid the technology would be impractical to use in

schools and could be costlyHe said“While I think the idea of 3D technology is very interesting

Cis more practical than 2D models  Dmay not be affordable for schools

6What can we learn from the last paragraph?

A3D technology will replace 2D models in the future

BMany pupils are now more Interested In science than before

CTeachers will use the 3D technology through specific training

D3D will soon be put into use in one school district in Colorado

Flying devices called drones(无人机) may be one of the most important technologies of the future.

The number of jobs for people who know how to design, build and control them is increasing. Because of this increase, several U.S. universities have started offering degrees in unmanned aircraft systems, or UAS.

One of these universities is the University of Washington in Seattle. Ward Handley is seeking a master’s degree in UAS at the university. When the drone program first began, he did not think it was a good idea. “Drones can be used to invade privacy(侵犯隐私).” He said. But later, Handley changed his opinion. He said, “I think there are good enough purposes for them.”

The FAA (the part of the U.S. government that controls air travel and traffic) is creating new rules to control the use of drones, however. A new law requires drone owners to register(登记) their drones. People who do not register their drones could face fines of up to US$20,000.

The new rules may also present problems for students. One problem is finding a legal place to fly.

Students at Blue Mountain Community College fly inside the college gym. In Seattle, University of Washington students test their drones in a big room.

Christopher Lum, a scientist at the University of Washington, helps students explore how drones can safely share the sky with regular aircraft. Lum explained why they test drones inside a building, “We need to register our aircraft and get permission to fly outside. That process can take months.”

At this time, Kansas State University is the only school with permission to offer unmanned aircraft flight classes to students outside. The FAA selected Kansas State University and 15 other universities to be part of a national research group.

Lum and some of his students recently moved their research to Australia. Australia has fewer rules limiting drones. A professor at Western Washington University also took his department’s drones to Canada for the same reason.

12. Degrees in UAS were created in several U.S. universities because of             .

A. the increasing interest in the field

B. the increasing employment opportunities

C. the support from the government

D. the development of this technology

13. Why didn’t Handley think the drone program was a good idea at first?

A. Drones can be used for bad purposes.

B. The use of drones was very limited.

C. Few people can benefit from the program.

D. The university didn’t attach great importance to the program.

14. According to Lum, why does he teach flight classes inside a building?

A. It’s safer for the students.

B. It’s very expensive to register the aircraft.

C. It takes a very long time to get official permission.

D. He hasn’t got permission from the university.

15. What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?

A. Australia is promoting the use of drones.

B. Kansas State University is the first to offer a UAS degree.

C. Australia has fewer rules than Canada to control the use of drones.

D. The U.S. has more rules than Canada to control the use of drones.

In this constantly changing world, how to put the knowledge   61   (gain) every day into   62 _ (real) has interested numerous people. As a proverb goes, “Knowledge is a treasure, but practice is the key   63   it.” Apparently, this saying tries to deliver the message   64   we ought not   65   (stop) practicing it if we   66 (true) want to master the knowledge we learn.

There are several reasons   67   (account) for this statement. To begin with, human beings are forgetful beings; therefore, only when we use knowledge, make   68 (mistake), and try to use it again will we be able to remember it by our heart. Moreover, knowledge has become growingly complicated and we can seldom grasp the essence of it if we do not practice it again and again.

Practicing, to sum up,   69   (be) of the greatest importance for those who are determined to learn knowledge well. As a student, I hope that the young can focus more attention on practicing   70   they learn.

Dear Friend,

The recent success of children’s books has made the general public aware that there’s a huge market out there. And there’s a growing need for new writers trained to create the $3 billion worth of children’s books bought each year … plus stories and articles needed by over 650 publishers of magazines for children and teenagers.

Who are these needed writers? They’re ordinary folks like you and me.

But am I good enough?

I was once where you might be now. My thoughts of writing had been pushed down by self-doubt, and I didn’t know where to turn for help .

Then, I accepted a free offer from the Institute to test my writing ability , and it turned out to be the inspiration I needed.

