We all have our favorite teachers—-those who seem truly interested in us. But what about teachers we don't know as well ( or even don't like much)? You can do lots of things to get a good relationship with your teacher.

    First, try to be a good student: go to class on time, finish all homework on time, be active in the class and ask questions often.

Second, show an interest in the subject. Obviously, your teachers are really interested in their subjects. Showing the teacher that you care—even if you're not good at math or French—-sends the message that you are a dedicated(专注的) student.

It's good for their health. And exercise helps make them tired, so they sleep better at night. You may like to run. If you do, take care of your feet. Make sure you have the right shoes. Some people like to run on roads, but they must watch out for cars.

    Walking is a good exercise. You may take a long walk in the park. It's more fun if you don't go alone. Go with a friend. The two of you may have a great time.

    Some people like to swim. But others don't like to go into the water. If you like this kind of exercise, make sure that someone is watching you. You must always take care when you are in the water. Jumping a rope (跳绳) or riding a bike is also good exercise. There are many other exercises. Find out what you like. You may need help at first. Some people often do exercise, and they can help you. Do exercise every day, and you will know what it makes you feel.

    Some people think that success is only for those with talent or those who grow up in the right family, and others believe that success mostly comes down to luck. I'm not going to say luck, talent, and circumstances don't come into play because they do. Some people are born into the right family while others are born with great intelligence, and that's just the reality of how life is.

    However, to succeed in life, one first needs to set a goal and then make it more practical. And, besides that, in order to get really good at something, one needs to spend at least 10,000 hours studying and practising. To become great at certain things, it'll require even more time, which most people won't put in.

    This is a big reason why many successful people advise you to do something you love. If you don't enjoy what you do, it is going to feel like unbearable pain and will likely make you give up before you ever become good at it.

    When you see people exhibiting some great skills or having achieved great success, you know that they have put in a huge part of their life to get there. It's sometimes easy to think they got lucky or they were born with some unusual talent, but thinking that way does you no good, and there's a huge chance that you're wrong anyway.

    No matter what you do, if you want to become great at it, you need to work day in and day out, almost to the point of addiction, and over a long period of time. If you're not willing to put in the time and work, don't expect to receive any rewards. Hard work won't guarantee you the level of success you may want, but it will guarantee that you will become really good at whatever it is you put all that work into.

    Artificial intelligence (AI) (人工智能）is the ability of a computer program or a machine to think and learn. It is also a field of study that tries to make computers "smart". John McCarthy, a scientist, came up with the name "artificial intelligence" in 1955. Many things such as learning and problem solving can be done by computers, though not in the same way as we do.

    An unusual goal of AI research is to create computer programs that can learn, solve problems, and think logically(逻辑地）. At present we use the term Al for successfully understanding human speech, recognizing(识别）human faces, operating self-driving cars and competing in some game systems like Chess and AlphGo（阿尔法狗）. Some people also consider AI a danger to humans if it develops too quickly. Professor Stephen Hawking (霍金), a well-known British scientist, was not for this kind of technology.

    Math is the basic language of AI. If we raise the standard in the learning of math, our students will be more likely to become successful AI designers in the future. We not only want bright students, but also need to attract average students and give them the math skills which are needed to change them into AI designers. Besides, a good knowledge of computer science is also necessary for AI designing.

    Scientists hope to create creative and emotional AI which can possibly understand human feelings or create art. Many ways and tools have been tried to discover this fascinating field.

There are many reasons why involvement in after-school activities is beneficial. The most important point is that sports, clubs and regular meetings give students time to

enjoy each other's company（陪伴）and start up friendships. These activities also allow teenagers to follow their interests and to reduce stress. So in spite of (尽管)heavy schoolwork, students should keep on following their hobbies although it is very hard.

    Some students, on the other hand, choose the opposite way. They spend too much time on their hobbies that they are passionate(狂热的)about. Sometimes this passion helps students get recognition or prizes for their surprising talents, but generally speaking, it just makes one student different from the other.

