Constantin Levaditi was born in Galati Romania in 1874. His family was poor and his father was a Greek immigrant who worked in the Galati port and his mother was Romanian. When he was only six years old, he had to start working in a shop as both of his parents fell ill. His job was to deliver orders from his uncle's shop.

After two years his parents died and he was taken into care by one of his relatives who worked as a nurse in a hospital. His relative noticed that he was very smart and sent him to school. After graduating from high school, he decided to study at the medical school in Bucharest where he studied under Professor Victor Babes.

Levaditi became a doctor in 1902 and then he specialized in researching tuberculosis (结核病)in Paris at the Louis Pasteur Institute and to Frankfurt , at the Experimental Therapy Institute. He also managed to contribute to the invention of the anti-polio vaccine (消除小儿麻痹症的疫苗) in 1913.

Levaditi returned to Romania in1919 as a researcher to teach at university but Romanian universities did not accept him as he criticized Romania's national health system and its political parties. He often said that it was not acceptable that the government did not care for its people and that there were not enough doctors and hospitals. Thus, he returned to France to continue his research in 1920. That same year he was invited to lead the Rockefeller Institute in New York but he refused.

In 1926, Levaditi became a member of the Romanian Academy. Later on, he was in charge of the bacteriology (细菌学) French school and he devoted his last years to research on antibiotics (抗生素)and other medicines.

I was a shy girl. I didn't even like to answer the telephone for fear I'd have to talk to somebody I didn't know. I enjoyed the loneliness of exploring nature. However, at school I had to spend all day in the company of others. My escape was reading. I spent a lot of time studying and was rewarded with good grades. My only failure was Spanish -I'd get all As on my written work and tests, but Ds and Fs on the spoken part.

Eventually I went to college. During my third year of college, I had enough of being shy and determined to change my outlook and behavior. One day while at school, I noticed an advertisement for positions on the local classical music radio station. I had grown up listening to classical music, and I could easily pronounce names such as Tchaikovsky, Albinoni, and Chopin.

I had absolutely no background in radio, and absolutely no hope of getting the job. The idea of talking to thousands of listeners in "radio land" terrified me. However, I luckily survived the interview. I was given brief descriptions of symphonies (交响乐) and a public service announcement to read, and a list of composers' names to pronounce. It wasn't hard for me. I left the recording session(录音时段) with a sense of relief and a sense of accomplishment. About two weeks later I actually landed the job. It was a challenging job, but I grew to enjoy it greatly. I began to feel comfortable talking to people.

Although I now spend many hours each week talking with people, I'm still basically a quiet person. Perhaps it is my soft voice and my quiet nature that helps draw people out as they respond to my questions as I interview them. My former shyness is a fortune, as I can relate to people who feel uncomfortable when they talk to newspaper reporters. I still enjoy moments of loneliness and the peace found in nature. But I'm also glad I decided to make a change in my life that has opened many doors and opportunities that I never knew existed.

Yellow is usually the color of happy, joyful emotions (情感). But according to a new study, not all people associate the sunshiny shade with good feelings.

To find out what factors might play a role, researchers tested a new hypothesis (假设): What if people' physical surroundings affect their feelings about certain colors? For example, if someone lived in cold and rainy Finland, would they feel differently about the color yellow from someone who lived near the Sahara Desert?

The researchers looked at color-emotion data from an ongoing international survey (调查) of 6,625 people in 55 countries. The survey asked participants to rate 12 colors on how closely they were associated with feelings including joy, pride, fear, and shame.

The researchers paid particular attention to the data for yellow, and analyzed how different factors — including hours of sunshine, hours of daylight, and the amount of rainfall — lined up with the emotions people reported for the color. The two best predictors of how people felt about yellow were the annual amount of rainfall, and how far they lived from the equator (赤道).

Overall, people were more likely to associate yellow with joy when they lived in rainier countries that lay farther from the equator, researchers reported in the Journal of Environmental Psychology. In Egypt, the likelihood of yellow being associated with joy was just 5. 7%, whereas in cold Finland it was 87. 7%. In the United States, with its mild climate and amber waves of grain, people's yellow-joy association levels were between 60% and 70%.

The researchers also checked whether associations changed with the season — whether, for example, people in a certain country liked yellow more in the winter than they did in the summer. They found that opinions about color remained fairly constant year-round — even when the weather changed, the data on yellow-joy associations were as good as gold.
