Advertising is the key to the success of any business. To ensure a long and lasting success, a business must advertise in some way.
It has been said that the best form of advertising is word of mouth advertising. It's free and most people believe it. Usually, word of mouth advertising comes from satisfied customers that wish to share their experience with their friends, family and co-workers about a product, and in turn new customers come to the business.
While word of mouth is a wonderful and free way to advertise, it isn't the "be all end all" of advertising. Advertising on television, the radio, and printing is still a very effective advertising method, but the method is quite expensive and not suitable for the small businesses.
A more economical but effective way is to advertise online. The Internet is such an important part of daily life that it is hard not to advertise on it. The number of ways to advertise online is endless. There are several types of e-mail marketing campaigns, like link advertising and websites. Now, e-mail marketing campaigns are more popular than traditional postal mail marketing, which is slow and ineffective.
Many business owners use strategic networking to advertise their businesses. It's a way for business owners to meet each other, get the word out about their companies, and even to enlarge their business fields.
One new kind of successful advertising is through social networking. It's much like strategic networking in that it's usually free and done by meeting and discussing products. However, social networking is done through modern media, such as websites, blogs, and the Internet. Both of them are highly effective.
Whichever method of advertising is used, a business must use long-time advertising campaigns to keep itself successful.

Professor Carl Jones won the 2016 Indianapolis Prize --the highest honor inthe field of animal conservation--for his 40 years of work in Mauritius, where he saved an endangered kestrel (a kind of bird) from becoming the next Dodo.
When the 61-year-old first travelled to the east African island in the 1970s he was told to close down a project to save the Mauritius kestrel. At the time there were just four left in the wild, making it the rarest bird on Earth.
However he stayed, performing the controversial techniques of captive breeding (圈养 繁殖 ) and a technique known as ‘double-clutching’, which included taking eggs from the birds’ nests and hatching them under incubators(孵 卵器 ), motivating the mothers to lay another set of eggs in the wild.
A decade later, the number of Mauritius kestrels had soared to over 300 and today there are
around 400 in the wild.
Reflecting on the start of his career, he said the Mauritius kestrel project had been seen as a “dead loss” at the time.
In the 1970s there was fierce opposition to the captive breeding techniques, with critics (批 评 者 ) arguing that they were too risky and took the emphasis off breeding in the wild.
“As a young man in my 20s, I certainly didn’t enjoy the stress and the tension of the criticism I
received,” Prof Jones, who now lives in Llanwrda, Powys, said.
He said receiving the prize was particularly important to him because it showed his work to save birds was reasonable, whereas previous winners have tended to concentrate on more high profile (惹 人注 目的 ) species, like polar bears or elephants.
Dr Lee Durrell, director for Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust, said: “Carl is living proof that by having the courage, talent and vision to take small steps, we can win victories for species large and small.”
25. What can we learn about Dodo?
A. It is a kind of endangered bird. B. It is a rare species of bird alive.
C. It no longer exists in the world. D. It is saved by Professor Carl Jones.
26. Why did Professor Carl Jones take eggs from the birds’ nests ?
A. To do some research on the eggs. B. To find out if man can hatch them.
C. To protect them from becoming bad. D. To stimulate the males to lay more eggs.
27. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “soared” in Paragraph 4?
A. increased B. registered C. gathered D. survived
28. What is the difference between Carl and previous winners?
A. He used unique techniques. B. What he did was more valuable.
C. He has more courage, talent and vision. D. The species he has saved was less striking.

