The King's School, Canterbury is an independent, coeducational secondary school. There are currently 791 pupils on the school roll (名单). The school has a long and distinguished history, and it is also one of the oldest charities in the country, providing scholarships to pupils and organizing a Charity of the Term.

The curriculum (课程) at King's is based on strong academic roots. It emphasizes and relies upon what is best in traditional independent school education: scholarly excellence supported by a caring and tutorial system, and a wide-ranging curricular programme. However, it is continually adapting and reacting to the changing demands of modern education: new subjects are added, new teaching techniques are adopted, and there is an increasing awareness of the need to provide programmes of study that match individual needs and skills.

The curriculum is divided into three units: the Lower School (Year 9), an introductory year; the Middle School (Years 10 and 11), working to GCSEs; and the Sixth Form (Years 12 and 13), taking AS and A levels.

Full details can be found in: Shell Guide and Handbook; Middle School Academic Guide 2009—2011; Middle School Academic Guide 2010—2012; Sixth Form Guide 2009—2011 and Sixth Form Guide 2010—2012.

Formal and structured educational support, for those who need it, is available at all levels. The well-stocked library is open 7 days and 6 evenings per week. ICT facilities (including the Internet) are available for all and the whole school (studies within the houses as well as classrooms) is extensively networked.

Pupils are offered extensive career advice throughout their time at King's. Almost all go to university, either immediately or following a gap year. The most popular university destinations are Cambridge, Bristol, Nottingham, Durham, Leeds, Oxford, Edinburgh, Manchester, and University College, London.

One answer to the question of land shortage was suggested by an organization some years ago. A city was to be built at sea, housing 30,000 people.

The suggestion was to shape the city like a harbor. The outer wall of the harbor would stand on steel columns resting on the sea bed. Naturally this could only be where the water was fairly shallow. The people would like to live in flats in the fifty-metre high outer wall. The flats would be all face inwards, and would be made of concrete and glass. The glass would be specially made and colored to control the heat and strong light from the sun. The planners called this man-made harbor would be calm. On it would be floating islands carrying more building: a hospital, two theaters, museum, an art exhibition hall and a church. On one of the islands would be a special factory to take the salt out of sea water and turn it into fresh water.

People living in the city could move around on small boats driven by electricity, so there would be no air pollution from the burning of gas. There would be platforms outside the man wall for ships bringing supplies. People could also travel to the mainland by motorboat or water plane.

As a little childI was always plump (胖的)In college I started blowing up. It got out of control when I went to law school.

I’d made a decision a thousand timesI’m going to lose weight now. But what motivated (激发)me to get serious about it was turning 30. I weighed 414 pounds. I was always tired. Some of my family members have suffered from heart disease, and I was frightened. I also wanted to look better. So after my birthday, I walked into the office of a weight loss doctor.

She was very understanding. Her focus was on balanced meals and she wanted me to exercise.

Walking was all I could do at first. I started by walking a few blocks and gradually increased the distance, until one weekendI heard myself saying“Wowthis seems pretty easy.” So I started to run.

I was losing nine or ten pounds a monthand I had more energy. I started to think about the New York City Marathon. For yearsI watched the runners and thought“This looks like funbut I could never do that.” But now I realized that maybe I could. I joined the New York Road Runners. I ran a 10kmthen a half marathon. I still wasn’t confident I could run a full 26 miles. But I told myself I was going to do itno matter what.

By my 33rd birthdayI was down to 180 pounds. I started formally training for the marathon. And on the morning of November 1I stood on the Verrazano Bridge in Staten Island with more than 40,000 other runnerswaiting for the event to start.

It was unbelievable to have the audience cheering me onhanding me cups of water. And I crossed the finish line. My friends sprayed (……喷射) me with beeras if I’d won the Super Bowl. And at that momentI knewIf I set my mind to somethingnothing is impossible.

Number sense is not the ability to count. It is the ability to recognize a    14    in number. Human beings are born with this ability.  15  , experiments show that many animals are, too. For example, many birds have good number sense. If a nest has four eggs and you remove one, the bird will not   16  . However, if you remove two, the bird  17  leaves. This means that the bird knows the   18   between two and three.

Another interesting experiment showed a bird's  19  number sense. A man was trying to take a photo of a crow(乌鸦)that had a nest in a tower, but the crow always left when she saw him coming. The bird did not  20  until the man left the tower. The man had an  21  . He took another man with him to the tower. One man left and the other stayed, but they did not  22   the bird. The crow stayed away until the second man left, too. The experiment was   23  with three men and then with four men. But the crow did not return to the nest until all the men were  24  . It was not until five men went into the tower and only four left that they were  25  able to fool the crow.

How good is a human's number sense? It's not very good. For example, babies about fourteen months old almost always notice if something is taken away from a   26   group. But when the number goes beyond three or four, the children are  27   fooled.

It seems that number sense is something we have in common with many animals in this world, and that our human  28  is not much better than a crow's.

The best way to help your children do well in school is to show them that you care about their education and lives. Here’s some helpful advice.

You are your children’s first and most important teacher.

You know your children better than anyone else, and you probably care about them more than anything. Get involved in their education at every step — from homework help to parent-teacher conferences.

A close relationship with your children can keep them from having problems in school.

Children need help to make decisions about school, relationships, work, and so on. This can be easier if your children can talk to you about their problems.

Be a good listener.

Young children want to talk about their school days, so take time to talk and listen every day. As children get older, especially during high school, they might not want to talk to their parents. They usually think their friends may understand them better. At this time, parents should be patient and think of ways to get involved in your children’s lives. You need to be a cheerleader (啦啦队队长) for your children. Tell your children you’re proud if they deserve it.

Offer your personal support.

Help your children practice multiplication tables (乘法表) or have them read you one of their essays. If your children are having trouble in school, offer to help them get through it.

In a word, having an honest and positive relationship with your children will help them succeed in school. Even if you don’t have the best experience in school, you can still help your children be successful. Besides, parents should know some effective ways of creating a great homework space.

5. Why are children unwilling to talk to their parents when they grow older?

A. Because their parents are too busy to listen.

B. Because they don’t think their parents can understand them well.

C. Because their parents don’t want to get involved in their lives.

D. Because they are too shy to speak out their secrets.

6. What does the underlined sentence mean?

A. Parents should never hurt their children’s feelings.

B. Parents should always be on their children’s side no matter what happens.

C. Parents should never point out their children’s mistakes.

D. Parents should encourage children when they make a real effort.

7. What would be talked about in the following paragraph?

A. How to be your children’s best teacher.

B. How to improve yourself to give your children more help.

C. How to make a good homework space for your children.

D. How to communicate with your children.
