I think it is safe to say that snakes are not popular among most people. It would be hard to find a person who is neutral (中立的), or simply doesn't care one way or the other. What I wonder is why something even without legs causes such great fear.
Snakes are quite useful, but that doesn't seem to matter. Snakes help control the population of mice. Without snakes, perhaps we would find mice everywhere. Most of us, however, would rather see a mouse than a snake.
The poison argument (毒性的争论) is a strong one. Some snakes are poisonous, and this causes people's death. However, the poisonous snakes are only a small number. We can't say all the snakes are bad just because of a few dangerous ones.
And what do we do with the people who really like snakes? They like snakes even more strongly than we dislike them. These people learn about them, find them out, and watch them carefully. Why? The only reason I can think of is that these people are open-minded. They are able to put aside differences and welcome the snake as a friend.
Whatever the reason for our like or dislike, snakes do something good in the circle of life. They would prefer to be left alone, and that is what we should do. If you're lucky, you might not run across more than a few of them in a lifetime. That would be fine with most of us.
In America, there are chores(杂活) for children of different ages. American people think that it's important to tell children their duty in the family.
Ages 4-6 | Ages 6-12 | Ages 13 and Up |

Did you know that 11,000 people die every day from smoking? Did you know that people die every day from breathing smoke1other people's cigarettes?
Tobacco smoke has 43 ingredients that may2cancer. If smokers had learned these 3when they were young, they probably would never have started smoking.
Most smokers try4first cigarette when they are teenagers. Often, they start smoking because they think that it makes them look more5. Sometimes they start smoking because their friends tell them that it's cool. If teenagers are told that half of them will die before the age of 65 from smoking cigarettes, how can they still think it's cool to smoke?
One of the biggest problems is cigarette advertisements. Tobacco companies6tell the truth to teenagers about cigarettes. After watching the advertisements on TV or looking at the posters in which people ride horses or play in a rock band, young people often think that smoking7be cool.
Sadly, cigarettes are very difficult to8once a person has started smoking. Most teenagers start smoking9they are influenced by friends or cigarettes advertisements. And often, the teenagers regret the decision to start smoking later in life.
Teenagers need to know10bad cigarettes are for their health. If they are told that cigarettes kill more people than guns do, they probably will never start smoking.
Did you know that 7 out of 10 students have cheated at least once in the past year? Did you know that 50 percent of those students have cheated more than twice? This shocking data is from a recent survey of 9,000 U.S. high school students.
Incredibly, teachers may even be encouraging their students to cheat! Last year at a school in Detroit, some teachers were found to have provided their students with answers to statewide standard tests. Students at the school told police that they were promised pizza and money if they cheated on the test. Similar reports at several schools in San Diego country have prompted an investigation by the Education Department. A student at a local high school says she sees students cheating on almost every test, and the teachers don't do anything about it. In response to the claims of school-assisted cheating, the head of the National Association of School Principals said that while cheating should never be accepted, it showed the pressure that schools were under. "Because school funding is now decided by students' test performance, there is incredible pressure on school to raise marks in any way they can."
But schools are not the main problem. Many students claim that they're tempted to cheat because of peer pressure and intense competition to get top grades. Many kids also say that their parents are setting a bad example by cheating on income taxes, lying about age to pay lower admission prices, or cheating their way out of speeding tickets. They are sending a message to their kids that it is okay to cheat and lie.
So, what can be done? In our school's math classes, each student has different problems on their test papers, so it is useless to look at someone else's answers. Teachers could also randomly mix the problems throughout the page. Another solution is for adults to lower their expectations. Chances are that students believe cheating is the only way to meet unreasonably high expectations. Perhaps it is time for parents and teachers to seriously examine whether higher test results are important enough to encourage cheating.
You might eat dinner together as a family or you may all sit in the living room and watch TV, but you might not talk much. So a family meeting is necessary. If you have a busy family, a weekly meeting is a good idea. You can talk about a problem or make a plan in the meeting.