Wearing ties was originally the mark of Britain’s most powerful classes, which made the tie itself a symbol of power and respect. And that led it to be adopted by a much larger tribe —— the business tribe.
You cannot wear a tie if you work with machinery. So wearing a tie became a sign that you were a man who used his brain to make a living, rather than your hands. It showed you were serious. It showed you were a professional. It meant that everyone who wanted a job in business had to wear one. It was just impossible to take seriously a man who didn’t wear a piece of colored silk around his neck.
This is how millions of people came to be wearing ties across the world. They are part of the uniform of business.
“Ties offer a point of different," says John Milne, head of the British Guild of Tie Makers. “They give a chance to say something about their own personality.”
So if you happen to meet a man with a very brightly colored tie, there is a good chance that he is the office joker. There is also a good chance that he will be wearing brightly colored socks.
Is there a future for ties? The signs are not promising. Tie wearing seems to be rare amongst the new bread of entrepreneurs(创业者) in the Internet and new technology industries. Many political leaders, including former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, now go without ties. This shows they are men of the people—but not the people wearing ties.
Up until around 1960, it was common for men across the Western world to wear hats as part of their business uniform. That changed with the election of John F. Kennedy to the presidency of the United States. Kennedy never wore a hat——in fact his nickname was "hatless Jack". Seeing that the most powerful man in the world did not have to wear a hat, millions of other men decided that they did not have to, either. Hats simply vanished across the Western world.Perhaps "tieless Tony" (former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair) will have the same effect as "hatless Jack".
29. In Britain, ties were first used as a sign to show a person’s ________.
A.personality B.social position C.wearing style D. favorite hobby
30. In the business world, wearing a tie was necessary because ________.
A.it showed you used your brain B.it showed you got a good salary
C.it showed you were an employer D.It showed you were well-equipped
31. The writer may hold the opinion that________
A.Blair is the best leader in the world.
B.Kennedy is the best leader in the world.
C.millions of people will go to work without a tie.
D.people will wear hats instead of ties.

Thousands of people were attracted to a 2-meter-wide lane in Tongcheng,Anhui province this spring festival. Although_61_was impossible to count the exact number,at least 5,000 people visited it each day.
This narrow lane,_62_(call) Liuchi Lane in Chinese, won greater popularity after the story behind it was broadcast on a CCTV show.At first glance it may seem unimportant, but to those_63_know its history,Liuchi Lane means much more than its_64_(appear).In the early Qing Dynasty it served_65_the boundary between Zhang family and Wu family. They quarrelled_66_(fierce) over which family had the right to build a wall on the dividing line. After_67_(fail) to make a compromise, the Zhangs turned to Zhang Ying,a family member of Zhangs and also a top official in the emperor's court.To_68_(they) surprise,Zhang Ying did not provide the support they needed. He called for his family to step back 1 meter from the boundary.Seeing that, the Wus_69_(agree) to move back another metre. Thus Liuchi Lane was born.
In reality, the story of Liuchi Lane is not only about how to get along with others,_70_also a guideline for all the officials in China.

February 14th is Valentine’s Day! In China, it is only a day for young boyfriends and girlfriends. But my teacher and friends in America told me that Valentine’s Day is a public day.
This was my first Valentine’s Day in America. I didn’t understand the customs(风俗) clearly. Maybe I didn’t need to send any gifts. I watched others to see what they did, so next time I can understand.
On that day, when we began the reading class, Mr. Peters gave every student some chocolates and said, “Happy Valentine’s Day!” I was very happy the teacher gave his students gifts and blessings. I never saw that in China. Maybe American teachers are very different. I didn’t buy a gift for the teacher, so I owed(欠) a gift to the teacher. Anyway, I want to say, ”Thank you, Mr. Peters, and I’m sorry.”
When we had a break, one of my classmates gave me a Pokemon card. It was very funny and I felt thankful, but I thought I owed a gift again.
When we were coming to our grammar class, suddenly I heard someone calling me. ”Shelly!” I stopped. Another classmate who had only been in our class one day gave me some chocolates. She said, “These are for you and your friends. Have a good day!” I was looking at her leaving and thinking that we were in the same class only one day, but now we are friends. That’s very great, but I owed a gift again.
When I came home, my Chinese friend sent some roses and chocolates. I was surprised and happy because I had never received roses in my past life, but I hoped it was the last gift. I didn’t want to owe more gifts.
