I went to my first concert last night.

The band I went to see was I-Prevail. But of course when you go to a concert, you can't enjoy the band before you hear the openers. That was a bit of a shock to me considering that there were three openers before I-Prevail played anything. I honestly had never heard of any of the opening bands, but they weren't bad at all.

Three hours passed and finally it was time for the band I came to see. But they didn't sing when they got on stage(舞台). They first gave a speech to thank us for coming to watch their concert.

After the speech, the band finally began to play. Though that was my first concert, I had always talked to people who went to concerts a lot. They always seemed to mention that the group or singers doesn't sound the same as they do on recordings. I-Prevail did not fall into this stereotype(陈规). The band sounded exactly like they do on their albums. That just shows this band was known for how good they are but not just how good they can make themselves sound on an album.

The concert was amazing and the night was great, but I honestly feel that a concert is 10 times better if you go with people you know and who just want to have a good time. The people I attended the concert with were amazing people and just had such a love for music, which made everything so much better. A concert is one thing, but having friends that enjoy music as much as you do is something you can't miss. Last night was so much better just because I attended my first concert with some great friends.

  1. (1) How did the writer feel knowing there were three openers?
A . He found it hard to believe. B . He considered it normal. C . He became very angry. D . He was happy about it.
  2. (2) What did the writer think of the band's performance?
    A . It was boring. B . It was old-fashioned. C . It was wonderful. D . It was simple.
  3. (3) Why did the writer say "the night was great"?
A . He made some new friends that night. B . He could watch the performance clearly. C . He learned about the importance of friends. D . He went with friends who also love music.
  4. (4) Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
A . My Most Valuable Experience. B . My First Concert Experience. C . My Favorite Music Band. D . My Love for Music.

Sitting among a sea of cars, have you ever dreamed about your car taking off and flying over the road? Many of us spend an hour or so stuck in traffic every week. The main problem is that we are not expanding (扩展)our transportation systems fast enough to meet ever increasing demands (需求). One solution is to create a new type of transportation that doesn't rely on roads.

In the last century, planes and cars changed the way we lived. Cars, which can be afforded by the general population, have allowed us to move farther. Planes have also cut travel time to faraway destinations(目的地).At the beginning of a new century, we may see the realization of a century-old dream一the mix of cars and planes or flying cars.

You might have heard news about flying cars before. The technology to make them safe and easy to fly may finally be here. With progress in lightweight material, computer models and no-man control, the dream is very close to becoming real.

Car maker Moller went public with the Skycar M400 in 2011. It is the first car that can take off and land straightly. The four-seat Skycar is powered by eight engines(引擎). The cost of a car is about $1 million at first, but when it begins to be produced in large amounts, that price could come down to as low as $60,000.

The latest flying car City Hawk is predicted to be tested between 2021 and 2022.It is similar to the Skycar except for its power source. The important difference lies in the power fans that seem much quieter on the road. The City Hawk is about as large as a middle-sized car. It could be used as an air taxi for news collection and traffic control.

The popularity of flying cars could be very exciting or very scary, depending on how you look at it. If proper rules are put in place, they could be the answer to our ever-heavier traffic pressure.

  1. (1) According to Paragraph 1, the new type of transportation should be used to ________________.
A . share the traffic pressure B . improve the speed of cars C . increase people's demands D . replace the present transportation system

A . explain how flying cars work B . show flying cars are coming to us C . encourage people to buy flying cars D . remind people the importance of flying cars

A . The Skycar M400 has fewer seats. B . The Skycar M400 is more expensive. C . The CityHawk is much smaller. D . The CityHawk produces less noise.
  4. (4) We can infer that the writer ________________ about the future of flying cars.

Members of a native community in the arctic areas of Sweden say their reindeer (驯鹿) are facing possible starvation(饥饿)from unusual weather related to climate change. The Sami indigenous community takes care of about 8,000 reindeer throughout the year. The animals are moved between traditional feeding areas in high mountains near Norway in the summer and forests farther east in the winter.

Community member Niila Inga is worried about his reindeer. He said climate change has affected the area's weather activity and created food shortages. "If we don't find better areas for them where they can graze and find food, then the reindeer will starve to death, "Inga said. He demonstrated the problem by reaching down into the snow and pulling up a hard piece of ice close to the soil.

The area received unusual snowfall early in the fall, followed by rain that froze (结冰). Inga said this keeps the plants that reindeer eat under a thick cover of ice. Some of the hungry reindeer have now moved away from their traditional migration (迁徙) areas in search of food.

Community members say half the reindeer moved towards the east as planned. But the rest headed back to the mountains, where they face the risk of attacks by other animals or being caught in an avalanche. Older members of the Sami community say that in the past, they only encountered bad winters about once every ten years. But now, Inga says "extreme and strange weathers are getting more and more normal," happening several times a year.

Snowfall is normal for the area. But as temperatures increase, rain can also fall, creating a "rain-on-snow" effect. When this happens, food stays underneath the ice where the reindeer cannot reach it. This causes the animals to grow weaker and struggle to make it through the winter. Weather changes have hit the Sami community hard.

SannaVannar is president of the Swedish Sami Youth organization. The group made an action to force the European Union (EU) to reduce human-caused greenhouse gases.

"We've said we don't want money because we can't buy better weather with money,"Vannar said. "We've said we need the EU to take action and they need to do it now."

  1. (1) What problem are the reindeer facing now?
A . Hot weather. B . Food shortage. C . The risk of migration. D . The loss of their home.
  2. (2) What does the underlined word "graze" in Paragraph 2 mean?
    A . Eat grass. B . Give birth. C . Have a sleep. D . Move around.
  3. (3) Why did some reindeer move towards the east?
A . To escape being attacked by other animals. B . To find a warmer place for winter. C . To escape from natural risks. D . To search for food.
  4. (4) What's the purpose of the Swedish Sami Youth by making an action?
A . To get some money. B . To join the European Union. C . To improve weather conditions. D . To protect the soil of the arctic areas.

Ways to learn from mistakes
