Almost everybody in America will spend a part of his or her life behind a shopping cart. They will, in a lifetime, push the shopping carts many miles, but few will know—or even think to ask—who it was that invented them.
Sylvan N. Goldman invented the shopping cart in 1937. At that time he was in the supermarket business. Every day he would see shoppers lugging groceries around in baskets they had to carry.
One day Goldman suddenly had the idea of putting baskets on wheels. To create the first shopping cart, Goldman used folding chairs. He out one basket on the seat, and he raised the chair by putting wheels under the legs. The wheeled baskets would make shopping much easier for his customers, and would help to attract more business.
On June 4, 1937, Goldman's first carts were ready for use in his market. He was terribly excited on the morning of that day as customers began arriving. He couldn't wait to see them using his invention. However, Goldman was disappointed. Most shoppers gave the carts a long look, but hardly anybody would give them a try. After a while, Goldman decided to ask customers why they weren't using his carts.
"Don't you think this arm is strong enough to carry a shopping basket?" one shopper replied.
Goldman wasn't beaten yet. He knew his carts would be a great success if only he could persuade people to give them a try. To this end, Goldman hired a group of people to push carts around his market and pretend they were shopping! Seeing this, the real customers gradually began copying the phony customers.
As Goldman had hoped, the carts were soon attracting larger and larger numbers of customers to his market. Not only did more people come—those who came bought more. With larger, easier-to-handle baskets, customers unconsciously bought a greater number of items than before.
Today's shopping carts are five times larger than Goldman's original model. Perhaps that's one reason Americans today spend more than five times as much money on food each year as they did before 1937—before the coming of the shopping cart.
a. Many shoppers began to use the shopping carts.
b. Goldman invented the shopping carts.
c. Goldman paid some people for using the shopping carts.
d. Few shoppers would like to use the shopping carts.
In the Charles F. Johnson Elementary School in New York, there is a special radio. It gives people warnings about bad weather.
One day, there came a sound from the radio. This sound brought the piece of news: a heavy storm was coming. William Tomic, principal(校长) of the school, asked teachers to bring children indoors and put them in a safe place at once.
Minutes later, the storm came. However, because of the warning of the radio and the quick work of the principal, no one was hurt.
"The radio really did work very well.(A)(我们对它的工作感到很满意), "William Tomic said. "The parents were happy as well."
The U. S. government hopes there will be more such successful stories. It plans to give this kind of radio to all 97, 000 public schools in the country.
Every year, more than 10, 000 big thunderstorms, 2, 500 floods, 1, 000 tornadoes(龙卷风) and some hurricanes(飓风) take place in the U. S., so the warning radios are very useful. They not only give people warnings about bad weather, but also give warnings about other dangerous things.
Last summer Jenny and her friends had a bus trip to New York. She felt very relaxing on the way. They visited a museum. But it's really crowded there and the display(展览) were not interesting at all. They went to different restaurants to have dinner. Some food was quite delicious, but Jenny thought the fast food was terrible. When the weather was fine, they went to the beach to swim. The sea was beautiful and they had a good time.

An English traveler found himself in Norway(挪威) with only enough money to buy the ticket for his journey back home. As he knew that it would take him only two days to get to England, he decided that he could easily spend the time without food. So he bought a ticket and went aboard the ship. The man closed his ears in order not to hear the sound of the lunch bell. When dinner time came , he didn't go to the dining room, saying that he was not feeling very well.
The next morning he still didn't have breakfast and at lunchtime he again stayed in his room. But at dinner time he was so hungry that he went to the dining room and ate everything the waiter put in front of him. He got ready for a quarrel.
"Bring me the bill," he said. "The bill, sir?" said the waiter in surprise. "There isn't any bill. On our ship meals are included in the money for the ticket," said the waiter.
"You're just in time, Joe.We're going to play cowboys and Indians, and you can be the Indians," one of my cousins said.
"How many Indians?" I asked.
"Oh, about a thousand," he answered, and before I could say no, I was pushed out into the night and became a thousand Indians. Two minutes later I was running in the fields with a group of cowboys behind. The shouts of "After them. Let's catch the killers!" and other such TV play language came into my ears as I ran round a corner and hurried into my Grandpa's car.
"We've got him, boys.Let's go and catch him!"
But no one wanted to come to get me.All of my cousins except one were always very friendly with.It was quiet outside. And I went out of the car to have a look.
Just then I heard a shout, "Bring the rope, and we can burn him."
"Only Indians burn people.Cowboys."I stopped just in time. I had almost said, "Cowboys hang people."
I was tied to a tree, and the cowboys were looking for some wood when my dear mother called, "We're leaving now."
"Untie me," I shouted."We're going."
"Why did Bobby want matches'?" Mum asked when we were in the car."He was asking Dad whether he had any."
