Here's an awkward confession (承认): I've cried at every job I've had. I always find it difficult to 1 my emotions. And each time I've wondered exactly why these emotional moments are considered so taboo (忌讳的). Is it a universal truth that you just can't cry at work?

As someone puts it on the internet, as professional women, we're dealing with the great expectation to “be 2 in the pursuit of what sets your soul on fire” while also making enough money to pay rent. 3, my eyes get a little watery just thinking about it. So if crying at work is unavoidable – yet taboo – what is an ambitious young woman to do to 4 after one of these embarrassing incidents?

My usual routine after an in-office disaster is to remove my contact lenses, have a massive iced-coffee, and 5 it never happened (until it happens again). Clearly, I'm no expert on the correct professional response. So I spoke with my personal finance coach, Ashley Feinstein Gerstley, to see if she had any 6 for reducing the humiliation (丢脸).

“It's so embarrassing, but telling yourself not to cry usually 7 making you cry more,” she says. “You're using all your energy to hold it together, trying to change an awkward situation, but there's so much pressure that the tears will almost unavoidably come. Women tend to over-apologize, especially at work. If you do end up getting upset, it can be helpful to 8 yourself from the situation. Take a minute to get it together, and come back ready to have a more composed (镇静的) exchange.”

Maybe there's some benefit in crying. I've definitely found that 9 the taboo can lead to greater relationships with colleagues. I've noticed how tears have helped solve a disconnection or problem that might 10 have gone unsolved. To be honest, I'm hoping to recognize, if not celebrate, the rare office cry as a hidden skill for greater future.

I read about an athlete who made it all the way to the Olympics despite hating his chosen sport. He committed his entire life to 1 one tiny, yet large, sentence—I'm proud of you. At some point we all have someone we want to 2, whose approval means the world to us.

I have a clear memory of the person I wanted approval from telling me I was intelligent, the kind of memory that stays very clear because you've recalled it so many times. I had 3 someone's opinion about buying a Canadian soda. "We should really support our own economy," ten-year-old me said. I had no idea what that meant, 4 I was looked at with approval, and my heart was filled with 5. I loved that feeling—the approval of my hero. It was nothing like the Olympic athlete, but I made some very big 6 based on what might make them 7. I was hugely affected by wanting their approval.

Months ago this person removed me from his life. It hurt a lot. However, in life there is rarely hurt 8 growth. I recently 9 on myself and my behavior and noticed something—I feel free. I'd been using the desire for approval as an 12 excuse for hiding. My excuse was gone immediately I realized it 13. It was time to 14 step into myself and stop hiding who I am from others. Are you hiding? I hid in approval-seeking. Maybe you hide behind judgment. We all have our ways, and it can be really scary to let 15 go.

The thing is, 16, as long as we prevent ourselves being truly seen, we will never be truly understood. Connection with others won't be wholly authentic, and we will edit ourselves because we 17 potential thoughts in other people's heads. It's pretty 18. Of course, breaking up isn't 19 when you expect to be freed from wanting someone's approval. You don't even have to tell them you no longer care what they think of you. Just 20 and do what makes you happy and go for the things you really want in life. Do your thing, and let them do theirs.

Words to Turn a Conversation Around

It's not what you say, but it's how you say it – isn't it? According to a language expert, we may have this wrong. “We are pushed and pulled around by language far more than we 1,” says Elizabeth Stoke, professor of social interaction at Loughborough University. Stoke and her colleagues have 2 thousands of hours of recorded conversations, from customer services to mediation(调解) hotlines and police crisis 3. They discovered that certain words or phrases have the power to change the course of a conversation.

Some of these words are surprising, and 4 what we've been taught to believe. For example, in a study of conversations between doctors and patients, evidence showed that doctors who 5 options rather than recommended best solutions, got a better response, despite the suggestion from hospital guidelines to talk about the best interests of the patient. But, from conversation experts such as Stoke to FBI negotiators and communication coaches, we're learning which words are likely to 6 or persuade us.

Stoke found that people who had already responded 7 when asked if they would like to attend mediation seemed to change their minds when the mediator used the phrase. “Would you be willing to come for a meeting?” “As soon as the word 'willing' was used, people would say: 'Oh, yes, definitely'—they would actually 8 the sentence to agree.” Stoke found it had the same effect in different settings: with business-to-business cold callers; with doctors trying to 9 people to go to a weight-loss class. She also looked at phrases such as “Would you like to” and “Would you be interested in”. “Sometimes they 10, but 'willing' was the one that got people to agree more rapidly and with more enthusiasm.”

“'Hello' is a really important word that can change the 11 of a conversation,” Stoke says. “It's about how you respond to people who are what we call 'first movers' – people who say something really 12,” “It might be the work colleagues who are extremely angry to your desk with a complaint or the neighbor who 13 rude words about parking as you're putting out the bins.” “What do you do with that person? Rather than respond in the same manner, saying something nice, such as a very bright 'Hello!', socializes that other person a little bit.” Use it when you want to resist getting into a 14. “You have to be careful not to sound too passive-aggressive,” Stoke says, “but just one friendly word in a bright tone can delete the 15 of the conversation.”

Early in my career, I was always struck by the fact that "expensive" hotels charged extra for things like internet access and movies. At the same time, more 1 hotels included everything. Although these less expensive hotels did not have  2 lobbies (大堂), they did offer the things that a young and tired  3 would want: a clean room and a quiet environment.

For the high prices you pay at nice hotels, everything should be  4. They should give refunds (退款) for the things you don't  5 instead of cheating their customers.

I once read an article about a judge who was invited to a very expensive restaurant in Washington. The restaurant's food and service were both  6. But there was something that ruined the 7: the judge was charged $1 for the ice in his $7 mixed drink. The fact that he was charged the extra dollar separately – instead of just being charged $8 – made him so 8 that instead of talking about how wonderful everything was at the  9, he only talked about the $1. Needless to say, he  10  went back to that restaurant.

I see the  11  thing is starting to happen in the airline industry. For example, American Airlines is charging $3.50 for snacks and $7 for meals.  12 , sodas and water are still free. This will put more power in the hands of the  14 – the airline might be surprised to find that people are    15 to pay for extra services. Just imagine what could happen if you just trust your customers to make their own   16?

So remember, don't  17 your customers.  18 , charge what you think your service or product is worth and take it from there. This way, you can remove 19 services in exchange for lower prices. It becomes a win-win for you and your customers by sharing purchasing decisions and therefore giving your customers more 20.
