Keep Calm and Carry On

Stuart Manley and his wife. Mary, run a second hand bookshop called Barter Books in Alnwick. Northumberland. In 2000, they bought a box of old books. When Stuart got them back to the shop, he discovered a poster at the bottom of the box. The poster read "Keep Calm and Carry On". Neither Stuart nor Mary knew anything about the history of the poster, but they liked it so much that they decided to hang the poster in their bookshop.

At the start of World War Ⅱ the British government designed three posters and the Keep Calm poster was one of them. Two of the three posters were released (展示) in public in order to encourage the British people. Although nearly 2. 5 million copies of the Keep Calm poster had been printed, the British government decided not to release them. In 1940. most of the copies were recycled into other paper products, Only a few were left.

The poster started its second life when Manley's poster began attracting the attention of customers in his shop. He printed copies of the poster to sell. Soon other companies began to sell products with the slogan (标语). It appeared on everything from mugs to shopping bags.

The reasons for the popularity of this rediscovered poster aren't hard to understand. Shortly after the poster made its appearance in 2000, a worldwide economic (经济的) downturn began. People were in need of something to raise their spirits. The saying "Keep Calm and Carry On" seems to be the perfect slogan to bring courage and hope to people. Besides the encouraging message, the simple design of the poster helped lead to its popularity.

Today the now—famous wartime slogan has been rewritten in many fun ways. Some people have created phrases like "Keep Calm and Dance On", "Keep Calm and Call Mom" or "Keep Calm and Eat a Cupcake", The slogan has become part of popular culture. The explanations of the slogan are often lighthearted, but it is important to remember its purpose when it was first designed.

  1. (1) Where did Stuart discover the poster?
  2. (2) Did Stuart know anything about the history of the poster when it was discovered?
  3. (3) When was the poster first designed?
  4. (4) Why did the poster become popular?

Recently, teenagers face many kinds of problems. Like many of them, I was once troubled with worries and dissatisfaction. Few people could understand my feelings.

"The problem with your generation is that you always expect to be happy," my mother once said.  Shouldn't we try hard to achieve it?

But now I have noticed a change in my thinking. I gradually realize what my mother said was correct. Over these years, many studies have shown that we are crazy about happiness and high personal confidence.  In fact, we may often be happier when we stop focusing on happiness.

We should also reset our expectations of the future. Don't expect miracles (奇迹), and accept that no matter how hard we try, feelings of failure and unhappiness will appear from time to time. When we feel sad, it's often because we have learned something painful but important.  At the same time, we should learn how to deal with them better than trying to make them disappear.

As my mother tried to teach me all those years ago, "Prepare for the worst, hope for the best, and be unsurprised by everything in between."

A. Neither could my parents.

B. We should keep the stress off ourselves.

C. Surely happiness was the purpose of living.

D. That may make us less satisfied with our lives.

E. Happiness arrives when we are least expecting it.

F. So it's necessary for us to accept sad feelings as part of life.

For years I wanted a flower garden. I would spend hours thinking of different things I could plant that would look nice together. But then we had Matthew, Marvin, Helen, and the twins, Alisa and Alan. I was too busy raising them to grow a garden.

Money was tight (拮据的), as well as time. Often when my children were little, one of them would want something that cost too much, and I'd have to say, "Do you see a money tree in the yard? Money doesn't grow on trees, you know."

Finally, all got through high school and college and were off on their own. I started thinking again about having a garden.

Then, one spring morning, on Mother's Day, I was working in my kitchen. Suddenly, I looked out of the window and there was a new tree, planted right in my yard. I thought it must be a weeping willow (垂柳), because I saw things blowing around on all is branches. Then I put my glasses on — and couldn't believe what I saw.

There was a money tree in my yard!

I went to have a look. It was true! There were dollar bills, one hundred of them, taped all over that tree. There was also a note among them, "Thank you for your time, Mom. We love you."

Later, my children bought me tools, a sunflower stepping stone and gardening books.

That was three years ago. My garden's now very pretty, just like I wanted. When I go out and take care of my flowers, I don't seem to miss my children as much as I once did. It feels like they're right there with me.

I live in a city where winters are long and cold, and summers are too short. But every year now, when winter sets in, I look out of my window and think of the flowers, I'll see next spring in my little garden. I think about what my children did for me, and I get tears in my eyes — every time.

I'm still not sure that money grows on trees. But I know love does!

It was a rainy night in New Orleans, US. At a bus station, I watched a young girl cry as her baggage was taken down. It seemed she'd lost her ticket. She begged the bus driver not to leave her behind

"Losing your ticket is like losing your money," the bus driver said, and left her in the rain.

But then an old man stood up and blocked the driver's way. "How can you leave that girl out there? You know she had a ticket. You can't just leave her here. You can't leave her in a city where she doesn't have a friend. You will meet your schedule, but she might meet her end.

The driver showed no sign that he'd heard or even cared about the young girl's problem, or how her travels went.

So the old gentleman said, "I'll pay for her fare. I'll give her a little money to help her on her way."

He went and bought the ticket for the girl. "How can I repay the kindness you've shown tonight?" she asked. "We're strangers who won't meet again. A mere ‘thank you doesn't seem right.
