For those who want to make a tour to feel the real Beijing, the Hutongs and Siheyuans with a history of more than 2,000 years are the best places to visit.
Hutongs mean streets or small alleys (小巷) which are typical in Beijing. Most of the Hutongs were built during the Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties (from 1271 to 1911). The center of the city of Beijing was the royal palace—the Palace Museum.
A standard Siheyuan usually includes houses on its four sides, and the house which stands at the north end and faces the south is called the "main house" or the "bright house", the ones on both sides are called "side houses". All the Siheyuans, from their size and style, remind us about a clear truth—whether they belonged to (属于) normal people or the rich. Because not only ancient palaces but also government offices, temples (寺庙) were built basically on the pattern of the Siheyuan.
In recent years, Hutongs and Siheyuans are not only kinds of architecture (建筑) , but also work as a window. We can see the change of life in Beijing is very quick through them.
| Beijing Hutongs The Hutongs and Siheyuans are the best places forto visit. There were not so many Hutongsthe year of 1270 around the whole Beijing. |
| The Siheyuans The main house, also called thehouse, stands at the north end and faces the south. All the Siheyuans canpeople about who they belonged to. Hutong and Siheyuan can help us to see—the life in Beijing changes. |

Julie is ten years old. Her brother Rick is eleven. Last year their family went to Kenya (肯尼亚) for their summer holiday. They had a wonderful time. Kenya is famous for its safari holiday. On a safari holiday, you stay in a national park and watch the wild animals. Julie's family did this. They camped in the middle of a national park, far from any towns.
There were guides with them, and the guides knew a lot about wild animals. During the day, their guides took them in a big car and they saw all kinds of animals.
They saw lions, elephants, monkeys and many other wild animals. Sometimes the animals came very close to them. Once an elephant started to walk towards them, and Julie and Rick felt very scared. The guide said, "It's all right. Don't move, please."
He didn't seem afraid at all! After some minutes, the elephant walked away. At night, the family slept in a tent. They could hear the noises of the animals.
They said it was noisy, and sometimes they couldn't sleep! Also, they said it was very, very hot. But they loved their holiday and are going again next year.
Dear Alice,
At first, I spent two days in New York. And then it took over five hours to get to the Great Lakes by train on the 13th and I'm staying until the 16th.The weather is great here. This morning I went swimming and then enjoyed the delicious food. Just then I found Roberto Benigni-my favorite movie star. I took a photo with him. You know, that was my dream. I'm going to show you the picture.
Yours,
Bob
Dear Dad,
I arrived in Yunnan yesterday. I enjoyed delicious food. The weather was very hot, but I had fun going bike riding. What a beautiful place! Oh, I'm very happy to tell you who I met here. Dave, my high school classmate. How small the world is! He is working here as an English teacher at a middle school. I bought a special bag made in Yunnan for you and a beautiful skirt for mum in the Gift Shop. Tomorrow morning I'm going to Beijing. Oh, I'm longing for the great city!
Love,
Cindy
Dear Helen,
Thanks for your last letter. I'm in Bangkok on vacation with my parents. I think Bangkok is an interesting place to visit. Yesterday l visited some interesting places with them. They were great. This morning we went shopping. Bangkok is a good place to shop for jewelry(珠宝) and clothes. They are beautiful but not expensive. My mother bought a nice sweater and my father bought some T-shirts.
The weather is very hot here. Oh, yesterday it rained and was cool. But today it becomes very hot again.
The people here are very friendly. When we ate in the restaurant, the waiters were really friendly and always smiling. The food is very delicious, but it is a little hot for me. You can find some Chinese food here because lots of Chinese people came to live in Bangkok many years ago. Chinese food is very delicious and I like it very much. In Bangkok you can also find our American food, but l didn't eat it. You know, I would like new things when I'm on vacation.
How was your vacation in Sydney? Write to me soon.
Yours.
Maria

| This is Westin Restaurant. It has the most delicious food. And it plays the most wonderful music. However, the food is the most expensive. And the waiters aren't friendly at all. |
| | East Lake is the best place to go on weekends. There are beautiful trees and flowers. The most important thing is that it is free for visitors. However, sometimes it's kind of crowded because of too many people. |
| | Many people like Wanda Cinemas. It has the biggest screens and the most comfortable seats, and the workers always do their best to help you. But the tickets are more expensive than those in any other cinema. |
| | I always go shopping here because it's the closest to my home. People can buy the cheapest things. But there is a bad thing. The workers here are boring. They always ask you to buy things you don't need at all. |

