I think it is safe to say that snakes are not popular among most people. It would be hard to find a person who is neutral (中立的), or simply doesn't care one way or the other. What I wonder is why something even without legs causes such great fear.

Snakes are quite useful, but that doesn't seem to matter. Snakes help control the population of mice. Without snakes, perhaps we would find mice everywhere. Most of us, however, would rather see a mouse than a snake.

The poison argument (毒性的争论) is a strong one. Some snakes are poisonous, and this causes people's death. However, the poisonous snakes are only a small number. We can't say all the snakes are bad just because of a few dangerous ones.

And what do we do with the people who really like snakes? They like snakes even more strongly than we dislike them. These people learn about them, find them out, and watch them carefully. Why? The only reason I can think of is that these people are open-minded. They are able to put aside differences and welcome the snake as a friend.

Whatever the reason for our like or dislike, snakes do something good in the circle of life. They would prefer to be left alone, and that is what we should do. If you're lucky, you might not run across more than a few of them in a lifetime. That would be fine with most of us.

  1. (1) How does the writer describe the appearance of snakes?

A . Something even without legs.   B . Something not popular among people. C . A person who is neutral.  D . A person who cares about nothing.
  2. (2) Which of the following shows that most people dislike snakes?

A . They welcome snakes as their best friends. B . They would rather see a mouse than a snake. C . They wonder why snakes can cause great fear. D . They learn about snakes and watch them carefully.
  3. (3)  Although some snakes are poisonous, ______.

A . they cause many people's death B . they control the population of mice C . they are not dangerous to people D . they are only a small number
  4. (4)  People who really like snakes are open-minded because they ______.

A . are able to put aside differences B . think all the snakes are poisonous C . are able to deal with poisonous snakes D . take part in the poison argument
  5. (5) The last paragraph seems to tell us that the writer ______.

A . dislikes snakes   B . has the best luck       C . loves snakes   D . prefers to be left alone

Did you know that 7 out of 10 students have cheated at least once in the past year? Did you know that 50 percent of those students have cheated more than twice? This shocking data is from a recent survey of 9,000 U.S. high school students.

Incredibly, teachers may even be encouraging their students to cheat! Last year at a school in Detroit, some teachers were found to have provided their students with answers to statewide standard tests. Students at the school told police that they were promised pizza and money if they cheated on the test. Similar reports at several schools in San Diego country have prompted an investigation by the Education Department. A student at a local high school says she sees students cheating on almost every test, and the teachers don't do anything about it. In response to the claims of school-assisted cheating, the head of the National Association of School Principals said that while cheating should never be accepted, it showed the pressure that schools were under. "Because school funding is now decided by students' test performance, there is incredible pressure on school to raise marks in any way they can."

But schools are not the main problem. Many students claim that they're tempted to cheat because of peer pressure and intense competition to get top grades. Many kids also say that their parents are setting a bad example by cheating on income taxes, lying about age to pay lower admission prices, or cheating their way out of speeding tickets. They are sending a message to their kids that it is okay to cheat and lie.

So, what can be done? In our school's math classes, each student has different problems on their test papers, so it is useless to look at someone else's answers. Teachers could also randomly mix the problems throughout the page. Another solution is for adults to lower their expectations. Chances are that students believe cheating is the only way to meet unreasonably high expectations. Perhaps it is time for parents and teachers to seriously examine whether higher test results are important enough to encourage cheating.

  1. (1) What does the writer think of the levels of cheating in American schools?
A . It is an extremely serious problem. B . It is no worse than other countries. C . He expresses no clear opinion.    D . It is mainly the fault of local school.
  2. (2) Which of the following causes of cheating is NOT mentioned?
    A . Pressure from others. B . Too much work. C . Strong competition. D . School funding.
  3. (3) Why are some schools ignoring their students cheating in America, according to the passage?
A . Because schools will get better students. B . Because teachers will then receive a higher salary. C . Because schools will get more government money. D . Because schools fear parents will be very angry.
  4. (4) According to the 3rd paragraph , how are parents encouraging their children to cheat?
A . By putting too much pressure on their children to succeed. B . By criticising their children too much when they fail. C . By urging them directly to be dishonest. D . By failing to behave honestly themselves.
  5. (5) In the last paragraph the writer _________.
A . offers possible solutions to the problem B . describes the causes of the problem C . outlines the results of the student cheating D . suggests some of the reasons for cheating

You might eat dinner together as a family or you may all sit in the living room and watch TV, but you might not talk much. So a family meeting is necessary. If you have a busy family, a weekly meeting is a good idea. You can talk about a problem or make a plan in the meeting.

