Dick lived in England. One day in January he said to his wife, "I'm going to fly to New York next week because I've got some work there." "Where are you going to stay there?" his wife asked. "I don't know yet." Dick answered. "Please send me your address from there in a telegram (电报)," his wife said. "All right," Dick answered.
He flew to New York on January 31st and found a nice hotel in the center of the city. He put his things in his room and then he sent his wife a telegram. He put the address of his hotel in it.
In the evening he didn't have any work, so he went to a cinema. He came out at nine o'clock and said, "Now I'm going back to my hotel and have a nice dinner."
He found a taxi (出租车) and the driver said, "Where do you want to go? "But Dick didn't remember the name and address of his hotel.
"Which hotel are my things in?" he said, "And what am I going to do tonight? "But the driver of the taxi did not know. So Dick got out and went into a post office. There he sent his wife another telegram, and in it he wrote, "Please send me my address at this post office."
Have you ever been sad because you failed in something? If so, please remember, for often, achieving what you expect is not the most important thing. Here is a story to tell you why.
One day a little boy decided to dig a hole behind his house after watching a science program. As he was working, a couple of boys stopped by to watch. “What are you doing?” asked one of the visitors. “I want to dig a deep hole all the way through the earth!” the boy answered excitedly. The older boys began to laugh, telling him that it was impossible to do it. Then they left.
The little boy kept on digging and digging. Suddenly, a few small colorful stones caught his eyes. He collected them and put them into a glass jar (罐) patiently. Humming (哼唱) a song, he went on digging. The jar was full soon. Then he talked to himself calmly and proudly, “Maybe I can't finish digging all the way through the earth, but look at what I have found in the process (过程) of digging!”
The boy's goal (目标) was too difficult, but it did cause him to go on, in other words, to cause us to keep working!
Not every goal will be achieved. Not every job will end up with a success. Not every dream will come true. But when you can't achieve your goal, maybe you can say, “Yes, but look what I've found along the way! There are so many wonderful things that have come into my life because I tried to do something!” It is in the digging that life is lived. It is the unexpected joy on the journey that really has a meaning.
We'd driven all night to reach Saltillo, Mexico. We were hungry, so we stopped our car by a door under a big red Coca-Cola sign and went into the small restaurant for breakfast. We sat down at the table. I greeted the waitress in Spanish and ordered some coffee and eggs. We also asked an ashtray because all of us smoked. The waitress served us and then stood at the kitchen door, watching us. While I was eating, I said to my friends that there were so few people eating here. But he replied that the food was delicious.
When we finished our food, I asked for our bill. To our surprise, the waitress didn't want to give it to us. She said we were travellers and she was happy to serve us. I said this was business and I was happy to pay for the delicious food. "No, sir," she said. "This is not a restaurant--this is our home!" When we stepped outside, we found a Coco-Cola sign hung over every doorway!
A man and his son were going through the mountain. Suddenly, the boy fell down on the mountain road and shouted with a pain "Aah!" To his surprise, he heard the same voice from the mountain, "Aah!" The boy felt more surprised, so he shouted again, "Who is this?" And the voice replied the same, "Who is this?" The boy got angry, and shouted a third time "You are too stupid" !And again the voice replied the same, " You are too stupid!"
Annoyed by this, the boy asked his father, "Father, what is going on? Who is this?" The father replied, "Son, pay attention." The father shouted, "You are very nice." And the voice replied the same, "You are very nice." "The father shouted again," I love you." And the voice replied the same, "I love you." The father shouted a third time, "Thank you very much." And the voice again replied the same, "Thank you very much." The son was very surprised but he still could not understand what to make of it.
The father explained, "Son, people call it resonance (回声), but this is the truth of our life. Your life is a reflection of your actions. Whatever you give to others, you will receive the same in return."
Whatever we give to others, life gives us the same in return. Our life is not an accident or a coincidence (巧合), but it is the shadow what we are doing. Our life is simply a reflection of our actions. If we want more love in the world, create more love in our hearts.
When the great library of Alexandria burned, the story goes, one book was saved. But it was not a valuable book, and a poor man got it.
The book wasn't very interesting, but between its pages there was something very interesting indeed. It was a thin strip of vellum(羊皮纸)on which was written the secret of the "Touchstone".
