The arts, especially music, should be part of every school's lessons at every grade level. Students would be much smarter if they had some musical experience. They could improve their classroom skills, like paying attention and following directions. People develop all these skills when they learn music. Making music also lets children use their imagination. It provides students with a chance to try out their own ideas.

Music not only makes children better students, but also gives them something positive to do. In a music program, children can be part of a band instead of joining a gang (团伙). Parents can enjoy listening to their children's music instead of seeing them glued to a computer or TV screen. In a school band, students get to be part of a team. They can get along well with old friends and make new friends through music.

Music builds self-confidence, too. It gives children a sense of achievement and success. Making music is something for them to be proud of, and it lets kids practice performing in front of an audience. Music gives children an opportunity for self-expression, and that helps develop their self-confidence.

Once again, music is important because it can make children better students, give them something positive to do, and build their character. That is why music should be offered in every single grade in every school.

For hundreds of millions of years, turtles (海龟) have struggled out of the sea to lay their eggs on sandy beaches, long before there were nature documentaries to celebrate them, or GPS satellites and marine biologists to track them, or volunteers to hand-carry the hatchlings (幼龟) down to the water’s edge lest (for fear that) they become disoriented by headlights and crawl towards a motel parking lot instead. A formidable wall of bureaucracy has been erected to protect their prime nesting on the Atlantic coastlines. With all that attention paid to them, you’d think these creatures would at least have the gratitude not to go extinct (die out).

But Nature is indifferent to human notions of fairness, and a report by the Fish and Wildlife Service showed a worrisome drop in the populations of several species of North Atlantic turtles, notably loggerheads, which can grow to as much as 400 pounds. The South Florida nesting population, the largest, has declined by 50% in the last decade, according to Elizabeth Griffin, a marine biologist with the environmental group Oceana. The figures prompted Oceana to petition the government to upgrade the level of protection for the North Atlantic loggerheads from “threatened” to “endangered”—meaning they are in danger of disappearing without additional help.

Which raises the obvious question: what else do these turtles want from us, anyway? It turns out, according to Griffin, that while we have done a good job of protecting the turtles for the weeks they spend on land (as egg-laying females, as eggs and as hatchlings), we have neglected the years spend in the ocean. “The threat is from commercial fishing,” says Griffin. Trawlers (which drag large nets through the water and along the ocean floor) and longline fishers (which can deploy thousands of hooks on lines that can stretch for miles) take a heavy toll on turtles.

Of course, like every other environmental issue today, this is playing out against the background of global warming and human interference with natural ecosystems. The narrow strips of beach on which the turtles lay their eggs are being squeezed on one side by development and on the other by the threat of rising sea levels as the oceans warm. Ultimately we must get a handle on those issues as well, or a creature that outlived the dinosaurs (恐龙) will meet its end at the hands of humans, leaving our descendants to wonder how creature so ugly could have won so much affection.

27. We can learn from the first paragraph that ________.

Ahuman activities have changed the way turtles survive

Befforts have been made to protect turtles from dying out

Cgovernment bureaucracy has contributed to turtles’ extinction

Dmarine biologists are looking for the secret of turtles’ reproduction

28.What does the author mean by “Nature is indifferent to human notions of fairness” (Line 1, Para. 2)?

ANature is quite fair regarding the survival of turtles.

BTurtles are by nature indifferent to human activities.

CThe course of nature will not be changed by human interference.

DThe turtle population has decreased in spite of human protection.

29. What constitutes a major threat to the survival of turtles according to Elizabeth Griffin?

ATheir inadequate food supply.          BUnregulated commercial fishing.

CTheir lower reproductively ability.       DContamination(pollution) of sea water

30. How does global warming affect the survival of turtles?

AIt threatens the sandy beaches on which they lay eggs.

BThe changing climate makes it difficult for their eggs to hatch.

CThe rising sea levels make it harder for their hatchlings to grow.

DIt takes them longer to adapt to the high beach temperature.

Leonardo da Vinci's mother may have been a Chinese slave according to a new research by an Italian historian and novelist-Angelo Paratico, who has spent the last 20 years living and working in Hong Kongresearching the links between his homeland and China over the past half century.

Mr. Paratico said the documents he has uncovered during two years of research form the basis of his latest book Leonardo Da Vinci, a Chinese scholar lost in Renaissance (文艺复兴) Italy. The book, which is due to be published next year, uncovers evidence that there's a link between Da Vinci and the Far Fast.