"Oh, he was just going to get matches? MATCHES? Are you sure he wanted matches?"
Mother was quite sure, and I didn't say any more.

Mrs. Jackson is a reporter at www. australian- labradoodle-book.com. Her hobby is taking photos. Now she writes a new book with a lot of pictures of her dog. The book tells about her puppy.
When Harley was born, he only had two healthy legs.
What happened to the other two legs? Mrs. Jackson was very sad at this.
In fact, Harley also had two back legs, but they were deformed badly. When he was 8 weeks old, the owner took him to a nearby hospital. The doctors said they had no way to save(救)them. At last, they had to cut his back legs when he was just 12 weeks old. Later the poor dog had to practice running. Now he can run as fast as a usual dog.
Luckily, Harley is a happy dog. He never thinks he is different from other dogs. He is now 16 weeks old. He tries to run every day. The other day, a warm-hearted man gave him a wheel-chair. Now he can go out easily with the help of his wheel-chair. You see, Harley is a dog that never gives up.
Heritage (遗产) is traditional customs, history and beliefs. We use the word "heritage" in many different ways. People talk about their family heritage, city heritage and national heritage.
Today, heritage is changing. The Internet connects people around the world. In many ways this is a good thing, because we can learn about the heritage of other countries, and we can show our own heritage to the world. However, some people worry that traditional heritage is disappearing. In many ways, countries are becoming more and more alike(相似的). In most countries around the world, you can find KFC. Nike shoes, Starbucks coffee. American movies and so on. Some people think this is a good change, and others don't like it. You can decide whether or not it's a good thing.
However, everyone wants to protect traditional heritage, and sometimes this is hard. For example, when a new KFC opens in your city, a traditional restaurant might have to close.
That is why heritage protection is so important. Heritage protection is a simple thought. It means keeping your country's or your city's heritage alive. People do this in many ways. The biggest part of heritage protection is probably preserving (保护) old buildings. Some suggestions of heritage protection are making sure your kids speak your traditional language, and teaching knowledge about heritage to them.
The world is changing. No matter how it changes, never forget the heritage of our parents and grandparents.
My mom only had one eye. I hated her. I am always angry about it. She cooks dinner for students and teachers. One day at school, my mother sees me and says hello to me. I am so unhappy! How can she do this? I turn back and run away. The next day at school one of my classmates says, "EEEE, your mother only has one eye!" I don't know what to say. I wish my mother to just get away. I say to her at home, "If you're only going to make others laugh at me, just die." She doesn't say a word.
Many years later, I have family in another city. Then one day, my mother comes to visit me. When she stands at the door, my children laugh at her. I shout, "GET AWAY! NOW!" "Oh, I'm sorry. I have the wrong address(地址)."She says. A few years later, she dies. Somebody gives me a letter from my mother. It reads: "My dearest son, I think of you all the time. I'm sorry that I should not go to your house and…You see, when you are very young, you lose your eye in a car accident. As a mother, I give you mine. I am glad you can see a whole world for me with that eye. With all my love to you. Your mother. "
There was once a musician. He said he was not afraid of dangerous animals, "Even a bear would be as quiet as the friendliest cat when hearing my music." But he had never played the game, and no one believed him.
A chance to show his words arrived just when a circus (马戏团) came to the town. The musician came to the ringmaster (领班) and told what he could do.
"Wow, that's interesting." The ringmaster said. "We just have three new lions and they haven't worked with the lion tamer (驯兽师) yet. Let's see what you can do with them." The musician agreed and the whole town crowded the hall to see what would happen.
The musician was standing quietly in the center with a smile. Then the ringmaster opened the door of the cage and jumped out angrily a huge lion, shouting and showing his teeth. Everyone was too nervous to breathe.
Still with the smile, the musician began to play. The beautiful music rose, then the lion sat down and began to enjoy the music. Everyone lost themselves in the music. The lion did, too. For the second lion, ________________.
Then it was the third lion's turn to appear and everyone there was waiting for the lion to be quiet just like the other two. But the lion ran up to the man and ate him.
All the people were surprised. The other two lions asked angrily, "What have you done! We were enjoying the music!" The third lion put his paw (爪子) to its ear and said, "Sorry, I can't hear you. I have been deaf for 5 years."
Somebody Loves You

One cold rainy night, I was working on my Legos in my bedroom. I was dreaming of the day when I have earned enough money to buy my favourite set. To help me, my father rewarded me one dollar a day after I jogged with him in the morning.
Suddenly, the doorbell rang. I jumped from my chair and raced to the top of the steps, wondering who would visit us on such a rainy night. My mother opened the door. Surprisingly, she found a very untidy man. Overcome by pity, my mother invited him inside to the living room.
I went downstairs quietly so I could get a better look. I couldn't hear clearly what they were saying, but I saw the man holding his head in his hands and crying, which made my chest ache.
