With autumn on the horizon, the season’s first Oscar competitors are here. Already, the Hollywood Reporter has predicted that the often-snubbed(冷落的) Leonardo DiCaprio could win. Although before we get swept up in predictions, it’s nice to remember that little gold men are not the reason we love the movies. They shouldn’t be the primary reason for acting in them either.
Bill Murray knows this first hand. Murray was positioned to win his first-ever Oscar Academy Award for 2004’s “Lost in Translation”, but he lost it to Sean Penn. Years later, Murray explained how he took the defeat in stride(从容应对), and his words should act as a blueprint for anyone who has failed:
“I went through it once before and it’s nice to get nominated and win some prizes. You get to go to dinners and tell little stories and so forth. Then you get to get dressed up. And then you get to be on TV, which is sweet. And you can either win or lose. Well you’re not supposed to say ‘lose’ when you talk about the Oscar. You are supposed to say ‘not chosen’. But I later realized that I had gotten a little caught up in the possibility of winning. So, shame on myself for getting caught in it. But I won a lot of the prizes for Lost in Translation. So I thought it didn’t seem unnatural to expect that I would be rewarded just one more time. So when it didn’t happen, I thought, ‘Well, that’s kind of funny.’ But to get prizes is not why you work.”
Murray isn’t alone in those feelings. No mention of actors without Oscars would be complete without recognition of Leonardo DiCaprio, who said, “I don’t think I ever expected anything like an Oscar ever, to tell you the truth. That is not my motivation when I do these roles. I really am motivated by being able to work with great people and create a body of work that I can look back and be proud of.”
Perhaps neither Murray nor DiCaprio will ever be introduced as an Academy Award-winning actor, but winning an Oscar for acting shouldn’t be the point. Here are some other amazing actors who never won an Oscar, even if you think they did: Julianne Moore, Brad Pitt, Johnny Depp, Tom Cruise, Harrison Ford, Will Smith. And they have proved that countless times before.
25. We can learn about Bill Murray from the passage that_________.

B. he never expected himself to win the Oscar.
C. he had already won many other awards before he failed in Oscar.

26. Leonard DiCaprio is motivated to act different roles because _________
A. he wants to win the Oscar. B. he can cooperate with great people.
B. he wants others to take pride in him.
D. he is not the only actor who hasn’t won the Oscar.
27. The underlined word “that” in the last paragraph refers to “_________”.
A. Neither Murray nor DiCaprio will won an Oscar.
B. Winning an Oscar for acting shouldn’t be the point.
C. Some amazing actors have never won an Oscar.
D. You think that some actors should have won an Oscar.
28. What is the writer’s attitude to Leonardo’s idea on winning an Oscar?
A. Approving. B. Critical C. Indifferent. D. Neutral.
“I Went Skydiving at 84!”
As a young girl growing up in the 1930s, I always wanted to fly a plane, but back then it was almost unheard of for a woman to do that. I got a taste of that dream in 2011, when my husband arranged for me to ride in a hot air balloon for my birthday. But the experience turned out to be very dull. Around that time, I told my husband that I wanted to skydive. So when our retirement community(社区)announced that they were having an essay competition and the topic was an experience of a lifetime that you wanted to have, I decided to write about my dream.
In the essay, I wrote about my desire to skydive, stating George Brush Sr. did it at age 80. Why not me? I was just 84 and in pretty good health. A year went by and I heard nothing. But then at a community party in late April 2009, they announced that I was one of the winners. I just couldn’t believe it. Inspired by this, I decided to realize my dream, even though some of my family members and my doctor were against it.
On June 11, 2009, nearly 40 of my family and friends gathered in the area close to where I would land while I headed up in the airplane. My instructor, Jay, guided me through the experience. The plane was the noisiest one I had ever been in, but I wasn’t frightened—I was really just looking forward to the experience. When we reached 13,000 feet, Jay instructed me to throw myself out of the plane. When we first hit the air, the wind was so strong that I could hardly breathe. For a second I thought, “What have I gotten myself into?” But then everything got calmer. We were in a free fall for about a minute before Jay opened the parachute(降落伞), then we just floated downward for about five minutes. Being up in the clouds and looking at the view below was unlike anything I have ever felt—much better than the hot air balloon. I was just enjoying it.
Skydiving was really one of the greatest experiences of my life. I hope other people will look at me and realize that you don’t stop living just because you are 84 years old. If there’s something you want to experience, look into it. If it’s something that is possible, make it happen.