The promise that paid off

The Institute made the same promise to me that they will make to you, if you show basic writing ability:

You will complete at least one manuscript手稿suitable to hand in to a publisher by the time you finish our course.

I really didn’t expect any publication before I finished the course, but that happened. I sold three stories. And I soon discovered that was not unusual at the Institute.

Since graduation, I have authored 34 nationally published children’s books and over 300 stories and articles.

Free test and brochure

We offer a free ability test and will send you a copy of our brochure小册子describing our recognized home-study courses on the basis of one-on-one training .

Realize your writing dream today. There’s nothing sadder than a dream delayed until it fades forever.

Sincerely ,

Kristi Hill , Instructor

Institute of Children’s Literature

Turning a negative experience into something more positive isn’t always easy. In fact, some of the most tragic moments in our life seem never-ending when we are experiencing them. However, there is always a way to take a bad situation and extract something positive from it. Below are five ways to do just that.

36. ________. That is what you should initially tell yourself when something bad happens. Repeat those words in your head and even aloud if it helps. The important thing is that you do not panic, as this will only exasperate the negative experience. Every bad moment in your life will end, which can be a comfort during the worst of times.

37. _________. Some people believe that everything happens for a reason. While you may not buy into that philosophy, you can at least give each experience a purpose. Try to think of a lesson that the experience has taught you. Did you meet a new friend while going through this time? Did you learn how not to do something?

38. __________. This applies to everything in your life. Almost every situation allows for a bit of levity, so remain humble and try seeing the humorous side of things. Even if it isnt appropriate to joke about something aloud, you can make humorous observations in your mind to keep you on a positive track.

39. ___________. You will not help anyone by stewing in a moment that has already passed. Whether you were hurt, embarrassed or both, the negative emotions you felt before should not remain fresh in your psyche. If you continue to dwell in the negative, you will never find your way out again.

40. ____________. As I said before, you should never dwell in your past negative experiences. Sometimes it is hard to get out of a funk, however. The best way to rise

up from a bad experience and move on from a situation is to set new, positive goals to focus on. This will give you something good to strive for and will take your mind off whatever has occurred.

A. Find purpose in the experience.

B. This too shall pass.

C. Set a new goal to work towards.

D. Don’t dwell on negative moments.

E. Learn new ways to do it.

F. Keep your sense of humor handy.

G. Make new friends.

My class and I visited Chris Care Center in Phoenix, Arizona to comfort the old people who needed a little cheering up during the holiday season.

The first two   41   there were for persons requiring help in taking care of themselves. We sang   42   for them. They loved our sweet songs and the flowers that we left with them.

As we were   43   on the third floor for old people with Alzheimer (老年痴呆症), most of them   44   off at the walls or floor. However, one lady   45   my eyes. She was sitting by the door, in a wheelchair, singing songs to herself. They weren’t the songs that we were singing, at least they didn’t   46   like that. As we got   47   with each festive song, she did as well. The louder we got, the louder she got.   48   she was singing, she was also   49   out to us with her hands and body. I knew that I should have gone over to her, but I thought that my   50   were to my students. People who worked at the care center could   51   to her, I thought. Just when I stopped feeling   52   about not giving her the attention she needed, one of my students, Justin, showed me what the holiday season is really about.

Justin also   53   the same lady. The difference between us is that he   54   on her needs, but I didn’t. During the last song, “Silent Night,” Justin walked over to her and held her hand. He looked this aged lady in her   55   and with his actions said, “You are important, and I will take my   56   to let you know that.”

This tired, elderly lady stopped singing and held his hand. Then she touched his cheek with the other hand. Tears began to fall down her face. No   57   can completely describe that touching moment. . .

It   58   a boy to teach me, a man, about kindness and love. Justin’s example of a complete, selfless attitude toward another was a   59   that I will never forget. He was the teacher that day, and I consider myself   60   to have witnessed his lesson.

