Annie, a neighbor's daughter, is a sweet girl but just a bit shy. Her birthday's coming, but she felt lonely and was not happy. Her family is quite small and poor, so there wouldn't be any birthday visitors.
I wanted to send her a special gift to make her happy. I got an idea! I bought some balloons, streamers(彩带), birthday hats, and so on at a store.
I took a small recorder(录音机) and asked three friends to sing Happy Birthday and send some birthday wishes to her. It was funny! When other people found out what we were doing, they added their voices, so it really sounded like we had a party going on!
Then I put a card, some mini balloons and streamers in a beautiful box. When I arranged(布置) everything, it was like opening a mini birthday party!
Finally, I added a pack of cupcakes and a box of birthday candles and then sent it to Annie.
I got a call a few days later. Annie said her roommate and one of their neighbors in the dorm all liked the gift. She sounded so happy and I was so glad that she had some friends to share with her. And Annie told me it was the funniest birthday she can remember.

When most of the students sat quietly, one student came to Whitney. She reached out her hand and introduced herself. She asked 9 she could be Whitney's friend. Whitney was surprised and happy. She 10 and reached her hand out, too.
Their friendship lasted all through the college.

Most parents send Care packages(包裹)and gifts to their Children when they're away at university. Terri Cox, from Leonardtown, Maryland, isn't one of those 1.
A few weeks ago, Terri sent her son 18-year-old Connor, who's now 2 at Westminster College in Pennsylvania, a package. 3 Connor first got the package, he thought it was a usual gift filled with necessities(必需品).
"I was 4 because it's like Christmas when you get gifts from 5 especially when you're in College," he said. But as Connor 6 the package, he found the things inside were quite different from what he had 7 It wasn't a gift or a Care package. It was something he'd 8 while at home for the Christmas Break- his rubbish.
The box was filled with trash(垃圾)-everything he was too 9 to take out when his mother had asked him to over Christmas.
In fact, Connor didn't do all of his 10 at home at all. So Mom Terri got the idea to post his rubbish to him to 11 him. Connor didn't understand 12 his mom did this to him until he gave her a Call." 13 isn't usually strict, and I didn't see this as a Big punishment(惩罚). It was more of a(n)14 reminder(提醒)that I have duties(职责). And we have a good laugh on the phone," he said.
Connor later said that the rubbish he had 15 in the Box was only a part of what he was asked to take out. Where was the rest? They were hidden in his Bedroom drawers(抽屉).
Thinking what happens to rubbish if left for a long time, let's hope Terri find the rest fast.
Sitting on the side of the highway waiting to catch speeding drivers, a police officer saw a car driving along at 22 miles per hour.
He thought to himself, "This driver is just as dangerous as a 1!" So he turned on his lights and pulled the driver over.
Getting closer to the car, he noticed that there were 2 old ladies, two in the front seat and three in the back wide eyed and pale faced.
The driver, who knew 3 about what happened, said to him, "Officer, I don't understand. I was doing exactly the speed limit! What seems to be the 4?"
"Ma'am," the officer replied, "you weren't speeding, but you should know that driving 5 than the speed limit can also be a danger to other drivers. The same as a speeder."
"No, sir. I was doing the speed limit—exactly twenty-two miles an hour!'' The old woman said in a 6 voice. The officer, almost unable to control his chuckle, explained to her that "22" was the route 7, not the speed limit.
A bit embarrassed, the woman smiled widely and thanked the officer for 8 her misunderstanding.
"But 9 I let you go, ma'am, I have to ask... Is everyone in this car OK? These women seem to be 10 badly and they haven't made a single sound this whole time," the officer asked.
"Oh, they'll be all right in a minute. We just got off Route 119."

