Once upon a time there was a man in a small town. He had two children, a boy and a girl. The boy was good-looking but the girl was not.
One day they found a mirror (镜子) for the first time and they saw what they looked like. The boy was very happy and he said to his sister, “How handsome I am! I look much nicer than you!”
The girl did not like what her brother said and gave him a hard push (推). “Go away!” she said.
Their father saw what was happening. He went up to them and said to the boy, “You must always BE good as well as LOOK good.”
Then to the girl he said, “My dear, if you help everyone and do your best to make him happy, everyone will love you. It does not matter that you are not as good-looking as your brother.”
On a cold December morning, my mother and I were walking home from pizza store. We were 1 warmly and equipped with the video we had been trying to watch. I was feeling a little tired 2 I was carrying our shopping bags of snacks and the video.
They were so3 that I decided to throw away some of them. So I started to walk towards the dustbin when I noticed a poor man stepping out of the restaurant in front of us. He held a paper bag with his dirty hand. He 4over to another nearby dustbin and started looking5 it.
I suddenly felt very upset. I know this man would take all he could get, so I walked up to him and6 the drink and some snacks to him. The man, with lines on his face and wrinkles(皱纹) on his forehead, looked up in 7 and took what I gave him.
A huge smile spread across his face and this made 8 feel indescribable satisfaction(满意). I felt like I couldn't be happier with myself, but then he said, "Wow, first someone gives me this sandwich, then this drink, and now some tasty food, this is my daughter's 9day!"
He thanked me happily and started off on his bike. I even heard him whistling(吹哨) a song as he walked away.
I now understand what is meant by the saying "giving is getting". Everyone in the world needs help, everyone can 10 help and everyone will be helped by something kind.
The image(图像) of that man's happiness drawn by my small gift appears in my mind every time I have the chance to do something nice.
To travel around the world is the dream of many adventurous people. But very few people can afford a global tour because hotels, food and airplane tickets are too expensive. Some people, however, have thought of some ways to realize their dreams.
Laura Cody and Tanbay Theune, a couple from Britain, decided to travel around the world. They have found a good way to pay for their trips. They look after pets for rich house owners. In exchange, they can stay in the houses for free. They have looked after horses, cows, cats, dogs and fish. In two years, the couple has been to Australia, Germany, Spain and Italy. They have stayed in big cities and small villages. The home owners are usually very generous and have given them food, wine and day trips.
Another person who tries to realize her travel dream is photographer Rhiannon Taylor. She travels around the world to visit, review and take photos of the best hotels. She shares the places she stays and the food she eats on the Internet with tens of thousands of followers.
With these ways of making money, traveling around the world is no longer a dream. More and more young people are thinking creatively to make their dream come true.
Every teacher probably asks himself time and again: What are the reasons for choosing teaching as a career? Do the rewards of teaching outweigh the trying comments? Answering these questions is not a simple task. Let's see what the author says.
Why do you teach? My friend asked the question when I told him that I didn't want to be considered for an administrative position. He was puzzled that I did not want what was obviously a "step up" toward what all Americans are taught to want when they grow up: money and power.
Certainly I don't teach because teaching is easy for me. Teaching is the most difficult of the various ways I have attempted to earn my living.
I teach because teaching is a profession built on change. When the material is the same, I change the more important, my students change.
I teach because I like the freedom to make my own mistakes, to learn my own lessons, to stimulate myself and my students. As a teacher, I'm my own boss. If I want my freshmen to learn to write by creating their own textbook, who is to say I can't? Such courses may be huge failures, but we can all learn from failures.
I teach because I like to ask questions that students must struggle to answer. The world is full of right answers to bad questions. While teaching, I sometimes find good questions.
Besides, teaching gives me pace, and variety, and challenge, and the opportunity to keep on learning.
Last, teaching offers love. Not only the love of learning and of books and ideas, but also the love that a teacher feels for that rare student who walks into a teacher's life and begins to breathe. Perhaps love is the wrong word: magic might be better.
