    Do you want to be a volunteer? 1this past winter vacation, I attended an SSP volunteer trip to Hua Xin, Thailand （泰国华欣）. It was a beautiful seaside town. At the elephant base, my fellow volunteers and I saw many old and sick Asian elephants. Our task was 2them.

    3we arrived at the base, we had learned what Asian elephants eat—fruits, sticky rice（糯米）, the skin of corn （玉米） and the bark （树皮） of banana trees. After we had prepared these special foods for the elephants, we tried to feed them. We stood still （站着不动）outside the elephant cage. The elephants came over to get food using their trunks（象鼻）. 4, I felt very nervous. Would the elephants hurt me? But it turned out that the elephants were very docile （温顺的）. They took food from my hand gently（温柔地）. How lovely they were! One of the elephants took food only from me. I guess it probably liked me 5than others.

    After lunch, it was 6for the elephants to take a bath. Three volunteers needed to work 7to bathe an elephant. One stood in the middle to hold the hose （水龙带）, and the other two brushed the two sides of the animal. It 8that the elephants enjoyed their baths very much.

    We also helped to clean the 9living areas. Through this volunteer trip, I found that Asian elephants were very lovely. I hope 10of us can help to protect them and learn to live in harmony with nature.

    We are bats! Many of you are now afraid of us, aren't you? There has been a serious corona virus （冠状病毒） outbreak （爆发） in China. Many people say the virus comes from us bats. They believe we are the killers! Grrr! We are angry about this! We bats have lived on Earth for 50 million years. How long have you humans been here? We have developed super immunity （免疫力）. In other words, we can live with many viruses. How about you? Let us tell you: Some of these viruses can easily kill you!

    Yes, we are very dangerous. We know this, so we try to stay away from you. We look ugly. That's because we want you to hate us. We come out only at night—when most of you are sleeping.

    However, some of you have perhaps forgotten how dangerous we are. You have killed our brothers and sisters and eaten their meat. The viruses in the bat meat attacked these people. How foolish they were!

    I hope you will learn a lesson from the corona virus outbreak. Don't eat or touch wild animals! Please!

    THE YEAR OF 2020 marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Italy （中意建交五十周年）. To celebrate the China﹣Italy friendship, 2020 was set to be the China﹣Italy Year of Culture and Tourism.

    The opening ceremony （开幕式） of the event was held in Rome on January 21. During the year﹣long event, nearly one hundred cultural and tourism activities will be held in both countries.

    Some big Chinese museums, such as the Palace Museum and the National Museum, are working on swapping exhibitions （互换展览） with Italian museums. Chinese artworks will also be displayed at the 17th International Architecture Exhibition （国际建筑双年展） in Venice in the upcoming months.

Italy is a popular tourist destination among Chinese tourists. The country attracts people with its rich history of art and culture. Today, a large number of Italian tourists travel to China for its beautiful landscapes and cultural heritage （文化遗产）.

    We all know Google is one of the largest IT companies in the world. But do you know what it is like to work at Google? Is life there stressful?

    The answer is, "Not at all!" In fact, it's fun to work at Google. The American company has the best working environment in its home country.

    The working environment at Google is relaxing. The company encourages its staff to do whatever they want to do. Google employees can design their own desks. They can write their ideas on the wall. When they feel tired, they can take a nap on the sofas. Animal lovers can even bring their pets to work!

    To its employees, Google is like a community. In addition to offices and meeting rooms, there are game rooms, hair salons （美发厅） and gyms. After work, Google employees can go for a swim in the swimming pool or enjoy a massage.

    And there is an interesting rule at Google: No staff member should be 100 feet （about 30 meters） away from food. Cafés, snack bars and restaurants are everywhere. All food is free. In the main cafeteria, there are thousands of different dishes. One Google manager says, "We care about our employees' health. We encourage them to eat healthily. And our research shows that if people have enough food, they will make better decisions."

    Google also encourages its staff to learn new things. It offers many interesting courses to its employees. The employees can learn sign language （手语）, cooking and drawing—all for free.

    Google believes one should love his or her workplace in order to work well. That's why it is trying hard to create the best working environment in the world.

    A long time ago, there was a king. To expand the boundaries （边界） of his country, he led his people to war and ordered them to fight for him. People suffered a lot.

    One day, the king asked Mencius （孟子）, "I think I have done my best for my people. I gave them food when they were hungry. I moved them to a safe place when there was a disaster. But why doesn't the population of my country grow? The kings of other states don't do their job as well as I do. But why isn't their population decreasing?"

    Mencius answered, "Your Majesty （陛下）,when a fight is over, usually the losers will flee（逃离）. The first man runs a hundred steps and the second runs fifty steps. Do you think the second man should laugh at the first man and call him a coward （懦夫）?"

    "Of course not. Both of them are almost the same," the king answered.

    "Since you understand this, Your Majesty, how can you expect that you should have more people?" Mencius said.

    Although the king provided food for his people, his people still suffered a lot because of the wars he started. So he was no better than the other kings.

    Each person has his or her own weaknesses. We should know our own shortcomings and not laugh at others.

The  news makes us very surprised.