Having family meetings is a good way to improve(改善)communication among all family members. Everyone who lives in the home should be encouraged to join in the family meeting. That includes(包括)not only the nuclear family, but also any relative (亲戚)that lives in the house, such as grandparents or cousins.
Everyone in the meeting should get some time to talk. If some people don't want to talk, just ask them about the best thing that happened to them that day. It might help start the conversation(交谈).
You also need to make some simple rules for your meetings. " Only one person talks at a time" or" No smart phone use during meetings" may make everyone stay respectful(尊重人的). You can use your first meeting to make a few simple rules that everyone agrees on. If your kids have trouble waiting their turn to talk, you can find a fun way to let them know that only one person talks at a time. Use a pen or a ball to show that it's your turn to talk. When you finish speaking, you pass the pen or the ball to someone else.
You may not realize it but you are doing much more than just studying when you are at school. School is also the place where you learn to get on well with people. But this is not always easy. What can you do if you just don't like one of your classmates?
If you discover (发现) that you have problems getting on with your classmates or friends, the most important thing to learn is tolerance. Tolerance is the ability to realize and respect the differences in others. We cannot change the way that other people do, so it is important to learn to live happily with them.
Tolerance will make everyone get on better with each other. Getting to know someone may help you understand why he does things differently. Something different does not exactly mean that it is bad. Tolerance teaches us to keep a temperate (温和的) and open mind.
You need to remember an old saying, "________." If you tolerate something, it does not mean that you have to like it. No one is asking you to change who you are or what you believe in. Tolerance is just that you should respect the differences in others and not try to make them change.
It is important to practice tolerance, because it will make everyone's life easier. Learn to accept people for their different abilities and interests. The world is very different, and practicing tolerance in your own school and city can help make a difference.
Playing video games and getting money for it seems like a dream job for many of today's teenagers. But is it all fun and games?
Big business
Pro (professional) gaming is certainly big business. In 2017, there were more than 3,000 gaming competitions and over 10,000 professional players worldwide. A large number of people watch their competitions online, and successful gamers can get more than 1,000,000 dollars from prize money and ads. The industry is clearly thriving.
What it takes
Becoming a professional is not just about being good at playing games- it also takes a lot of hard work. Some pro gamers practice for fourteen hours a day. "You need to spend much time and put all your efforts to it", says ex-gamer George
Not all fun and games
It can be a difficult job as well. Stress is a big problem for gamers. Tiredness is another, and injuries(受伤) are common. Top player Hai Lam had wrist(手腕) problems after years of pro gaming. Careers(生涯)are short, and many gamers retire (退休) before they are 30 and try to find another job.
However, the bad points probably won't change the dreams of many teenage gamers. And angry parents are still likely to hear the excuse, "But I'm just practicing for my future job!"
Are you often in mind-wandering, enjoying the state of having nothing to do, or just standing and staring? Did you dream to get good grades and devote yourself to the tasks for a few days, however, your dream fell to zero as a TV play attracted you some day?
Do we need to have a dream? The founder of Wal -Mart, Sam Walton, says high expectation is the key to everything. The important thing in life is to have a great aim and the determination to achieve it, J. W. Goethe, the famous German poet and dramatist says. Successful people suggest that those who believe in the beauty of their dreams tend to have more self-motivation (自我激励)to keep on trying and enjoying the beauty of life.
Thomas Edison dreamed to light the world by the power of electricity. He tried over 2,000 different materials before he was able to create a market light bulb. It's hard for many of us to imagine spending so much time and energy in exploring a possibility, which is most likely to come to a dead end but for Edison, who sticked to his dream, it was just an enjoyable process. As Edison says, the most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time.
Helena, a 17-year-old girl, dreamed to build the magnificent sculpture (雕塑) in the world. She devoted herself to observing faces around her and making sculptures. She was woken up by her dream every morning rather than her alarm clock. She said she became passionate (有热情的) out of her dream, which kept her going through any difficulties and found plea sure in it.
