We achieve it actively by direct experience, by testing and proving an idea, or by reasoning. We achieve knowledge passively by being told by someone else. Most of the learning that takes place in the classroom and the kind that happens when we watch TV or read newspapers or magazines is passive. Conditioned as we are to passive learning, it's not surprising that we depend on it in our everyday communication with friends and co-workers. It makes us tend to accept what we are told even when it is little more than hearsay and rumor.

Did you ever play the game Rumor? It begins when one person writes down a message but doesn't show it to anyone. Then the person whispers it, word for word, to another person. That person, in turn, whispers it to still another, and so on, through all the people playing the game. The last person writes down the message word for word as he or she hears it. Then the two written statements are compared.

The simple fact that people repeat a story in their own words changes the story. Then, too, most people listen imperfectly. And many enjoy adding their own creative touch to a story, trying to improve on it, stamping it with their own personal style. Yet those who hear it think they know.

A statement of opinion by one writer may be restated as a fact by another, who may in turn be quoted by yet another; and this process may continue, unless it occurs to someone to question the facts on which the original writer based his opinion or to challenge the interpretation he placed upon those facts.

A. Typically, the original message has changed.

B. Finally everybody gets the meaning.

C. Unfortunately, passive learning has a serious problem.

D. Knowledge is passed down from generation to generation.

E. That's what happens in daily life.

F. This process is also found among scholars and authors.

G. We can achieve knowledge either actively or passively.

Learning to set goals plays an important role as your child starts to gain independence. However, setting goals doesn't come naturally to your child, so helping him to learn the process should probably be one of your goals.

Explain the word “goal”. Your child may know what a goal is when it comes to soccer, but he may not understand what it means in everyday life.

Listen to your child. Ideally, you want your child to be able to decide for himself what his goals are. Let him talk about what he thinks he does well and what he thinks needs to improve. If he's stuck, you can provide some examples of your own personal goals.

Help keep goals achievable. Don't throw cold water on your child. For example, if your child wants to be a champion swimmer, but can't swim an entire lap of the pool yet, you can suggest he start by making that his first goal.

Help your child write down his goals in an easy-to-follow form. Being able to see and check off the steps on the way to his goal is the key in keeping him motivated. A really simple way is to have your child draw a ladder on a piece of paper, writing his goal at the top and each step to that goal on the rungs (横木).

A. Change goals every so often.

B. Make a visual goal reminder.

C. Don't always tell him what you think.

D. He's climbing to the top as he gets closer to his goal.

E. You can take sports as example to help explain it to him.

F. Once he has set up a goal, he may find it very difficult to achieve it.

G. When a goal is beyond his reach, help him break it down into smaller pieces.

When the kids are out of school, parents are eager to use the holidays for some quality family time. While there's great concern among parents about the impact of screens on physical activity and face-to-face communications, parental use of screens is often overlooked. One recent report found that parents spend over nine hours per day with screen media. It's no wonder that families find it hard to have high-quality social interactions.

Want our kids to put down the phones and tablets? It's necessary that we unplug when we ask our kids to do the same. Some family activities we create can help us engage with our kids without the concern of screen time.

Why not leave the devices at home and go for a tech-free nature walk? It will be an opportunity to make us more connected to the world beyond the screen. Focus on being in the moment and kids may enjoy collecting plant seeds or stones.

A board game night is ideal for bringing family members together and being engaged. Moreover, playing games together fosters social interaction, cooperation, and the development of Social Emotional Learning (SEL).

Some other family activities are wonderfully fun without the use of electronic devices. For example, take the kids swimming, or bring them to an indoor rock climbing gym. Bake a cake for a neighbor or plant a garden. Your kids will get lost in the activity, forgetting the devices.

To be clear, technology has many benefits to parents and children. However, creating some tech-free time can help parents and kids feel more connected to each other.

A. We parents must model that behavior.

B. Even so, too much of a good thing can be bad for family time.

C. However, many of us find it hard to compete with electronics.

D. Parents may learn from their kids about science and nature as well.

E. Best of all, family members can enjoy being engaged in a shared experience.

F. The kids are more likely to have buy-in when they feel like they have a say.

G. All these activities require family members to focus their attention on the task at hand.

Four Ways to Give Truly Meaningful Gifts

Buying someone you love a gift that expresses your truest feelings isn't always easy. But when you get it right, the joy they show is worth it.

    Listen up.

While you may think it's a great idea to surprise someone by giving them something you think is meaningful, it's best to get them exactly what they have told you. For example, you heard friends say they wanted the newest bike but you bought them a gym membership instead.  So get them what they've specially asked for.

In the spirit of showing love, we might go big. However, we may not be thinking of what really makes the person happy. You might think buying your father the latest TV is perfect, but then when you get it home, it lights up the living room like a stadium and is totally wrong for the space. So think smart.

    Keep it open.

Many of us may consider giving cash impersonal(没人情味的). But this may save you some concern. The receiver can be allowed to choose whatever they want. In a recent survey of over 7,000 Black Friday shoppers, 39 percent said the receiver they were shopping for was “picky(挑剔)”.

