It Is Never Too Early to Think—and Communicate—like a Scientist
Who is a scientist and what is his job? A chemist doing experiments? A geologist out studying rocks? When most people think about science, they imagine characters making discoveries or finding cures(治疗方法)for new diseases. However, these leave out an extremely important part of the scientific process: communicating一sharing the results of that work.
Imagine if someone discovered something important about a disease. Other scientists need to understand the work well enough to use these new developments to make even more discoveries in the future. The public, too, needs to understand how these discoveries might influence their lives. But none of this will be possible if the work is not shared. Being a scientist goes far beyond the moment of discovery.
Without clear communication, scientists would not be able to use the work that has already been done. So how do scientists tell others about the work that they have done? How do they make sure that everything that they share is as clear and correct as possible?
Researchers publish their work in scientific journals (期刊).These journals can be read by other researchers around the world. It is very important for these journals, and for the scientists who read them, to make sure that the research included is as correct as possible. In order to do that, articles given to scientific journals before publication first go through a process called peer review. Other scientists who do research in areas related to the work in an article are asked to read through it. Scientists also provide feedback to the writers. They bring up new questions the writer may not have considered, recognize limitations to the results being described, and also make sure that no mistakes were made during the process.
Frontiers for Young Minds is a scientific journal written for—and reviewed by young people. All of the articles in it are based on works already published in a peer reviewed scientific journal. However, while scientists are good at making sure that articles are understandable for other scientists, there are no better experts to make sure that something can be understood by young people than the young people themselves- By working together with an experts young reviewers read the article to see if any part of the article is hard to understands make it clear why the experiment was done in the way it was done) and check whether the figures (数据)clearly explain the point of the article.
Basically, these young reviewers learn to think like scientists. It is never too early to start! Ask questions, learn new things, and don't forget the importance of communicating your findings.

We use the Internet for many things: business, shopping, writing letters, talking to people, finding information and so on. Nowadays a new kind of English has grown on the Internet. There's no real word for it yet, so we'll call it e-talk.
People don't like typing too much. To save time, they turn phrases into a few letters (called acronyms).Acronyms are often used in chat rooms(聊天室). Some of them are:
BTW (by the way) BRB (be right back)
LOL(laughing out loud) IMO (in my opinion)
People also use many abbreviations (缩写). They are shortened forms of words. Some common abbreviations are:
info (information) purer (computer)
pic (picture) sec (second)
We usually don't see people when we talk on the Net, so people have new ways to show feelings. Most people use their keywords to draw “feelings”, such as:
:-) (happy) :)- (joking) :-( (sad) :-o (surprised)
These days, many forums (论坛) have picture feelings. For example:
(happy)
(sad)
(angry)
(cool)
There are even whole new words, like “newbies” (someone who is new on a chat board or forum). When you write something bad about someone else, it's called “flaming” the person.
It takes time for people to get used to e-talk. Also, different groups on the Net have their own special ways of communicating(交流). Newbies sometimes have to ask other people what they mean. As the Internet grows, e-talk will continue to grow and change.
We know the mosquito very well. Mosquitoes fly everywhere. They can be found almost all over the world, and there are more than 2.500 kinds of them.
No one likes the mosquito. But the mosquito may decide that she loves you, She? Yes, she. It's true that male mosquito doesn't bite and only the female mosquito bites because she needs blood to lay eggs(产卵). She is always looking for things or people she wants to bite (咬) . If she likes what she finds, she bites. But if she doesn't like your blood, she will turn to someone else for more delicious blood. Next time a mosquito bites you, just remember you are chosen. You're different from the others!
If the mosquito likes you, she lands on your body without letting you know. She bites you so quickly and quietly that you may not feel anything different. After she bites, you will have an itch (痒) on your body because she puts something from her mouth together with your blood. By the time the itching begins, she has flown away.
And then what happens? Well, after her delicious dinner, the mosquito feels tired. She just wants to find a place to have a good rest. There, on a leaf or a wall, she begins to lay eggs, hundreds of eggs.

