A popular Chinese saying usually causes（引起） two different discussions.The saying says"Du wanjuan shu，xing wanli lu".It means"to read ten thousand books and travel ten thousand miles." 

This saying comes from a book called Notes from the Painting-Meditation Studio.It was written by Dong Qichang，a famous painter in the Ming Dynasty （明朝）.Dong's saying would like people to read more to get knowledge（知识），then put it into practice and open up their minds at the same time. 

But later，some people changed the meaning.They thought it meant， "Traveling ten thousand miles is better than reading ten thousand books." The second idea clearly means that experience is more important and meaningful than what people can get from books. 

The two ideas，no matter how you understand them，both compare （比较） reading with traveling. 

This is not the only Chinese idea.Foreigners also have similar sayings.For example，Augustine of Hippo，a philosopher（哲学家），once said， "The world is a book.If you don't travel，you read only one page." David Rockefeller，an American banker said， "I love traveling and I learned a lot through travel as much as I studied at school."
