In an ideal world, people would not test medicines on animals. Such experiments are stressful and sometimes painful for animals, and expensive and time-consuming for people. Yet animal experimentation is still needed to help bridge vast gaps in medical knowledge. That is why there are some 50 to 100 million animals used in research around the world each year.

Europe, on the whole, has the world's most restrictive (严格的) laws on animal experiments. Even so,its scientists use some 12 million animals a year, most of them mice and rats, for medical research. Official statistics show that just 1.1 million animals are used in research in America each year. But that is misleading. The American authorities do not think mice and rats are worth counting and, as these are the most common laboratory animals, the true figure is much higher. Japan and China have even less comprehensive (全面的) data than America.

Now Europe is reforming the rules governing animal experiments by restricting the number of animals used in labs. Alternatives to animal testing, such as using human tissue or computer models, are now strongly recommended. In addition, sharing all research results freely should help to reduce the number of animals for scientific use. At present, scientists often share only the results of successful experiments. If their findings do not fit the hypothesis (假设) being tested, the work never sees the light of day. This practice means wasting time, money, and animals' lives in endlessly repeating the failed experiments.

Animal experimentation has taught humanity a great deal and saved countless lives. It needs to continue, even if that means animals sometimes suffer. Europe's new measures should eventually both reduce the number of animals used in experiments and improve the way in which scientific research is conducted.

  1. (1) What is the main idea of this passage?
A . The success of animal experiments should be ensured. B . A ban on the use of animals in the lab should be enforced. C . Greater efforts need to be taken to reduce the number of lab animals. D . Scientists should be required to share their research results with each other.
  2. (2) Which of the following statements is true about animals used in the lab?
A . America uses only about 1.1 million lab animals per year. B . Europe does not use mice and rats as lab animals at all. C . Britain does not use as many lab animals as China does. D . Japan has limited data on the number of lab animals used each year.
  3. (3) Which of the following is mentioned as an alternative to replace animal experiments?
A . Statistical studies. B . Computer models. C . DNA planted in animals. D . Tissue from dead animals.
  4. (4) What usually happens to unsuccessful animal experiments?
A . They are not made known to the public.  B . They are made into teaching materials. C . They are collected for future publication. D . They are not removed from the research topic list.

Global Positioning System (GPS) is now a part of everyday driving in many countries. It is a space-based system that provides position and time information in all weather conditions. GPS can help people get to where they want to go.When this happens, the driver is often to blame. Sometimes a GPS error is responsible. Most often, it is a combination of the two.

Barry Brown, a GPS technologist, took an incident as an example. His friend once flew to an airport in the eastern United States. There he borrowed a GPS-equipped car to use. He wrongly plugged in the home address in the west. It wasn't until he was driving for thirty minutes that he realized it. Mr. Brown says this is a common human error. But he says, “One problem is that GPS has a very small screen and it can just tell you the next turn.

“The Normal and Natural Troubles of Driving with GPS” lists several areas where GPS can cause difficulties. They include maps that are outdated, incorrect or difficult to understand. GPS may fail due to these reasons and then lead to confusion for the drivers.

Although GPS sometimes causes difficulties when people are driving, the most attractive point of this system is its 100% coverage on the planet. It is important for you to have to know what you are doing when you use GPS. You need to have the “ability” to be able to use GPS because it sometimes goes wrong.

A. There are quite a few situations showing the problems of using GPS.

B. That means that it is not really telling you about going to the wrong place.

C. This space-based system is an important tool for civil and commercial users.

D. But sometimes it sends you to the wrong place or leaves you completely lost.

E. They also contain timing problems related to when GPS commands are given.

F. Advances in technology play an active role in modernizing GPS in many ways.

G. To make GPS well used, you need a good understanding of how drivers and GPS work.

It's nice being nice to others; it's also great to give people a hand. However, if you start to hurt yourself by doing so, then this is not so healthy. If you fear that you might fall into this category, the following tips will help you to stand up for yourself and regain your self-confidence.

Although you may often stay silent if something is wrong or bothers you, it is better to speak your mind right away. You don't have to be rude, but you do have to be firm and direct. Don't do things for others if you don't really want to. Speak up, and soon others will be seeing you in a whole new light.

    Start small.

This will allow you to practice being brave and self-confident. Tell a person who has cut in line in front of you to move to the back of the line, or tell a salesperson to do that. Before long, you will be confident enough to stand up to your friends and family members.

    Judge well.

When dealing with others, you have to exercise good judgment. If a colleague isn't doing his part, you should rightfully demand that he start doing so. However, if a taxi cuts you off in traffic, just let it go.

Rome wasn't built in a day. If you want to get back again after having been a pushover(耳软心活的人), it's best to take one step at a time.

A. Express yourself.

B. Regain your confidence.

C. Start by speaking up for yourself with strangers.

D. Everyone has the right to live without being judged.

E. If you slip back into the pushover mode every once in a while, don't blame yourself.

F. Sadly, some people are so easily pushed around that they come to be seen as pushovers.

G. It's one thing to be confident, but quite another to forcefully say no to an unreasonable request.