    Create an experience.

Visit websites where you can get the latest tickets for a play, buy a surf lesson, or even something unexpected like a flight lesson.  For example, if your kids are into NASCAR, just imagine the look on their faces when you score them a ride at a race car driving school. So give them a time that they will remember to heart.

A. Ignore the size.

B. Go for something big.

C. Well, that was the wrong move.

D .If possible, cut down the cost of the gifts.

E. These are things that can create a lasting memory.

F. Here's how to discover a gift your receiver will love.

G. So save yourself the second guess and give cash instead.

What should you think about in trying to find your career(职业)? You are probably better at some school subjects than others.  A boy who is good at mathematics can use that in an engineering career. A girl who spells well and likes English may be good at office work. So it is important to do well at school. On the other hand, you may not have any specially strong or weak subjects but your records show a general good result.  Knowledge of history is not required for most jobs but if history is one of your good subjects you will have learned to remember facts and details. This is an ability that can be useful in many jobs.

Your school may have taught you skills, such as typing or technical drawing, which you can use in your work. You may be good at metal work or cooking and look for a job where you can improve these skills.

You may have learned how to get to work on time and get on with older workers. You may have learned to give correct change in a shop, for example. Just as important, you may become interested in a certain industry or career you see from the inside in a part-time job.

You may be all thumbs when you deal with tools; perhaps you are a poor speller or cannot add up a column of figures. It is better to face any weaknesses than to pretend they do not exist. Your school record, for instance, may not be too good, yet it is an important part of your background. You should not feel sorry for it.

A. This does not have direct value for future job hunting.

B. These may show strengths that you can use in your work.

C. Facing your weak points is also part of knowing yourself.

D. Having a part-time job is a good way to find out your weak points.

E. Instead, you should recognize that you will have a chance of a fresh start at work.

F. Although not all subjects can be used directly(直接地) in a job, they may have indirect value.

G. If you have had a part-time job on Saturdays or in the summer, think what you gained from it.

Reasons you should make time for the sunset

Here's why you should consider making time to watch the sunset

    ⒈It can slow down time.

Seriously. By witnessing the beauty of the sunset, you can slow down your perception (感知)of time.  Amazingly, by taking the time to look at the vast sky, we're actually empowering ourselves to regain control of the clock.

⒉It can provide energy for you.

Even if you have to go back to the office after you watch that last sliver disappear below the skyline, taking a few minutes out of your day to experience some of the golden hour will be worth it. Often when we feel exhausted we reach for a cup of coffee, but research suggests a better way to get energized (给予能量)is to connect with nature.

⒊It will force you to put your phone down.

When we regard the experience of sunsets as special occasions, we feel the urge to document and save them—as if keeping photos of their beauty will help us remember that wonder ful feeling. .

    ⒋It will inspire you.

There's a reason sunsets are a timeless and constant inspiration to poets, writers and romantics.

    ⒌.

All of us are drawn to sunsets, but people in a few special places really regard the sunset as a daily opportunity to give thanks;, Crowds gather to cheer and applaud it, reinforcing (加强)the idea that we should celebrate and be thankful for each day.

The problem of robocalls has become so severe that many people now refuse to pick up calls from numbers they don't know. By next year, half of the calls we receive will be scams (欺诈). We are finally waking up to the severity of the problem by supporting and developing a group of tools, apps and approaches intended to prevent scammers from getting through. Unfortunately, it's too little, too late. By the time these "solutions" become widely available, scammers will have moved onto cleverer means. Soon you will also question whether the voice you're hearing is actually real.

That's because there are a number of powerful voice manipulation and automation technologies that are about to become widely available for anyone to use. At this year's I/O Conference, a company showed a new voice technology able to produce such a convincing human-sounding voice that it was able to speak to receptionist and book a reservation without detection.

The reason that robocalls are a headache has less to do with amount than precision. A decade of data breaches (数据侵入) of personal information has led to a situation where scammers can easily learn your mother's name, and far more. Armed with this knowledge, they're able to carry out individually targeted campaigns to cheat people. This means, for example, that a scammer could call you from what looks to be a familiar number and talk to you using a voice that sounds exactly like your bank teller's, tricking you into "confirming" your address, mother's name, and cark number. Scammers follow money, so companies will be the worst hit. A lot of business is still done over the phone, and much of it is based on trust and existing relationships..

We need to deal with the insecure nature of our telecom networks. That might mean either developing a uniform way to mark videos and images, showing when and who they were made by, or abandoning phone calls altogether and moving towards data-based communications — using apps like FaceTime or WhatsApp, which can be tied to your identity.

Credibility is hard to earn but easy to lose, and the problem is only going to get harder from here on out.

A. Voice manipulation technologies may weaken that gradually.

B. There are many challenges in robotics that need to be addressed in order to solve the voice manipulation and assembly problems.

