You are the collector in the gallery of your life. You collect. You might not mean to but you do. One out of three people collects tangible things such as cats, photos and noisy toys.

These are among some 40 collections that are being shown at “The Museum Of”—the first of several new museums which, over the next two years, will exhibit the objects accumulated(积累)by unknown collectors. In doing so, they will promote(推动)a popular culture of museums, not what museums normally represent(代表).

Some of the collections are fairly common—records, model houses. Others are strangely beautiful—branches that have fallen from tree, for example. But they all reveal (显露)a lot of things: ask someone what they collect and their answers will tell you who they are.

Others on the way include “The museum of Collectors” and “The Museum of Me.” These new ones, it is hoped, will build on the success of “The Museum Of.” The thinkers behind the project want to explore why people collect, and what it means to do so. They hope that visitors who may not have considered themselves collectors will begin to see they, too, collect.

Some collectors say they started or stopped making collections at important points: the beginning or end of adolescence ( 青春期 )—“it's a growing-up thing; you stop when you grow up,” says one. Other painful times are mentioned, such as the end of a relationship.

  1. (1) How will the new museums promote a popular culture of museums?

A . By collecting more tangible things. B . By correcting what museums normally represent. C . By showing what ordinary people have collected. D . By accumulating 40 collections two years from now.
  2. (2) What can be learned about collectors from their collections?

A . Who they are. B . How old they are. C . Where they were born. D . Why they might not mean to collect.
  3. (3) Which of the following is an aim of the new museums?

A . To help people sell their collections. B . To encourage more people to collect. C . To study the importance of collecting. D . To find out why people visit museums.
  4. (4) According to the last paragraph, people may stop collecting when they _______.

China is the biggest market in the world, and many countries such as Germany, the USA, the UK and Russia do a lot of business in China. Let's have a look at some important tips to help you be successful when dealing with these nationalities.

First, you must be punctual (准时的) with Germans. Even 5 minutes late makes a bad impression. Being punctual is also very important in the USA. In the UK, it's important to be punctual for business meetings, but nobody expects you to be on time for a social event. Half past seven really means a quarter to eight, or even eight o'clock! With Russians, you should always be on time, though it is not unusual for them to be one or even two hours late!

It is best to dress formally and wear dark colours when you meet people from all the four countries. In Russia, designer clothes are very common. Don't be surpri if you go to an office in the UK on a Friday and find everyone wearing jeans. Many companies have “dress down Friday”, when people wear casual (随便的) clothes.

In Germany, first names are only used by family members and close friends, so be prepared to use titles and last names. In the USA you will usually be invited to use first names almost immediately. The British are quite informal and using first names in business is more and more common, especially among younger people. In Russia, however, nobody uses first names, so use titles and last names.

In conversation, the British and the Americans value humour, and both like to talk about sport. The weather is also a good topic of conversation with the British and the Americans, but avoid talking about politics. In Russia, say positive(肯定的) things about their country, but avoid making complaints. The Germans, however, prefer to get straight down to business!

So, use these tips, and you will be on your way to a successful international business career!

  1. (1) Which color should you NOT wear when meeting a person from the USA?

    A . Dark blue. B . Gray. C . Black. D . White.
  2. (2) All of the following statements are true EXCEPT ______.

A . you can say something funny when you talk to an American B . you can use his first name when you talk to an Englishman C . you must be on time when you meet people from each of the four countries D . people wear whatever they like on Friday in some companies in the UK
  3. (3) When you talk to a Russian, you can ______.

A . complain about something B . say something negative about his country C . say something good about his country D . point out some disadvantages in politics
  4. (4) The tips in this passage are probably given to people from ______.

    A . China B . the USA C . Germany D . the UK

After finishing my teaching for a school year, I thought that I should go back to Montreal, Quebee, my hometown for a visit. My main goal was to relax in preparation for the challenges of my retirement in the coming year.

Through my stay in Montreal, I met lots of Chinese who are struggling to succeed and then lead a better life in Canada.

Some travelled thousands of miles to get knowledge. When I spoke with some of them about the major barrier they had to face after they arrived in Canada, they all talked about the two official languages of Canada. But I was impressed by their ability to express their ideas while switching between English and French.

Almost all of those people said they often felt homesick. They miss their families and friends. Though Montreal has lots of Chinese restaurants, they long for a home-cooked meal.

I met some tourists who were trying to realize their childhood dreams of experiencing the life in a developed country. When I asked them if Montreal had lived up to their expectations, they hesitated. They said that reality never agrees with fantasies. However, they were glad to have the opportunity to visit Montreal and didn't regret taking the trip.

Not all the Chinese people I met were happy. I once met a young lady who met with a gentleman through the Internet. However, to her disappointment, he disappeared after he promised to marry her in Montreal.

I was served by another Chinese person who could not handle the challenges of studying in an English environment and ended up working in a restaurant with minimum pay.

Exploring different parts of the world, without any doubt, is an enriching experience However, one should be realistic when it comes to leaving his hometown to set up a new life in a foreign country. One should take the time to examine the advantages and the shortcomings of the venture before they decide to chase an uncertain dream of achieving success or leading a better life.

  1. (1) The writer went to her hometown to       .

  4. (4) What is the best title for the passage?
A . Improving Life Skills in Canada B . Exploring Different Parts of Canada C . Struggling for a Better Life in Canada D . Going to Canada—Your Ideal Destination
