Volunteers — work for free

    After people finish school, they often look for jobs to make money for living. There are many kinds of jobs people do: doctors, policemen, teachers, workers and so on.

    Besides their own jobs, some people choose to be volunteers —people who do a job of helping other 1 getting money. Volunteers do different types of jobs. Some volunteers read books on tapes so that people with poor eyesight can listen. Some deliver meals to elderly(年长者) or 2 people. Still some volunteers help 3 who visit a city during a big event (事件). Sometimes volunteers also assist in 4 building fires. Volunteers help whenever a city is hit by a natural disaster(灾难). They might help to5 people from areas that hit by an earthquake or have been flooded.

    Volunteers are important and a city always needs a lot. Are you ready to be one?

Craig Kielburger was born in Canada in 1982. When he was twelve, he read a story in the Toronto Star newspaper about a poor boy. The boy was killed because he fought for the rights of children. And from reading the story he knew many children in some countries couldn't go to school. So he and his friends started the Free the Children. The organization helps to develop the education in Kenya, India, China and other countries. Today, they have built more than 700 schools and school rooms in these countries. They have also provided clean water, health care to more than one million people around the world.

    Many of you must have watched the grand celebration in Tian'anmen Square on TV on Oct 1. But some lucky Beijing students got to take part in the event themselves!

    Chen Zehao, 14, is a student from Beijing's ChenJingrun High School. He performed in one of the 36 formations（方阵）in the mass parade（群众游行）. Wearing a yellow T-shirt and white trousers, holding flowers and flags in his hands, Chen shouted loudly "Long live our motherland!"

     "I'll never forget when groups of aircraft flew above my head and made a ‘70' in the air," Chen said. "My chest was full of joy and pride."

    Twin brothers Ma Congyuan and Ma Conglin performed in a choir（合唱团）during the evening gala. The 15-year-olds are from Beijing No.4 High School. The choir was made up of 1,400 students from universities, high schools and primary schools in Beijing. They performed 16 songs during the gala, including My Motherland and Me and On the Hopeful Field.

     "The beautiful bloom of fireworks, the strong sound of thousands of people singing together, and the bright symphonic（交响乐的）music…All these are still in my ears, amazing me more than ever before," Ma Congyuan said.

    The twin brothers practiced hard over the summer. While practicing, they sometimes had to sing and stand for a whole day. "But all of our hard work paid off when we started performing," Ma Conglin said. "It has been a great honor to be part of such a great event!"

February 21 is International Mother Language Day. The United Nations (name) it in 1999. The purpose is to protect all languages around world. In China, most people speak Chinese their mother language. More people speak Chinese than any other language in the world. About one (five) of the world's population speak a form of Chinese,   BBC reported.

(early) known written record of Chinese is the oracle bone script(甲骨文) of the Shang Dynasty. Most Chinese characters are ideograms(表意文字) which put two or more (word) together to make a new one. For example, jia means "a pig under the roof". This shows that people in ancient times thought of home as a place(hold) treasures.

As time went on, (thousand) of words developed. However, people only use a few thousand of them in everyday life. Today, new words are still being added to the Chinese dictionary, such as dishi for taxis and xiu for TV shows.

With the fast development of (China) economy(经济), more people from other countries are taking interest in Chinese. In a survey of last December, 2，007 people were asked "Which new foreign language would you learn？" Chinese placed (two), after Spanish, with 15 percent of the vote(选票).

    April 28^th is Take Our Sons and Daughters to Work Day all over the US. On that day kids leave school and go to work with their 1. This holiday shows what it means to be a grown-up in the 2world. It helps kids know something about real-life jobs and get them 3for their work in the future.

    I still remember I was very 4when this day started. Because I could stay away from 5for a whole day, sit in my dad's 6all day long and go to a restaurant for lunch together!

But after only 20 minutes of 7around the city, I began to feel less 8. I couldn't read in the car 9I would get car-sick. My dad didn't like to 10the radio. I couldn't enjoy the music. People wouldn't get 11his taxi because they thought he already had a passenger: ME—so 12stopped us for a ride. It seemed like years before we went out for lunch 13. I actually started to think of going back to school.

I learned something quite 14from the day—I began to have a different feeling for school. Where else can I play with my friends, read great books and do science experiments all in one day? Just as you'll have to learn to love your job later in life, learn to 15school now. If you don't already, try spending the day at work with your dad.

Taekwondo (跆拳道) is the national sports of South Korea. The name taekwondo was created by Choi Hong Hi, a Korean general in 1955. In 1966, he established the International Taekwondo Federation (ITF). Seven years later, another organization, the World Taekwondo Federation (WTE), was created. And under its guidance taekwondo became an official medal sport at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia.

Nowadays taekwondo is becoming more and more popular. It is practiced all over the world by more than 70 million people. People think of taekwondo as both an art and a sport.

It is an art because you use your mind and body to make movements. The Korean word taekwondo means the way of the foot and the hand. In taekwondo, people kick and hit. They must control their feet and hands. They learn to use the mind for each movement. This makes taekwondo artistic.