cartoon about give him interesting |
I found an old box of my father's yesterday. It was really to discover something about my father's life as a child. He once told me about his hobbies as a child. He wrote to people from all over the world, and they sent letters back. As a result, he had a book of interesting stamps. People also him things from different countries, such as a silk fan from China, a little model car from Germany and some kangaroo from Australia. My father even kept the ticket from his first football match. The box made me think my hobby. I would keep my old picture books and toys and I'm sure my children would like them in the future. That would be great fun.
Language students often think they have memory(记忆) problems. They worry because they can't remember words. In fact, the problem usually isn't with their memory. The problem is with how they study. In my opinion, using a right way is the most important.
To remember words better, you need to understand how memory works. There are two kinds of memory: short-term and long-term. When you see, hear or read something, it goes first into short-term memory. But short-term memory lasts for only a few seconds, that means we will forget things soon in short-term memory. You will only remember something longer if it goes in to long-term memory. Your long-term memory is like a very big library with many, many books. And like a library, it's organized. When you put away(放好,储存) a book or memory, you can't just leave it anywhere. You have to choose a place where you can find it again.
How can you do this with vocabulary? The answer is to work with the word and think about the word in new ways. You can do this by writing new sentences with the word in it. Even better, you can invent a little story about the word, with people or places that you know. Another way is to make a picture in your mind with the word. For example, if the word is "height", you can think of the tallest person you know and try to guess his or her height. All of these activities are good ways to think about words. They make the meaning of words stronger in your long-term memory. And they give a way to find a word when you need it.
This is my idea about how to improve ways to remember words, and I hope it can help you.
It's reported that a high-speed railway opened on December 30th, 2019 between Beijing and Zhangjiakou, Hebei Province, construction (施工) of which started in April, 2016. According to China Railway (CR), the 174-km-long railway line, an important project for the 2022 Winter Olympic Games, will shorten the trip between the two host cities from over three hours to only 47 minutes.
It will be the world's first high-speed railway on which self-driving trains can reach a speed of up to 350 kilometers per hour. "Now, the drivers only need to push button and the system will independently speed up, slow down, stop and open the passenger doors," said Liu Chunyu, a high- speed train driver.
Known as China's first "intelligent high-speed railway line", the Beijing-Zhangjiakou line features not only self-driving, but also intelligent modules. "We want to connect the high-speed train with different new technologies, like cloud computing, big data and AI, making passengers feel at home," Zhang Bo, a researcher from China Academy of Railway Sciences, said. What's more, there is a mobile news center where passengers can watch live Olympic broadcasts on the train.
The line has 10 stations, five in Beijing and the others in Hebei Province, including one at the Badaling section of the Great Wall. All the stations are equipped (配备) with smart devices, robots and 5G networks for the convenience of passengers.
"Today, the line also begins to connect some cities in Inner Mongolia and Shanxi Province to the high-speed railway loop (环线) in Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei," said Zhu Dianping, an officer from China Railway Beijing Group. The line will finally connect Beijing with most parts of northwest China together.

Now, most countries around the world have some sorts of bread in their food culture. No matter what shape or taste it has, people need bread. It not only helps them to make a living but also to feel satisfied and comfortable. Maybe that is how the word "bread" got its slang meaning.
Bread means money in some English expressions. If you "make a lot of bread" at a job, your boss is paying you well. But if you are "out of bread", you do not have any way to pay for your bills. You are broke!
Even though "bread" above means "money", the word "breadwinner" does not mean someone who has won money in a competition. A "breadwinner" is a person who makes money for others. They are the ones who pay the bills in a family like your parents. So, we also call a breadwinner a "provider".
It would be not nice if someone "took the bread out of your mouth". But that does not mean they stole your sandwich while you were eating it. This expression means they took away your ability to make money or your way to make money. If your bread is taken out of your mouth, you could end up living by governments' help.
A "breadline" is a group of people asking for food from government. In the 1930s, during the economic depression(经济大萧条)in the United States, it was common to see hundreds of people in big cities waiting on breadlines. So, being "on the breadline" describes someone who depends on food donations to live.
And that's the end of today's Word Story. If you want to learn some other "bread" expressions, please listen to FM 88. 9 at 6:00 pm tomorrow. I am Anna Mateo. Bye!
If you have to describe yourself to someone else, what will you say? It can be difficult to see yourself from the outside, but knowing who you are, namely self-awareness, can help you understand feelings and make friendships closer
Self-awareness means having a good understanding of our own character, that is, having the ability to see ourselves clearly. If you're self-aware, you may know that you love playing an instrument because you do well in it, and music makes you happy, or that you prefer watching TV on your own because it helps you relax.
Knowing what you like and dislike, what you do well in and what you find difficult allows you to make better decisions about friendships, schoolwork and so on. You learn to trust your own feelings more, which builds confidence (信心). The World Health Organization says self-awareness is one of ten important life skills that help young people live happier, healthier lives. Being self-aware doesn't mean only thinking of yourself. By understanding your own feelings, you will better understand other people too.
How do you learn to be self-aware? It's a good way to ask questions. But ask yourself questions that start with "What" instead of "Why". So if you don't understand why you keep arguing with a friend, ask yourself what you disagree on instead of why you're arguing.
Learning to be more self-aware is a skill, which means you learn it as you grow. So be bold and try out new things, like playing a new sport or listening to different kinds of music. Don't be afraid to dislike something— discovering what you find difficult is a key part of learning more about yourself.

