Everyone needs friends. There is an old saying, "Friends are God's way of taking care of us." But how do you find real friendship and keep it?

The American writer Sally Seamans tells young students some smart ways to make friends. Sally says finding friendship is just like planting a tree. You plant the seed (种子)and take care of it to make it grow.

First, you should choose a friend. What makes a good friend? It is not because a person has money or good looks. A good friend should be kind and patient(耐心). For example, if you have a bad day, a good friend should listen to your complaints and do his best to help. To make a good friend, you cannot be too shy. You should make each other happy and share your lives.

But things cannot always be happy. Even the best friends have fights. What should you do when you have a fight with your friend? You have to talk to him or her. When there is no one around, have an honest talk. If he or she doesn't want to talk, you could write a letter.

There are three steps to being friends again: Tell him or her how you are feeling; say what your friend has done wrong, and explain why you did this or that. Remember that friendship is the most important thing in your life.

  1. (1) What makes good friends? A good friend should ________.
A . be lovely and cool B . have good looks C . have lots of money D . be kind and patient
  2. (2) According to the text, you can ________ your friend after a fight.
    A . buy a present for B . never say a word to C . write a letter to D . have dinner with
  3. (3) All the following statements are correct except ________.
A . A good friend should try his best to help you when you have a bad day. B . Shyness is good for making a good friend. C . Even the best friends may not agree with each other. D . Friendship is important in one's life.
  4. (4) What is the best title of the text?
A . Teenagers and friendship. B . Finding and keeping friendship. C . The trouble of growing up. D . Good friends around you.

On television all over the world, there are programs about the work of the police. They are popular because they are usually very exciting. In London, there is a television program called "Police Five"—because it is on for five minutes once a week. A television reporter, Shaw Taylor, talks about crimes in the London area. He asks for public help. The police station needs the help of ordinary people because sometimes you or I have information that can be useful to the police.

Shaw Taylor shows pictures of paintings, jewelry and other things which thieves stole during the week.

Sometimes he shows the car that the thieves escaped in. When people see men or things on the television program which they may remember, they can tell the police where they saw them. With their help, the police may catch more criminals.

When I lived in Spain, some Spanish friends of mine decided to visit England by car. Before they left, they asked me for advice about how to find accommodation (住所). I suggested that they should stay at "bed and breakfast" houses, because this kind of accommodation gives a foreign visitor a good chance to speak English with the family. My friends listened to my advice, but they came back with some funny stories.

"We didn't stay at bed and breakfast houses,'' they said, "because we found that most families were away on holiday."

I thought this was strange. Finally I understood what had happened. My friends spoke little English, and they thought "VACANCIES" meant "holidays", because the Spanish word for "holidays" is "vacaciones". So they did not go to the house where the sign outside said "VACANCIES", which in English means there are free rooms. Then my friends went to the house where the sign said "NO VACANCIES", because they thought this meant the people who owned the house were not away on holiday. But they found that these houses were all full. As a result, they stayed at hotels!

We laughed about this and about mistakes my friends made in reading other signs. In Spanish, the word "DⅣERSION" means fun. In English, it means that workmen are repairing the road, and that you must take a different road. When my friends saw the word "DⅣERSION" on a road sign, they thought they were going to have fun. Instead, the road ended in a large hole.

English people have problems too when they learn foreign languages. Once in Paris when someone offered me some more coffee, I said "Thank you" in French. I meant that I would like some more. However, to my surprise the coffee pot was taken away! Later I found out that "Thank you" in French means "No, thank you".

  1. (1) My Spanish friends wanted advice about ______.
A . driving their car on English roads B . going to England by car C . finding places to stay in England D . learning English
  2. (2) I suggested that they stay at "bed and breakfast" houses because ______.
A . it would he much cheaper than staying in hotels B . it would be convenient for them to have dinner C . they would he able to practice their English D . there would be no problem in finding accommodation there
  3. (3) "NO VACANCIES" in English means______.
    A . free rooms B . no free rooms C . not away on holiday D . holidays
  4. (4) When someone offered me more coffee and I said "Thank you" in French, I ______.
A . wanted him/her to take the coffee pot away B . didn't really want any more coffee C . wanted to express my politeness D . really wanted some more coffee

Some people learn a second language easily. Other people have trouble learning a new language. How can you help yourself learn a new language, such as English?

For example, write in a journal every day. You will get used to writing in English, and you will feel comfortable expressing your ideas in English. After several weeks, you will see that your writing is improving. You can practice with your classmates outside class. Be positive about learning English and believe that you can do it. If you believe that you can learn, you will learn.

After each class, think about what you did. Did you answer a question correctly? Did you understand something the teacher explained? Perhaps the lesson was difficult, but you tried to understand it. .

If you feel stressed by responsibilities at work, you should take a step back and identify (识别) those of (great) and less importance. Then, handle the most important tasks first so you'll feel a real sense of (achieve). Leaving the less important things until tomorrow (be) often acceptable.

Most of us are more focused our tasks in the morning than we are later in the day. So, get an early start and try to be as productive possible before lunch. This will give you the confidence you need to get you through the afternoon and go home feeling accomplished.

Recent (study) show that we are far more productive at work if we take short breaks (regular). Give your body and brain a rest by stepping outside for while, exercising, or doing something you enjoy.

"Happy birthday, dear Rhea, happy birthday to you!" Silence penetrated (穿透) the room.

"Make a wish," my mom said in a sweet whisper. Now, I'm a straight A student, confident and popular, but that's not what I was a year ago. It was my mom's love that made me what I am today. Looking around the room filled with my friends, I couldn't help but smile.

I wish...

Memories flooded back. The December morning breeze brushed my long, black hair as I stepped towards the doors of Hagenberg High. It was my first day of school. Only two weeks ago, my mom and I migrated to America, hoping for a bright new life.

My English was poor, and I was alone, like a lost little kid. I unknowingly avoided interacting with anyone because I was afraid they'd laugh in my face. When my English was better, I decided, I would come up to people and maybe manage to say, "Whussup?"

Finally in gym class, a friendly brown face. She almost looked like me, only happier .Her name was Caroline. At lunchtime we found ourselves enjoying the cafeteria food. She wanted me to meet her friends. "Don't worry Rhea," she assured me, calling me "sister", "You'll fit right in."

And I did. It was as if some foreign soul entered my body and made me do things against my will. I found

myself drinking beer, smoking cigarettes and skipping school. I didn't even like the taste of beer. The moment it touched my tongue I felt like I had to spit it back. But I didn't. I couldn't afford to look bad and lose my new "friends". I began to miss at least one day of school a week to hang out with them. Then I missed two, three, even four days in a row.

But while I was out having fun with my "friends," inside I was full of conflict, unhappiness and regret. I stopped practicing my English sentences in front of the mirror and instead practiced, "I don't know why the school called, mom. There must be something wrong in the system because I did not miss school today."

注意:

1)续写词数应为150左右。

One day the school teacher called my mom and the truth came out.

……

My mom's voice awakened me from my thoughts, "Have you made your birthday wish yet, sweetie?"
