CHARACTERS—Max and Emma
SCENE 1—Dining hall, Sunville Middle School
EMMA: Max! Hi! Mr. Sosa says our band(乐队) can play in the talent show!
MAX: Cool! I'll tell Felipe to meet us in the music room after school for a practice.
EMMA: Umm. I wonder if it's a good idea to have Felipe in our hand …
MAX: (With his mouth open) Of course it is! He's really good at the keyboard.
EMMA: Really? He seems more interested in maths than anything else.
MAX: Well, he says maths and music are connected. He says that learning to read music and playing keyboard is like learning maths formulas(公式).
EMMA: Then I'm sure he's good at music, too. With Felipe on keyboard, we'll really have an edge over the other groups.

The biggest secret about inventing is that anybody can do it! Perhaps this sounds crazy, but it's true. Maybe you have the wrong idea about inventing, so read on to discover the truth.
★Wrong idea No. 1: An invention has to be something completely new.
Inventing means creating something "new", but the idea could come from something that already exists (存在). The Wright Brothers, for example, got the idea for building a "flying machine" from watching birds.
★Wrong idea No. 2: Inventors are born, not made.
There are a lot of factors (因素) that make inventions possible. Take Mozart for example. He was born with a talent for musical composition. But other factors were also important for his creativity. His father was a music teacher, and Mozart practised for hours every day, from the time he was four years old. Thomas Edison said that being an inventor was "99% hard work and 1% inspiration"!
Very successful creators don't give up when they get something wrong. As one inventor said, "A failure was the right answer to the wrong question."
★Wrong idea No. 3: Inventors are always old people.
Don't believe that you can't invent anything when you are young. Here are two examples of young inventors: Louis Braille went blind when he was a child. When he was fifteen, he invented a system of reading and writing for blind people that is still used in most countries today.
As a young man, George Nissen was watching some artists performing in a show. He watched how they fell into the safety net and then jumped back up again. This gave him an idea, and he invented the trampoline.
The tiger is the largest wild cat in the world. The big cat weighs about 363 kilograms and is about two metres long.
Tigers wait until it's dark, then they go out to find their food. When a tiger sees an animal, it moves very quietly, then jumps on the animal to kill it. It can take several days for a tiger to finish eating its kill. The tiger stops eating until it has had enough, and then it covers the dead animal with leaves. Later, when the tiger is hungry again, it comes back to eat more.
Tigers are different from others in the cat family: they like water, and they often jump into rivers to swim.
Some tigers live in very cold places--in parts of North Korea, Eastern Russia and Northeast China. Other tigers live in warm places一in India and parts of southeast of Asia.
All tigers are in danger. People kill them to use their skin for clothes and their bones for medicine. In addition, there is also less and less land for tigers to live on. But now people know that tigers are in danger and have made plans to protect them.

We wash vegetables before cooking them. And we wash our hands before we start eating. That is because we know washing can clean our food and keep diseases(疾病) away. But, do you see cows, dogs or cats wash their food? No, they don't.
But there is one kind of animal called raccoons(浣熊). I think they're interesting. They like to wash their food before eating. And raccoons don't eat any food if they can't find water around. Even if they eat, they don't look happy about it. We don't know why they wash the food. It is not because they like clean things. Because they also wash the food in the dirty(脏的) water!
In fact, they find most of their food in the dirty water. They are very lazy. They usually sleep all day. They live in places where there is water and trees. Usually, they build home in the trees.
They are gray or brown in colour. They have big ears and small eyes. They are good looking. So I think they look very lovely.
The streets where you live are special places
Every day brings friendly faces
Children to play with, adults you know
Who watch and help you as you grow.
So what can you do to keep it this way
A place that's happy and safe to play?
How can you help to keep it so good
For those who live in your____________?
Some older people can feel left out
When they need a hand just to get about.
You could help them use the internet
Or do their shopping if it's not done yet.
Some children might have problems in class
Get stressed when there are exams to pass.
You could help them understand a tricky part
Or show them a way to make a start.
Some streets get messy with litter around
Where people just throw things on the ground.
You and your friends could make a bin
For people to put rubbish in.
We could do lots, let's start today!
Visit a nursing home, sweep leaves away
Collect old clothes for a charity store.
There are so many ways to help others more.
If I want you to give me a high—five, can you do it? If you search your pocket for five yuan, it will make others laugh(大笑)!I am not asking for your money, but your fingers. It's a kind of body language.
It's very popular in America, and lots of young Chinese people also like doing that.
How do you do a high—five? It's very easy. First, put one hand up in the air. Then hit (碰)someone's hand also high in the air. When people have something happy, they always use the body language. For example, a man wins a lottery (彩票). If a football team wins a game, the players will also give high—fives to everyone around.
There are different stories about how the high—five began. One story is like this: A very long time ago, some Americans saw a group of animals. They were so excited and they put their hands up into the air.
They just wanted to hit each other. In another story, some short men met some tall men, so they had to put their hands up high to shake hands with them. The high—five was born.
Next time, when you meet an American, give a friendly high—five and make your new friend feel right at home.

