When we talk about intelligence(智力), we do not mean the ability to get good scores on certain kinds of tests or even the ability to do well in school. By intelligence we mean a way of living and behaving(表现), especially in a new situation. If we want to test intelligence, we need to find out how a person acts instead of how much he knows what to do.
For example, when in a new situation, an intelligent person thinks about the situation, not about himself or what might happen to him. He tries to find out all can be, and then he acts immediately and tries to do something about it. Probably he isn't sure how it will all work out, but at least he tries. And if he cannot make things work out right, he doesn't feel ashamed(羞愧)that he failed, he just tries to learn from his mistakes. An intelligent person, even if he is very young, has a special outlook(看法)on life, a special feeling about life, and how he fits into it.
If you look at children, you'll see the great differences between what we call “bright” children and “non-bright” children. They are actually two different kinds of people, not just the same kind with different amount of intelligence. For example, the bright child really wants to find out about life, and he tries to get in touch with everything around him; while the unintelligent(不聪明的) child keeps more to himself and his own dream-world: he seems to have a wall between him and life in general.

  1. (1) According to this passage, intelligence is the ability to_________.

A . get some high scores on some tests B . do well in school C . deal with life D . have a lot of book knowledge
  2. (2) In a new situation, an intelligent person________.

A . knows more about what might happen to him B . is sure of the result he will get C . cares more about himself D . keeps his mind on what to do about the situation
  3. (3) If an intelligent person failed, he would _______.

A . try not to feel ashamed B . learn from his mistakes C . try to find all he could D . make sure what result he would get
  4. (4) Bright children and non-bright children________.

A . are two different types of children B . are different mainly in their degree of cleverness C . have differences only in their way of thinking D . have different knowledge about the world
“Sesame Street” has been called “the longest street in the world”. That is because the television program by that name can now be seen in many parts of the world. That program became one of American exports soon after it went on the air in New York in 1969.
In the United States more than six million children watch the program regularly. The viewers include more than half the country's pre-school children, from every kind of economic, racial (种族的), and geographical group.
Although some educators object (反对) to some parts of the program, parents praise (赞扬) it highly. Many teachers also consider it a great help, though some teachers find that problems come out when first graders who have learnt from “Sesame Street” are in the same class with children who have not watched the program.
Tests have shown that children from all racial, geographical, and economic backgrounds have benefited (受益) from watching it. Those who watch it five times a week learn more than occasional (偶尔的) viewers. In the US the program is shown at different hours during the week in order to increase the number of children who can watch it regularly.
The programs all use songs, stories, jokes and pictures to give children a basic understanding of numbers, letters and human relationships. But there are some differences. For example, the Spanish program, produced in Mexico City, devotes more time to teaching whole words than to teaching separate (单独的) letters.
Why has “Sesame Street” been so much more successful than other children's shows? Many reasons have been suggested. People mention the educational theories (理论) of its creators, the support by the government and private businesses, and the skillful use of various TV tricks. Perhaps an equally important reason is that mothers watch it along with their children. This is partly because famous adult stars often appear on it. But the best reason for the success of the program may be that it makes every child watching it feel able to learn. The child finds himself learning, and he wants to learn more.

  1. (1) Which of the following statements is NOT true?

A . It is shown at different hours during the week B . Famous adult stars often appear on it. C . This program has been on for less than forty years D . Children learn and enjoy themselves while watching it.
  2. (2) Why is “Sesame Street” so popular in the world?

A . Because it is supported by the government and businesses B . Because it uses different kinds of skillful tricks. C . Because mothers watch it along with their children. D . Because it makes every child watching it feel able to learn.
  3. (3) The best title for this passage can be _________.

    A . Sesame Street B . Educating Children C . TV Programs D . A Great Success
If you do not use your arms or your legs for some time, they will become weak, when you start using them again, they slowly become strong again. Everybody knows that. Yet many people do not seem to know that memory works in the same way.
When someone says that he has a good memory, he really means that he keeps his memory in practice by using it. When someone else says that his memory is poor, he really means that he does not give it enough chance to become strong.
If a friend says that his arms and legs are weak, we know that it is his own fault. But if he tells us that he has a poor memory, many of us think that his parents may be blamed(责备), and few of us know that it is just his own fault. Have you ever found that some people can't read or write but usually they have better memories ? This is because they cannot read or write and they have to remember things, they cannot write them down in a small notebook. They have to remember days, names, songs and stories, so their memory is the whole time being exercised.
So if you want to have a good memory, learn from the people: practise remembering things in a way as other people do.

  1. (1) Someone can't have a good memory if ________.

A . he can't read or write B . he doesn't use his memory C . his parents haven't a good memory D . he doesn't use his arms or legs for some time
  2. (2) If you do not use your arms or legs for some time, ______.

A . you can't use them any more B . they will become stronger C . they become weak but they slowly become strong again D . they become weak and won't become strong until you use them again
  3. (3) Which of the following is TRUE ?

A . Your memory works in the different way as your arms or legs B . Your memory, like your arms or legs, becomes weak if you do not give it enough chance for practice C . Don't learn how to read and write if you want to have a better memory D . A good memory comes from less practice
  4. (4) Few people know that it is only ______ if a friend has a poor memory.

