Artificial intelligence (人工智能) , or AI in short, is the science of giving computers and machines ability to think and work like humans.

AI is rapidly catching up with the human ability to read faces. As a result, facial recognition (识别) is used a lot in the world. Chinese police use this technology to identify criminals (罪犯).It also checks the ID of ride-hailing (约车) drivers and lets people pay for things with a smile.

Most drivers may wave or nod at passers—by to let them cross the street, but self—driving cars don't have this ability. Carmakers are testing a light signal system to help them "speak" to humans. For example, if a driverless car is yielding (让路) , it will flash two white lights side to side. A rapidly flashing light tells passers-by that the car is about to speed up.

Service robots also show you how powerful AI is. Imagine this—you come back from school and your robot housekeeper is waiting for you at the door. After dinner, he teaches you to play the piano, just like a real music teacher. Such thoughts will soon happen in the real world.AI is so powerful that it can help human beings and even replace us in many jobs.

A. The system can show what self-driving cars will do.

B. AI scientists and engineers have made a lot of cool technologies.

C. Once they caught a criminal when he attended a concert.

D. In the future, more and more service robots will become good home helpers.

E. AI is also used in self-driving cars, which are believed to be the future of driving.

What will our life be like in 100 years? No one can truly know the answer, but we are sure that it will be very different from the life today. My brother David makes some predictions. Here are some of his ideas.

First, people will have less work to do. People will spend most of their time playing sports and traveling. So people will become stronger and healthier, and they will live longer as well.

Second, computers will control the cars and people don't need to drive. So there will be fewer and fewer traffic accidents on the road. Planes will be very popular, and most people would like to take a plane for their trips. As for robots, they'll be very popular with human beings. Every family will have a robot. Robots will do dangerous and heavy work for people.

Third, people will be able to live in the sea, on the moon or on other planets. The earth won't be crowded or noisy any more. So there will be much place for people to plant trees. There will be less pollution, and the air will become much fresher.

Finally, water shortage (短缺) will become one of the most serious problems. If we don't save water now, people will start wars for water in 100 years.

  2. (2) How will most people go traveling?
  3. (3) Why will robots be very popular with people?

"We are running out of space and the only places to go to are other worlds... Spreading out maybe the only thing that can save us from ourselves. I believe that humans need to leave Earth. "These are the words of the famous scientist Stephen Hawking, spoken at a science festival in 2017.

▲    Many experts also think that the only way for humans to go far into the future is to take control of other planets. Mars(火星) is one of the most attractive places humans have thought about. NASA, the United Arab Emirates, the private company SpaceX, and the organization Mars One all have plans to send humans there. "Either we spread out to other planets, or we risk dying out, "SpaceX founder Elon Musk said.

But not everyone agrees that moving to Mars or other planets is such a great plan. The most common argument against spreading is that it's just too expensive or dangerous. It will take a lot of money and other effort just to get people there, let alone set up a place for them to live. It's not even clear if humans could survive(生存) on Mars.

Maybe all the time and money people would pour into a Mars program would be better spent on more urgent ones here on Earth, like dealing with environmental protection. Some experts argue that dealing with a problem while staying here on Earth would be much easier and less expensive than surviving on a new planet.

What's more, moving to a new planet could harm or destroy(破坏) anything that already lives there. Mars seems deserted, but it could possibly have microbial life. Human visitors may destroy this life or change or damage the environment on Mars forever. Some feel it's too much of a risk to leave Earth.

  1. (1) We can learn from Hawking's words that he believed ________.
A . it was impossible for humans to find a proper place to live in space B . there was no life like humans living on any planet in deep space C . it was a good idea for humans to move to other planets in the future D . the earth would be destroyed completely if humans didn't spread out
  2. (2) Which of the following can be best put back into the blank"__▲__" in Para. 2?
A . Hawking's opinion became widely known. B . Hawking was not alone in this opinion. C . Hawking shared his opinion with the world. D . Hawking was a talent with unusual opinions.
  3. (3) What are people's reasons against (反对) spreading out to Mars?

①There will be more space rubbish if people live on Mars. ②It will cost too much money and effort to move to Mars. ③People will put themselves at risk if they leave the earth. ④The earth is a more comfortable place for humans to live.

⑤Humans may destroy the possible life and environment on Mars.

    A . ①②⑤ B . ①③④ C . ②③⑤ D . ②④⑤
  4. (4) The topic of the passage is ________.
A . fun places B . life in the future C . environment protection D . facts about the world

Businessman Muck says his company is building a large spaceship that may travel to the planet Mars(火星). The spaceship would be able to take as many as 100 people to Mars.

Muck said he wanted to set up a city on Mars. He wants human beings(人类) to live on more than one plane1. And he thinks the best way to do that is to first colonize(开拓殖民地)Mars. He wants many people to be able to travel to the red planet.

Muck says the new city on Mars would need about 1 million people. To get them there and to build a city, it would take between 40 and 100 years—or about 10, 000 flights with 100 people every flight. The trip would last between 80 and 150 days.

In fact, the key is making the fight cheap enough to almost anyone who wants to go. The very first flight will be quite expensive. But reusing(循环使用) spaceships will help to lower the cost for each person.

No date has been set for the first flight. But Muck said he wanted to send the first manned spaceship to Mars by 2024.

Space tourism(太空旅游业) is no longer a thing of science fiction. There are lots of companies planning to send people into space in the next few years. Space X is one of the most famous companies offering trips to space. So far, it has had over 100 customers. And in April, 2022, it sent 4 people into space. Now, what can space tourists do while in space? Here are some examples:

See the Earth from Space

Seeing the Earth from a distance has always been a dream. It gives most people a sense or both achievements and wonder (which is also why people climb the highest mountain and dive the deepest sea on the earth).

Stay in a Space Hotel

Hotels are directly connected with tourism, right? So if there's space tourism, there might also be space hotels up soon. Orion Span has been planning to send tourists to stay in their "space hotel", which would hold up to 6 people at a time.

Eat in Space

Eating is not easy in space. Even drinking water is difficult. Oh, a quick fact! You aren't allowed to burn(打嗝) in space! Bubbles will come out of your mouth and it might be dangerous to leave them around.

Visit the Moon and Other Planets

Space tourism companies are racing to launch(发射) the first tourist flight to the moon. Although there might be a long way to go before common people can step on the moon, we will probably see it in our lifetime. And who knows, maybe we'll even see hotels on the moon.

With the industry rapidly developing, space tourism is around the corner, and it might come much faster than we think. Who knows what the future might be like? Will you be the next person to travel to space?

  1. (1) How many people did Space X send into space in April, 2022?
    A . Three. B . Four. C . Five. D . Six.
  2. (2) Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A . Orion Span has built six space hotels. B . Eating in space is as easy as it is on the earth. C . Seeing the earth from space is meaningless for most people. D . It is possible for common people to visit the moon in the future.