You can benefit a lot from your dream, but do you know the behavior that is necessary to fulfill your dream? You have a dream and you truthfully want good grades. However, you can't help playing on the smart phone and let go your homework. Or you rush through it so that you can get back to the smart phone. This is the case when the present-desire to play on your smart phone beats the will to reach the future goal, which is called immediate gratification. If you always behave like this, you may lose the chance to meet with your dream.
Your dream can inspire you. It can give you motivation to work hard. It helps you to focus on a path so that you are moving forward. Meanwhile, you need to set a long-term goal and work for it. The key to dream is concentrating on small wins, which gradually lead to genuine confidence. You will enjoy the whole process of realizing your dream as well as involving yourself into the passion of the coming life.
Eating out is such a pleasure ― the food, the wine, the joy of having it all brought to you by someone else ― that it's a pity to ruin (毁掉) the experience by sharing it with other people.
Well, I do like visiting restaurants with friends. But dining out alone has its own very special advantages. For a start you can give all your attention to the food. There's nothing worse than having to show your own opinion on school league tables or Sanchez's move to Manchester United, and listen to everyone else's opinions, when all you really want is to enjoy the dinner.
A second great thing about eating out alone is the chance to connect food with one of life's other true pleasures: reading. You have to plan this carefully: Indian or Chinese restaurants are the best ― you need food you can eat with just one hand, leaving the other free to hold your reading material.
But perhaps the biggest advantage of a table for one is the chance it gives to people ― watching. Restaurants and the different reasons for visiting them ― first date, business meeting, night out with friends ― produce surprising and different human behavior. Will the man selling his business idea get any joy out of his possible investor (投资者)? Will the married couple think of anything to say to each other before their main courses arrive?
This "human zoo" part of eating out alone is one of the reasons I hate to be famous: everyone would be watching you, so you wouldn't be able to watch them. The snooker player Steve Davis says this was one of the strangest consequences (后果) of becoming well-known: he got very worried about his eating in public, almost to the level of doubting whether he was "doing it right."
So next time you're considering your eating out choices, remember the advice of the businessman Nubar Gulbenkian: "The best number for a dinner party is two ― myself and a super head waiter."

New uses for old clothing Nowadays, we're more wasteful than ever-buying, using and throwing things away without thinking about the costs. We need to start living more responsibly- but how? One answer is to upcycle (再生利用) . If you're like me, you might already make soil for gardening from food waste and use empty paper boxes as storage space. Did you know you can apply (应用) the same way to old clothing? You just need imagination! I started upcycling clothing. Making new things out of old clothes is the best way to mix my talent and my interest. Do you upcycle? If so, what new things have you made? If not, why not give it a try? |
|
|
Why don't you give your old clothes to people in need? I even give away the most expensive things I don't wear anymore. So I can help the environment while giving something useful to people in need.
Good point! I'm talking about only the oldest clothing in your room — the clothes that are too old to be worn by others. The same idea goes for food waste at restaurants and supermarkets. Before upcycling food that can still be eaten, for example, using it to make soil, we should give it to those in need. |
|

I've made shopping bags out of T-shirts and dog toys out of socks. Upcycling clothing is a fun hobby, but the most important thing is that it makes me feel like I'm living less wastefully. |

Every day, more things come into our lives. We get new things in our houses, on our calendars, and in our minds. They start to control us and we may be in great trouble. That's a bad way to live.
Minimalism(极简主义) is a better, simpler way of life. Then, we can focus on things we really care about and try to do them better.
If you only own things that you really need, you'll enjoy life more. You'll value yourself more than material things you simply enjoy.

Is there an important exam right around the corner? You might be starting to fear, thinking that there's no way for you to get a good grade because of the little time left to study. This is something all students may worry about. But you should accept the fact that you have to take the exam no matter how much you want to avoid it.
Thankfully, there are several ways to help you get at least a passing grade. You may have a try.