    Schoolwork and interests are of different values, so one should never have to choose between study and extracurricular activities, unless he or she wants to. Each student should try to balance them, and your balance may differ from others'. Achieving this kind of balance is to find out what is important for you.

It completely depends on your personal preference.

Help Fight World Hunger

    What would you do if you wanted to help hungry people in the world but you didn't have billions of dollars? We asked some students for their ideas.

    Simon: If a friend would join me, I'd volunteer with an organization or foundation that works to fight world hunger. Maybe we could travel to another country to help people. It would be a good education about other countries for us, too.

    Gwen: I would get photos of children who don't have enough to eat. I would put the photos on a website with this question: What would you do if these chidren were yours? I would also list the names of organizations that help fight world hunger. Then I would send the link for the website to people and ask them to donate money to help these hungry children.

    Ray: I think we can also ask celebrities for help. They are famous people and usually have a lot of fans. If they can stand out and call on people to do the thing, I believe that many people will follow them. I'd write a letter to a celebrity and ask the celebrity to come and talk at our school. I'd ask all the students in our school to sign the letter. People would pay money to go to the talk, and we would use the money to help fight hunger.

    These are great ideas—but send us yours! What could you do to help hungry people?

Don't be shy!

    If you think you are too shy and want to be a little outgoing, try the following rules. You can make it.

. Just let people know that you are a shy kid. When they know that, they will understand you better. This also helps you feel more at home when talking with others.

. People will think you are friendly and easy to talk to. Remember that most of us would like to talk to friendly people and we will stay away from an angry-looking face.

. If you find it hard to do, say something nice about people around you. Think about how great you feel when someone says something nice to you. Doesn't it make you want to keep talking to those people?

. Think more about ways to enjoy the party or the game. Don't worry about your looks or care if people like you.

. Each time after you say "Hi" or smile at someone for the first time, say to yourself "You did it! "or it could be something bigger, like buying yourself an ice-cream

Is there a connection between music and language?

According to recent studies, the answer is yes. Music improves certain language abilities in the brain. Here, let's look at two examples.

A recent study by researcher Kraus shows that playing a musical instrument can improve a person's hearing ability. In his study, two groups of people listened to a person talking in a noisy room. The people in the first group were musicians, while those in the second group had no musical training. The musicians were able to hear the talking person more clearly. Musicians hear better because they learn to pay attention to certain sounds. Think about violinists in an orchestra(交响乐团). When the violinists play with the group, they hear their own instrument and many others, too. But the violinists must concentrate on what they are playing, and pay no attention to the other sounds. In this way, musicians are able to focus on certain sounds, even in a room with lots of noise.

Schlaug, a doctor at Harvard Medical School, works with stroke(中风) patients. Because of their illness, these people cannot say their names, addresses, or other information normally. However, they can still sing. Schlaug was surprised to find that singing words helped his patients to speak. Why does it work? Schlaug isn't sure. Music seems to make different parts of the brain work, including the broken parts. This might help patients to use that part of the brain again. Music improves attention, memory, listening skills, and language abilities. It can even help sick people get better.

Playing an instrument or singing can help us do better in school and keep our brain sharp(敏锐的)a swe get older . Music is not only enjoyable, but also good for us in many other ways.

We are still going on journeys, still travelling but in a slightly more sedate manner. Because of the time we live in, we are rediscovering the simple and healthful joys of walking. In the countryside, through forests, down hills or along ancient trails, this manner of travel has become increasingly popular in the country in the aftermath of COVID­19.

From May 1 to Oct.31 in 2020, more than 140，000 travelers signed up for trips organized by Youxiake, a Hangzhou­based tour operator that invites people to explore nature by foot. This represents a 9. 3 percent increase over the same period last year. And the number of hikers marching along its routes has doubled, according to Huang Bowei, marketing director of the company. Not surprisingly, more tourists are choosing to explore domestic(国内的) routes, according to Huang.