The touchstone was a small pebble(鹅卵石)that could turn any common metal into pure gold.
The writing explained that it was lying among thousands and thousands of other pebbles that looked exactly like it. But the secret was this. The real stone would feel warn, while ordinary pebbles are cold.
So the man sold his house, bought a tent, camped on the seashore, and began testing pebbles. He knew that if he picked up normal pebbles and threw them down again because they were cold, he might pick up the same pebbles hundreds of times. So, when he felt one that was cold, he threw it into the sea. He spent a whole day doing this but none of them was the touchstone. Yet he went on and on this way. Pick up a pebble. Cold—throw it into sea. Pick up another. Throw it into the sea. The days stretched into months and the months into years.
One day, however, about midafternoon, he picked up a pebble and it was warm. He threw it into the sea before he realized what he had done. He was used to throwing each pebble into the sea as soon as he picked it up. So when the one he wanted came along, he still threw it away.
So it is with opportunity(机会). Unless we are vigilant, it's easy to fail to realize an opportunity when it is in hand and it's just as easy to throw it away.
Some children want to be writers someday. They want to write stories or1for people to read. That's2! It's good to write something for people to read!3they should know that they need to be good 4 first before they become really good writers. Because reading books 5 helpful for them to become a good writer. They should read6books,instead of (代替) watching TV and spending a lot of time7games when they are free. There is much fun in reading. You must8more books to read.
Before you decide(决定) to be a good writer, you should say to9, "I am going to do my best to read more and10books!"
On a cold November afternoon, my mother and I were walking back home from a pizza store. We had bought many things. I was feeling a little 1as I was carrying our shopping bag, so I decided to throw something away. I noticed a poor man walking out of the restaurant in front of us2I was walking towards a dustbin(垃圾箱). He headed over to the nearby dustbin and started looking through it.
I suddenly felt very3because I was about to throw away a new drink just because it was too heavy. I walked up to him and handed the 4and some bread over to him. The man looked up5 and took what I gave him. A huge smile6on his face. I felt I couldn't be happier with7. But then he said, "Wow, this is my son's lucky day!"
With that, he8me happily and started off on his bike. I9heard him singing as he rode away. I got a warm10inside. I now understand what it means by the saying "Giving is getting".
Do you want to live a happier, less stressful life? Try laughing for no reason at all. That's how thousands of people start their day at Laughter Clubs around the world and many doctors now think that having a good ax laugh might be one of the best ways to stay healthy.
The first Laughter Club was started in Mumbai, India, in 1995 by Dr. Madan Kataria. "Young children laugh about 300 times a day. Adults laugh between 7 and 15 times a day, "says Dr. Kataria. "Everyone's naturally good at laughing-it's the universal language. We want people to feel happy with their lives. " There are now more than 500 Laughter Clubs in India and over 1, 303 worldwide.
Many doctors in the West are also interested in the effects of laughter on our health. According to a 5-year study at the UCLA School of Medicine in(California, laughter reduces stress in the body, improves our defenses against illness by about 40% and is very good for the heart.
So, what happens at a Laughter Club? I went along to my nearest club in south London to find out. I was quite nervous about it, to be honest-I wasn't keen on the idea of laughing with a group of strangers, and I was worried about looking stupid. First, our laughter teacher told us to clap our hands and say "ho ho ho, ha ha ha," while looking at each other. Apparently our bodies can't tell the difference between fake laughter and real laughter, so still produce the same healthy chemicals.
Amazingly, it works. After ten minutes everybody in the room was laughing for real-and some people just couldn't stop!At the end of the class I was surprised by how relaxed and calm I felt. So if you're upset about something at work or just fed up with your daily routine, then start laughing. You might be very pleased with the results!

"Why are you crying, Sally? You said you would 8 well." Ask David, Gently.
"Daddy, my tooth was nearly falling this morning, and it fell 9 the pool just now. If I can't find it and put it under my pillow this evening, the Tooth Fairy won't find it." Sally answered.
Hearing this, all the people were in relief except Mr. Pan, the boss.
He asked his assistant to 10 him a card with the villa's picture on it. Then he marked the place where the girl's tooth had fallen on the picture and wrote 11 it, "Dear Tooth Fairy, this is the place where Sally's fallen tooth is. I promise. Gomez Pan." 12 the card, Sally smiled, thinking she could put the card under her 13 and met the Tooth Fairy.