Get yourself together
This might sounds like silly advice, but it's actually the most important. When you fear, you may lose control over your thoughts and actions. Even if you try to study, perhaps you won't get anything in your head.
Enjoy enough sleep
It's unbelievable many students have little sleep each night. That's not something to be proud of, especially if you're sleeping so little and still failing to do
all the things. Sleep isn't for the weak, but for the wise. Your brain needs enough rest. After a good night's sleep, you'll perform much better in the morning.
Don't fear
Once the test paper is in front of you, don't be afraid. Take a deep breath and start the exam with confidence. Just like when you were reviewing, put away the problems you' re having difficulty in and come back to them later. If you have time left, go over everything to make sure you haven't made any careless mistakes.
In the COVID-19 pandemic (新冠肺炎疫情), people across the world are paying more attention to the health and happiness of each other. Some are trying to send messages of love and care in different ways.
In China, an international communication program was started to send support to other countries. It has collected eighty-five letters written by students in Beijing to young people in pandemic-stricken (疫情重创下的) countries. They are full of love and care. These letters were made into a collection of short videos called "A Letter to Friends". They were shown in the form of sand painting.
It is reported that many hospitals abroad refuse all visitors to patients in order to stop the spread of COVID-19. Patients feel lonely and worried, so some hospitals have created "Online Wish Wall" for the public. People are welcome to post their messages there to express their love and care. So far, the hospitals have received a great deal of encouragement from the public. The messages have helped the patients to cheer up without their loved ones by their side.
The COVID-19 pandemic may make life difficult for people, but love and care will make life better.
When we buy a house, we all want to have nice neighbors, because most of us think that it is helpful to live with some good neighbors. But what kind of neighbor is good? The answers are different from people to people. Here are my answers.
First, it is very important to respect (尊敬) each other. If our neighbors try to know more about our life, how will we feel? He or she may also talk with others about our life. Do you want to live with him or her any more? The answer is “No". We will feel very sad to have this kind of neighbor and move away quickly. .
Next, a good neighbor is always ready to give us a hand when we need him or her. For example, if we are not at home, our good neighbors will watch our house for us.
Finally, a good neighbor should love the environment (环境). He or she never puts rubbish (垃圾) here and there. Good neighbors should keep the place clean, because the good environment can make us comfortable and happy.
I think we all should learn to be good neighbors, and I also hope everyone will have good neighbors and live a happy life.

Communication is the process by which we exchange information between people. To communicate well is to understand and to be understood. Communication can be successful only when both the sender and the receiver understand the same information.
Good communication skills are keys to success in life, work and relationships. Without effective(有效的) communication, a message can turn into error, misunderstanding, or even disaster.
In today's highly informational and technological environment, it has become more important to have good communication skills. Here are some important steps to communicate effectively.
Know what you want to say and why. Understand clearly the purpose of your message. Know to whom you are communicating and why.
How will you say it? We all know that it's not always what you say, but how you say it, that matters. Begin by making eye contact. You show trust and confidence when you look at others in the eyes when you speak. Second, pay attention to your body language, since it can say so much more than your words. By standing with your arms easily at your side, you tell others that you are open to hearing what they have to say.
Communication is a two-way street. After you have said what you have to say, stop and listen. Practice your listening skills. Be considerate of others who are talking. Listen carefully and never cut them off.
Are there any rules in your home? I a few family rules. For example, I should talk to my family in a friendly I can't break things or run inside. Rules are because they help us take care of ourselves, each other, and our things.
Sometimes however, I will forget to the rules. One day, I played with my brother in the living room. I ran so that I broke my mom's favorite vase (花瓶). I said sorry to her and her I wouldn't do that again. But my mom was very angry didn't talk to me for three days.
When I break the . I am breaking the trust (信任)of family. So now I will stop to take a rest when I want to break a rule. I may listen to music, read a book, make something or simply go to sleep. This helps cool down and behave well.
Now I truly know the meaning rules. They are not there to take away our freedom, but to keep everyone safe and to keep our home safe, too.
