Who is the greatest teacher in Chinese history? Many people would think of Confucius, whose birthday was September 28. Although he lived over 2,000 years ago, people still remember and respect him for his contribution to the education today.
Confucius lived in the Kingdom of Lu, which lies in Shandong Province. He lived during the Spring and Autumn Period. He had a hard childhood. His father died when he was only 3. His mother brought him up. As a child, he had to work to help his mother, but young Confucius didn't give up studying. He visited many famous teachers and learned music, history, poetry and sports.
Later, he became a teacher and started the first public school in Chinese history. At that time only children from noble families could go to school, but Confucius believed everyone should go to school if they wanted to learn. He had about 3,000 students in his lifetime.
Today, people still follow Confucius’ lessons. He told us that we all have something worthy to be learned. "When I am with three people, one of them must be better than me in some areas. I choose their good qualities and follow them.”
He also taught us that thinking is very important in study. “All study but no thinking makes people puzzled (困惑的). All thinking but no study makes people lazy.”
Confucius is not only a great teacher, but also a famous thinker with wise thoughts about the world and society. His most important teachings are about kindness and good manners. “A person should be strict with himself, but be kind to others.” he said.

① Confucius worked to help his mother as a child.
② Confucius educated about 3,000 students in his lifetime.
③ Confucius’ father died.
④ Confucius started the first public school in Chinese history.
Doctor Seuss was born in 1904. By the middle 1950s, he had become one of the best-loved and most successful children's book writers in the world. His books are very popular with young readers. They enjoy the invented words and the pictures of unusual funny animals and plants.
In 1954, life magazine published(刊登) a report about school children who could not read. The report said many children's books were not interesting. Doctor Seuss strongly hoped to help children and decided to write books that were interesting and easy to read. He used words with the same ending sound, like fish and wish. He did not receive training in art. Yet, he drew the pictures for most of his books.
In 1957, Dr. Seuss wrote The Cat in the Hat. He used less than 230 words to write the book and even a six-year-old should be able to read it. It was a fun story and easy to read. Children loved it. Their parents loved it, too. Today it is still one of the stories they like best. The success of The Cat in the Hat made him want to write more books for children. In 1960, he wrote a book using less than fifty words. The book is called Green Eggs and Ham.
In 1984, Doctor Seuss won a Pulitzer Prize (普利策奖). He was honored for the education and enjoyment his books provided American children and their parents.
He died at the age of 87, but his influence remains. Millions of his books have been sold worldwide. People say his books helped change the way American children learned to read. Yet, his books are loved by people of all ages. Doctor Seuss once said, "I do not write for children. I write for people.

I'm volunteering at an animal shelter (动物收容所) that's just for cats. I feed the cats and play with them. It's very fun. I was also volunteer at a hospital for a little more than 2 years. I answered phone calls, looked after patients and helped nurses. I did some cleaning too. |

I did volunteer work to graduate from high school. It was a requirement(资格). I volunteered at a school for disabled kids. I played basketball and other sports with them and served food and drinks. It was actually pretty cool. If I weren't so busy now, I'd do it again. |
Jane is only four years o1d and she doesn't go to school. But she is very clever and learns a lot from her grandpa—an old teacher. One day, Jane's mother, Mrs John takes her to a party. The rich woman is angry. She te11s her friend—a teacher to ask Jane some questions, but the little girl answers all. Then she asks, "There are three birds in a tree. How many will be left(被留下)if I kill(杀死)one?”
“One” answers Jane. “You're wrong!” calls out the rich woman. “All of them will fly away”,“Do you think a dead(死的)bird can fly?”asks the little girl.
The guests begin to 1augh and the woman's face turns red.
Mike works very long hours every day. He usually gets up at 5: 00 p.m. He washes his face and makes his meal. What a funny time to make a meal! After eating his meal, he plays his guitar (吉他) for half an hour, then he puts on his jacket and goes to work with his guitar. To get to work, he takes the Number 17 bus to the Star Hotel. The bus usually gets there at about 9: 00 p.m. He works all night. People like to listen to him! He leaves there at 6: 00 a.m., and he watches the early news on TV at home. He goes to bed at 8:3 0 a.m. Do you know what his job is?