I raced back to my room, grabbed the one-dollar coin I had got that morning, ran back to the man, put the coin in his hand and gave him a hug. At that moment, I had no idea why I did so. Feeling embarrassed, I stood still.
In a while, the stranger sat quietly with his head bowed. Tears streamed down his face as he tightly held that coin. Finally, he said, ―I just thought nobody cared about me. For the last twenty years, I have been so alone… I have no family. That was the first hug I have gotten in — hmmm… I don't know how long. It's hard to believe that somebody cares.
Being a kid, I hadn't thought about what I was doing that night. I just had the reaction to the sight of someone else's pain. On our earlier morning jogs, my dad and I had talked about the importance of giving, but I hadn't had any idea of what it really meant.
Before the man left that night, my parents asked him why he had knocked on our door. He said that as he was walking along the streets, hopeless and ready to die, he had noticed a bumper sticker on the car in front of our house. The bumper (保险杠) sticker on the car read: SOMEBODY LOVES YOU.
Tyler was a troublesome student. He sat in the back row. Every time I called him to answer questions, he'd reply with a flip(轻率的)answer. If he got it wrong, he would get very angry.
Usually kids could sit quietly in class. However, Tyler was just loud. One day, Tyler was talking while I was teaching. I said to him, "Tyler, why not join in our discussion instead of having one of your own?" He got up from his chair, pushed it over, and shouted something I can't remember. I sent him to the office and he received a week's out-of-school punishment.
The week was a wonderful time for me, but when it came to an end, I began to feel worried. So I came up with a plan. On the day of his return, I told him I wanted to start over with him. If he felt like he was going to lose control in class, he could step outside the door for a moment.
From then on, Tyler was a changed student in my classroom. In fact he was a smart child and he even stopped a fight between two students one day. And he never used the privilege(特权)to leave the class for a moment. I believe that just letting him decide for himself made all the difference. When the year was over, he wrote me a thank-you note about how good the year had been for him. I still have it today and find it very moving to reread when I get stressed about teaching.
One Sunday evening two men met in a London pub. One of them was very unhappy.
"Life is terrible. Everything in the world is really boring," he said.
"Don't say that," said the other man. "Life is marvelous! The world is so exciting! Think about Italy. It is a wonderful country. Have you ever been there?"
"Oh, yes. I went there last year and I didn't like it."
"Well, have you been to Norway(挪威)? Have you even seen the midnight sun?"
"Oh, yes. I went in 1994 and I saw the midnight sun. I didn't enjoy it."
"Well. I have just returned from Sahara Desert (撒哈拉沙漠) in Africa. Have you visited Africa yet?"
"Yes. I went to Sahara Desert in Africa last year. It was really boring."
"Well," said the other man, "I think you're very ill. Only the best psychiatrist(心理学家) can help you. Go to see Dr. Greenhaum in Harley Street."
"I am Dr. Greenhaum," answered the man sadly.
Our new foreign students are going to arrive very soon, and here are some ways to communicate with them politely.
How close do you stand when you talk to a friend? You can stand close to people in the Middle East but don't stand too close to North Americans! Give them more personal space.
Do you know how to touch people correctly? Chinese girls often walk arm in arm with their friends. South Americans sometimes hold your arm when they talk to you, so you can't move away! But in Britain many people don't like other people to touch them at all.
Do you look at people when you talk? In some places,it isn't polite to look at people when you talk, but in other countries it isn't polite to look somewhere else. In Britain and the U. S., people usually look at each other when they talk.
And how do you say goodbye? That's easy, wave to say goodbye. But be careful! In Greece, it's not at all polite. In fact, it's very rude.
These days haze (雾霾) is around us here and there. In fact, everyone has the power to change their living habits to help reduce it. Many local governments call on their people to take action to make the air cleaner.
Transport is one of the biggest contributors (促成物) to haze. When, where, how, why and what you drive all affect air quality. When one drives to work for one year, he uses as much energy as a bus rider uses in 10 years. So walk or ride your bicycle to work or school whenever possible. If it is necessary, you can use public transport instead of your car. Each person using public transport for a year instead of a car can save nearly a tonne of pollutants, including CO2, from going into the atmosphere.
Carpooling is another way to reduce carbon emissions (排放) .Carpooling is the sharing of car journeys so that more than one person travels in a car. It immediately reduces your car's emissions by half.
What you do inside your living space can have a big effect on the air quality outside it. You can do a lot of things inside and around your home that will help you pollute less and save some money.
A large amount of our energy supply comes from burning coal, another contributor to haze. By cutting down your electricity use, you are cutting down on haze. So you may try to reduce your use of electricity by turning off lights, using your air conditioner wisely during the summer months, or updating some of your electrical appliances to low—energy models. For example, you can use energy—saving lamps that require less energy and last 10 times longer than common bulbs.