The card with the message was just inspiration
but it made people feel 14 and sweet. Kids all have a simple and innocent world. What adults can do is to 15 the unique world that every kid has. Mr. Pan, a boss, can do it, so can everybody.
Mr Harris lived in a small house by himself. He was always 1 about what he ate and drank, and he never 2 when the weather was cold. He was always afraid that he was getting terribly ill,3 he often went to his doctor, and the doctor was getting very4 of him, because he had more other work)5.
Then one day Mr Harries hurried 6 the doctor's office and told him he was sure he had a terrible illness, which he had 7 about in the newspaper. He showed the doctor the 8. The doctor read it9 and then said, "But, Mr Harris, people don't know when they have this illness! And they feel just well." "Oh, my goodness," said Mr Harris. "I thought so. That's just 10 I feel!"
A father and his son went to a kite-flying festival. The son was happy when he saw the sky full of colorful kites. He wanted to fly a kite, too. The father then 1 a kite for his son in the store.
The son started to fly the kite. 2, his kite was high up in the sky in a few minutes. Then, the son said, "Father, it seems that the string(线)is stopping the kites from flying higher. If we cut it, it will be 3 and fly higher. Can we cut it?" The father cut the string off of the reel(线轴).
The kite started to go 4. This made the little boy happy.
But then, slowly, the kite started to 5. It finally fell to the ground. The son was 6to see this. He asked his father, "Why did it fall down? I thought that the kite would fly higher 7cutting the string."
The father explained, "The string was not stopping the kite from going higher, but was helping it stay in the sky. You helped the kite go up in the right 8 by using the string. But it can no longer support(支撑)the kite if you cut the string."
We may sometimes feel like there is 9 holding us back and stopping us from growing. But 10, it might be the thing that supports us the most.
One day, my father and I were in line to buy tickets for the circus(马戏表演). And a family was standing in front of us.
The family had eight children. Their clothes were not expensive but clean. The children talked about the clowns(小丑), elephants, monkeys and other things excitedly. It was their first time to go to the circus.
The ticket lady asked the father how many tickets he wanted. He proudly answered, "I want eight children's tickets and two adults' tickets, so I can take my family to the circus."
The ticket lady said the price(价格). The man's wife lowered her head and there was no smile on the man's face. He quietly asked, "How much did you say?"
The ticket lady said the price again. The man didn't have enough money. How could he tell his eight kids the bad news? My dad put his hand into his pocket and pulled out a $20 bill and dropped it on the ground. (In fact, we were not rich!) Then my dad said, "Excuse me, sir, this dropped out of your pocket."
The man knew what was going on. He looked into my dad's eyes, held my dad's hand in his, and took the $20 bill. "Thank you, sir, thank you. This really means a lot to me and my family. "
My father and I went back home. We didn't go to see the circus that night, but we didn't care.
As the saying goes, "A hero is known in the time of misfortune(不幸)". Zhong Nanshan is a hero like this. He is a doctor in Guangdong, who (save) many people's lives in 2003.
In 2003, SARS broke out in Guangdong. Later, it (spread) across China and other parts of the world. Patients coughed a lot and got (fever). Hundreds of patients even died from the disease. Even many doctors and nurses got SARS they treated(治疗)patients. So everyone was afraid of it. But Zhong was brave enough (fight) the disease. Zhong spent days and nights (find) the cause of the disease. And with his way of treating, many patients began to get better. Zhong finally won people's trust.
In early 2020, a disease called Novel corona—virus pneumonia (新型冠状病毒肺炎)hit Wuhan. It spread (quick) and around tens of thousands of Chinese people were infected (感染). Zhong, 84, led (he) team to Wuhan to fight the illness. Zhong's team took many measures to cure the patients with Novel corona—virus pneumonia. He advised people to wear masks, wash hands frequently(频繁地), stay at home and not to go to crowed places.
Zhong likes sports very much. he was 67, he could still play basketball. Now at the age of 84, Zhong still treats patients in the hospital and (teach) young doctors. "l am just a doctor. " Zhong says. But we think he is a hero and a fighter.
An old man lived with his little grandson. Every day the old man got up early to read books.
One day the grandson asked, "Grandpa, I want to read books as you. But I always forget what I read. What are the advantages of reading?"