My family and I went to the Superstar Circus last weekend. We went to the last show at nine o'clock. The horses performed first. The horses danced around when the band started to play in order to make everyone happy.
The young acrobats (杂技演员) were up next. They put on the amazing performance on two-legged chairs. The most special one was performed by a fifteen-year-old girl. She rode a bicycle on a rope (绳索),but it was difficult for her to ride the bike on the thin rope. As she tried to ride from one end to the other, she almost fell down twice. The crowd broke into a loud applause (掌声) when she finally finished her performance.
Next, a large elephant stepped carefully on its trainer before walking over him. The people gave them loud applause once again, l was actually an exciting act!
The clowns (小丑) offered the people the interesting act during the break. They played jokes on each other and even on some of the people in the crowd. We had a laugh as they finished their act with a funny song and dance.
After the break came the wild animals. The lions would sit, run and shout according to trainers' orders. The trainer was so close to the lions that we were worried about them much.
The show ended with a group of clever chimpanzees showing off their maths skills.
It was already eleven o'clock when we left the circus. We went home, excited by the experience of watching a great, live show. It was a show not to be missed!

The British Museum is the biggest one in the world. There are about a hundred things in the museum to see. You can see (钟表) which have been telling the time for 600 years. You can also see Roman money, and some of the earliest books in the world-they even (包括) Shakespeare's works!
The British Museum was founded nearly 300 years ago by a doctor, Sir Hans Sloane. The man liked (收集) such things as books, drawings, clothes, money, animals and flowers. He also hoped that this visited by people after his death. His (愿望) came true, and the museum opened in 1759, six years after he died.
There was a reading room in the museum. Something was (不寻常的) in the room.
Cool air came up through small holes in the tables. Hot air flowing under the floor kept readers' feet warm. Since its opening, many (著名的) men have written and studied there. And the (图书馆) is growing faster and faster-—there are four kilometers of new shelves each year!
The British Museum (改变) a lot. It is now open every day of the year, except for three (假期). Small machines tell you about the museum and as you walk around it, you can look and listen at the same time. So if you are one of the British Museum's two (百万) visitors this year, don't try to see it all too quickly. There is a lifetime of looking in the British Museum.
Hong Kong is a city that is full of surprises. You can find plenty of fun things to do here.
|
Look for the Pink Dolphins Take cruise(乘船游览)to look for the very endangered pink dolphins in the waters around Lantau Island. The pink dolphins only live in the waters around Hong Kong, but only about 100 pink dolphins are left in local waters because of water pollution and boat traffic. |
|
Go Horse Racing Horse racing is a very popular sport in Hong Kong. The Hong Kong Jockey Club has races on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. |
|
The Trip to Ocean Park and Water World Ocean Park and Water World are huge fun entertainment parks which are great for kids or the young. The two parks are right next to each other. |
|
Shop at Stanley Market(赤柱市场) Hong Kong is famous as a shopping paradise(乐园). There are malls and shopping centres almost everywhere. But everyone who visits Hong Kong is sure to go to Stanley Market! |
Changbai Mountain is widely regarded as the most beautiful mountain in the northeast of China. It is in Jilin Province. Its name, Changbai, means " ever white" in Chinese, and its whiteness is because of the pumice stones(浮石). You can get there by train or by bus.
Here are some tips for you if you want to visit it.
●From November to April heavy snows blanket the area. August is the best time to visit.
●Be sure to set out from your hotel early in the morning, so that you have time to see everything and then return. There is no hotel on the mountain.
●Bring food and water with you.