Nature's cheats

Mary is digging in the ground for a potatowhen along comes JohnSeeing that there is no one in sight, John starts to screamJohn's angry mother rushes over and drives Mary awayOnce his mum has goneJohn helps himself to Mary's potato

We've all experienced similar annoying tricks when we were young-the brother who stole your ball and then got you into trouble by telling your parents you had hit himBut Mary and John are not humansThey're African baboons(狒狒).  16

John's scream and his mother's attack on Mary could have been a matter of chance, but John was later seen playing the same tricks on others  17

Studying behavior like this is complicated, but scientists discovered apes(猿)clearly showed that they intended to cheat and knew when they themselves had been cheated  18   An ape was annoying him, so he tricked her into going away by pretending he had seen something interestingWhen she found nothing, she "walked back, hit me over the head with her hand and ignored me for the rest of the day"

Another way to decide whether an animal's behavior is deliberate is to look for actions that are not normal for that animalA zoo worker describes how an ape dealt with an enemy"He slowly stole up behind the other ape, walking on tiptoeWhen he got close to his enemy, he pushed him violently in the back, then ran indoors" Wild apes do not normally walk on tiptoe  19   But looking at the many cases of deliberate trickery in apes, it is impossible to explain them all as simple copying

It seems that trickery does play an important part in ape societies  20   Studying the intelligence of our closest relative could be the way to understand the development of human intelligence

AIn most cases the animal probably doesn't know it is cheating

BAn amusing example of this comes from a psychologist working in Tanzania

CAnd playing tricks is as much a part of monkey behavior as it is of human behavior

DSo the psychologists asked his colleagues if they had noticed this kind of trickery

E The ability of animals to cheat may be a better measure of their intelligence than their use

of tools

FThis use of a third individual to achieve a goal is only one of the many tricks commonly

   used by baboons

GOf course it's possible that it could have learnt from humans that such behavior works, without understanding why

Booking a trip on an online travel site is convenient, but comes with its own set of problems.

They know who's going to spend more.

Last year, US travel research company Orbitz tracked people's online activities to test out whether Mac users spend more on travel than PC users. It turns out that on average, Mac users lay out US $20-30 more per night on hotels. As a result, online travel sites show these users more expensive travel options first. To avoid paying more, sort results by price.

Their software doesn't always link to the hotel's system.

A guaranteed reservation is almost impossible to come by anywhere — but the risk of your flight or hotel being overbooked increases with third-party providers. The middleman's software isn't immune(防护作用的) to system errors, so always call the hotel or airline to make sure your booking was processed.

Don't be fooled by packages: Often, they're low-end items grouped together.

Ever notice how travel sites recommend a hotel, a rental car, and tour package all in one click? These deals usually feature travel that no one wants, like flights with multiple layovers(中途停留). Check the fine print.

Once your trip is purchased, you're on your own.

An online travel agency can't provide assistance the same way an agent can if a flight is cancelled or a room is substandard. Basically, when you arrive at the airport or hotel, you're just another customer who booked at the lowest rate.

33. What does the writer mainly intend to tell readers?

A. Steps of reserving a hotel on line

B. Tips of how to reserve flights on line

C. Problems about reserving a trip on line

D. Traps in reserving hotels and flights on line

34. Why do people probably spend more on their online reservation for trips?

   A. They are shown less expensive travel options first

   B. Some of the travel expenses are earned by Mac users

   C. They book at prices recommended first by travel sites.

   D. Their flights or hotels are overbooked by tourist agencies

35. What can we lean from the passage?

   A. Booking online is better than booking in other ways

   B. The third parties will provide good travel services on line

   C. Few people book trips on line because of possible troubles

   D. Travelers’ interests may not be guaranteed with booking on line.

It is a very common thing for a person to have a good friend. My good friend is Diana. She is a rich and proud girl. She often thinks that she is too good to anyone, so nobody wants to be her friend.