The grandfather didn't answer him, but he said to the boy, "Take this little basket to the river and bring back a basket of water for me. "The boy went to the river to fill the basket (篮子) with water, but all the water leaked out before he got back home. The boy was sad, but his grandfather laughed and said, "You'll have to walk faster next time."
The next time the boy ran faster, but the basket was still empty before he returned home. The boy said, "See, Grandpa, it's no use!"
"Is it useless ?" the old man said. "Look at the basket."
The boy looked at the basket and found that the basket was different. It was much cleaner.
"That's what happens when you read books. Maybe you can't understand or remember everything. Something will change in your mind after you read. Just like the basket. "
David felt sad as he walked home alone. He couldn't help thinking about his stupid mistake on the school soccer field. He missed scoring that goal. His mistake(make) the school team fail in the game.
As soon as he(arrive) home, his mother found his(sad). After she knew the whole story, she told her son that it was not necessary to be too hard on(he) and the winning or losing was only half the game. Shesaid that the most important thing was to support each other in a team. What his mother said made him thinklot.
The next day, David went to soccer practice with courageof fear in his heart. He saidto his teammates for his mistake. He said they should continue working together as a whole team. To his surprise, his teammates all agreed with him. They promised(encourage) each other and work much(hard) next time.
We like to believe that before we make a decision, most of the time, we take time to consider all the facts carefully. However, experts believe that only 5% of our decisions are based on a rational (理性的) thought process. So, what influences our decision﹣making process?
We often leave decision﹣making to our instincts (本能). Scientists have found out that if we had the choice, we like to avoid pain rather than get something. In fact, we're twice as happy when we try to avoid a bad situation than when we experience a good one. This is why when companies send ads, they use phrases like "How to avoid." "Don't miss out!" etc.
There are also physical reasons that influence our decision﹣making. Psychologist John Bargh carried on an experiment where people were asked what they thought of a fictional person, while holding a cold or a hot cup of coffee. Those holding the hot cup believed the person to be warmer and more sociable than those holding the cold cup. So, when temperatures rise, the more likely we are to believe in strangers.
Stress is another thing which influences our decisions. Different situations are more or less stressful for different people. Researchers have found, though, that women are more conservative (保守的)about decisions when stressed, while men are to make riskier choices.
It may come as a surprise but every day from the minute we get up, we have to make countless decisions, like what to wear, what coffee to have and so on. Each choice makes our brain a little bit more tired, and this influences our decision﹣making, too. That's why important people, like presidents wearing the same three suits all the time, want to limit the small choices and spend more brain power on the bigger ones.

One day, I took a taxi to the train station. We ere driving on the road when suddenly a black car jumped out of another lane (车道) right in front of us. My taxi almost hit he car.
The driver of the black car started shouting at us. But the taxi driver just smiled and said sorry to the man. I thought he was too friendly. I asked, "Why did you just do that? The man almost sent us to the hospital!" This is when he taxi driver taught me what we calk now-the Law of the Garbage Truck (垃圾车定律)
"Many people are like garbage trucks, "he said. "They run around full of garbage like frustration (沮丧) or anger. They need a place to dump (倾倒) it and sometimes they'll dump it on you. Don't take it seriously. Just smile, say sorry, wish them well and move on. Don't take their garbage to other people at work, at home, or in the street. "
One day, a mouse told the animals on the farm, "There a mousetrap(老鼠夹)in the farmer's house!"
The chicken said, "I really want to help you. , I am not strong enough."
The pig answered with smile, "Oh really? You'd better leave here."
The cow said happily, "It's a big problem for you only."
The mouse away angrily.
On that night, they all heard the sound of a mousetrap snapping(咔嚓一声)shut. It was so that the farmer's wife couldn't see things clearly. She thought it must be a mouse caught in the trap. But to surprise, it was a snake and the snake bit her. The farmer took her to the and the doctor said she was badly ill.
The farmer wanted to take good care of her. He killed the chicken to make some soup, but she was still sick. Her friends came to visit her. The farmer killed the to make dinner for them. Sadly, his wife died the next day. Many people came to her funeral(葬礼). The farmer the cow to cook enough meat for all of them.
When someone is facing a problem, don't think it has nothing to do you. When one of us is in danger, we are all in danger because we are living under the same sky.
