                                                                   Flash Mob(快闪族): The Pop Culture

If you see a group of people dancing and singing on the street or in the railway station, you don’t need to feel surprised. They are a flash mob. Who are they? Are they mobs (暴民)?  Actually, a flash mob is a group of people who gather suddenly in a public place, do something unusual for a brief period of time, and then quickly separate.

A flash mob is usually organized with the help of the Internet or other digital communications networks.  At a predetermined time, they gather and perform some tasks such as exchanging books, coming together to look at the sky, waving their hands and yelling(a loud sharp cry) something at the top of their lungs for 30 seconds. Then, they quickly disappear before the police can arrive.

Bill Wasik, senior editor of Harper's Magazine, organized the first flash mob in Manhattan in May 2003 and the first successful flash mob gathered on June 3, 2003 at Macy's department store. More than one hundred people stepped onto the ninth floor carpet department of Macy's department store, gathering around an expensive carpet. Following this flash mob, about 200 people flooded the lounge( public sitting-room) of the Hyatt hotel and applauded for about fifteen seconds.

Flash mob gatherings can sometimes shock people. Such an activity might seem amusing, but it might also frighten people who are not aware of what is taking place. They also have big economic potential(潜力), such as using flash mobs to advertise a product.

People use it to do many things. For example, in 2009, Michael Jackson's fans took part in a flash mob to remember him.       Hundreds of his fans gathered outside the railway station in Liverpool. They were singing and dancing Michael's famous song “Beat It”     together. And in another example, some people took part in a flash mob to tell more people not to use negative words.

Flash mobs give people from all walks of life an opportunity to come together to create a memory.

A.Don’t be confused by their name.

B.People are attracted by the silly and harmless activities.

C.The flash mob is now becoming more and more popular.

D.Using mobile phones, the flash mob can change their gathering place.

E.A later mob saw hundreds of people in Central Park making bird noises.

F.The messages may be forwarded to friends, who forward to more people.

G.Undoubtedly, flash mobs can serve as good political tools in any direction.

South Africa is the African continent's most advanced nation, yet it is reported that 3 million of its residents live without electricity. Many of them live in remote areas. In Gwakwani that has always been a sleepy little village, electricity is available (可利用的) for the first time in 2014.

Wilson Tshitande has lived in Gwakwani for as long as he can remember. He boasts that he knows every stick, every rock and every plant in the village with less than 100 people. He believes that electricity, which he knows little, will change people's life greatly. But the 70-year-old never thought he would see that electricity has finally come to his village.

The local officials say they don't have enough money to bring the lines from the power station to Gwakwani. Fortunately, the University of Johannesburg led an electricity project. A team from the university recently travelled 800 kilometers to the village to install (安装) solar panels donated by a local factory. There were a number of villages that were needy. Engineering lecturer M. Hove helped the university choose Gwakwani. As he said, he called it the forgotten village.

The small amount of power will first start a waterpump (水泵) that until now has run on dieselfuel (柴油). Godfrey Nefuluphudwe has operated the aging pump for four years. He travels once a month to the nearest town to buy the diesel fuel. He said he was grateful for the small amount of electricity. With electricity, they can live easily. They don’t have to move from their village to the town to charge phones or laptops. They will not always buy batteries for the radios. Now that electricity is finally coming, maybe its residents, young and old, will get a better connection to the modern world.

  1. (1) What was the life like in Gwakwani in the past?

A . People lived a modern life. B . People felt sleepy every day. C . Life was busy and colourful. D . People had no chance to use electricity.
  2. (2) What does the underlined word “boasts” in Paragraph 2 mean?

    A . Writes quickly. B . Reports carefully. C . Explains clearly. D . Talks too proudly.
  3. (3) People in Gwakwani now get electricity from _________.

    A . solar panels B . a local factory C . the power station D . the University of Johannesburg
  4. (4) What can we infer from the passage?

A . Residents can listen to the radios now. B . Electricity has made people's life easier. C . Gwakwani is the last village without electricity. D . People in Gwakwani have caught up with other people in the world.
  5. (5) What's the best title of the passage?

A . The remote villages of South Africa  B . The forgotten village — Gwakwani C . How to help Gwakwani get electricity D . Gwakwani gets electricity for the first time

Talking plants might sound like characters in a fairy tale. But recent scientific studies have shown that plants communicate with each other and with other living things in a surprising number of ways.To understand them, scientists say,we just have to learn their language.Farmers are especially interested in what plants have to say.

“Plants are able to communicate with all sorts of organisms (有机体).They can communicate with giant bacteria, with other plants and with insects. They do this chemically,” said Cahill,an Ecology Professor of the University of Alberta in Canada.

Plant scientists are just beginning to understand this chemical “language”.Cahill says studies have shown, for example, that plants can evaluate conditions in their immediate environment and take appropriate actions.Plants have an ability, for example,to signal pain or discomfort caused by anything from temperature extremes to an insect attack.Jack Schultz,a professor of chemical ecology at the University of Missouri, says when a plant senses that it's being eaten,it cannot walk away from trouble;on the contrary,it will release a chemical vapor that alerts other plants nearby.

“Their language is a chemical language, and it involves chemicals that move through the air that are easy to be changeable, and most of all are smells that we are familiar with,” Schultz explained.

“All plants responded to the attack by changing their chemistry to defend themselves,” Schultz recalled.“But we were quite surprised to find that nearby plants also changed their chemistry to defend themselves, even though they were not part of the experiment.”

Studies have also shown that plants under attack release pleasant chemicals. Those chemicals attract friendly insects that attack the pests eating the plant.

In the end, plants’ ability to communicate their needs—and our ability to understand them—could help farmers reduce the use of poisonous chemicals, cut operating costs and limit damage to the environment.

  1. (1) The recent scientific studies have shown that plants can________.

A . communicate with other living things in a chemical way B . hardly react to any sudden change in temperature C . use a very special chemical language which is familiar to us D . respond to the attack by giving off poisonous chemicals
  2. (2) When being eaten by an insect, the plant will________.

A . walk away from trouble B . change its chemistry to kill the insect C . release a chemical vapor to “ask” other plants for help D . give off nice chemicals to attract friendly insects killing the pest
  3. (3) The underlined word “alert” most probably means “________”.

    A . warn B . protect C . threaten D . allow
  4. (4) Which would be the best title for the passage?

    A . Communication between Plants B . A Chemical “Language” C . Plants Can Talk D . How Plants Protect Themselves