Taekwondo is a sport because two people fight and there is a winner of the match. There are many types of contests. People train for years to get ready for big championships, including the Olympics. To become an Olympic champion, you must work very hard and never give up.

Taekwondo is fun, but it is hard work, too. Many people loved it. After all, it can make us stronger and more confident. It also teaches us to never give up. What is more, it can help us to make us safe when someone wants to hurt us.

Around the world, artificial intelligence （AI） has slowly become a part of our everyday lives. One of the biggest implementations （实施） is facial recognition （FR） technology.

After enabling people to make payments, FR has now been put to use in the subway of Zhengzhou, Henan province.in September, FR is available to passenger who link their online payment systems to the smartphone app of the subway. China Daily reports that other cities in China,Beijing, are testing a similar system.

It's not hard to set why FR technology could help speed up security checks meaningfully. Yuan Xiaoqin, a park manager in Hangzhou, told China Central Television the reason the park changedentry system: "Facial recognition can help a visitor enter the park in two or three seconds. Fingerprint information sometimes isn't sensitive （灵敏的）,in cases of being hurt or when the fingers are too dry to be recognized. " Before, the park used a fingerprint entry system.

However, the use of facial recognition some problems about security hidden danger so far.

Many people feel using facial recognition. They doubt the necessity of using facial details and worry the information could be let out. Their worries are . In August, a face— changing app called Zao allowed users to imitate （模仿） famous stars from films and TV through the use of facial recognition.as it was, users worried that the app was collecting a large amount of personal information.

Sometimes people can refuse the app if they don't want their facial information disclosed, but sometimes people don't have a choice. Once this information is let out, it's hard to take useful actions. There is no law in China the use and collection of facial information. App operators, public service and government departments should be more careful in preventing use of the technology disorderly.

Tragedy at the Circus

In yesterday's circus (马戏团) show ,a lion suddenly went mad and tried to kill its trainer .Then it had to be shot dead .When the circus packed up and left, the head of the circus said the show would go on, even without lions.

However ,even before this tragedy (悲剧), animal rights activists fought against keeping wild animals in unnatural situations and forcing them to make money .It is now time for us to take steps to make sure that circus animals are treated properly.

Circus Safety for Animals

Our circus recently experienced a most tragic event in its history. While we are thankful for the pity from the public, we are also shocked by the opinion expressed in "Tragedy at the Circus."

First ,our performing animals are not taken from the wild .We always believe humans and animals can-and should-live together nicely .To us ,our circus is one of the only places left to support and protect performing in the existence (存在) of the species (物种). Those who say that circus life is harmful to animals show little knowledge of these facts .Life in the "wild" is unsafe, but an endless fight for existence.

This circus has proven (证明) that animals are stronger and smarter than we could imagine .In the circus is a joyful environment for both animals and humans: people are educated, and animals saved.

    Many high school students In the United States get hands—on(实践的) training in construction (建筑) skills by building real houses.

    One such program was created for construction and design students in Waterloo. The students have already received training in many areas of house construction. They have put up walls and built windows and doors.

    The project is run by the Waterloo Career Center. The center offers students different programs designed to prepare them for careers in technical fields. Students from the Waterloo Community School recently took part in construction training that centered on the skill of masonry(砖石建筑)— work done with stone brick or other materials.

    The students spent five days on their school learning from experienced workers, who taught them how to build hard walls with bricks and blocks. Learning such skills will help the students be able to build their own solid structures later in their careers.

As students worked, they were told to be sure to use amazing tool to check that the wall stands straight and level. Students think that this kind of learning is much better than sitting at a computer. They also said they liked this method of learning, because it got them excited about future careers in construction.

    Bringing the program into schools is an important way to find the next generation of workers. It is great to have a whole week here to present masonry to kids

    Doctors without Borders is an international medical volunteer organization founded by doctors and reporters in France in 1971.The idea of this organization is to offer medical help to people in need. It sends doctors to poor countries, war regions (ME), and disaster (疾病) areas to provide medical aid. It provides helps to all the people, no matter what their races (种族),religion (宗教)or political believes (政治信仰)are. In 1999, Doctors Without Borders won the Nobel peace prize. If you are a doctor, and you want to work overseas (海外) to help patients to live a better life, you are welcome to join us. Although you don't make money as you think, you can get other great things in return. You   will learn how to work under serious pressure because it's not an easy job. You can also practice your medical experience. You can also improve your language skills because we may speak at least two languages when we are working. The most exciting of all, you can discover your skills and be a better you. Everyone needs friends. There is an old saying, " Friends are God's way of looking after us. "

The American writer Sally Seamans tells young students some smart ways to make friends. Sally says finding friendship （友谊） is just like planting a tree. You plant the seed (种子) and look after it to make it grow.

First you should choose a friend. What makes a good friend? It is not because a person has money or good looks.  For example, if you have a bad day, a good friend should listen to your complaints (抱怨) and do his or her best to help you.

To make a friend, you can't be too shy. You should make each other happy and share your happiness. But things can't be always happy. Even the best friends have fights.  You can talk to him or her. If he or she doesn't want to talk, you can write a letter.Say what you have done wrong and why you did this or that. Remember that friendship is one of the most important things in your life.