These are the real reasons I teach, these people who grow and change in front of me. Being a teacher is being present at the creation, when the clay (黏土) begins to breathe.
I teach because, being around people who are beginning to breathe, I occasionally find myself catching my breath with them.
You run among crowded people in a railway station, only to find that the train has left. Do you feel depressed(沮丧的)? Probably. But if you are in France, someone may play the piano for you. It might be a performance of Chopin's Fantaisie-Impromptu or the Pirates of the Caribbean theme song. To our surprise, it is not performed by a paid musician or a street entertainer asking for coins. Instead, a passer-by jams (即兴演奏) on the piano in the station.
The national railroad company SNCF has put pianos in nearly 100 stations across France. They are rented from Yamaha Corporation. The first piano was set up in the Gare Montparnasse in Paris in 2012.
The pianos have proved to be very popular. In 2014, the SNCF and Yamaha organized a nationwide contest called "Your Turn to Play". It asked participants to upload (上传) video clips of themselves using one of the pianos. At last, about 900 people took part in the contest.
So if you miss a train in France one day, perhaps someone will be playing your favourite piece, and that will reduce your anxiety (焦虑) a bit. Or perhaps you'll sit down, roll up your sleeves and play your sadness away yourself.

Don't envy them or laugh at them.
They are in their Time Zone, and you are in yours!

One day, an l1-year -old girl asked her dad," What are you going to get me for my 15th birthday?" The father replied," Don't worry about that. You still have lots of time "But on a day after her 14th birthday, she passed out and was rushed to the hospital. The family learned that the girl had a serious heart problem and that she might die. At night, she asked her dad, "Daddy, have they told you that I am going to die?" The father replied, "No, you will live as long as anyone else."
She was curious (好奇的). "How can you be sure? He turned to her and said "I just know it."
After he girl turned 15, she had a heart tapa(心脏移植手术).After recovering(恢复), she came home to find a letter on her bed.
It said," My dearest daughter, if you are reading this, it means that everything went as I told you it would. One day you asked me what I would give you for your 15th birthday. I wasn't sure then. But now you know that my present to you is my heart. The father had donated(捐赠) his heart to his daughter.
Parents are selfless(无私的). They often make great sacrifices (牺牲) to make their children happy. Keep this in mind when you feel angry toward your parents. Oftentimes, they're just doing what they think is best for you.
I walked quickly out of my church. It was late. My dad was waiting. I stared at the parking lot. Then I saw my dad's little red Honda. "Get in! Get in! Why are you so late all the time?"
The ride home was not much more than five minutes but each minute moved slowly. We were stuck behind an older man. He wasn't going more than 15 kilometers an hour. My dad started to shout, "Learn how to drive, Grandpa!" He hit the steering wheel (方向盘) with his hands. He was really angry.
"Dad, stop it. Why do you always …?" He cut me off, "I'd not get stuck at the light because of this fellow!" The older man got to the light just as it was changing. "You're free! Drive away quickly," I thought. I looked over my dad. "Can you believe that, Stephen? I get stuck at every light. There are so many stupid drivers out there," he said angrily.
Who gives him the right to shout at someone? Anger built inside me. "What if I shouted at my friends when they asked me for help?" I said. I looked out of the window, trying to catch my breath.
" You know, Stephen, I think you are going to be a psychologist(心理学家)," he said. I remember the last time I tried to say something, he had fumed, "Don't tell me how to drive! If I want your opinion, I'll ask for it! Think about what you say before you talk."
Usually, he'd be angry that I would doubt his authority(权威), but this time, he accepted what I had said. A sense of pride rose up in me. It had been a short drive, but it had been the best car ride of my life.
Everyone wants to live a happy life. Everyone talks about happiness. But what makes us feel really happy? What can we get from happiness?
Well, scientists from a university in New York found that people who are happy and positive about life live longer. A happy man can be much healthier, too.
There was also a study about happiness in Britain. Researchers found that eating a family meal at least three times a week is the key to happiness. Because it helps build a strong relationship between parents and their children.
