It was the beginning of another school year. I had agreed to teach all struggling students in need of critical intervention(介入). I knew what lay ahead — tough work hours overlaid with guilt, consumed with essays that needed feedback and lesson plans with best practice strategies. No wonder people always acknowledge my teaching career with, "I'm glad it's you and not me." Suddenly, my mind transported me to my first few years of teaching. "Peter Potter," I called from my name list, trying to control my laughter. "Laughlin McLaughlin?" Surely these were not real names. "Emotionally disabled... keeps them separated from the other kids...," the vice headmaster commanded. This was my first teaching assignment. Surely this year could never be as discouraging as those first few. In my new classroom, I looked into the face of Jason. At eleven, his mother was killed in an accident, leaving him with physical, academic, and certainly emotional scars. I looked at another student, Robert, standing at the door; my vice headmaster asked if I would take him, even though he was an eleventh grader in my tenth grade class. But then there were — and are — stories of success — of Dustin, in Graduate School for Electrical and Computer Engineering; of Michael, now a teacher in a city school; of Willie... I thought of the thousands of students whose lives have touched mine far more than I could have ever touched theirs. I broke from my daydream, a smile spreading across my face. Sadness, tears, challenges, fears — yes, teaching is filled with all of these — yet, it is also filled with laughter and smiles, hope, dreams, and rewards beyond measure. "I'm glad it's you and not me." Those words resounded in my mind once again.

阅读理解Think about Michael Jackson or Bill Gates. What is the secret of their perfect careers? Listen to your heart rather than your head The secret of a perfect career is: listen to your heart and not to your head. Your head can often fool you. Your heart shows you a more accurate picture, and guides you down the path of achieving your wishes. When you listen to your heart, then you are able to make decisions that you will be happy with. Assess yourself Assess your talent and your ability. Then assess the skills that you have gotten during your education and professional training. Think about what skills you will bring to your new career, and what interests you have. The important thing for you is to find out how you are going to use these resources in your career. Once you have done some soulsearching (反省) , you have already come upon the second most important secret to the perfect career search. If you are not sure how you are going to assess yourself, you can get professional help from a career adviser or other experts. Have a vision (远景) Many people mistakenly believe that they have to have some magic powers to have a vision. Completely wrong! If you have mastered the above two secrets, you are ready to apply the third secret to finding the perfect career. Having a vision gives you a sense of purpose, something to dream about. Whenever you move away from your chosen path, your vision will put you back on course. Even if your weaknesses are greater than your strengths, your vision will give you the power to change those weaknesses into strengths. Now that you are in the possession of these secrets, you can go ahead and never look back.

阅读理解The alarm sounds. Students swing their backpacks over their shoulders, board the school bus, make their way to their homeroom and the bell rings—school is back. But for more homes in America, school looks more like students waking up, making their way to the dining room or home office, setting up laptops and learning in the comfort of home. Virtual (虚拟的) schooling, described as "a public school that offers only instruction in which students and teachers are separated by time and/or place, and interaction occurs via computers and/or telecommunications (电信)technologies", has increased over the past decade. According to the National Education Policy Center, enrollments (注册人数) in virtual schools increased by 17,000 between the 2015-2016 school year and the 2016-2017 school year to 295,518. For Arizona Virtual Academy, a fulltime online public K12 school, they use K12 Inc. curriculums, K12 Inc. serves students in all 50 states and more than 100 countries with digital learning platforms and technology, providing online education." We are always improving our platforms and the technology that we use to make sure that we're keeping up with the changing trends, not only with education but also with technology," Dr. Kelly Van Sande said. Another piece of new technology they've rolled out is a new app where parents can find virtual schools available in their area. Carrie Faulkner chose to enroll two of her children in Arizona Virtual Academy. She says they've done schooling online in Chicago, in California, at restaurants and on her cousin's floor in Kansas. "It doesn't matter whether he (her son) is on the couch, in his bed or at the kitchen table, he can do schooling wherever he wants to," Faulkner said. "I wish they had it for me back when I was in school. That would have been awesome. "