You'll learn a lot about scientific research and other stuff that requires critical and analytical(分析的) thinking. You'll also get the chance to participate in science fairs!
F. Photography Club: A lot of people are interested in photography. This is obvious because they love sharing pictures online. Thus, photography clubs became one of the top options when choosing a club. If you love snapping photos and want to learn more from other students with similar interests, then this club is for you.

Everybody has a favorite TV show. Some people like to watch cartoons, other people like to watch soap operas(连续剧). Now reality TV shows(电视真人秀)are very popular in many countries. Reality TV shows have no actors. The stars are real people like you and me. One of the most famous ones is "Survivor(《幸存者》)". In "Survivor", sixteen people try to win one million dollars. For ten weeks they live together far away from home. Their life is very hard. They have to sleep outside and find their own food. There are many games and tests. If they fail a test, they might have to leave the show. "Survivor" is very popular. In America, 51 million people watched the last show to see who would win.
Is it good to watch a lot of TV? In Britain, most children watch more than three hours every day, and 66 percent of children have a TV in their bedroom. Some people think that watching too much TV is unhealthy for children because it stops them doing exercise. They say that children should read books or go outside and play. They also think that watching cartoons that show a lot of violence(暴力)is bad for young people.
But now some scientists say that watching TV can be good. They found that children who watch TV before an exam can get higher grades. This is because TV helps them to relax before the exam. It also exercises their brains, but remember: NOT TOO MUCH!

Dear Ann,
How are you?
Do you like your school? I like my school a lot. My teachers are very nice. Some of my subjects are fun, but some of them are boring. I like English and Art, but I don't like Maths.
My brother likes his school too. He likes Maths, but he doesn't like English. His favourite class is PE. He likes it very much. Does your sister like her school? What subjects do you like?
Yours,
Emma
Dear Emma,
It's nice to hear from you. I'm fine, thanks. Yes, I like my school, but my sister doesn't. She doesn't like homework! I like Music and English, but I don't like PE. I like all of my teachers. Miss Lee is my favourite teacher. She teaches Music. Her classes are always fun. Do you have a favourite teacher?
Yours,
Ann
A good friend is always around you. Do you have problems making friends? These will help you.
Wear clean clothes. It will let others like you and go to you often.
Smile. It means that you are friendly. When you find someone is the friend you want, just smile and say "hi".
Talk first. Ask them some funny questions ana listen to them carefully. It's a bad idea to keep saying nothing. When you say a lot about yourself, they will learn about you better.
Meet the friends of your new friends. Your new friends must also have their other friends. It's a great chance to know more friends. Eat lunch win them or play with them after school. Then you'll make more friends.
Play around and be open. If your friends are in a club or do sports, why not join them? Invite them to your house. or go swimming with them, and try to look for any reason to be with them. But never do anything if they say "no"!

When we were scared, sad and helpless, you gave us courage, warmth and hopes. When we had to stay at home to keep away from the illness, you, workers, helped us buy living things; Leaving your children behind, you worked in the neighborhood every day, you never complained but smiled the whole day. When we needed all kinds of materials, you, drivers, drove them there without thinking twice; Running on the streets, between the cities, you made sure things went well as usual. | When we had coughs or fevers, you, ▲ , tried your best to save our lives; Looking after the patients in the hospital day and night, you never gave up until the sick got well. There are many people doing jobs in silence; There are many people giving hands without telling their names. Thanks for your hard work and selflessness. You're the heroes of the times. You're the most beautiful in our heart. We love you! |
A few students are giving their opinions about what a good friend should be like.
Kelly says, "I think a good friend should be honest (诚实的). That's more important than any other thing. And it is the start of a real friendship. If one isn't honest, he may lose his friends' trust.
Tom answers, "I think a good friend has to be generous. Here being generous doesn't mean he has to give his friends money or clothes. It means that he should share his ideas and feelings with his friends. In fact, his friends can know him better in this way.
Amy replies, "In my opinion, a good friend should understand his friends. When there is something wrong between him and his friends, he must put himself in his friends' place and think more for his friends.
Lucy says, "A good friend should be playful. Friends can play with us. They can make us laugh when we are sad or lonely.
Judy thinks good friends should be helpful. A good friend always has your back. When you are in trouble, he has no problem being there.
How much money do you spend every week? Write it down on your notebook. Then you will know how to manage your money. It's best to plan to spend money buying useful things. So you can put your money into good use.
Invite your friends to your house instead of going out to a restaurant. You can enjoy home—made food and play games together. It's an excellent way to have fun, and at a lower cost.
Try to save most of your pocket money. Some people don't mind their pocket money. That's wrong. If you save just 5 yuan a week, you can have lots of money put in a bank. With the pocket money you save, you can do lots of meaningful things.
Instead of buying tea or coffee with a meal, drink water. It is widely known that water is the most popular drink in the world. It is good for your health. Drinking water makes you full of energy and it also saves money.
Walking is a great way to get some exercise and save money. This is a lifestyle that costs nothing. You'd better choose to walk rather than drive as much as possible. Doing this, not only can you feel good about enjoying the fresh air, but you can spend time exercising a lot.
Choose the best topic from A to F according to the meaning of the passage.

