Smith had to drive across the Sahara Desert. It was a journey across hundreds of miles of empty desert. 

After he had been driving for a few hours, there was a sandstorm. His car left the road and then broke down. 

Smith began walking north across the hot sand under the scorching sun. He hoped he would soon reachthe road again. Soon, his tongue was thick with thirst. He needed water, but everywhere he looked there was nothing except sand. 

Smith kept walking. Then, about an hour later, a man riding a camel came into sight. Smith waved to him. The man on the camel rode up to him and stopped. "Please, " Smith said, "I am dying of thirst. Let me have some of your water. " The man slowly shook his head. "You can't have any water, " he said, "but I'll sell you a necktie. " "I don't want a necktie, " Smith shouted at him furiously. "I need water. " But the man turned away quickly and rode off. 

Smith continued walking. Two hours later, he met another man riding a camel. This time he asked if he could buy some water, but the man refused, saying, "No, but I'II sell you a necktie. " Angrily, Smith turned away from him and continued walking. 

Three hours later, by which time he was near death, Smith saw a large luxury hotel in the distance. It stood alone in the middle of the desert, surrounded by palm trees. 

Smith managed to reach the main entrance. He was about to enter the hotel when the doorman stopped him. "Hey!" he said. "This is a first-class hotel. You can't come in here without a necktie. "

I often wonder how people can get so angry, so deep in their own belief that they become deaf to anything that may differ from their beliefs. I've often been told that I'm too open-minded, listening to others' viewpoints so openly that they become my own. Maybe that comes from my practice of actively listening to others. It means that I do really hear them instead of responding only out of politeness. Maybe it's because I was brought up by parents who didn't necessarily speak to me about respecting others but modeled it for me through their own actions. They treated everyone equally, from what I remember, never looking down upon others because they were different from us. 

As I raise my daughters, I try my best to show them love and understanding in all situations. When they misbehave, talk back, or break the rules, I'll lovingly analyze the reasons behind their behavior. I'll be tolerant(宽容的)towards their differing opinions and become open and curious about their ideas. And I'll be mindful of how I treat and speak to others, showing equal respect to everyone. 

My expectation is that if I show my daughters unconditional love and acceptance, they'll learn to show the same love to others. I hope that they will not see difference as a threat, but as a way to add richness to their very existence. It's beautiful to live in a world filled with so many differences. 

So, as I write this, welcoming my second daughter to my family, I'm fully aware that change begins with how I act and what decisions I make. Every generation carries its own set of problems. All we have control over is how we respond to those problems. This is what I will teach my girls: how to control their own emotional world; how to hold onto love as well as their beliefs and values; how to remember that hate and anger are never the answer and that tolerance and love will always take them further in life.

Lu kaigang, a twenty-one year villager from rural Guangxi, China, known for his modeling  countryside videos on short-video platform Kuaishou has gained international attention from the world famous fashion houses. He has received invitations to walk at the some of the largest fashion weeks on the global stages. 

Lu has over 4 million followers on his Kuaishou account, where he posts videos under the name "Xiao Xianren". Lu rose to fame chasing his passion for modelling while working as a restaurant waiter and a factory worker in Nanning, the capital of Guangxi. "I have had a supermodel dream since I was ten, while I was still in a primary school. I saw a fashion show on TV when I feel it was so cool to do that on the catwalk, "said Lu. Since then, he practices the catwalk every day. 

 Without any professional training, he learned catwalk from fashion show video. He turned everywhere into his runway, from a narrow passage to a deserted factory. 

"From clothing designing and making to filming and posting, these were extremely time-consuming but barely received feedback on line in the beginning. But I still enjoyed the process, " said Lu. "The early dozens of videos I posted even didn't receive ‘likes', " Lu recalled. But I believed what I've done would be recognized by the world someday. " Lu insisted on posting his fashion works onto Kuaishou where he hoped to be seen by more people. 

 Many laughed at Lu's early works as they thought of him as a funny clown(小丑) wearing very strange costumes. Howerver, Lu's insistence, coupled with Kuaishou's powerful algorithms(演算法), enable Lu to be seen , which eventually helped him to enter mainstream fame.