阅读理解Stan Lee, cofounder of the Marvel Universe (漫威宇宙) and cocreator of many of its most popular superheroes, died at the age of 95. Lee was born Stanley Martin Lieber in New York in 1922. As a son of workingclass Jewish immigrants from Romania, times were hard and he lived with his family in a shabby singlebedroom apartment. After graduating from high school at 16, Lieber landed a job as an assistant at Timely Comics. By the early 1940s, he was a temporary editor for the company. It was at this time that he began using his pen name—Stan Lee. In 1947, two years after returning from serving for the U. S. Army, Lee married his wife, Joan. The two began their 70year marriage and had two children. In the late 1950s, DC Comics breathed new life into its classic superhero and experienced a significant success with its updated version of the Flash, and later with superteam the Justice League of America. To compete against DC Comics, Lee was given the task of creating their own group of super heroes. In 1961, Timely Comics changed its name into Marvel Comics after Atlas Comics, and that November saw the debut (首次亮相) of the Fantastic Four. Lee's later famous and lasting creations of comicbook superheroes included SpiderMan, the Hulk, Thor, Iron Man and the XMen. Over the course of his career, Lee was an icon of Marvel Comics. As a writer and editor and, at various points both the publisher and vice president of Marvel Comics, Lee not only introduced interesting characters to the industry but changed the way that comic books came together. He also created a cooperative workflow between writers and artists, which became known as the "Marvel Method". Lee received a National Medal of Arts in 2008 for his innovations that revolutionized American comic books.

阅读理解Choosing what you want to do with the rest of your life can be challenging, here are some suggestions on how to choose a college major that you will enjoy. Let your core classes help you choose a major If you are still in high school, take a look at each of your classes and identify which ones you enjoy most. If you're going back to college after starting your career, think back to your best high school classes (e.g. math, biology, history, etc.). This can help you identify your strengths and interests so you can narrow your list of possible university degree programs to a particular field of study. Prioritize (划分优先顺序) your career wants and needs First and foremost, a college major should be chosen based on your interests and career goals. However, it is not uncommon for students to select their majors based on the careers of their parents or siblings (兄弟姐妹). If following in their footsteps is not right for the student, then it will likely lead to an unfulfilling education and career. When choosing a major, it is important to identify what aspects of a career are most important to you (money, creative freedom, helping people, working outdoors, etc.). Making a list of your top priorities will shed plenty of light on which degree or major is best for you. Also, talk to your parents and siblings about the choices they made and whether they think those majors and careers would be a good fit for you. Additional tips for choosing majors Seeking outside advice, not just from family members, is always recommended when choosing a college major. Talk with career counselors, high school teachers, guidance counselors and students who currently enrolled in a major you are interested in. Speaking to professors at universities or to professionals in the field can also give you a good idea of what you might expect from a career. There are also tests you can take that give an insight into career matches, dominant personality characters and key interests. While a test should not dictate your choices, it can offer you a new perspective on yourself and open your eyes to majors and career prospects you didn't consider.

阅读理解When she was a little girl, Margarita Engle spent her summers in Cuba, where she says she fell in love with nature. Engle, 66, was born to a Cuban mother and an American father. Her annual visits to the Caribbean island from her home in California shaped her life and inspired her to become a poet and writer. The Poetry Foundation named her as Young People's Poet Laureate, a role Engle plans to use to encourage children and teenagers to write down their feelings. Magic happens when you put your emotions in writing, she said. Engle says she has always liked poetry. At age 6, she wrote her first poem about nature. After looking around while taking a walk one day in California, she wrote a rhymed poem about the shapes of hills. As a teen, she wrote sonnets (十四行诗) about nature and stories about people in Cuba. Some of her books explore the island, its people, markets and landmarks. Her new picture book, All the Way to Havana, features American cars from the 1940s and 1950s. Forest World, a new novel, introduces Edver, an 11-year-old who lives in Miami, Florida, with his mother and is shipped off to Cuba to see his birthplace and meet his Cuban family, to readers. When he arrives in Havana, the capital, he learns he has an older sister, Luza, who stays on the island with her father and grandfather. The two go on an adventure into a Cuban forest. The emotions of the characters are similar to what many children feel when they are separated from loved ones, Engle said. She hopes that people facing similar challenges can find support and comfort in poetry.