With the string(s) in hand, the son started flying the kite. Soon, the kite was high up in the sky a while, he said "father, it seems that the string is stopping the kite from flying higher. If we cut it, it free and fly even higher. Can we cut it?" The father didn't reply, but just cut the string off the reel(线轴). Suddenly, the kite began to go higher, which made the son much happier.
However, his surprise the kite was coming down. They waited for quite some time (slow), it fell onto the grass. The son felt upset and asked, "I thought that after cutting the string, the kite would fly higher. Why did it fall down?"
The father smiled and said, "The role of the string was not stopping the kite from flying higher, but helping it stay in the sky, because the kite can't fly up by (it). By using the string, you help the kite go up in the right (direct). When you cut the string, it could not support the kite."
In our life, we may sometimes feel like there are certain things that are holding us back and stopping us from growing. But fact, these might be the things that support us most. We can really grow up and become stronger by realizing the importance of these things.
The journey my daughter Cathy has had with her swimming is as long as it is beautiful.
Cathy suffered some terrible1in her early childhood. After years of treatment, she finally became healthy.
Two years ago, while Cathy was watching the Olympics, a dream came into her sweet little head-to be a swimmer. Last summer, she wanted to2our local swimming team. She practiced hard and finally3it. The team practice, however, was a hard start. She coughed and choked and could hardly pull through her first few weeks. Hearing her coughing seriously one night, I decided to4her from it all. But Cathy woke me up early next morning, wearing her swimsuit ready to go! I told her she shouldn't swim after a whole night's coughing, but she refused to5and insisted she go.
From that day on, Cathy kept swimming and didn't6a single practice. She always tried her best to be the best. My ten-year-old was growing and changing right before my eyes, into this determined human being. There were moments of sadness of course: often she would be the last swimmer in the race. It was difficult for Cathy to accept that she wasn't a7— ever. But that didn't stop her from trying.
Then came the final awards ceremony(颁奖典礼) at the end of the year. Cathy didn't expect any award but was still there to cheer for her friends. As the ceremony was nearing the end, I suddenly heard the head coach announcing, "The highest honor goes to Cathy!" Looking around, he continued," Cathy has inspired us with her8and warmth.9skills and talents bring great success, the most valuable asset(财富)one can hold is the heart."
It was the greatest10of my daughter's life. With all she had been through in her ten years, this was the hour of true success.
Bo, a golden retriever(猎犬), won this year's Dog Hero Award from the Ken L Ration dog food company. Bo acted1last June. Bo and his owners, Rob and Laurie Roberts, were going down the Colorado River in a 16-foot boat. The June2was Bo's first time in a boat.
Laurie Roberts said, "Things were fine3a 6-foot wave broke in front of us and filled the boat with water. Another big wave caught us from the back and turned the4over." Rob was thrown clear, but Laurie and Bo were unable to move out5the boat. "Every time I tried to6, my head hit the boat," Laurie said. "I hit the bottom of the river several times. I7I was drowning(溺水)."
Rob picked up the story, "I reached the land and8Laurie," he said. "I saw Bo swim out from under the overturned boat. Then he9and dived(下潜). Soon he came back up, pulling Laurie by the hair." Laurie, who was10and breathless, tried to catch Bo. But the dog stayed out of reach as is knowing11of them would drown if Laurie pulled him under.12Laurie caught Bo's tail. He13her 30 yards to the land. Laurie was cut and bleeding, but she was14.
"If it hadn't been for Bo,15wouldn't be here." Laurie told everyone at the Dog Hero awards dinner.
When Millie got up this morning, she found it was a beautiful spring day. She saw some 1 in the sky, but she didn't think about them. She woke up her dog, Eddie, and put him in the 2. Then she drove out into the country 3 a picnic with her dog.
When they got to a big tree, Millie stopped her car and told Eddie to get off the car. They began to play games under the 4. How happy they, were! An hour later, the wind began to blow and it turned5.
Millie and Eddie were warm from running, so they didn't feel cold. When Eddie was playing with the ball, Millie6 snowflakes (雪花) in the sky. She called Eddie, picked up the picnic things and got 7 into the car. As she was driving home, the8 became heavier and heavier. Soon all Millie could see was white all around9. The road became slippery(滑的) and she had to drive very10. Then the car hit into a piece of ice and it went around in circles. She got her mobile phone and asked for 11 quickly. They waited for about an hour because it was 12 for the police to drive in the snow. At 13, the police came to 14them. Millie was very thankful, she said she would listen to the weather report(天气预报) 15 going on a picnic next time.
As a teenager, I felt I was always letting people down. Once I1my friend Penelope to my home. I noticed that all my family members seemed to like Penelope2than me.
I felt very3. I even thought they didn't love me. I wondered whether they would4me if I died some day. So I told my mom, "Penelope is more patient than I have ever been. You must want her to be your5rather than me."
My mom6that though Penelope was a lovely girl, no one could replace me in the family. She said I was the only person who could fill my role. She made me realize that even if I made mistakes, I was a beloved member of the family who could never be replaced.
From then on, I tried to7who I was and what made me special. My view of8changed. I started to act in a positive way toward my life, and I was happy about who I really was. Each of us holds a9place in the world. You are special, no matter what others say or what you may think. So10about being replaced. You can't be.
I love volunteering in my free time. I once1on a farm in France for a month during my summer holiday.
On the farm, I2fifteen horses and sheep. I found I was a terrible "father" ,but I was quite3that I made some great friends and also 4my French. In fact, you 5go to other countries to volunteer. I've had lots of volunteer experiences at home, too.
Helping others makes us feel good but volunteering can 6other good things, too. I once volunteered in a clothes shop so I could fill my wardrobe(衣柜) 7lots of nice cheap clothes.
Volunteering is really fun, 8 my favorite part of volunteering is sharing stories. My 9 on the farm gave me many funny stories to tell. Talking to volunteers from different countries also helped me 10 more about the world.
I was on my way back from vacation. I felt little 1 so I walked to the dining car. When came back, the train 2 at station. An old woman 3 with a heavy bag. I came to her and said, "4 I help you?" The bag was really too 5 for her, she nodded (点头). Her seat was just next to 6. She sat down and 7 me. A moment later, we began 8 with each other. 9 we knew more about each other, it was 10 for us to get off. She thanked me again, especially (尤其) for our 11. She said that I gave her a wonderful 12.
On our way out, she pointed at 13 women at the exit (出口) . She told me they were her 14 and granddaughter. Then we said goodbye to each other.
We are all not alone. When we bring others happiness, we 15 bring happiness to ourselves.
Will you put others' needs before your own? What 1will you get if you do? Here is an experience of mine.
It was a wet day and I had a2time. I was busy and everyone I talked to was in a bad mood. What's more, I went out without breakfast and I left my3 at home. So I couldn't get lunch and was terribly hungry.
When I finished my work,I4 to ask my wife to meet me at the door with some money so that I could quickly go to buy 5 .Then I quickly made my way home in hope of eating my 6 meal of the day at 5:00 p.m.
As I was halfway home, my wife told me by phone that a friend of ours was in 7and needed a lift(搭便车)home. My mind said," I will get him 8I get the meal." But my mouth said," All right, I'll give him a9 ."
He jumped in the car with a smile on his face and repeated how 10he was that I would drive him home. He told me he usually walked home from his company but that day the 11stopped him from making that journey.
12was a mess(混乱). A drive to him normally took 10 minutes, but that day it took 30 minutes.
Now you would guess the person that I was helping is a 13friend of mine. But, in fact, he is a friend of a friend.
I wonder if I will ever see this person again, but I feel glad I was there when he14 me.
So you will feel yourself helpful and useful when you15more about others.