Hans said to his friend Kurt, "I'm going to take my car and drive to London." Kurt said," Driving to London is very difficult. You aren't going to find your hotel." But Hans was not afraid. He drove to Calais, put his car on his ship, took it off at Dover and drove to London.
He stopped near the city and looked at his map. Then he drove into London, but he didn't find his hotel. He drove round and round for an hour, and then he stopped and got out of his car. A taxi came, and Hans stopped it. "Take me to the Brussels Hotel." he said. But he didn't get into the taxi; he got back into his car. The taxi man laughed, but then he drove to the Brussels Hotel and Hans followed him in his car. They got to the hotel in two minutes.
An Irish priest (牧师) loved going fishing. It was his favourite hobby. However, the weather was so bad this year that he didn't have a chance to go fishing.
It was very strange that the weather was good every Sunday. But Sunday was the day when he had to go to work. The coming Sunday was good again according to the weather report, so he called another priest and told him that he lost his voice and was in bed with the fever. He asked him to take over his work.
The priest drove fifty miles to a river so that no one would find him. An angel in Heaven was keeping watch and saw what the priest was doing. He reported it to God. He thought God would do something about it.
With the first throw of us line, a huge fish bit down the fish food. For over an hour the priest was busy running up and down the river bank to fight the fish. In the end, he landed the large size fish. It was a world record — a Salmon (鲑鱼).
The angel did not know what was happening and asked God, “Why did you let him catch that huge fish? I thought you were going to teach him a lesson." God replied, "I did. Who do you think he's going to tell?"
I'm a Chinese student studying in Canada. I have been a boarder(寄宿生) with the Carsons for more than a year and a half.
The Carsons live in their own house, which has four bedrooms including the one in the basement(底层) which I live in. Judy does all the work in the house and Andrew is responsible for the work in the garden. When they go out in the evening, they often ask me to look after their children.
Judy's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Morris, lived in another city. Judy was their only child and naturally they doted on(溺爱) Judy's children. They often sent the children presents.
Last April Mr. Morris died. Now that Mrs. Morris was quite alone, I expected that Judy would want her to come and live with them. One day, Margaret told me grandma was coming to live with them and her daddy and mummy would want my room back. The news didn't surprise me and the next day I went to Judy and asked her about it. I said I couldn't think of living in their basement room any longer if it was needed for Mrs. Morris. Judy seemed surprised at first. Then she told me there was no deed for me to move, for they hadn't yet come to any decision about her mother coming to live with them. "Naturally I'm worried about my mother. She has been in poor health." She smiled sadly and added. "To be honest, Andrew and my mother have never got on well. We'll wait a bit and see what happens. Perhaps Moter will be all right living herself, of perhaps they will both change their minds."
That was six months ago. During this time I've heard that Mrs. Morris has had two illnesses and that her health has got worse. A nursing home was mentioned once but Mrs. Morris refused to go there. So up to now she's still living alone and I'm still living in the basement room.
I have a funny friend called Michael. He is about 1. 78mctres tall. He has poor eyesight(视力)because of too much computer work at night. He wears a pair of small, round glasses and they make him look smart.
Michael likes to tell funny jokes and they always make us laugh. He is humorous. So when I feel bored on unhappy, I always go to him.
He likes to wear a red T-shirt and jeans. He has short curly brown hair. Michael's legs are very long. When he passes the desk, he often knocks over our school things. He's so funny!
He is friendly to everyone and likes helping others. He always helps me with my English. With his help, I do well in English. I'm more interested in English.
Once there was a small hotel whose keeper was always caring about money.
One day, a businessman arrived. The keeper looked at the man's thick wallet and thought, "Oh, I wish that all the money could be mine!" The businessman didn't notice that, so he ordered the most expensive room and went to his room to dress for dinner.
Around the hotel, there were some beautiful ginger(姜) plants. Many people said that eating the buds(芽) of ginger would make a person forgetful.
The keeper thought, "If I serve some buds of ginger to the businessman, he may be forgetful to take his wallet!" Then she went to the kitchen.
Soon, businessman came downstairs and asked for dinner. The keeper was very excited as she served the dish to him. "Delicious!" said the rich man. When dinner was finished, he went to bed happily.
