We all have our favorite teachers—-those who seem truly interested in us. But what about teachers we don't know as well ( or even don't like much)? You can do lots of things to get a good relationship with your teacher.

First, try to be a good student: go to class on time, finish all homework on time, be active in the class and ask questions often.

Second, show an interest in the subject. Obviously, your teachers are really interested in their subjects. Showing the teacher that you care—even if you're not good at math or French—-sends the message that you are a dedicated(专注的) student.

Third, you can also often have a talk with your teacher when he is free. Use this time to get extra help, ask questions, talk about the subject, or talk about your progress in class. You may be surprised to learn that your teacher is a bit more relaxed one-on-one than when lecturing(讲课) in front of the whole class.

  1. (1) According to the passage, which is not mentioned about a good student?

A . Going to class on time. B . Finishing all homework on time. C . Giving a gift to the teacher. D . Asking questions often.
  2. (2) The teacher will think you are dedicated student if _________.

A . you have the class every day B . you show an interest in the subject C . you ask the teacher for help D . you're not good at math or French
  3. (3) The underlined word”one-on-one” means ________ in Chinese.

    A . 一个接一个 B . 面对面 C . 手拉手 D . 肩并肩
  4. (4) The passage mainly talks about _________.

A . how to be a good student B . how to develop good teacher-student relationships C . how to show an interest in the subject D . how to have a talk with your teacher

Some people think that success is only for those with talent or those who grow up in the right family, and others believe that success mostly comes down to luck. I'm not going to say luck, talent, and circumstances don't come into play because they do. Some people are born into the right family while others are born with great intelligence, and that's just the reality of how life is.

However, to succeed in life, one first needs to set a goal and then make it more practical. And, besides that, in order to get really good at something, one needs to spend at least 10,000 hours studying and practising. To become great at certain things, it'll require even more time, which most people won't put in.

This is a big reason why many successful people advise you to do something you love. If you don't enjoy what you do, it is going to feel like unbearable pain and will likely make you give up before you ever become good at it.

When you see people exhibiting some great skills or having achieved great success, you know that they have put in a huge part of their life to get there. It's sometimes easy to think they got lucky or they were born with some unusual talent, but thinking that way does you no good, and there's a huge chance that you're wrong anyway.

No matter what you do, if you want to become great at it, you need to work day in and day out, almost to the point of addiction, and over a long period of time. If you're not willing to put in the time and work, don't expect to receive any rewards. Hard work won't guarantee you the level of success you may want, but it will guarantee that you will become really good at whatever it is you put all that work into.

  1. (1) Paragraph 1 mainly talks about _______.
A . the reasons for success B . the meaning of success C . the standards of success D . the importance of success
  2. (2) The underlined word that refers to _______.
A . putting in more time B . succeeding in life C . being good at something D . setting a practical goal
  3. (3) Successful people suggest doing what one loves because _______.
A . work makes him feel pain B . he is likely to enjoy his work C . he gives up his work easily D . it takes a lot of time to succeed
  4. (4) What is the main purpose of the passage?
A . To explain that luck or talent leads to success. B . To tell us that one cannot succeed without time and practice. C . To show us that having a goal is the main reason to success. D . To describe that successful people like to show their great skills.

Artificial intelligence (AI) (人工智能)is the ability of a computer program or a machine to think and learn. It is also a field of study that tries to make computers "smart". John McCarthy, a scientist, came up with the name "artificial intelligence" in 1955. Many things such as learning and problem solving can be done by computers, though not in the same way as we do.

An unusual goal of AI research is to create computer programs that can learn, solve problems, and think logically(逻辑地). At present we use the term Al for successfully understanding human speech, recognizing(识别)human faces, operating self-driving cars and competing in some game systems like Chess and AlphGo(阿尔法狗). Some people also consider AI a danger to humans if it develops too quickly. Professor Stephen Hawking (霍金), a well-known British scientist, was not for this kind of technology.

Math is the basic language of AI. If we raise the standard in the learning of math, our students will be more likely to become successful AI designers in the future. We not only want bright students, but also need to attract average students and give them the math skills which are needed to change them into AI designers. Besides, a good knowledge of computer science is also necessary for AI designing.

Scientists hope to create creative and emotional AI which can possibly understand human feelings or create art. Many ways and tools have been tried to discover this fascinating field.

  1. (1) From Paragraph 1, we know that        .
A . all problems can be solved by AI B . machines with AI can think and learn C . AI has been around for only 60 years. D . AI works in the same way as humans
  2. (2) The underlined word "it" in Paragraph 2 refers to(指的是)

Most students have experienced those school nights when they try to stay awake while doing homework. However, is homework the only reason why students stay up too late? For many, the answer may be factors(因素)such as electronics and technology, yet for others, the reply focuses on the balance

between schoolwork and extracurricular(课外的)activities.