Having family meetings is a good way to improve(改善)communication among all family members. Everyone who lives in the home should be encouraged to join in the family meeting. That includes(包括)not only the nuclear family, but also any relative (亲戚)that lives in the house, such as grandparents or cousins.

Everyone in the meeting should get some time to talk. If some people don't want to talk, just ask them about the best thing that happened to them that day. It might help start the conversation(交谈).

You also need to make some simple rules for your meetings. " Only one person talks at a time" or" No smart phone use during meetings" may make everyone stay respectful(尊重人的). You can use your first meeting to make a few simple rules that everyone agrees on. If your kids have trouble waiting their turn to talk, you can find a fun way to let them know that only one person talks at a time. Use a pen or a ball to show that it's your turn to talk.     You may not realize it but you are doing much more than just studying when you are at school. School is also the place where you learn to get on well with people. But this is not always easy. What can you do if you just don't like one of your classmates?

If you discover (发现) that you have problems getting on with your classmates or friends, the most important thing to learn is tolerance. Tolerance is the ability to realize and respect the differences in others. We cannot change the way that other people do, so it is important to learn to live happily with them.

Pro (professional) gaming is certainly big business. In 2017, there were more than 3,000 gaming competitions and over 10,000 professional players worldwide.     What it takes

Becoming a professional is not just about being good at playing games- it also takes a lot of hard work. Some pro gamers practice for fourteen hours a day. "You need to spend much time and put all your efforts to it", says ex-gamer George

    Not all fun and games

It can be a difficult job as well. Stress is a big problem for gamers. Tiredness is another, and injuries(受伤) are common. Top player Hai Lam had wrist(手腕) problems after years of pro gaming. Careers(生涯)are short, and many gamers retire (退休) before they are 30 and try to find another job.

A . Pro gaming isn't all fun and games. B . The career as a pro gamer doesn't last long. C . Being a pro gamer is a good choice for teenagers. D . Being a pro gamer is an easy way to make money.

Are you often in mind-wandering, enjoying the state of having nothing to do, or just standing and staring? Did you dream to get good grades and devote yourself to the tasks for a few days, however, your dream fell to zero as a TV play attracted you some day?

Do we need to have a dream? The founder of Wal -Mart, Sam Walton, says high expectation is the key to everything. The important thing in life is to have a great aim and the determination to achieve it, J. W. Goethe, the famous German poet and dramatist says. Successful people suggest that those who believe in the beauty of their dreams tend to have more self-motivation (自我激励)to keep on trying and enjoying the beauty of life.

Thomas Edison dreamed to light the world by the power of electricity. He tried over 2,000 different materials before he was able to create a market light bulb. It's hard for many of us to imagine spending so much time and energy in exploring a possibility, which is most likely to come to a dead end but for Edison, who sticked to his dream, it was just an enjoyable process. As Edison says, the most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time.

Helena, a 17-year-old girl, dreamed to build the magnificent sculpture (雕塑) in the world. She devoted herself to observing faces around her and making sculptures. She was woken up by her dream every morning rather than her alarm clock. She said she became passionate (有热情的) out of her dream, which kept her going through any difficulties and found plea sure in it.

You can benefit a lot from your dream, but do you know the behavior that is necessary to fulfill your dream? You have a dream and you truthfully want good grades. However, you can't help playing on the smart phone and let go your homework. Or you rush through it so that you can get back to the smart phone. This is the case when the present-desire to play on your smart phone beats the will to reach the future goal, which is called immediate gratification. If you always behave like this, you may lose the chance to meet with your dream.

Your dream can inspire you. It can give you motivation to work hard. It helps you to focus on a path so that you are moving forward. Meanwhile, you need to set a long-term goal and work for it. The key to dream is concentrating on small wins, which gradually lead to genuine confidence. You will enjoy the whole process of realizing your dream as well as involving yourself into the passion of the coming life.

  1. (1) The writer talks about Helena and Edison to _____.
A . suggest good ways of realizing your dream B . show effects of dream on self-motivation C . stress the great differences between them D . share the experiences of their success
  2. (2) The expression immediate gratification in Paragraph 5 probably means        .
A . enjoying pleasures here and now B . following dreams without delay C . becoming creative in a flash D . avoiding failure all the time
  3. (3) According to the passage, the writer may agree that    .
A . it's necessary for you to deal with difficulties quickly B . it's better for you to work hard than to have passion C . setting big goals will make differences for your life D . having your dream can help you take things light
  4. (4) Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A . Keep Calm and Dream On B . Dream Bigger, Think Deeper C . Dream a Dream and Step by Step D . Follow Your Heart, Live Your Dream

Eating out is such a pleasure ― the food, the wine, the joy of having it all brought to you by someone else ― that it's a pity to ruin (毁掉) the experience by sharing it with other people.

