If you are given only 1 yuan, could you live in a city for one day? It seems this may be a little difficult. But students from Xi'an did it. On April 10, more than 60 students from a middle school took part in the One Yuan Metropolis Survival(城市生存). Students not only have to live, but they also have to deal with a lot of hard tasks in this charitable(慈善的) activity. It has happened in eight cities and is going to four others, including Beijing, in May. To make money, many students looked for part-time jobs and saw how hard life was. Zhang Qiyue, 14, asked more than 10 restaurants for a job and finally got one chance. "We were upset when they said no. But gradually, we got used to it," he said. After being a waiter for an hour, he got 25 yuan. Some made use of their talents by singing and dancing in parks or shopping malls. Many people who walked by took notice and helped them. Zhao Jiacheng, 14, drew pictures and made paper crafts (手工). "This showed it's important to learn a special skill," he said. Living was hard, but finishing the tasks wasn't any easier. They went to different places to finish tasks in a short time. The most amazing one was when they had to exchange things worth thousands of yuan with only a piece of paper in half an hour. "We learned how to persuade others. From a balloon to a cake to a bottle of yogurt … after almost 20 tries, we got an expensive necklace," he said. They will give all of the money they made to poor schools in Tibet.

Scientists in Britain and the United States have made a new kind of enzyme(酵素) that eats plastics (塑料). With its help, plastics can be turned into smaller parts and go away quickly. Scientists believe that, in the future, it could solve the problem of plastic pollution. The enzyme is able to break down PET, a form of plastic. PET was first made in the 1940s and is now widely used to make plastic bottles. It can remain in the environment for many years and pollute large areas of land and water. So it has always been a headache to deal with the waste from PET and other plastics. The researchers made the discovery (发现) while examining the structure of a natural enzyme in Japan. They found that the natural enzyme was helping to break down PET plastics. So, they decided to make small changes to the enzyme by adding some amino acids (氨基酸). It made the natural enzyme's plastic-eating abilities work faster and better. John McGeehan, one of the lead researchers, said, "We've made an improved enzyme. It's better than the natural one. And we are trying to make more improvements to it." He went on, "The enzyme is not harmful to humans or animals, and it is friendly to the environment. So we are considering putting it into wider use." The team is now trying to make the enzyme break down PET in large quantities (大量地). "We'll see that the plastic pollution may be stopped with this technology. However, there is still a long way to go," John McGeehan added.

Breakfast cereals(谷类早餐食物) are popular in many countries. In the USA, they are served in nine out of ten homes. They are made from grains(谷物)such as corn, wheat and rice. In the beginning, cereals were healthy food. In the late 1800s, some doctors in the USA made them in hospitals and gave them to their patients. However, this soon changed, and from the 19305, some companies began to add sugar to their cereals and sell them as children's food. They made a lot of money this way, but they weren't healthy food anymore. These days some children s cereals are 50% sugar This is how cereal in different shapes, like stars and balls is made First, the grain is taken to the factory, where it is cleaned and checked. Then it is prepared for cooking. It is made into flour(粉) and mixed with other ingredients(原料) When it is soft, it is put into special machines which make it into shapes like stars, circles or even letters. The shapes are baked(烘烤) in an oven to dry them. Then they are "puffed "in another machine to make them light and full of air.
