阅读理解If you're prone to browse through Twitter, or can't take yet another stressful headline in the news, Oprah Winfrey has some suggestions on what books to read next. Song of Solomon By Toni Morrison American author Toni Morrison was one of Winfrey's longtime friends. Winfrey described Morison as "a magician with language who understood the power of words" after her death in August 2019. The 1977 novel Song of Solomon tells the story of a fictional man from Michigan named Milkman Dead. Between the World and Me By Ta-Nehisi Coates Winfrey called Ta-Nehisi Coates "a bearer of the torch, who carries on the legacy of our ancestors and is also entirely so original." This nonfiction book, Between the World and Me, which won the National Book Award in 2015, is formatted as a letter to Coates' son and grapples with inequality and race in America. The Soul of America By Jon Meacham Winfrey recommends this United States history book, written by Pultizer Prize-winner Jon Meacham, "to guide me and help me understand our current era and reassure that our country can bounce back from dark times." This book is especially prescient in light of the upcoming election. "In moments when public life feels unsatisfactory, then, it's instructive—even necessary—to remember first principles," writes Meacham. The Power of Now By Eckhart Tolle Winfrey said that The Power of Now by spiritual teacher Eckhart Tolle "has changed the way I see life." The book explores quandaries like: "How do you find peace when everything is in chaos?" Winfrey said.

阅读理解I was born in a poor community on the north side of Boston, US, raised by a single mother who didn't finish 3rd grade, lived each day on food stamps and attended what the media called "the most dysfunctional public school district". Not many people expected much of me, so I had to expect something of myself. On my 13th birthday, I bought a poster of Harvard to hang in my room. Being at Harvard became what I dreamt about. Even when my electricity was cut off and I woke up at 5:30 am to pitch blackness, I knew that my poster of Harvard was still hanging only two feet away from me. Reminding myself of my goal each day made it easy to say no to the same choices I saw my peers making, because those paths wouldn't have had me closer to my goal. Even poverty could not take away my power to decide what I choose to do with my day. The poster gave me the courage to cold email about 50 Harvard students so I could ask for feedback on my application essays; it gave me the energy to study just one more hour on my SATs when my friends were asleep; and it gave me the determination to submit just one more scholarship application when 180 others had already turned me down. Every day I could feel myself getting closer and closer to my goal as my writing got better, my SAT score increased, and my scholarship checks started coming in. Finally, an email arrived from Harvard. The first word was "Congratulations!" A month later, Harvard flew me up to visit the campus where for the first time I stepped onto my dreaming land. Who you are today is the result of the decisions you made yesterday, and who you will be tomorrow will be the result of the choices you make today. Who do you want to be tomorrow?

阅读理解One of my close friends seems to be distancing himself from me now. I have tried facing him, who just pretends I'm not there, and I've asked for advice from other friends. I feel I'm not good enough. What am I doing wrong to make someone act in such a manner toward me? If you also suffer from such a situation, you probably have come across a great principle of psychology: the tendency to see reality only through your own feelings and perspective. You will find a much smoother path through the social world if you recognize that not everything that happens to you is about you. In fact, many other possibilities exist. Perhaps your friend is busy with other matters or is dealing internally with problems of his own. What's troubling you is the double dose(剂量)of negativity about yourself—you assume you've done something wrong and, facing your friend's disturbing behavior, you're quick to call in bad feelings about yourself. As Eleanor Roosevelt said, "No one can make you feel bad without your permission." We humans are all imperfect creatures: if there is some aspect of your personality or behavioral style that you feel needs improvement, then you're just like everyone else. Studies show that a large number of people at every age want to better some fundamental aspect of themselves. The situation you're in calls for inquiry, which is especially helpful in repairing social relationships. If you want to know what's going on, you might approach your friend directly by saying how much you're feeling shut out from your friendship, that you miss it, and that you'd like to know what seems to have gone off the track. You'll get an honest response only by asking straight. And if it turns out that you did do something that wasn't well received, you can decide whether it's something about you that needs fixing.

阅读理解Denmark has introduced a fat-tax in order to fight obesity (肥胖症), heart disease and other serious diseases. The government wants to improve expectation of life and the health of the Danish people. Butter, potato chips, ground beef and pork are among the products that are to be taxed. After one or two years the government plans to see how the tax worked and if it has any effect on people's eating habits. Denmark already has tax on sugar and ice cream. Although only 10% of the Danish population is overweight, the country's food experts think that fat may account for higher death rates. They also argue that the tax should not be limited to fats alone, because people might switch to other unhealthy foods with sugar and salt in them. Even if Denmark cuts the amount of fat that people consume only by a small part, it will be a signal to other countries that are watching closely, especially the European countries that are planning similar measures. Finland is working on a fat tax, based on the Danish model. Hungary has recently started to tax food that has a high share of salt, sugar and caffeine. Denmark's fat tax is being opposed by the country's food industry, especially the meat producers. If people do cut more meat out of their diet, it may mean that farmers' earnings will decline. Denmark is one of the world's largest bacon and pork producers. On the other side, the new measure is expected to bring the government about $ 400 million additional tax dollars a year.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。For as long as he could remember, Jack had dreamed of being in the Olympics. For years he had worked hard to become a good skater, training and practicing. He was always getting better. Now he and his teammates, on behalf of the American skating team, were in a city of Italy for the Winter Olympics. They were on their way to the opening parade. Athletes from all over the world were gathering to march into the Olympic stadium. Jack and his partners were laughing and joking, and their hearts were beating with joy. Everything was perfect -well, almost everything except that the sleeve (袖子) of Jack's Olympic jacket had been torn. He loved the red, white and blue jacket, with the Olympic rings on the back. But earlier that day he had torn it by accident. "Too bad about your jacket," his friend Bill told him. "Oh, I don't think anyone will notice it," said Jack. "The audience will probably notice it," said Bill, "They'll probably laugh at us." Suddenly, a little Italian girl came up to Jack and pointed right at the tear in his sleeve. Jack smiled at her, not knowing what to do. So he said, "Uh, good morning!" The little girl smiled at him. And she kept speaking Italian words that Jack couldn't understand, when she was pointing to his torn sleeve. Jack looked at his friends and said, "I don't know what she wants. The little girl began pulling Jack's jacket. Her eyes were very bright and her long blond hair fell over the back of her winter coat. "What are you doing?" Jack asked, but he knew she couldn't understand him. Suddenly, she started taking off her own coat. Then she looked up at him. "She wants you to take off your jacket!" Bill said. "Oh, I get it, said Jack." She wants to try it on. Sure, here you go." He took off the jacket and handed it to the girl. She took it. But when he raised his head again, she was running off with his jacket. "Hey!" he cried. "The little thief!" Bill shouted angrily. "She is stealing it!" Jack ran a few steps after her. Paragraph 1: But in an instant, she disappeared along the crowded street. Paragraph 2: The Italian girl just smiled at Jack, and in her hands was his jacket, which had already been mended. |
