Tyler was a troublesome student. He sat in the back row. Every time I called him to answer questions, he'd reply with a flip(轻率的)answer. If he got it wrong, he would get very angry.
Usually kids could sit quietly in class. However, Tyler was just loud. One day, Tyler was talking while I was teaching. I said to him, “Tyler, why not join in our discussion instead of having one of your own?” He got up from his chair, pushed it over, and shouted something I can't remember. I sent him to the office and he received a week's out-of-school punishment.

From then on, Tyler was a changed student in my classroom. In fact he was a smart child and he even stopped a fight between two students one day. And he never used the privilege(特权)to leave the class for a moment. I believe that just letting him decide for himself made all the difference.

The boy began his lessons with an old Japanese judo master. The boy was doing well, so he couldn't understand why, after three months of training, the master had taught him only one move.

"Sensei (老师)," "he boy finally said, "shouldn't I be learning more moves?"

“This is the only move you know, and this is the only move you'll ever need to know," the sensei replied.

Not quite understanding, but believing in his teacher, the boy kept training. Several months later, the sensei took the boy to his first competition. Surprising himself, the boy easily won his first two matches. The third match seemed to be more difficult, but after some time, his opponent (对手) became impatient. The boy skillfully used his one move to win the match. Still amazed by his success, the boy was now in the finals.

This time, his opponent was bigger, stronger, and more experienced(有经验的). For a while, the boy appeared to be overmatched. Thinking that the boy might get hurt, the referee (裁判) called a timeout. He wantedt to stop the match when the sensei said to him, "No, let him continue."

Soon after the match restarted, his opponent made a big mistake. The boy won! He was the winner. On the way home the boy tried to ask what was really on his mind. "Sensei, how could I win the competition with only one move?"

"You won for two reasons," the sensei answered." First, you've almost mastered one of the most difficult throws in all of judo. Second, the only known defense (防御) for that move is for your opponent to catch your left arm."

They say that "travel is the best teacher" and there is no better example of this idea than the Ming dynasty travel writer and geographer Xu Xiake (1587—1641). His book The Travel Notes of Xu Xiake, not only encour-aged a love of travelling among Chinese people but provided important scientific information about the country's land and geography.

Born into a wealthy Jiangyin family, Xu became interested in books about different places at an early age and wanted to travel. When he was 18, however, Xu's father died and so, it seemed, did his travelling dreams. He now was responsible for the family farm and taking care of his 60-year-old mother as tradition required.

But his mother had different ideas. Understanding her son's love of travel and valuing the knowledge he could get from such experiences, this modern-thinking woman refused to keep her son at home. She agreed that Xu could travel for three months every year, when there was less farm work.

So at the age of twenty and with his mother's support, Xu set off for the first time, leaving behind not only his mother but his new wife as well. He would repeat this goodbye each year for most of the next 30 years. During this time, he travelled throughout the Ming kingdom, carefully studying the lands he passed through and recording his experiences and many discoveries in a diary. This diary, which once had over 500,000 words, would eventually become The Travel Notes of Xu Xiake.

Although rich, Xu avoided comfortable travel, preferring to go almost everywhere on foot. This way he could research the environment in detail and get a true picture of the natural world. Many of his trips were to hard-to-reach mountain areas, and through wild forests where few people lived. His willingness to face hardships came at a cost however. Progress was slow and tiring and he was frequently sick, robbed and beaten during his journeys.

Sadly Xu became seriously ill during his last and longest journey, a 4-year trip through the southwest of China. He died in 1641, soon after returning to his hometown for the last time. When his diary was finally printed years after his death, much of it had been destroyed or lost. Although incomplete, it still made Xu a travelling legend around the world.

Over thousands of years, China has produced a large number of inventions. And the four inventions namely paper, gunpowder, the compass and printing, are traditionally referred to as the Four Great Inventions in China.
The invention of paper as we know came in China around 105 AD. The inventor of paper is traditionally considered to be Cai Lun. The great thing about Cai Lun's invention was that his paper was good to write on, cheap, light and easy to carry. However, a recent evidence (证据) shows paper was in use in China two hundred years earlier.
The second great invention, printing, goes closely with paper. Building on other printing technology, Bi Sheng invented movable type printing around 1040. Before its invention, people copied down things by handwriting. Today almost everyone in the world uses printing. People can use it to print newspapers, magazines and books.
The third great Chinese invention is gunpowder. Gunpowder was invented in the Tang Dynasty. Before its invention, people couldn't do some construction like building mountain tunnels (隧道). Today soldiers use it in guns and cannons. Constructors use it to break rocks into pieces. Scientists use it in rockets as fuel.
The compass was invented in the Spring and Autumn Period. The circular centre represents Heaven, and the square plate represents Earth. The handle of the spoon points south. The spread of the compass to Europe opened the oceans of the world to travel and led to the discovery of the New World.