"After the outbreak, people became more aware of keeping fit，" Huang says. "Hiking or trekking in nature enables us to breathe fresh air, gives the whole body a workout and keeps us away from the crowds in urban public places, which fits perfectly with the requirement for social distancing. That's why these domestic hiking or trekking routes have seen more visitors this year."

Zhang Peng started spending hours on the trail in 2013 when his startup business went through some tough times. "I felt that exposure to nature and physical exhaustion(疲惫) helped me release my stress at that time，" Zhang recalls.

"Trekking has been integrated into my lifestyle，" he says. "It's a liberating experience to enjoy the calmness in the wilderness. And the exhausting climb makes me feel the vigor(活力) of life."

People have found that even 18-month-old children can help with chores. When parents tell these children to look at the paper on the floor, the kids will pick1up. However, some parents think childhood(童年) is just for playing, so they don't ask their children to do2. But other parents believe that doing chores is3for kids. Doing chores helps to4children's independence. Children learn to help, share and care about others5doing chores. Many kids help parents to do chores such as washing the dishes, cleaning the floors and taking out the rubbish in the house. In return(回报), some kids get money or other rewards (奖赏) from their parents, such as 20 minutes to play computer games.

But some people do not think that kids should get rewards for doing chores. One of them is Susie Walton. She believes that if kids get rewards, they will think that they don't have to do anything unless they get something in return. For example, kids won't sweep the floor if they see it is dirty. But they will clean the floor if their parents reward them for it." A home is a living space for everyone in the family." Susie said." It's important for kids to know that we should do our part in keeping our home clean."

Other people have different ideas. They believe that money or other rewards can motivate kids to do more chores. It also teaches them that they need to work to make money. Now, there are also apps that encourage(鼓励) kids to do chores. The apps give kids points and small gifts that can be used either online or in the real world. Kids can change their points for real rewards, such as time to play video games or a trip to the mall. "Kids need positive (积极的) power to make them do chores," says Chris Bergman.

Many people are ordering take-out while they are stuck at home because of the novel coronavirus. You might wonder whether the virus can be transmitted(传播) through food.

So far, there is no showing of the virus (spread) through food or food packaging. "We don't really have any showing that food or its packaging is  source for getting sick," Benjamin Chapman, a professor at North Carolina State University, US, told Live Science.

    The virus can be transmitted by people touching a contaminated (被污染的) surface and then touching one's nose, mouth or eyes.  that's not the main way for the virus to be transmitted. As we know, there are differences between Western culture and Chinese culture. Let's look at some words about animals and plants. Most expressions in Chinese about the dog, for example," a homeless dog", " a mad dog", " a running dog" and "a dog catching a mouse", have bad meanings. In English, people use the dog to describe good actions. For example," you are a lucky dog" means you are a lucky person. Andevery dog has its day" means each person has good luck sometimes.

But in Western culture, " cat" is often used to describe a woman who is unkind. There are many other examples of how "cat" is used differently as well.

People think the rose stands for love, peace, courage and friendship. And the rose is the national flowers of England, America and many other countries.

Have you ever stayed in a hotel? Most Chinese hotels often provide guests with things like disposable toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo and slippers. Starting from June, some hotels in Beijing will no longer provide guests with these disposables. They want to ask people to use less disposable things.

Many disposable things are made of plastic. People throw them away after only using them once. It is a waste of natural resources and is very bad for the environment. Do you know, one Chinese person makes as much as 400kg of waste a year! Most of that waste comes from disposable things. In Beijing, people throw away about 19,000 tons of plastic bags and 1,320 tons of plastic lunch bowls every year! Plastic can take between 100 and 400 years to break down. So the less plastic we throw out, the better. So, wherever you travel, bring your own things and use them again and again.

Back at home and school, you can also do something to make our world a better place. Try to do these things in your daily life: Use cloth shopping bags, not plastic ones. After using a plastic bag, wash it out and let it dry. Then you can use it over and over again. Do not use paper cups. At your school canteen, use your own bowl and chopsticks instead of disposable ones.