C. In the near future, it's not just going to be the number you see on your screen that will be in doubt.

D. It's high time that the government should spare no effort to tackle the problem immediately.

E. Phone carriers and consumers need to work together to find ways of determining and communicating what is real.

F. Those developments are likely to make our current problems with robocalls much worse.

How to Build a Better Breakfast

We've all heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and that may actually be true. A study found that breakfast eaters were more likely to lose weight than those who didn't eat a morning meal.  But it's not just when you eat; it's what you eat. These tips will help you really rise and shine:

⒈ Eat even if you're not hungry.

Although you might not feel like eating first thing in the morning, it's a good idea to get something into your system. Eating within 90 minutes of waking up will jump-start your metabolism (新陈代谢) and keep you from getting hungry later.

⒉ Be boring.

Changing what you eat is a good idea in theory, but if you are watching your weight, you might want to stick with the same old menu. People who allowed their breakfast calories to change have larger waists (腰围) and a higher incidence of metabolic syndrome (代谢综合征) than folks who keep their morning calorie intake constant, no matter how much they eat the rest of the day.

⒊ Add peanuts or peanut butter.

By eating peanuts or peanut butter, the carbohydrates(碳水化合物) are taken in more slowly and blood sugar does not rise as high.  So they are less likely to snack later.

There's an old saying that advises ''Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper." It's worth following. Those who eat a balanced 700-calorie breakfast over a 12-week period lower their blood sugar and blood pressure twice more than people who eat a 200-calorie meal. They also lose an average of 19. 2 pounds and have lower levels of ghrelin, the "hunger hormone (激素).

Time management is an important skill to develop. It can help you make the most out of each day, leading to success in areas like work and school. To manage your time, use your time productively by working in the right environment and prioritizing tasks.

The environment you work in can help with your overall productivity. There are no strict rules about a work environment, so pick what feels right for you. Surround yourself with inspiring decorations that help you feel enthusiastic and passionate.

List your tasks in terms of importance. To-do lists are a great tool, but organize them a little rather than just writing down everything that needs to get done. Group tasks in terms of importance.

Keep some work with you at all times. Take advantage of your downtime by keeping work with you at all times. If you're a student, think about investing in some audio-books or recording your lectures. While waiting in line or walking to class, you can listen to material for your courses.

Do not multitask. Many people assume multitasking is a great way to get more done each day and manage time wisely. However, focusing on multiple tasks at once actually makes you less productive. Things will take longer to do, as you're not giving anything your full attention.

You will get your work done quicker this way, allowing you to make the most of your time.

A. List tasks under each category.

B. Create the right environment to work.

C. Focus completely on one task at a time instead.

D. Before you begin your work load for the day, make a list.

Perseverance(坚持)

What's the key to perseverance? Putting one foot in front of the other will get you the finish line, but there are tools you can use to help you face down challenges, meet your goals and truly enjoy the process, rather than just getting by.

Know what you want. Maybe your goal is specific. Or maybe it's a more general goal, like aiming to be a happier person. Either way, the path toward meeting your goals will be much clearer if you know what you really want.

The first challenge you likely meet is improving your self-confidence. It's really difficult to make progress unless you believe you're capable of persevering. However difficult your goals may seem to reach now, you have the intelligence and power to make it.

Face reality. Having the ability to stare life's challenges in the face is a big advantage. When a big problem arises, it's so much easier to ignore it or put off making a decision. Practice seeing challenges for what they are so you can figure out the best way around, over or through them.

Learn from your mistakes. You won't always find your way on the first try. Wisdom is gained by making lots of mistakes and trying something different the next time around. Think about what has happened.

A. Get rid of self-doubt.

B. Take your options carefully.

C. But it can be really difficult to do.

D. Then reflect on what you can learn from the experience.

E. Perseverance is a necessary quality for us to be successful.

F. For example, you may want to quit smoking or get a better job.

G. Below are a few ways that help to increase your determination to keep moving forward.

Kids' health: Four steps for fighting stress

Everybody gets stressed time to time.  Some ways of dealing with stress —like screaming or hitting someone—don't solve (解决)much. But other ways, like talking to someone you trust, can lead you to solving your problem or at least feeling better.

Try taking these four steps the next time you are stressed:

1) Get support. When you need help, reach out to the people who care about you. Talk to a trusted adult, such as parent or other relatives.  They might have had similar problems, such as dealing with a test, or the death of a beloved pet.

2) Don't take it out on yourself. Sometimes when kids are stressed and upset they take it out on themselves. Oh, dear, that's good idea. Remember that there are always people to help you. Don't take it out on yourself.

3) Try to solve the problem. After you're calm and you have support from adults and friends, it's time to get down to business.  Even if you can't solve it all, you can solve a piece of it.

4) Be positive. Most stress is temporary(暂时的). Remember stress does go away, especially when you figure out the problem and start working on solving it. These steps aren't magic, but they do work. And if you can stay positive as you make your way through a tough time, you'll help yourself feel better even faster.

A. Ask for a helping hand to get you through the tough situation.

B. Notice your friends' feelings and find a way to help them.

C. Different people feel stress in different ways

D. Ah, it feels so good when the stress is gone.

E. You need to figure out what the problem is.

F. And don't forget about your friends.

G. Then, find a way to calm down.