Most students grow up developing some type of hobby. Whether it is playing baseball on the weekends, or joining a chess club after school, taking part in extracurricular activities is a large part of students' daily routines. However, as schoolwork and pressure increase in high school, many students argue that extracurricular activities must fall by the wayside because they are not needed, or not so important." High school is a time when you're supposed to explore what you love, "Samantha Luk, a high school student, said. When it comes to setting a timetable, however, Luk said she was often under pressure to give more importance to study. This thought of giving up personal interests for study is common among many students. They find it challenging to prove whether developing the interests is advantageous.

As a cross-country runner, journalism fan and violin lover, I disagree with those who decrease the importance of after-school activities. There are many reasons why involvement in after-school activities is beneficial. The most important point is that sports, clubs and regular meetings give students time to

enjoy each other's company(陪伴)and start up friendships. These activities also allow teenagers to follow their interests and to reduce stress. So in spite of (尽管)heavy schoolwork, students should keep on following their hobbies although it is very hard.

Some students, on the other hand, choose the opposite way. They spend too much time on their hobbies that they are passionate(狂热的)about. Sometimes this passion helps students get recognition or prizes for their surprising talents, but generally speaking, it just makes one student different from the other.

Schoolwork and interests are of different values, so one should never have to choose between study and extracurricular activities, unless he or she wants to. Each student should try to balance them, and your balance may differ from others'. Achieving this kind of balance is to find out what is important for you.

It completely depends on your personal preference.

  1. (1) From what Samantha Luk said, we know that     .
A . she was good at setting a timetable B . she often stayed up studying at night C . she spent a lot of time on her hobbies D . she put her study before her interests
  2. (2) The writer probably agrees that     .
A . surprising talents can help students succeed B . after-school activities are necessary and important C . students should choose either study or their interests D . students need to develop hobbies different from others'
  3. (3) What might be the best title for the passage?
A . Managing Your Time Wisely B . Living a Relaxing School Life C . Developing Different Interests D . Discovering Your Own Balance

Help Fight World Hunger

What would you do if you wanted to help hungry people in the world but you didn't have billions of dollars? We asked some students for their ideas.

Simon: If a friend would join me, I'd volunteer with an organization or foundation that works to fight world hunger. Maybe we could travel to another country to help people. It would be a good education about other countries for us, too.

Gwen: I would get photos of children who don't have enough to eat. I would put the photos on a website with this question: What would you do if these chidren were yours? I would also list the names of organizations that help fight world hunger. Then I would send the link for the website to people and ask them to donate money to help these hungry children.

Ray: I think we can also ask celebrities for help. They are famous people and usually have a lot of fans. If they can stand out and call on people to do the thing, I believe that many people will follow them. I'd write a letter to a celebrity and ask the celebrity to come and talk at our school. I'd ask all the students in our school to sign the letter. People would pay money to go to the talk, and we would use the money to help fight hunger.

Is there a connection between music and language?

According to recent studies, the answer is yes. Music improves certain language abilities in the brain. Here, let's look at two examples.

A recent study by researcher Kraus shows that playing a musical instrument can improve a person's hearing ability. In his study, two groups of people listened to a person talking in a noisy room. The people in the first group were musicians, while those in the second group had no musical training. The musicians were able to hear the talking person more clearly. Musicians hear better because they learn to pay attention to certain sounds. Think about violinists in an orchestra(交响乐团). When the violinists play with the group, they hear their own instrument and many others, too. But the violinists must concentrate on what they are playing, and pay no attention to the other sounds. In this way, musicians are able to focus on certain sounds, even in a room with lots of noise.

Schlaug, a doctor at Harvard Medical School, works with stroke(中风) patients. Because of their illness, these people cannot say their names, addresses, or other information normally. However, they can still sing. Schlaug was surprised to find that singing words helped his patients to speak. Why does it work? Schlaug isn't sure. Music seems to make different parts of the brain work, including the broken parts. This might help patients to use that part of the brain again. Music improves attention, memory, listening skills, and language abilities. It can even help sick people get better.

Playing an instrument or singing can help us do better in school and keep our brain sharp(敏锐的)a swe get older . Music is not only enjoyable, but also good for us in many other ways.

Many kids help parents to do chores such as washing the dishes, cleaning the floors and taking out the rubbish in the house. In return(回报), some kids get money or other rewards (奖赏) from their parents, such as 20 minutes to play computer games.

But some people do not think that kids should get rewards for doing chores. One of them is Susie Walton. She believes that if kids get rewards, they will think that they don't have to do anything unless they get something in return. For example, kids won't sweep the floor if they see it is dirty. But they will clean the floor if their parents reward them for it." A home is a living space for everyone in the family." Susie said." It's important for kids to know that we should do our part in keeping our home clean."