I clearly remember the day when my little brother was born: January 1,1994. One of my favorite family photos shows me lying with my mother in the hospital bed, happy but unaware of the small, sleeping baby in the background.
I stayed with my grandparents for the weekend of my brother’s birth, excited about my new brother but not yet aware of what having a little brother would mean. I didn’t truly realize what was going on until we were in the hospital room at Duke University—coincidentally ,the same room in which I had been born two years earlier.
When I looked at my brother for the first time, I felt a mixture of fear and interest. Little did I know that small, pink creature would grow up to be one of my favorite people in the world.
In reality, though I am two years older than my brother, I am more often than not the real baby in the family. I am very lacking when it comes to common sense. Instructions constantly confuse me and I frequently find myself totally puzzled by things like knowing how to start the washing machine or manage the storage settings on my iPhone.
That’s where Gibson comes in. The poor kid has had to guide me through more tasks than I would care to admit, but he never complains. Though I should probably be told to figure it out myself, he always comes through.
I’m envious of his ability to readily answer the ever-present, “What do you want to do with your life?” question at family gatherings. “Be a doctor,” he says—a solid answer, completely opposite to my shaky one, “Well, I’m an English major, so…”
My brother truly is my best friend. No one understands me better, and there isn’t anyone else I would want to be stuck with in our family. I may not have a clear idea of where I’m headed, but he is stuck with me.

You get anxious if there’s no wi-fi in the hotel or mobile phone signal up the mountain. You feel upset if your phone is getting low on power, and you secretly worry things will go wrong at work if you’re not there. All these can be called “always on” stress caused by smart phone addiction.
For some people, smart phones have liberated them from the nine-to-five work. Flexible working has given them more autonomy(自主权) in their working lives and enabled them to spend more time with their friends and families. For many others though, smart phones have become tyrants (暴君) in their pockets, never allowing them to turn them off, relax and recharge their batteries.
Pittsburgh-based developer Kevin Holesh was worried about how much he was ignoring his family and friends in favour of his iPhone. So he developed an app — Moment — to monitor his usage. The app enables users to see how much time
They’re spending on the device and set up warnings if the usage limits are breached (突破). “Moment’s goal is to promote balance in your life,” his website explains. “Some time on your phone, some time off it enjoying your loving family and friends around you.”
Dr Christine Grant, an occupational psychologist at Coventry University, said, “The effects of this ‘always on’ culture are that your mind is never resting, and you’re not giving your body time to recover, so you’re always stressed. And the more tired and stressed we get, the more mistakes we make. Physical and mental health can suffer.”
And as the number of connected smart phones is increasing, so is the amount of data. This is leading to a sort of decision paralysis (瘫痪) and is creating more stress in the workplace because people have to receive a broader range of data and communications which are often difficult to manage. “It actually makes it more difficult to make decisions and many do less because they’re controlled by it all and feel they can never escape the office,” said Dr Christine Grant.
32. What’s the first paragraph mainly about?
A. The popularity of smart phones. B. The progress of modern technology.
C. The signs of “always on” stress. D. The cause of smart phone addiction.
33. Kevin Holesh developed Moment to __________.
A. research how people use their mobile phones
B. help people control their use of mobile phones
C. make people better use mobile phones
D. increase the fun of using mobile phones
34. What’s Dr Christine Grant’s attitude towards “always on” culture?
A. Confused. B. Positive. C. Doubtful. D. Critical.
35. According to the last paragraph, a greater amount of data means __________.
A. we will become less productive B. we can make a decision more quickly
C. we will be equipped with more knowledge D. we can work more effectively

Time management is one of the most important study skills that a student needs to know. When you’re a student, you have all kinds of work you need to do every day. 16 So it is necessary to learn how to make the best use of your time. Here are two tips to help you mange your time in college.
Keep a detailed calendar:
It’s almost impossible to remember everything you need to do in your head. 17 A detailed calendar is the best method. As soon as you realize a deadline, record it in the calendar, and be sure to look at coming dates in the calendar often. Be sure to record each work as well. 18
19
It’s not a good idea to pick up your books and start working until you’ve finished—because you may not have enough time to finish all your tasks. Find out how much time you have for each task, and plan this out in you calendar. Try to give yourself some extra time for each task in case one takes longer than you expected. 20 The more you learn to manage your time, the easier it will become. Good luck, students!
A. Plan out your time carefully.
B. Form a habit to manage your time.
C. Time management is a learned skill.
D. It is the key to managing your time better.
E. You never feel like there is enough time to finish it all.
F. With it, you will know how much time you have for each task.
G. You need a system to record all the things you have to do.
When you are traveling, it’s vital to know about the customs and etiquette(礼仪,礼节)of the global village. What we consider polite behavior at home isn’t always accepted outside our borders.
● Etiquette of Gift Giving
Gift giving should be a happy, positive experience. When selecting a present for someone in Netherlands, don’t purchase fancy kitchen knives or scissors. Giving sharp, pointy objects as gifts is considered unlucky. Be careful when presenting flowers to a friend or a business partner in Russia. Yellow blooms suggest cheat or a relationship break up. Traditionally, red carnations are placed on the tombs of the dead. Writing cards or notes while visiting South Korea, be mindful of your pen’s ink color. Writing a person’s name in red ink traditionally suggests that the person has passed away—an important point to remember when giving a birthday card.
● Eating Customs
Being early or on time is viewed as being rude, too eager or even greedy in Venezuela. If you are invited to someone’s home for a meal, it’s recommended that you arrive 10 minutes later than the requested time. When having a meal in Egypt, don’t use the salt shaker (盐瓶). It’s insulting to your host to spread salt on your food, which means that you find the meal terrible. Japan is a very polite nation, and their fondness for etiquette extends to the use of chopsticks. According to Japanese custom, if you’re in the middle of eating, use the opposite end of your chopsticks to secure food from a shared plate. When doing business in Turkey, it’s the custom for your host to pay for your meal. Requests to split the bill won’t be accepted. If you would like to pay your fair share, Turks recommend inviting your host to a follow-up meal.
21. Which of the following is tree according to the passage?
A. You can use blue ink to write notes to your friend from South Korea.
B. Giving a fancy kitchen knife to a friend from Russia is a good choice.
C. Dining with Japanese, one can use either end of the chopsticks to get food from shared
plates.
D. Invited to a meal, one should arrive earlier to show respect for the host.
22. What does the underlined word “insulting” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Respectful. B. Offensive C. Indifferent. D. Challenging.
23. where is this passage probably from?
A. A news report. B. A culture column. C. A travel essay. D. A food magazine.
When I came round in hospital I didn’t know where I was and my mind went ________.