Speaking to the South China Morning http://w|ww?.wln%100.com 未来脑教学云平台@Post, Mr. Paratico said, “I am sure that Leonardo's mother was from the East, but to make her a Chinese, we need to use a deductive method (演绎法).

One wealthy client of Leonardo's father had a slave called Caterina. After Leonardo's date of birth, she disappeared from the documents. She was no longer working there.”

It is believed that his mother was called Caterina, who, according to some reports, was a local peasant. But Mr. Paratico's new work claims it is most likely that Da Vinci's mother was a slave.

Supporting his theory, he said, "During the Renaissance, countries like Italy and Spain were full of slaves from the East.”

He claimed that there were certain aspects of Da Vinci's life and works which suggest a Chinese link. For instance, he was writing with his left hand from left to right and he was also a vegetarian, which was not common. Mona Lisa is probably a portrait of his mother, as Sigmund Freud said in 1910. On the back of Mona Lisa, there is a Chinese landscape and even her face looks Chinese.

Mr. Paratico said he believes the only way to solve the mystery is to dig out some of Da Vinci's relations in Florence and extract some DNA.

1Mr. Paratico has stayed in Hong Kong for 20 years to_________.

A.study Da Vinci's mother

B.explore the connection of Italy and China

C.find Da Vinci's mother is a slave

D.research China and Mona Lisa

2What is Mr. Paratico's latest book based on

A.His work in Hong Kong.

B.His living experience.

C.His final visit to Italy.

D.His research findings.

3Which aspect may suggest there is a link between Da Vinci and Chinese

A.His eating habit.

B.His ways of drawing.

C.His mother's portrait.

D.His father's friend.

4We can infer from the passage that Da Vinci's mother_________.

A.was a slave of Leonardo's father

B.quit working after her marriage

C.may be the model of Mona Lisa

D.was buried in Florence after death

Every man wants his son to be somewhat of a clone, not in features but in footsteps. As he grows you also age, and your ambitions become more unachievable. You begin to realize that your boy, in your footsteps, could probably accomplish what you hoped for. But footsteps can be muddied and they can go off in different directions.

My son Jody has hated school since day one in kindergarten. Science projects waited until the last moment. Book reports weren’t written until the final threat.

I’ve been a newspaperman all my adult life. My daughter is a university graduate working toward her master’s degree in English. But Jody? When he entered the tenth grade he became a “vo-tech” student(技校学生). They’re called “motorheads” by the rest of the student body.

When a secretary in my office first called him “motorhead”, I was shocked. “Hey, he’s a good kid,” I wanted to say. “And smart, really.”

I learned later that motorheads are, indeed, different. They usually have dirty hands and wear dirty work clothes. And they don’t often make school honor rolls(光荣榜).

But being the parent of a motorhead is itself an experience in education. We who labor in clean shirts in offices don’t have the abilities that motorheads have. I began to learn this when I had my car crashed. The cost to repair it was estimated at $800. “Hey, I can fix it,” said Jody. I doubted it , but let him go ahead, for I had nothing to lose.

My son ,with other motorheads, fixed the car. They got parts(零件)from a junkyard, and ability from vo-tech classes. The lost was $25 instead of $80.

Since that first repair job, a broken air-conditioner, a non-functioning washer and a non-toasting toaster have been fixed. Neighbors and co-workers trust their car repairs to him.

These kids are happiest when doing repairs. They joke and laugh and are living in their own relaxed world. And their minds are bright despite their dirty hands and clothes.

I have learned a lot from my motorhead: publishers need printers, engineers need mechanics, and architects need builders. Most important, I have learned that fathers don’t need clones in footsteps or anywhere else.

My son may never make the school honor roll. But he made mine.

28. What used to be the author’s hope for his son?

A. To avoid becoming his clone.             B. To resemble him in appearance.

C. To develop in a different direction.       D. To reach the author’s unachieved goals.

29. What can we learn about the author’s children?

A. His daughter does better in school.         B. His daughter has got a master’s degree.

C. His son tried hard to finish homework.    D. His son couldn’t write his book reports.

30.In the author’s eyes, motorheads are _______.

