Have you watched the movie YOLO directed by Jia Ling this winter vacation? It is one of the most popular movies during the Spring Festival of the Loong year, 2024 and helped bring Jia's total box office (总票房) to over 8. 8 billion yuan. Jia Ling is a famous Chinese actress and filmmaker. She is known for her comedic performances on TV and for her successful movie Hi, Mom (box office: RMB 5. 4 billion, 2021). In her new movie YOLO, she plays the lead role Leying, a woman in her thirties who still lives with her parents until one day, she meets a boxing coach (拳击教练), who just changes her life. After over a year out of people's eyes, fans are excited to see Jia Ling back and expect to see her hard work pay off on the big screen. Jia looks like a quite different person in YOLO because of a weight loss of 50kg. This has sparked a lot of interest on social media. In a recent Weibo post, Jia shared that she had been working hard on the movie for a year. "Actually the movie has nothing to do with weight loss or even boxing but is about learning to love yourself. " said Jia in her post. Slimming down from 100kg to 50kg can't be made overnight. Jia Ling has shown people through her actions that if you can't stand the pain of self-discipline (自律), you will have to accept the mediocrity (接受平庸) of yourself. And that's why she named the movie with the popular word YOLO, which means you only live once, to encourage people to challenge (挑战) themselves.

As we all know, whales are the biggest animal living in oceans. However, how long whales can live in fresh water has become a matter of some discussion because of several visits of whales to fresh water (淡水). The interest in this matter first became hottest in 1985 when Humphrey, the name of a humpback whale (座头鲸), succeeded living in the fresh water of the Sacramento River for several weeks before finally returning to the Pacific Ocean. The matter happened again in May of 2007, when a mother whale and her baby whale entered the Sacramento River. Some experts say that it is uncommon to see whales in fresh water for more than a few weeks because most whales are built for saltwater environments. Scientists are not quite sure how long whales can live in fresh water because they can't get the food they usually have in the sea. Besides, small cuts, for example, are easily cured (治愈) in salt water. Fresh water environments do not have the materials (材料) which are good for cuts. Fresh water environments are also not natural for a whale's swimming and other activities. Most whales swim in water that is at least 20 feet ( 6. 1m) deep. Fresh water rivers may be only a few feet deeper than the girth (围度) of a whale's body. This makes it more possible for them to be beached. Many whales are migratory (迁徙的) animals by habit. Because they are not used to the route they take, whales can easily get lost. That's probably why we have the chance to see whales in fresh water. Although it may be interesting to see whales in fresh water, whale lovers actually worry about the matter.

Often, Americans don't say all the letters in each word, especially consonants (辅音) like "t" and "d". For example, Americans may say "I dunno" but not "I don't know". For example, Americans say the "a" in "half" like the "a" in "cat," but the British say the "a" in "half" like the "a" in "aah". Sound is not the only difference between British English and American English. Many words and expressions are different in the two countries. In England, if you are going to telephone a friend, you "ring her up". In America, you "give her a call". The British use the word "lovely" to describe something they like. Americans use the word "cool" or "great". There are some differences in grammar, too. It is common that Americans almost always use the helping verb "do" with the verb "have". They might say "Do you have a pen?" They might say "Have you got a pen?" These differences can be confusing (令人混淆的) if you are learning English. But there is a reason for the differences. Languages change over time. When the same language is used in different places, it changes differently in each place. It also happened to other languages, such as French. Many people in Canada speak French, but their French is different from the French spoken in France. A. The British often ask the question in a different way. B. This is what happened to English. C. Also, some letters have different sounds. D. However, the British usually make their consonants sound clearer. E. Don't you think English has changed a lot over the years? |

How much do you know about Chinese oil-paper umbrellas? They are not just tools (工具) to keep people away from rain or sunlight, but also works of art (艺术品) with rich cultural meaning in China. Chinese oil-paper umbrellas are one of the world's oldest umbrellas. According to historical records, the first oil-paper umbrella came out during the Eastern Han Dynasty. They soon became very popular, especially among the literati (文人). They loved to write and draw on the umbrella to show their literacy tastes and painting skills. Oil-paper umbrellas are a necessary part of traditional Chinese weddings (婚礼). A red oil-paper umbrella is needed when the bride (新娘) goes into the groom's home. That's because people believe the umbrella can help stop bad luck. Also, the sound of oil-paper in Chinese sounds like "youzi", which means having more children. It takes quite a lot of time and effort to make a Chinese oil-paper umbrella by hand. Luzhou in southwest China's Sichuan Province is now the only main production place for handmade oil-paper umbrellas in China. There, craftsmen (手艺人) must complete more than 90 steps and use over 100 different tools to make a single umbrella. With all their efforts, a traditional oil-paper umbrella made in Luzhou can stand strong winds and 3,000 openings and closings.