It's very common to hear of Chinese parents hiring a tutor(家庭教师) if their children are doing badly in tests. Do you know that teenagers can be tutors themselves? Amir Davis, 16 from New York, us, is a tutor. Together with six other teens, he runs a special tutoring program for other kids.

The program mainly helps middle school students who have difficulties at school or who are preparing for a test to enter the eight STEM-oriented(注重STEM教育的) public high schools in New York.

As an African-American student at one of these schools, Davis finds that black and Latino(拉丁美洲的) students have low admission(录取) rates every year. One of the reasons is that some of those students don't take the test, not realizing that they can take it to enter their dream schools. So Davis tries to help those kids prepare for the test while he also helps them with other schoolwork.

Davis and his team recently turned a building that his father bought into a tutoring center. During their tutoring, if the students are having trouble with any subject. Davis or other tutors will help them. With the help, the students can try to improve their grades and do better in the classroom.

It's not that easy for teenagers to be able to become teen tutors. One needs to keep learning and improving. The most difficult thing for Davis is learning how to be patient. Davis said that he had to learn not to become sad if his students didn't pick up a subject quickly.

However. teen tutors also have their own special advantages. For Davis, he thinks it's better that he's a teen because he can easily understand his students. He can make jokes with the kids and make the situation more lighthearted.

She was from South Africa. She fought for black people. In 1968 she moved to England, and started up English language classes for adults who had come to live in England. When Ruth died in1981, some teachers started a charity in her name to remember her.

●are now living in England

●don't have enough money to study

From 2016 to 2017 we helped hundreds of students from about 40 countries to study lessons such as medicine, English and computer.

Most of the money we give out is for lessons and exams and we also spend some money on books and other things like knives for cooking and scissors for cutting hair.

Naima, from Somalia, studied medicine with the help of the Trust. This helped her to get into a good university.

We raise money by ourselves. Some people give away money to us because they like what we do. We also hold many events such as concerts and sales to raise money. Naima, the girl who once got help from us, joined us in raising money later. She talked about how the Trust had helped change her life. But we don't have enough money. To continue helping people like Naima, we need to raise more money.

Welcome to Sunshine Town. It's a small town, but there are many clothes stores in it. Here are three of them. Let me introduce them to you. Then you can choose which one to go to.

Bob's Bargain is the cheapest store in town. Though it's the cheapest, it isn't the most popular. People don't shop there very often because quite a few people say the things there are the worst.

Blue Moon sells very good things. It sells the most fashionable clothes and the best record players. And it has the best service. However, people don't often shop there because the things there are also the most expensive. And it is far from the town center. You have to take a long bus ride.

Super Saver is the most popular store in town. The things there aren't the cheapest, and they aren't the most expensive. It doesn't have the best things, and it doesn't have the worst, so is with the service. The clothes aren't the most fashionable, but they are more fashionable than the ones at many other stores. And its location is convenient, too.

A cat cafe named Miaoxiannv (Cat Fairy) in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, has become popular in this city(recent). It provides customers with a new service is to scan (扫描)a cat to order a meal.

Luo An, overseas graduate, runs the cafe. As Luo seldom stays at the cafe, his only employee would always get into a mess for being a waitress, cashier and cat (keep) at the same time.

Thus, Luo came up with the idea (dress) all the cats in shirts printed with QR codes. It enables customers to order their meals using online payment apps such as Koubei and Alibaba's Alipay on their own.

Besides QR codes, each cat has a self-introduction printed on (it) clothes. These introductions on cats' clothes show their different and  (fun) personalities.

"There are 15 cats at the cafe. Only those with good personalities can serve (customer). Cat lovers (allow) to buy cat food on the apps and feed the cats themselves", said Luo.

On both sides of the River Thames in London, big crowds wait for the start of a rowing race. Their eyes are focused on two boats from the two top universities in Britain.

The race is between two groups of eight rowers from Oxford and Cambridge. The rowers race for about 6. 8 kilometers on the river every year. Since 1836, the rowing eights have worn different shades of blue—Oxford wear dark blue and Cambridge light blue. As a result, the rowers are known as the Blues. To help their universities win the competition, they trained really hard. Their training timetable is strict: they usually train for six days a week for six months, to prepare for it.

The rowing tradition has a long history, nearly 200 years. The very first race took place in 1829, when a Cambridge student challenged (挑战) a school friend studying at Oxford. Ever since, the team who lost the previous year challenges the other team. Though there's little difference between the two universities, Cambridge is in the lead with 84 wins, while Oxford 80 wins.

There have been some interesting events over the centuries. In 1877, and the only time so far, both boats crossed the line at the exact same time. It's been the only draw in its history. In the 1912 race, weather conditions were poor. Strong winds blew during the race, and surely enough, both boats sank (沉默)! And in 2012, the race was stopped after a student entered the water and swam towards the boats. He was against the war. And April 11, 2015 made history. It was the first time that the men's teams and women's teams raced at the same place and on the same day.