A. tidy and hardworking         B. cheerful and smart

C. lazy but bright            D. relaxed but rude

31. What did the author realize in the end?

A. It is unwise to expect your child to follow your path.

B. It is important for one to make the honor roll.

C. Architects play a more important role than builders.

D. Motorheads have greater ability than office workers.

Now people all over the world are hoping to realize this dream, ______ are many well-known athletes.

Bethany Meilani Hamilton was born on February 8, 1990 Kauai, Hawaii, where she grew up with two older brothers. Hamilton's parents were both surfers and they started teaching Bethany how to surf at a young age, and she learned quickly with the support of her brothers. By age 8, Bethany was winning first place in surfing contests for her age group. Hamilton began competing more seriously at the age of nine, winning several more competitions in her age group.

On October 31, 2003, while surfing with friends near Tunnels Beach, a 14-foot tiger shark attacked her. Bethany said, "My arm was hanging in the water, and it just came and bit me. It kind of pulled me back and forth. But I just held onto my board and then the shark let go." The shark tore off Bethany's left arm just below her shoulder. Hamilton's friends rushed her to the hospital. Bethany made it through several surgeries without infection (感染), and miraculously survived even though she had lost almost 60% of her blood. The doctor said that her athletic training helped her to survive the attack and blood loss.

While she was healing, Bethany thought for a while that she might not surf again. She was concerned that it would be much harder to stand up on the board using only one hand and that her balance would be completely off. But with hard work and determination she returned to surfing. She says, "It's hard for me to describe the joy I felt after I stood up and rode a wave in for the first time after the attack.  I was greatly thankful and happy inside. The tiny bit of doubt that would sometimes tell me 'you'll never surf again' was gone in one wave !"

As for fear of another shark attack, Bethany says that sometimes her heart pounds when she sees a shadow (阴影) under the water. But she believes that faith provides hope and a future for those who feel down and defeated in their lives.

Bethany's popularity and hope for the future led her to partner with World Vision to create "Surfing for Children in Crisis".  Bethany hopes that her involvement in the campaign will help provide disabled children from around the world with care, support, and hope.

From the outer of New York to the heart of Singapore, nature is everywhere you're not looking in some of Earth's most crowded big cities. Outdoor adventure is often just a few stops on the train—or a short drive away from the annoying crowds. Here are a few favorites to get you going:

        Mount Hollywood Trail(林间小道,乡间小路), Los Angeles

It's not a skyscraper or a Ferris wheel, and there's no expensive restaurant up top. But if you want an absolutely unforgettable, no admission charged, 360degree view of the entire Los Angeles region, it's yours. All you have to do is to walk a little. One of the preferred exercise routes, the Mount Hollywood Trail, is easily accessed from the parking lot of the famous Griffith Observatory; you see what you get at the end of this steep 1.5mile trail, which winds its way through the Griffith Park winds up to the mountain's 1,640foot peak.

    Bronx River, New York

It may not be on your Top 10 list of things to do when you finally get to the Big Apple, but exploring the almost secret river that flows through one of New York's most mysterious boroughs(自治市) is an unforgettable experience. The Bronx River Alliance, a nonprofit group that has worked tirelessly to bring the much abused river back to life, operates cycling and canoeing trips along the river, from the rugged Hunts Point section down near the harbor on up through the borough.

        Southern Islands, Singapore

Believe it or not, tightly packed Singapore does have plenty of open space left. There are actual trails right in the middle of everything, if you know where to look. But to really get away from it all, the Southern Islands, a small group of little green dots just off the city state's southern shoreline, are just the thing.

        Lee Valley, London

This East London river valley changed last summer, when anyone near a television got an eyeful of Olympic Park, built directly in the middle of the valley. Inside the park, beautifully landscaped sections quickly became a favorite relaxation spot for games goers. At present, you'll find miles of walking paths worth exploring.Start at the Waltham Cross train and follow the signposted walking route southbound, guiding you past important historic industrial areas, through interesting city neighborhoods, past the western side of Olympic Park and on to the Thames.

28. If someone wants to enjoy an unforgettable experience for free, he can go to                 .

It was a transitional(过渡期的)time in Daniel’s life. I wanted to leave him some words of  42 . But nothing came from my  43  and this was not the first time I had let such a moment  44 .

My father and I loved each other. Yet, I always 51  never hearing him put his  52   into words and never having the memory of that moment. Now, I could feel my hands sweat and my throat 53  . Why is it so  54  to tell a son something from the heart?