Money makes the world go round, but it is not everything. Now people are richer than before, but they feel less happier than ever. However, another study found that money can buy people happiness, but only when people spend it in a right way.
How much happiness can you feel? If you want to be happy, you can go for it.
It had been some time since Jack had seen the old man. In fact, in the rush of his busy life, Jack had little time to think about the past and often no time to spend with his wife and son. He was working on his future, and nothing could stop him.
Over the phone, his mother told him, "Mr. Belser died last night. The funeral(葬礼) is Wednesday." Memories flashed through his mind as he sat quietly remembering his childhood (童年) days.
"Jack, did you hear me?"
"Oh, sorry, Mom. Yes, I heard you. It's been so long since I thought of him. I'm sorry, but I honestly thought he died years ago," Jack said.
"Well, he didn't forget you. Every time I saw him he'd ask how you were doing. He'd think of the many days you spent with him." Mom told him.
"He spent a lot of time teaching me things he thought were important…Mom, I'll be there for the funeral," Jack said.
Busy as he was, he kept his word. Mr. Belser's funeral was small. He had no children of his own, and most of his relatives had passed away.
The night before he had to return home, Jack and his Mom stopped to see the old house next door one more time. Every step held memories. Every picture, every corner… Jack stopped suddenly.
"What's wrong, Jack?" his Mom asked.
"The box is gone," he said.
"What box?" Mom asked.
"There was a small gold box that he kept locked on top of his desk. I must have asked him a thousand times what was inside. All he'd ever tell me was ‘the thing I value most'," Jack said.
"Now I'll never know what was so valuable to him," Jack said sadly.
Returning to his office the next day, he found a package on his desk. The return address caught his attention.
"Mr. Harold Belser" it read.
There inside the small gold box he found a beautiful gold pocket watch, he opened it. Inside he found these words "Jack, Thanks for your time! Harold Belser."
A few years ago, my two-year-old son pointing at a dozen of “stood” color marker-pens, cheered excitedly, “Mummy, look! I did it.” With the encouragement of such a 1, he quickly collected another handful of long and thin ball-pens, trying to do the same-making them stand up on the table. Little by little, his face 2— red and finally he cried out, “Mummy, help!”
3 all the ball-pens in his hand had either sharp or round ends, I said casually, “Mummy can't help you on this.” But immediately he cried loudly and fell to the floor. A moment later, he ran back to the table, and4 trying to keep the ball-pens standing up.
Without knowing why the ball-pens can; t stand up, my son had accepted the impossibility after many times of 5tries. He put aside all the ball-pens, and kept only those marker-pens for this standing up “game”. This time he succeeded in this way. Clearly, he already learned to let go of this useless try.
Being persistent is not easy. But sometimes, it is even harder to let go. In our daily life, perhaps many headaches can be6 if we know how to realize those unlikely achievable goals, and then decisively let go of them immediately.
One day, when a successful businessman opened1door of his car, a dog was sleeping under his car suddenly came out and bit(咬)his leg! He threw a stone at the dog, but he was not able to hit it.2 angry he was!3 he arrived at his office, the businessman called a meeting of the workers. He took out his anger on them. Slowly, the businessman's anger spread(传播)through the company.
The businessman was still angry after4home. His wife asked him, "Why are you so late today?" The man shouted, "I didn't go to the office to play soccer. I went to work. 5don't ask such stupid questions!"
His wife was troubled about being shouted at for no reason. Their son was watching TV and the wife6her anger on their son. "This is all you do. You are not7 in studying at all! Turn off the TV now!" she shouted.
The son became angry, too. He walked out of his house and saw a dog passing by. He picked up a stone and threw8 at the dog angrily. The dog ran away, barking in pain.
Sometimes, when we are angry about something, we might take out our anger9others. We should learn10 our anger.
Today I woke up early. While I was reading, I was listening to relaxing music on my phone.
When I realized that one of the songs sounded like a Chinese melody(旋律), I closed my eyes. I found myself in the bamboo field. Then l saw a big Chinese palace. I saw a bell on the door of each room. When the wind blew, the bells moved and made a relaxing sound.