    A . his own fault B . his parents' fault C . his teachers' fault D . his grandmother's fault
  5. (5) The writer wants to tell us ________.

A . how to use our arms or legs B . how to read and write C . how to have a good memory D . how to learn from the people

"Sure," the shopkeeper said. But when she took the blue coat, there on the shelf behind all of the dark coats, hidden like a spring flower in winter darkness, there, as if by magic, was a pink coat.

"A pink coat!" Sarah cried. "I want the pink coat."

"That coat is smaller than the other ones," Papa said.

Sarah spoke up. "I'm small, too. Papa, please let me try it on, Mama? Please?"

"It wouldn't hurt to let her try it on," Mama said.

Without a word, the shopkeeper took the coat from the shelf and held it for Sarah.

"Ohhh!" Sarah said. The coat was smooth and shiny inside like her sister Sylvia's blouses. "Ahhh!"

Sarah backed away. No one was going to put her into a raincoat again. She wanted to be a flower.

"Sarah!" It was Papa. He came over to her. "You're old enough to know that you can't always have your own way," he said seriously.

"Wise and true," said the shopkeeper.

Sarah took off the pink coat, slowly.

"It is her colour, though," Mama said.

"Ahh," said the shopkeeper. "Anyone can see how the pink of the coat brings out the roses in her face."

Papa looked thoughtful for a moment.

"We are lucky." continued Mama, "that it is only one little coat for Sarah and not also new coats for Sylvia and Susan and Sally."

Papa looked from the brown coat to the pink coat. "The cows will give milk soon enough," he said "And how can we let Sarah wear a brown coat when she looks like a flower in this one?"

Blue Lightning

Sally loved cars more than anything else. This spring she thought of building a go-kart to enter for the Go-Go Race. So she asked her dad for help.

"Well," he said. "How about this: you do some research first and then come back to me with a design. "

A week later, Sally brought her notes and drawings to Dad. She named her go-kart "Blue Lightning". Dad looked over her work, thinking. "Well, that's interesting," he said. "Have a try. Just build Blue Lightning as you've designed. "

Over three weekends of hard work, Sally turned her design into a real, working go-kart and painted it light blue. Dad asked her to take it for a test drive. Sally agreed.

After she did that, Sally drove back to Dad. "Well," she said. "Now I know why you wanted me to have a test drive. "

"Oh, do you?" he said. "Please share. "

"When I drove fast, there was a lot of push back," she said. "I think it's because of the lightning bolt (闪电) shape. "

    "Very good!" Dad said.

"So, why didn't you tell me about that problem in the first place?" Sally asked.

Dad laughed. "Where's the fun in that? If you give a man a fish, he'll eat for a day. But if you teach a man to fish, he'll eat for a lifetime. "

Sally said, "I see. Anyway, designing is half the fun !"

Dad smiled. "Good. Sometimes, learning happens during the process. We learn how to do something right by doing it a few times first and making mistakes along the way. "

That encouraged Sally and she worked even harder. When she showed Dad her new go-kart, he nodded with pride.

Finally came the race. Sally wasn't worried about whether she would win—in her mind, she had already won, by building something better than ever before.

"Oh, yes!" Simon said. Running downstairs, she already couldn't wait for school to be over. That afternoon, Simone rushed to Mrs. Grisman's apartment. Just then, she saw Deion, another kid who had just moved into the apartment recently, bringing his dog Brutus in from his walk.

After nearly 60 years of lighting our homes and streets, halogen bulbs (卤素灯泡)were stopped to be used across Europe in September, 2018. Instead, people should start to use LEDs. LEDs consume (消耗)five times less energy (能量)than halogen bulbs and using LEDs would stop more than 15 million tons of carbon emissions a year. There were some ideas about the change.

Philips, a lighting producer, thought that people would save about £112 a year from the change because LEDs could work for longer hours than halogens and LEDs use less power.

However, there were people who disagreed with the change. Jonathan Bullock, a spokesman in the European Parliament told The Guardian, "It's not right to stop the use of halogen bulbs, because people will have to spend a lot of money buying expensive LED bulbs. Poor people will lose most from these kinds of changes. People should have the chance to choose their bulbs and we shouldn't make them change if they don't want to do it."

In fact, what he said seemed not to be a good reason. The price of each halogen bulb is often lower than that of an LED bulb. But halogen bulbs use more energy. They only last for two years but LEDs can be used for 15 to 20 years. Each British home has about 10 halogen bulbs and uses each bulb for around three hours a day.

  1. (1) Why were the halogen bulbs stopped in Europe?
A . Because they were too old to be used. B . Because they were too expensive. C . Because they used too much energy. D . Because they were not very bright.
  2. (2) According to Philips, how much money will a consumer save every month if he uses LED bulbs?
    A . About £9.3. B . About £ 11.2. C . About £112. D . About £ 124.
  3. (3) According to Jonathan Bullock, who might be the least willing (乐意) to buy new LED bulbs?
    A . Talented people. B . Poor people. C . Smart people. D . Young people.
  4. (4) What does the underlined word "that" refer to?
    A . The light. B . The answer. C . The energy. D . The price.