One day after school, I was waiting for Diana when Vivien came up to me. She gave me a biscuit and I accepted it. We talked and joked, and from then on, I began to spend more time with Vivien than with Diana. I felt a little uneasy.

After a few days, I went to see Diana with some snacks when Vivien came and sat with me. She offered me a sandwich. She also offered one to Diana, but Diana refused it. She walked away. I was angry with Diana for being so rude. “Never mind.” Vivien said, “I am used to it.”

After school, I tried to catch up with Diana. While walking home, I tried to correct her attitude, but she didn’t listen to me. She said, “Go and join your “dear” Vivien. I know you make a new friend and forget the old one.”

For the next few weeks, we didn’t talk to each other. Then, one day, Diana came to Vivien and me, saying, “ I am really sorry about what I did. I am a spoiled girl but I also need good friends just like you. Would you please forgive me?” Vivien and I looked at each other and smiled. From then on, Diana, Vivien and I have been best friends.

It's time to be water efficient!

As populations increase across Australia and the rest of the world, demand for water will also increase. If we don’t reduce each individual’s demand for water (both directly and through embodied water) the water situation will become dire.

It is obvious that we cannot increase demands for water much more without detrimental(有害的) effects to the environment, society and the economy.

It’s all too easy to blame someone else for the water situation –“if 70% of water is used for agriculture then that’s what we should target” – but it’s not that easy. We all depend on the food and resources that agriculture provides, and while there are definitely opportunities to increase water efficiency on the farm, the solution will take more than that.

We each share responsibility for the sustainable management of our water resources, which means using less water at home, in the workplace, at school, on holidays, on the farm, … everyone, everywhere, every time.

It's time to become water efficient! This involves reassessing our relationship with water, and learning to use it more sparingly. On the most basic level, it requires a behavioural(行动的) change, and assigning a value to water that truly reflects its worth.

                                                            Yours,

                                                            Li Hua

Sleeping in is one of the best parts of the weekend. After a long, exhausting work week, sometimes all you want to do is sleep. On Friday night, you slide under the covers, smiling in anticipation. Now you can finally catch up on your sleep.

Except you can’t. When you open your eyes Saturday morning, it’s still early. If this were a weekday, you’d be up before your alarm. So what’s the deal?

We hate to break it to you, but you’ve pretty much done this to yourself. Your body is very good at recognizing patterns and adjusting accordingly. If you’ve got a 9-to-5 job, you’re getting up early five days a week. This effectively sets your body clock to wake you at a certain time each day. You can shut off your alarm clock, but your body clock will just keep ticking.

There’s another reason that you probably don’t want to think about: You’re just not as young as you used to be. We need less sleep as we get older. Babies need between 16 and 20 hours. Teenagers should (but often don’t) get nine hours a night. Younger and middle-aged adults need eight. In general, the older you get, the harder it is to snooze the day away.

Even if you do manage to sleep in, you may never fully catch up on your sleep. If your body needs eight hours every night and you only get six or seven from Monday to Friday, you’d have to sleep an extra five to ten hours on Saturday to make it up. And experts say even that may not be enough.

The bottom line: Sleep when you can, and enjoy those extra weekend morning hours. Who doesn’t want a longer weekend?

29. What does the underlined sentence mean in Paragraph 1?

   B. You needn’t get up early on Saturday morning, so you will have a better sleep.

   C. Since you don’t work on Saturday, you needn’t go to sleep as usual.

   D. You know that even though you needn’t get up early on Saturday morning, you will wake as usual.

30. What can we learn from Paragraph 3?

   A. If you have a 9-to-5 job, you are likely to develop a flexible body clock.

   B. Once you have set your body clock, it is not easy to change it.

   C. The author will not break the pattern, but you will do it yourself.

   D. If you adjust your body clock accordingly, you are healthy.

31. Which of the following is the reason why you can’t sleep in on weekends?

   A. You are not willing to admit that you are old.

   B. You need to relax on the weekend.

   C. Your body clock still works on weekends.

   D. You can never get enough sleep.

32. Which is the best title of the passage?