I turned my head and saw a lot of beautiful flowers on the trees. All those looked like a pink carpet(地毯). Suddenly, l heard a bird singing. I looked for it everywhere and finally I saw it in one of the trees. The bird had wonderful colorful feathers (羽毛) such as deep green, cherry red, bright yellow, black and white. I was amazed by everything here. "l wish to stay here for the rest of my life," I said to myself.
That's why I like listening to music. It can take me to another world.

A. And some of the flowers fell onto the ground. B. I thought it was the most beautiful bird that I had ever seen. C. After having breakfast, I started to read a book. D. when the song finally ended. I woke up to reality(现实). E. I walked in and started to enjoy it. |
Life comes in a package. This package includes happiness and sadness, failure and success, hope and despair. Life is a learning process. Experiences in life teach us new lessons and make us a better person. With each passing day we learn to deal with kinds of situations.
Love plays an important role in our lives. Love makes you feel wanted. Without love a person could be cruel. In the early stage of our life, our parents are the ones who show us with unconditional—love and care, they teach us about what is right and wrong good and bad. But we always tend to take this for granted(认为理所应当). It is only after marriage and having kids that a person understands and becomes sensitive to others' feelings.
Happiness achieved by bringing a smile on other's face gives a certain level of fulfillment(成就) Peace of mind makes you feel happy. No mind is happy without peace. We realize the true worth of happiness when we are sad. Sadness comes from the death of a loved one or the failure. But all of these things will pass away.
Failure is the way to success, and it helps us to touch the sky, teaches us to survive and shows us a specific way. Success brings in money, fame, pride and self—respect.
Hope is what keeps life going. Parents always hope their children will do well. Hope makes us dream. Hope builds on patience. Life teaches us not to despair even in the darkest hour, because after every night there is a day.
Life teaches us not to regret over yesterday, for it has passed and is beyond our control. Tomorrow is unknown, for it could either be bright or dull. So what we can choose is to work hard today, so that we will enjoy a better tomorrow.

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is one of the great works by Mark Twain. The book is so interesting. Even today, it is quite popular among kids. Although I am in my thirties, the book remains one of my favorites. After re-reading the book recently, I have learned an important lesson from Tom Sawyer. In our daily lives, we are often given some boring or tiring tasks. What's in your mind when your mom tells you to clean the floor? Have you ever wanted to complain(抱怨)? I think most people have. |
|
Tom Sawyer, however, thought "differently" when he was given a boring task. One Saturday morning, Aunt Polly told Tom to paint the fence(篱笆). Tom's friend Ben Rogers happened to walk past. Instead of complaining, Tom told Ben that he felt "excited" about the task. "Only one in a thousand—maybe even two thousand—boys can do this!" Tom said.
Tom's words made Ben interested in the task. He even gave Tom his apple so that he could have a chance to paint the fence. If Tom had thought about nothing but complaining, he would have had a bad day painting the fence.
This story teaches me a valuable lesson: Complaining is useless. The next time you are given a boring or tiring task, don't complain. Unlike what happens in the story of Tom Sawyer, it is unlikely that someone will come and do the work for you. However, without complaining, you'll feel better and perhaps even do a better job!
My father is a1. He makes delicious food for the workers in a factory. The workers love him very much. I also love him, 2sometimes he can be "stupid".
One day, I went3with him. When we got home , he wanted to know how much money we had spent in the shop. Suddenly, he told me something was4. We got 50 yuan more than we should.
"That's great! You can buy me the5book. " I said. My father said nothing but asked me to go back to the shop together. I didn't want to go back because6knew it. It was stupid to go back.
"It will not be7!Being honest is very important. " my father shouted at me8. I looked into his9and knew he was right.
When we gave back the money , the salesgirl thanked us a lot. On our way home, my father stopped me and10, "Do you still want that cartoon book? " I looked at my "stupid" father and replied loudly, "Dad, you' re the greatest!"