Detailed Guidance on Analytical Features
The definition of an analytical feature
Hard news is the kind of fast-paced news that usually appears in newspapers, magazines and some other mediums. Because each story in only relevant for a short time, writing must be concise and without excessive detail..Like a hard news story, an analytical feature also appears in newspapers; magazines or on the Web. However, an analytical feature covers a topic in some depth. It examines important issues or events in details, and provides more interpretation and background information for readers than hard news. Writing an analytical feature means looking for patterns, motives and outcomes that explain the event issue or problem.
An analytical feature should be based on an investigation of documents in the public domain-archives, libraries, scholarship, or local offices-and an interview with people with knowledge related to the topic.
Step-by-step guide to feature writing
1. Select a topic
2. Make a list of preliminary questions to establish what needs to be known about the topic. Ffere are some of the basic questions that a feature addresses.
●What is the problem?
●What institutions and people are involved?
●What is the standpoint?
●What causes the problem?
●What are the possible consequences?
3. List your sources--people: institutions, documents, books, articles that are likely to provide information and answers to your questions.
4. Refine your questions decide what you are going to look for in the written documents and what you are going to ask your potential sources.
5. Arrange your appointments, interviews or are, archival searches in a logical order, following the plan for your basic questions.
6. Conduct interviews Ly what information you are trying to get from each source.
7. Write and outline that sets up the structure of the feature.
8. Go back to your notes, organize information, compare and contrast data, analyze material, identify missing information, expand the list of sources, and conduct new interviews.
9. Write the feature
Analytical feature structure
THE INTRO: The most important function of the introduction is to make the readers want to read on.
THE BODY OF THE FEATURE: The content of the feature will vary depending on the subject matter, style of publication, supposed interests of the readers and intentions of the journals. The following points are what you should include in the body of your feature.
●Facts—include the mat appropriate points throughout the text rather than in chunks,
●Quotes-can bring writing to life, inject authority and powerful expression into the piece.
Think carefully which bits of your research to quote and which bits to translate into your own words, as the simple facts of a story do not normally need to be told through direct quotes.
●Description—Let the readers see what you are seeing, show rather than tell. Analysis-can be provided by experts who have conducted relevant research, but it may also be provided by ordinary people with direct knowledge and involvement. Your own analysis of the topic should be based on extensive research and supported by evidence.THL ENDING: Aim to provide a rounded ending of the text either in the form of a summary, a quote or a return to the scene of the introduction.

Picture the scene: You come home after work feeling too exhausted to cook –only to find a delicious meal worthy of a Michelin-starred restaurant waiting for you. It sounds like a fantasy, but it could be about to come true thanks to a robot chef developed by British scientists.
Those scientists have come up with a set of robotic arms so smart that they are capable of cooking meals all by themselves. The device will be sold from as early as 2017 as part of a purpose-built high-tech kitchen.
Scientists at Moley Robotics spent almost 18 years developing the hands. According to its creators, the arms can chop, stir, whisk and baste well enough to recreate almost anything you would care to eat, whether it is a simple home-cooked supper, or a complicated creation designed by a world-class chef. The hands move a little slowly, hovering strangely above the work surface whenever they are not busy, but they imitate human movements closely enough that they can do things such as wiping a spoon on the edge of a pan to prevent drips.
Mr. Oleynik, who is leading the project, said, “All the things which are possible with the hand are possible here. There is no limitation. A lot of people want to go to Michelin-starred restaurants, but they are quite expensive and may be quite far from the home. This is an opportunity for people to enjoy very good food, and for a reasonable price. ”
The only cuisine that is off the robot’s menu at the moment is sushi, which requires extremely steady pressure and nimble fingers to make, but the team plan to conquer that as well by the time it goes on sale.