Other people have different ideas. They believe that money or other rewards can motivate kids to do more chores. It also teaches them that they need to work to make money. Now, there are also apps that encourage(鼓励) kids to do chores. The apps give kids points and small gifts that can be used either online or in the real world. Kids can change their points for real rewards, such as time to play video games or a trip to the mall. "Kids need positive (积极的) power to make them do chores," says Chris Bergman.

What do you think? Should kids be rewarded for doing chores? Or should kids help out around their homes without getting anything in return? Write a 200-word email to 123@timeforkids.com.

The virus can be transmitted by people touching a contaminated (被污染的) surface and then touching one's nose, mouth or eyes.  that's not the main way for the virus to be transmitted. (virus), unlike bacteria, live a lot (short) outside the body, according to Stephen Baker, a professor from the University of Cambridge. They will die off before they can reproduce. They can also (kill) by high temperatures.

Even if food is contaminated, it will end up in your stomach. It's the place  the coronavirus prefers to be in. Chapman said it's hard for the virus(live) in your stomach.

Still, to stay on the safe side, remember to clean packages  wet cloth and then wash your hands (proper).

Lisa, France

Our regular greeting is kissing on each other's faces, also between people who have only just met. We often shake hands at work. The lifestyle expert Philippe says, "Simply looking into a person's eyes is good enough now." Maybe it helps, I'm not quite sure.

Simon, UAE

We are asked to stop the traditional nose-to-nose greeting. The experts also say that we shouldn't shake hands any more or kiss. We are suggested to wave only. I'm sure it can reduce the risk but I'm afraid we won't keep close relationship one day.

We share chimarrao(马黛茶)among a group of close friends. The tea is passed around in a cup with a metal straw(吸管)and everyone takes turns drinking from it. But the government has announced that we shouldn't share straws to drink the tea. Is it necessary?

These days, a video has become popular showing three friends meeting, hands in their pockets and two of them are wearing masks, tapping(轻叩)their feet against each other as a greeting. Simple and funny! We shake hands traditionally.

As we know, there are differences between Western culture and Chinese culture. Let's look at some words about animals and plants. Most expressions in Chinese about the dog, for example," a homeless dog", " a mad dog", " a running dog" and "a dog catching a mouse", have bad meanings. In English, people use the dog to describe good actions. For example," you are a lucky dog" means you are a lucky person. Andevery dog has its day" means each person has good luck sometimes.

But in Western culture, " cat" is often used to describe a woman who is unkind. There are many other examples of how "cat" is used differently as well.

People think the rose stands for love, peace, courage and friendship. And the rose is the national flowers of England, America and many other countries.

We can learn about many differences in cultures by comparing how some words are used.

A. However, Chinese love cats very much.

B. Westerners love roses very much, while Chinese like peonies (牡丹).

C. We can see differences when we pay attention to the way words are used.

D. We can see similarities when we pay attention to the way words are used.

E. The words about plants and animals are used in good or bad ways in different cultures.

F. The rose is regarded as a symbol of love in both China and some Western countries.

G. But in Western countries, dogs are considered to be honest and good friends of humans.

Have you ever stayed in a hotel? Most Chinese hotels often provide guests with things like disposable toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo and slippers. Many guests like the idea because they don't have to bring their own. But, if you travel to Beijing, remember to bring your own things. Starting from June, some hotels in Beijing will no longer provide guests with these disposables. They want to ask people to use less disposable things.

Many disposable things are made of plastic. People throw them away after only using them once. It is a waste of natural resources and is very bad for the environment. Do you know, one Chinese person makes as much as 400kg of waste a year! Most of that waste comes from disposable things. In Beijing, people throw away about 19,000 tons of plastic bags and 1,320 tons of plastic lunch bowls every year! Plastic can take between 100 and 400 years to break down. So the less plastic we throw out, the better. So, wherever you travel, bring your own things and use them again and again.

Back at home and school, you can also do something to make our world a better place. Try to do these things in your daily life: Use cloth shopping bags, not plastic ones. After using a plastic bag, wash it out and let it dry. Then you can use it over and over again. Do not use paper cups. At your school canteen, use your own bowl and chopsticks instead of disposable ones.

  1. (1) Why do many hotels provide guests with some disposable things?
A . Let their guests be convenient during their travelling.   B . Hope their guests use less disposable things. C . Wish their guests to save money.        D . Want their guests to use more disposable things.

A . Use shopping bags made of plastic. B . Do not throw away paper cups. C . Use disposable plates, bowls and chopsticks. D . Do not forget to reuse daily necessities.

A . people don't like disposable things at all   B . we can't use paper or plastic bowls at school
C . we should use less plastic things and protect our environment   D . hotels won't provide disposable things because they want to save money
