What is most important?

It takes a lot of understanding, time and trust to gain a close friendship with someone. As I 21 a time in my life of complete uncertainty, my friends are my most   22 wealth.

I had a friend who felt that way. I 23 next to Hal’s “death-bed” and thought about the fact that I had known him for over twenty years. Hal knew he was 24   and that these next few days would be his last. I held his hand.

We spent time recalling about his long and   25 career as a teacher. We talked about old friends. We chatted about his family. And I  26 as he offered a piece of wisdom to someone he believed represented a “younger generation”.

Hal seemed to 27 consider what he was about to say next. Then he 28 my hand, gazed intently into my eyes and   29 , just loud enough for me to hear, “Nothing is more important than relationships.”

I knew that this 30 somehow mattered a great deal to him. He seemed to 31   a lifetime of experiences—personal, professional, and family — and this one 32  observation surfaced above the rest: “Nothing is more important than   33  .”

“Don’t get too caught up in your 34 ,” he said. “No program, no task —NOTHING—is more important than your friends and family.” I never knew Hal that well,  35   I wondered if he were talking as much to himself as to me.

“Remember ,” he repeated  36 .”that in the end, only your relationships will matter.  37 them well.”

Someone put it this way: “Beginning today,” he said. “  38   everyone you meet as if he or she were going to be  39  by midnight. Extend to them all the care, kindness and understanding you can gather, and do so with no thought of any   40   . Your life will never be the same again.”

At the end of a long life, my friend Hal would have agreed.

While it is impossible to live completely free of stress, it is possible to prevent stress as well as reduce its effect when it can’t be avoided. The US Department of Health and Human Services offers the following suggestions for ways to deal with stress.

l         Try physical activity

When you are nervous, angry or upset, try releasing (释放) the pressure through exercise or physical activity. ___36___

l         Take care of yourself

You should make every effort to eat well and get enough rest. If you easily get angry and cannot sleep well enough, or if you are not eating properly, it will be more likely that you will fall into situations of stress. ___37___

l         Make time for yourself

___38___ Don’t forget, play can be just as important as work. You need a break from your daily routine to just relax and have fun. Go window-shopping or work on a hobby. Allow yourself at least a half hour each day to do something you enjoy.

l         ___39___

Stress can result from disorganization (杂乱无章) and a feeling that “there is so much to do, and not enough time.” Trying to take care of everything at once can be too much for you and, as a result, you may not achieve anything. Instead, make a list of everything you have to do, then do one thing at a time. ___40___ Only in this way will you finish all you need to do and feel less stressful.

A. Bear in mind the most important task.

B. Schedule time for both work and play.

C. Check off each task as it is completed.

D. Make a list of the things you need to do.

E. For example, you could take your job as your bobby.

F. If stress repeatedly keeps you from sleeping, you should consult a doctor.

G. Running, walking, or playing tennis are just some of the activities you might try.

According to a new US study, couples who expect their children to help care for them in old age should hope they have daughters because they are likely to be twice as attentive overall.

The research by Angelina Grigoryeva, a sociologist at Princeton University, found that, while women provide as much care for their elderly parents as they can manage, men do as little as they can get away with and often leave it to female family members.

Her analysis of the family networks of 26,000 older Americans concluded that gender(性别) is the most

important predictor(预示物) of whether or not people will actively care for elderly parents.

In a paper being presented at the annual conference of the American Sociological Association in San Francisco, she concludes that simply having a sister makes men statistically likely provide less care.

Using data from the University of Michigan Health and Retirement Study, a study which has been tracking a cross-section of over-50s for the last decade, she calculated that women provide an average of 12.3 hours a month of care for elderly parents while men offer only 5.6 hours.

“Whereas the amount of elderly parent care daughters provide is associated with limitations they face, such as employment or childcare, sons’ caregiving is associated only with the presence or absence of other

helpers, such as sisters or a parent’s spouse(配偶),” she explained.