In the next morning, the keeper saw the businessman leaving from the front door. As soon as he was out of sight, she ran up to his room. She looked all over the room for the wallet, but she couldn't find it. Suddenly, she noticed a piece of paper on the floor. It was the businessman's bill(账单). He had forgotten to pay it! She ran down the stairs, out of the front door, and across the road until she was out of breath, but the businessman was already far, far away. "I'm so silly!”" cried the keeper.
John went to spend his summer holiday in China with his parents last year. They visited some famous cities like Beijing, Guangzhou, Kunming and Shanghai. In Beijing he visited the Great Wall, Tian' anmen Square and the Palace Museum. They also went to the zoos and the parks. The weather was fine and cool. They had a good time in the parks. They also took lots of photos there. In Guangzhou, they visited some museums. They were very interesting but kind of crowded. In Kunming the weather is never too hot in summer. They visited the Stone Forest, the Golden Temple and EXPO Garden. They climbed the Xishan Mountain. In Shanghai they went to the beach and had great fun playing in the water.
"It's very interesting to visit China and I learned a lot about Chinese history," John said. "
If I have another chance, I'll come back to China again."
Little Peter is a boy of nine. He began to go to school the year before last and now he's in Grade Three. He lives not far from the school, but he's often late for class. He likes watching TV in the evening and goes to bed late, so he can't get up on time in the morning.
This term Mrs Black, Peter's aunt, works in Peter's school. She teaches Grade Three maths. She's strict with Peter and often tells the boy to obey (遵守) the school rules and come to school on time. Yesterday morning Peter got up late. When he hurried to school, it was 8:15. His aunt was waiting for him at the school gate.
"You're ten minutes late for the first class, Peter." Mrs Black said angrily. "Why are you often late for class?" Every time, when I get to the street corner, I always see a guidepost. It says, 'SCHOOL-GO SLOW!

People sometimes like to read stories of dogs very much. They think that dogs are much cleverer than cats, sheep, cows or other animals in their homes.
One of my close friends, Bob, has a very large police dog named Jack. Every Sunday afternoon, Bob and Jack have a walk in the park nearby. Jack likes these walks very much.
One Sunday afternoon, I paid a visit to Bob. I stayed there for a long time. Bob and I had much more talk with each other than ever before. Soon it was time for them to take a walk in the park but we forgot that. Jack became worried about it. He walked around the room several times and then sat down in front of me and looked at me. But I still paid no attention(注意)to him. I went on talking with Bob. At last, Jack could not wait any longer. He went out of the room and came back a few minutes later. He sat down in front of me again. But this time, he held my hat in his mouth.
Suddenly, I understood what Jack meant and my friend understood, too.
Betty and I were born on the same day, so every year we have a birthday party together. But this year, we had a costume party(化装舞会) instead.
While we were writing the invitations(邀请函), my mum came in and asked, "Why not invite John? “John had been in our class for only a few months, but he was already getting better grades in math than anyone else in class. I wrinkled (皱起)my nose, "Mum, he wears the same pants to school every day. How could he even afford a costume?" Mum said nothing.
The next day, mum gave me an envelope (信封)with a shopping card in it. "I thought it would be nice for you to give this to John." Mum said. But how? We didn't want to make embarrassed(尴尬). We discussed it for a long time. Finally, Betty and I had a good idea.
On the day of our party, kids arrived, dressed differently. John arrived, in an old sheet (床单), but still in the same brown pants as usual, We danced, ate snacks and played games in groups. Before eating the birthday cake, Betty said in a loud voice, "Now it's time for the great prize game. It's the following riddle. "It was a math game. None of us was surprised when John came up with the right answer first and walked off with the envelope.
Everything went on well as we planned. John wore a new pair of pants and a new shirt the next week. He felt happy. So did we.
Ray's wedding had gone off smoothly. Everyone seemed to have had a good time. A few people had too good a time; they went home with designated (指派的) drivers. All evening, the gift table remained unguarded. Who would steal anything, Ray thought. He had never heard of such a thing happening at a wedding. But his best friend Aaron said there was a first time for everything. He strolled out regularly from the inside festivities (庆祝) to check on the gift table, making sure no one suspicious was hanging around it.