When we were scared, sad and helpless, you gave us courage, warmth and hopes. When we had to stay at home to keep away from the illness, you, workers, helped us buy living things; Leaving your children behind, you worked in the neighborhood every day, you never complained (抱怨) but smiled the whole day. When we needed all kinds of materials, you, drivers, drove them there without thinking twice; Running on the streets, between the cities, you made sure things went well as usual. |
When we had coughs or fevers, you, __________ tried your best to save our lives; Looking after the patients in the hospital day and night, you never gave up until the sick got well. There are many people doing jobs in silence; There are many people giving hands without telling their names. Thanks for your hard work and selflessness. You're the heroes of the times. You're the most beautiful in our hearts. We love you!

A. It is from Australia. It looks like a bear. It can climb the tree.
B. It lives in Africa. It is the tallest animal in the world.
C. It is the biggest animal on land. It has a very long nose.
D. It is big and strong. It can run fast. It's from Africa.
E. It is from China. It is white and black. It likes to eat bamboo.
Self-disciplined (自律的) people are not all outstanding (杰出的) people. But nearly all outstanding people are self-disciplined. Some of them read every day. Some of them never run late. The real difference between an outstanding person and an ordinary person is that an outstanding person can manage his or her time well. What people call self-discipline is in fact self-management.
One example is staying fit. Never underestimate (低估) someone who is in good shape. Anyone who has ever tried to lose weight knows that it's not easy. If someone is in good shape, it shows that he knows the principles (原则) of staying fit and is able to stick to a plan that uses these principles.
If someone is in good shape, it means that this person is good at managing themselves and their time.
It also shows that this person is able to work through challenges and can balance long-term goals with short-term goals.
So if someone is in good shape, they are more than just healthy.
First of all, set a goal and write down your reasons for wanting to achieve it. Create a list of all the things you need to do to achieve this goal and start to work on them one at a time. Only through self-discipline can you truly own your future.
|
A. That's where their success comes from. B. With self-discipline, small things in life will no longer trouble you. C. How do you learn self-management? D. It's even harder to avoid putting weight back on. E. Whether it is natural or learned through hard work, it is a great skill. |

I enjoyed that this book made me laugh at times and made me cry at other times. A good book will get you into the story and make you feel as though you are there. |
|
|
To be honest, the language is difficult for kids. But my friends told me I should read it as my little dog had just passed away and it would make me get out of my sadness. However, at the end it let me see how our life's journey is connected with our dog's life journey. |
|
|
There's nothing here that holds my interest. It focused most on people's problems and very little on the dog. |

Mrs. Li is over 70 years old. She has lived in Beijing all her life. A reporter interviewed her yesterday. The following are their questions and answers. |
|
② |
Reporter: What was your life like in the past? |
|
③ |
Mrs. Li: My family lived in a tiny house. My father was a postman, and he often worked twelve hours a day outside in the winter cold or in the summer heat. My mum was a farm girl before she met my father. She was a kind and loving mother. She didn't go out to work. There were five children in my family, and looking after us was more than a full-time job. |
|
④ |
The food we ate was simple. We could only eat meat once or twice a year. I wasn't sent to school because my family couldn't afford it. |
|
⑤ |
Reporter: How has life changed? |
|
⑥ |
Mrs. Li: Families have got smaller than they were in the past. The role of women has changed too. My daughter is really lucky. She has a good education. I'm happy that she can go to work even after getting married, but sometimes I feel lonely because she can't come to see me often. |
|
⑦ |
Transport and travel are easier today. When I was young, I went everywhere on foot or sometimes by bike. Now you can take the bus, the underground or a plane to travel. What I don't like is that there's so much more traffic. It's so difficult to cross the road. And, of course, we have television today and I really enjoy watching TV. But I hate some of the shows because they are too noisy for me. |
|
⑧ |
Generally speaking, I think life is better today. We eat better and we live longer. |