‚Well, I do like visiting restaurants with friends. But dining out alone has its own very special advantages. For a start you can give all your attention to the food. There's nothing worse than having to show your own opinion on school league tables or Sanchez's move to Manchester United, and listen to everyone else's opinions, when all you really want is to enjoy the dinner.

ƒA second great thing about eating out alone is the chance to connect food with one of life's other true pleasures: reading. You have to plan this carefully: Indian or Chinese restaurants are the best ― you need food you can eat with just one hand, leaving the other free to hold your reading material.

„But perhaps the biggest advantage of a table for one is the chance it gives to people ― watching. Restaurants and the different reasons for visiting them ― first date, business meeting, night out with friends ― produce surprising and different human behavior. Will the man selling his business idea get any joy out of his possible investor (投资者)? Will the married couple think of anything to say to each other before their main courses arrive?

…This "human zoo" part of eating out alone is one of the reasons I hate to be famous: everyone would be watching you, so you wouldn't be able to watch them. The snooker player Steve Davis says this was one of the strangest consequences (后果) of becoming well-known: he got very worried about his eating in public, almost to the level of doubting whether he was "doing it right."

†So next time you're considering your eating out choices, remember the advice of the businessman Nubar Gulbenkian: "The best number for a dinner party is two ― myself and a super head waiter."

  1. (1) What does the text mainly talk about?
A . The suggestions about dining out. B . The reasons for eating out alone. C . The trouble with eating in public. D . The fear of making dining choices.
  2. (2) What is the best part of dining out alone?
A . One can just stare at the food. B . One can enjoy reading while eating. C . One is likely to come across famous people. D . One is given the chance to watch other diners.
  3. (3) In paragraph 5, the writer mostly wants to tell the readers that __________.
A . Steve Davis cared too much about table manners B . famous people are always the center of attention C . being famous may ruin the joy of eating out alone D . being watched seems better than watching others
  4. (4) Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?

What do you think of the "new" hat I made for my sister? It used to be my mum's sweater.

New uses for old clothing

Nowadays, we're more wasteful than ever-buying, using and throwing things away without thinking about the costs. We need to start living more responsibly- but how? One answer is to upcycle (再生利用) .

If you're like me, you might already make soil for gardening from food waste and use empty paper boxes as storage space. Did you know you can apply (应用) the same way to old clothing? You just need imagination!

I started upcycling clothing. Making new things out of old clothes is the best way to mix my talent and my interest. Do you upcycle? If so, what new things have you made? If not, why not give it a try?

Terry B  Posted at 9:08 a. m. on 11th February 2018

Why don't you give your old clothes to people in need? I even give away the most expensive things I don't wear anymore. So I can help the environment while giving something useful to people in need.

Gina Posted at 9:28 a. m. on 11th February 2018 early

Good point! I'm talking about only the oldest clothing in your room — the clothes that are too old to be worn by others. The same idea goes for food waste at restaurants and supermarkets. Before upcycling food that can still be eaten, for example, using it to make soil, we should give it to those in need.

Is there an important exam right around the corner? You might be starting to fear, thinking that there's no way for you to get a good grade because of the little time left to study. This is something all students may worry about. But you should accept the fact that you have to take the exam no matter how much you want to avoid it.

Thankfully, there are several ways to help you get at least a passing grade. You may have a try.

all the things. Sleep isn't for the weak, but for the wise. Your brain needs enough rest. After a good night's sleep, you'll perform much better in the morning.

    Don't fear

Once the test paper is in front of you, don't be afraid. Take a deep breath and start the exam with confidence. Just like when you were reviewing, put away the problems you' re having difficulty in and come back to them later. If you have time left, go over everything to make sure you haven't made any careless mistakes.

If you think you are too shy and want to be a little bit braver, just try the following things.

Tell people you are shy. There is no need to hide it. When they get to know you are a shy kid, they will understand you better. This also helps you feel more comfortable in talks.

When you smile, people think you are friendly and easy to talk with. Remember that other people have feelings, too; and most people will stay away from an angry-looking face.

If you find it hard to start a conversation, say something, nice about people around you. Think about how great you feel when someone says something nice to you. Doesn't it make you want to keep talking to that person?

Think more about ways to enjoy parties or games. Don't waste time worrying about your look or whether people like you or not. You will become relaxed and find it's not so hard to talk with others.
