Sometimes, it's great fun to show people that they are important through some acts of kindness. My daughter Cindy was kind of1in the past, but one thing made her very active and outgoing.

I still remember one thing which happened to us the other day. Last 2 , Cindy had a stomachache, so I took3 to see the doctor. Cindy was so worried that she wanted to cry. At that time, a lady came to us and12 the bill for us. Oh, she was the lady who was at the13 office last month. I said" thank you" to her. She said, "l was moved by your daughter's14."

Now we have always15helping others and a smile card is a good tool to do more. Of. , course, these smile cards have also changed my daughter's personality.

Three students are talking about the New Year tradition of their own country.

A. Christina from Spain

On the last day of the year, the 31st of December, people wait till 12 p. m. Everybody must have12 grapes to eat at midnight. At each sound of the clock, we must eat a grape. But we can't ever finish eating the grapes on time! Usually when people still have some grapes in their mouths, they look at each other and start to laugh. This tradition started in Spain long ago. One year, when there were a lot of grapes, the king of Spain decided to give grapes to everybody to eat on New Year's Eve.

B. Cordon from Britain

On New Year's Day in Britain, people have parties at 12 o'clock, the music stops, and we listen to the radio. On the radio we hear Big Ben, the famous clock in London. Then everybody sings a song about friendship and kisses their friends. We say "Happy New Year" to each other. It will be lucky if a tall man with dark hair is the first person to come to the house in the New Year. So l go and visit as many friends as l can. They all give me a drink.

C. Angela from Brazil

In all cities in Brazil, we have a big party on New Year's Eve, especially in Rio de Janeiro. People in this city go to the beaches to watch fireworks(烟火). We put flowers in the sea and think about things we want for ourselves or others. We usually wear white clothes for good luck during the New Year.

"Henry! Knock it off lf you do that one more time, I'm going to throw you out of this boat, warned Cameron angrily.

"Yeah, right," said Henry and half-heartedly rowed the boat up the river. Henry and Cameron were chosen to be partners, but they certainly weren't friends. Cameron looked down on Henry and spent his time at summer camp keeping away from him. Henry never followed the rules, and that drove Cameron crazy.

Cameron hated the fact that the boat ride was at least 5 miles long. Just then Cameron felt some small drops of water again on his neck.

"Henry!" shouted Cameron loudly. "I said to leave me alone."

"I'm not doing anything!" replied Henry coolly. "If you look up, you will see that Mother Nature is touching you with water."

Sure enough, when Cameron looked up, he could see light rain coming down. Things got quiet in the boat after that. Before long, the small drops turned into large ones, and thunder and lightning began racing across the sky. Cameron didn't know what to do. All he remembered was hearing stories about never to be on the water during a lightning storm.

There was nothing in sight. Where could they get shelter? At that moment, Henry took over. He guided Cameron to control the boat towards some small wooden houses up a head. By the time they reached the houses, they were all wet. Lightning continued to flash and they took shelter in the house.

Head teacher, teachers, grandparents, parents and classmates, I'm Betty and I'm proud that l have been chosen to speak to you all today. I'm a bit nervous as I've never spoken in public. So please forgive me if it shows!

As we all know, this is the school leavers' party, and it's time to say goodbye to everyone. We're sorry to leave you at the end of our junior high school education, and we promise that we'll never forget the happy time we have spent in these buildings with you all.

I'd like to thank three groups of people for the three things I've learnt while I've been a student at our school.

The first group is my friends, and what I've learnt is the importance of friend ship. We've worked hard together and we've even shared some difficult times together, but we've also had a lot of fun. Many of us will go to new schools and we may not see each other so often in the future. Others will go on to senior high school and keep their close friendships. But friends don't have to see each other all the time. Sometimes the friends you treasure most are the friends you see less often. A life without old friends is like a day without sunshine. We'll always stay in touch.

The second group is our parents and grandparents. We thank you for the love you have shown us during our years at school, for making a home where we feel both safe and relaxed, and where we can prepare ourselves for our schooldays. __▲_ How many of us get our good grades because of the suggestions you have made during those long evenings?

And finally, the third group is our teachers. We can never pay you back for your gift of knowledge which you have offered us. Sometimes you've been strict with us; sometimes you've made us work very hard. But you have always been fair and patient. And you'll always be our role models.

I couldn't say it better myself. So from the bottom of my heart, I thank you all and wish you success for the future.