Ray and Julia went on a 3-week honeymoon to Italy right after the wedding. When they got back, they opened all the gifts and sent out thank-you notes. But there was one problem. A married couple that used to be good friends had apparently given nothing. This surprised Julia, because Walt and Mary said they were thrilled to be invited. And, they actually seemed to have had a great time at the wedding. Frankly, Ray didn't even care if they hadn't given a gift. He just needed to know whether to send a thank-you note. Ray called Aaron. Aaron said maybe Walt had left an envelope on the gift table like Aaron had. "Yes, but we got your envelope with the cash inside," Ray said. "Maybe my envelope looked too thin, and some thief thought Walt's envelope looked nice and fat."
Aaron asked Ray if he had looked everywhere for Walt's gift. Had he called up the wedding site to see if anything had been left behind? Ray said that he had looked everywhere and made a lot of calls that were fruitless.
Ray didn't know what to do. If he sent Walt and Mary a thank-you note for a gift they hadn't given, they would be insulted. If he didn't send them a thank-you note for a gift they had given, they would get angry.
"What would you do?" Ray asked. Aaron said he would call Walt up and tell him the problem.
"You can't go wrong with simply being honest," Aaron said.
"Oh, yes, you can," Ray contradicted (反驳) him. "Sometimes it's best to let sleeping dogs lie." But he thought about it, and finally decided that Aaron was right. He called Walt and told him the problem. Walt said that yes, he had given an envelope. In fact, the envelope contained $500 cash.
"$500?!" Ray asked. "That's a lot of cash, Walt!" Walt admitted that it was, but he had gotten a fat raise (加薪) early that year and Ray's was the only wedding he'd been to in quite a while. Ray thanked him very much, and apologized sincerely for someone stealing Walt's generous gift. Walt told him that it was "only money".
When Ray told Aaron about Walt's gift, Aaron laughed. "The only thief at the wedding was Walt! I quit playing cards with him last year because I caught him cheating. And it was only a $10 pot! I'm sure I told you about that."
"Yes, you did tell me," Ray said. But, of course, he had to send Walt a thank-you note anyway.
Every child has a dream of what they want to be, right? When Renee Butts was little, her dream was to become a volunteer firefighter because her father was one. Sadly, when she was 14, her father died and she was never able to volunteer with him. Renee's story doesn't end there, however, which is why I think of her as a true hero. She was strongminded and never gave up, which makes her a good firefighter.
Some days she must be ready to deal with any emergency, like fighting a fire, dealing with a car accident or helping someone who's sick. Other days, she is in the driver's seat. Sometimes, Renee works nine to eleven days a month on 24hour shifts. She also has a family to take care of. Her husband is a firefighter, too.
Renee remembers the first time she fought a fire. She was awoken early in the morning by the alarm. She said she was very nervous but did what she had to do.
When I asked Renee what the best part of her job is, she replied, "Helping people and saving their lives." I think that shows signs of being a true hero. She's always glad to do anything for anyone in need. With 140 people in her station, Renee is one of the only three women.
I think she's great. We could never live without people like her who is glad to help others. Renee's deed helps me believe that I can do anything. I hope someday to be just like her: to wake up and help people every day.
One day in the eighth grade, I was taking a Math Test
trigonometry (三角学) .
Now for a middle school student, there was nothing easy about it. So I had
studied for about two hours the night before. After reviewing it for some time,
I had started to understand it, so then I closed the book and ____________.
However, it was not until midnight that I fell asleep. The next day, when I got
the test, I tried my best to work out the hard problems, but the numbers I came
up with were strange. I sat back on my chair and looked for any possible
answers, but I could not remember anything or think correctly. I started
thinking about my dad coming home from work to find that I failed the test.
"How could you have failed the test? I am
sure that nobody else in the whole class got as bad a grade as you did!"
Naturally I didn't want that to
happen. My dad was also really busy at work at present, so I was afraid that
this may make him mad. When feeling hopeless, I noticed that my table partner
was writing fast on his test. I was attracted to look over at his test, but
then the many bad results I had heard about cheating (作弊) came into my mind. I know that if I started cheating now, it would
be hard to give up that habit during high school. In the end, I decided not to
copy his answers, and got a B- on that test. Even though my dad gave me a hard
time about it, it would have been a lot worse if he found out that I had given
in and cheated.
a. The writer thought about whether to cheat.
b. The writer prepared for the test.
c. The writer was afraid that his father would be mad at him.
d. The writer tried to work out the hard problems.