“Sons reduce their relative caregiving efforts when they have a sister, while daughters increase theirs when they have a brother.”

“This suggests that sons pass on parent caregiving responsibilities to their sisters.”

In the UK, the 2011 census(人口普查) showed that there are now around 6.5 million people with caring responsibilities – a figure which has risen by a tenth in a decade.

But many are doing so at the risk of their own health. The census showed that those who provide 50 hours or more of care a week while trying to hold down a full- time job are three times more likely to be struggling with ill health than their working counterparts(相对应的人) who are not carers.

32. What’s the most important factor to predict if people will actively care for the elderly?

A.  Gender.                  B. Education.

C. Career.                  D. Family networks. 33.The US study finds that                   .

A.  sons are twice likely as daughters to care for parents in old age

B.  having a sister makes men less likely to do their fair share

C.  sons and daughters seem to give equal care to their parents

D.  sons are unwilling to leave caregiving responsibilities to female family members 34.What does the author stress in the last paragraph?

A.  People should give up their jobs to care for the elderly.

B.  Many care providers work longer hours than others.

C.  People shouldn’t pass on caring responsibilities to others.

D.  Many care providers have potential health problems. 35.The author develops the text by        .

A.  explaining social networks of careers

B.  describing people’s experiences

Recently the barbican museum in London held an exhibition called the rain room. During the time this exhibition was open, my twitter stream was filled with photos of people standing in the rain room, accompanied by the caption “rain room@ the barbican!” and a location attachment to prove that they were indeed in the rain room.

This got me thinking. What were people actually saying by Tweeting about their visit? I think all they were doing was fulfilling the obligation that we have to share. Not sharing in the sense of treasuring a moment with people close to us, but sharing in the sense of “tell the world that I am doing a thing”.

It’s not sharing; it’s showing off. When we log in to Facebook or Twitter we see an infinitely updating stream of people enjoying themselves. It’s not real life, because people only post about the good things whereas all the dull or deep stuff doesn’t get mentioned. But despite this obvious fact, it subconsciously makes us feel like everyone is having a better time than us.

This is the curse of our age. We walk around with the tools to capture extensive data about our surroundings and transmit them in real-time to every friend we’ve made. We end up with a reduced understanding of reality because we’re more concerned about choosing a good Instagram filter(过滤器) for our meal than how it tastes.

I don’t think that it’s inherently wrong to want to keep the world updated about that you’re doing. But when you go through life robotically posting about everything you do, you’re not a human being. You’re just a prism that takes bits of light and sound and channels them into the cloud.

The key thing to remember is that you are not enriching your experiences by sharing them online; you are detracting from them because all your efforts are focused on making the look attractive to other people. Once you stop seeing things through the eyes of the people following you on Twitter or Facebook or Instagram, you can make your experiences significant, because you were there and you saw the sights and smelled the smells and heard the sounds, not snapped a photo of it through a half-inch camera lens.

59. What do we learn from the first two paragraphs?

A. Rain Room exhibition received a large audience in London.

B. Most of people feel obligated to share their experience with friends.

C. Many people want to inform others of their experience by Tweeting.

D. All people having gone to the Rain Room took pictures.

60. It seems to the author that ___________.

A. Facebook or Twitter is a good place where we share personal experience

B. people seldom show depressing stuff on the social networking websites

C. most of people tend to show off that they are having a better time than others

D. sharing experience on the social networking websites is not real life

61. What suggestion does the author give in the last paragraph?

A. Enrich your experiences by sharing them online.

B. Make efforts to make your life attractive to others.

C. Stop showing your personal experience.

D. Record the details of what you see, smell and hear.

Florida deputy Gene Smith thought the calls about a kangaroo wandering on the street were part of a prank. But WTSP reports that the story was true: A five-foot-tall, 200-pound kangaroo was hopping around Pasco County on Sunday.

