Mr. Chips is a lovely old man. He always has a smile on his face. He always says a kind word to everyone. Mr. Chips loves his garden, where he grows flowers and vegetables. Everyone likes Mr. Chips.

Everything is fine, but one day he gets, a television. Mr. Chips wants to buy a television because he has nothing to do in the evenings.

Mr. Chips thinks television is excellent. He loves to watch sports and films. But soon Mr. Chips begins to get unhappy. He can only watch one channel(频道)at a time. He is missing all the other good shows on the other channels, So he tries to record(刻录) the shows he is missing.

Some days later, Mr. Chips gate unhappy again. When he goes into the kitchen to make food, he can't watch television. So he moves his kitchen into his living room! He moves in his cooker and fridge. He also moves his bed in. He sends all day and most of the night watching television.

He doesn't have time to grow flowers and vegetables, so he sells his garden. He spends the money on more televisions. Now he has lots of televisions in his room. He has a different show on each television. __________________ It is very noisy. Soon his room is full of televisions. He doesn't go out anymore. He never sees his friends and talks to anyone. The only thing he does is watching television. Mr. Chips becomes a television addict (上瘾者)!

Too tired to learn? Some people think schools shouldn't start too early. Lots of doctors think so. That's why in some places people are working for later start times. It's good news for adolescents who like to snooze(打盹)!

High schools in Seattle start at 8: 45 a.m. Or even later! Another example is California. The state sets new rules for the schools. High schools can't start before 8:30 a.m. Middle schools can't start before 8: 00 a.m. Why? Some doctors say that students get their best sleep between 11:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m.

lf adolescents get up at 5: 00 a.m., they miss out on some good Z's! Not getting enough sleep can bring health problems. The students may have problems learning, too. It's hard to learn when they are sleepy in class.

But some people think starting schools later isn't so smart. How much students sleep is important. When they sleep is also important. There's no way to be sure that students get more sleep. The rules can't make them go to bed! Schools start later and finish later, too. That leaves students with little free time, For what? Sports, jobs, and homework. And of course...fun ! Also, it could be hard to have enough(足够的) buses and drivers. That's why so many high schools start very early.

Tim is a popular detective (侦探)in the city. On Sunday morning, he got a phone call. It was from David, the police officer.

"Tim, I need your help. A famous criminal is in our city now. He dresses up as a salesman. We found three salesmen might be the criminal."

"I will talk to them" Tim answered.

Tim went to the first shop and talked to the salesman, John.

"Do you know Bruce?" Tim asked.

"Yes, he comes to the shop every day to buy milk for the school dining hall," John answered.

Then, Tim came to the next shop. He saw the second salesman, Rick, cleaning the floor.

"Do you know Bruce?" Tim asked.

The last salesman was Carl. He was selling vegetables.

"Does Bruce buy vegetables from you?" Tim asked.

"Yes! He buys vegetables every day. He needs a lot to cook for the workers," Carl said.

"I think Rick is the person you want," Tim said to David.

How did Tim know? Because Rick said Bruce bought salt and sugar every day. It's not a must for a person to buy them every day.

Mr. and Mrs. Jones don't often go out in the evening. But last Saturday, Mrs. Jones said to her husband, "There's a good movie at the1tonight. Can2go and watch it?" Mr. Jones was very happy about it,3they went. Both of them4the movie.