A. Drink water more. C. Plan what you spend. E. Save your pocket money. |
When most people think of Disney cartoons, they think of Donald Duck.
Donald Duck is a white duck with a yellow-orange bill, legs and feet. He usually wears a sailor shirt, cap and a red or black bow tie, but no trousers at all.
Donald Duck was born on June 9, 1934. He is very funny and facetious. He always makes people laugh. Children around the world all like him.
He first appears (出现) in the cartoon The Wise Little Hen. The little hen works very hard. But Donald Duck and his friend Peter Pig do not want to work. Then the little hen gives them a lesson. She tells them that work is important.
Donald is like a little man in a big world. He has a good heart. He wants to help others. But things always go wrong for him. He doesn't like it. He gets angry easily. Then his girlfriend Daisy comes to help him. So he tries it again. He thinks there will be a good way to do things, but he does not know the way. Dear Peter, How are you? I'm fine. I have some exciting news! I have moved to a new house in the countryside of Canada. It is very nice and quiet here. The house has five bedrooms, three bathrooms and a large kitchen. But I love it much better than my old house in the city. The weather is very cold here. Yesterday, I went skiing (滑雪) with my friends Tom and Payton. Tom is an excellent skier but Payton and I are still in the beginner group. We had great fun and after that, we drank hot chocolate beside an open fire. Your mum tells me that you will visit me during the summer holiday. I can't wait to see you and show you around my new house. Which room would you like to sleep in? One of the guestrooms looks out onto (朝向) a lake, while the other one has lovely views of the woods (树林) and mountains. Can you give me a hand, please? Can you bring me some photos of Hong Kong? I miss my friends and family there. See you soon! Yours, Uncle Sam |
Daniel, Sandy and Simon are in the lab.
Simon: Let's do an experiment. I fill a jar(罐子) with water. I cover the top with a piece of cardboard(纸板) and hold it there. Then I turn the jar upside down and take my hand off the cardboard. Can you guess what will happen?
Daniel: I think the floor will get wet. We should do this experiment outside, Simon.
Sandy: I think the cardboard will hold the water.
Daniel: I don't think so.
Sandy: You think the water will pour out, Daniel. I think the water will stay in the jar. Let's do the experiment to test whose opinion is correct.
Simon: Good idea, Sandy. That is called the scientific method.
Sandy: I am so sure of my opinion that Simon can do the experiment over your head and I know you won't get wet.
Daniel: Well, let's try.
Simon: Are you ready, Daniel?
Daniel: No! Wait! (He puts on a raincoat and sits down.) Now I think I'm ready.
Sandy: Simon, take your hand off the cardboard.
Daniel: No!
(Daniel closes his eyes tightly(紧紧地), and Simon takes his hand off the cardboard. The water stays in the jar.)
Sandy: See, Daniel!
Daniel: How is that possible?
Simon: The force(力) of the air keeps the water in the jar. It is strong enough to hold the water.
Daniel: Wow!
Simon: So what have we discovered?
Sandy: We have discovered the air pressure(压力) helps the cardboard hold the water in the jar.
Simon: Right. What do you conclude, Daniel?
Daniel: I conclude that air is stronger than I thought.
① Put a piece of cardboard over the jar.
② Fill the glass jar with water.
③ Take the hand off the cardboard.
④ Turn the glass jar over quickly and hold the hand on the cardboard.