Then the call came that it was now on US 301. Gene Smith, who noted that the calls were the strangest he'd received during 17 years on the force, said, "Sure enough, there was a kangaroo in the middle of the road. It was a pretty big and extremely strong animal. It wasn't until I grabbed those legs that I realized just how strong they were. It doesn't look like that on TV."

In fact, the kangaroo was so strong that police couldn't catch it. Along with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the Pasco County Sheriff's Office Agricultural Unit, they tried a number of approaches to wrangle in the animal without seriously injuring it. But even tranquilizers (镇定剂) could not slow down the creature. Eventually, local resident Kevin Wehling, who said “he had heard rumors about the kangaroo and wanted to see it for himself,” captured the animal.

Kangaroos typically do not attack humans unless they are angered. However, an Australian politician was recently knocked down and scratched facing a kangaroo while out for a morning jog. They can become more aggressive when hungry or thirsty, or, in this case, when they find themselves in a strange environment with a team of police officers hunting them down.

Police still have no idea who owns the kangaroo have now placed it in the care of a vet. Technically, you can raise a kangaroo in the Sunshine State if you have the right permits. In theory, wildlife officials should be able to narrow the field and pinpoint (查明) where the stray kangaroo came from.

36. What does the underlined word "prank" in Paragraph 1 mean?

    A. Task.            B. Plan.            C. Trick.           D. Show.

37. According to what Gene Smith said in Para-graph 2, we infer that____.

    B. he had seen many kangaroos in the wild before

    C. he had always worried that kangaroos would attack people

    D. he didn't expect capturing the kangaroo would be that hard

38. What role did Kevin Wehling play in the action of capturing the kangaroo?

    A. He managed to put the kangaroo under control.

    B. He shot tranquilizers into the body of the kangaroo.

    C. He spread rumors that the kangaroo was unbeatable.

    D. He stood in the way of the kangaroo and slowed it down.

39. What can we infer from Paragraph 4?

    A. Kangaroos are the gentlest animals in the world.

A popular CCTV host’s “improper remarks” that were caught on video at a dinner party have led to an investigation into the incident and a suspension(暂停) of his programs.

The video, released online on Monday, showed host Bi Fujian using vulgar words about Chairman Mao Zedong while singing in the style of Peking Opera, enraging(激怒) some netizens and causing a stir(轰动)on the Internet.

CCTV said on its micro blog on Wednesday that it will investigate the incident, which it said many have found disturbing.

Bi’s programs will stop being broadcast until at least Sunday, as his comments in the video have seriously damaged the broadcaster’s image, Huaxi Metropolis Daily quoted a CCTV staff member as saying.

The CCTV employee said it is uncertain whether the programs can be broadcast again after Sunday, the report added.

Bi, 56, is popular for a hosting style that engages the audience. He has hosted the CCTV Spring Festival Gala since 2012, as well as a popular talent show involving Westerners speaking Chinese. The cancellation was the first decision after Nie Chenxi was named CCTV president on Tuesday, the report said, adding that Nie had ordered all staff members to strictly correct work styles.

A micro-blogger named Zhou Junchi said that free speech doesn’t mean it is OK to defame others, adding that Bi’s comments were not proper for a popular host. Cheng Manli, a professor specializing in communication at Peking University, echoed Zhou, saying Bi should pay more attention to his behavior and speech as a public figure.

“It does not mean we cannot share our opinions, but using ugly words and sarcasm to comment on Chinese leaders who have passed away is improper,” Cheng said.

“The actions and words of celebrities are easily broadened in today’s Internet era, which is open and can have a huge influence, so it is a must for the public figures to boost the quality of their speech and behavior. Otherwise, their images will be affected, such as the stars who were recently punished for drug use,” she said.

“Everyone should take responsibility for what he or she says in public and online. It’s better, I think, to share different ideas in a normal way,” she suggested. But she added that the party in the video seemed private, “so its release is also improper to some extent.”

The video was recorded by someone sitting on Bi’s right, but who it is and why the video was put online is unknown.
