When it comes to U.S. middle school science and engineering, girls rule. Girls took the top five prizes at the 2019 Broadcom MASTERS, a competition for middle school students across the country.

The winners were announced last month. The champion was 14-year-old Alaina Gassler who designed a system to make driving safer by reducing the number of blind spots, the areas that drivers cannot see outside their vehicles, which lead to about 840,000 accidents a year nationwide. Alaina's system helps drivers see "through" the A-frame pillar(支柱), the part of the vehicle at the front that joins the top and front window, which is important for safety and cannot be removed. Alaina used a camera to help drivers look "through" the structure to see what is blocked. The camera sends video to a device that shows images on the other side of the pillar. The driver then can see what's in the blind spot.

Alaina said that when she heard her name called as the winner, "it was so unexpected". She received a $25,000 prize for her invention and told Popular Mechanics she could make improvements on her device with the money. Alaina said she wanted to improve the picture, making it easy to see in any kind of weather, or at any time of day. She also told the magazine she hoped to sell her idea.

"Competitors of 2019, including Alaina, are already leaders in their fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM)," said Paula Golden, president of the Broadcom Foundation. "These young innovators give every one of us hope for the future."

The Broadcom MASTERS competition is a project of the Society for Science &the Public. The term MASTERS is short for Math, Applied Science, Technology, and Engineering for Rising Stars. The program was set up to motivate young people to attend college and pursue careers in STEM fields.

  1. (1) What earned Alaina the first place at the 2019 Broadcom MASTERS?
A . Introducing technology to test drivers' skills. B . Improving a device to send emergency signals. C . Designing a camera to monitor the road conditions. D . Inventing a system to show drivers the blind areas.
  2. (2) What can we learn about Alaina from Paragraph 3?
A . She has been dreaming about the prize for long. B . She wants to advertise her idea in more magazines. C . She invites people to test her system by taking photos. D . She may spend the prize money improving her device.
  3. (3) What's Paula's attitude towards the competitors?
    A . Doubtful. B . Negative. C . Positive. D . Unconcerned.
  4. (4) What does the author intend to do in the last paragraph?
A . Add some background information. B . Provide some advice for the readers. C . Summarize the previous paragraphs. D . Raise a new topic for discussion.

Tourists visiting the Canary Islands can often hear locals communicating over long distances by whistling (吹口哨)—not a tune, but the Spanish language. The locals are communicating in Silbo, a much more widespread use of whistled languages. In at least 80 cultures worldwide, people have developed whistled versions of their local languages.

Whistled languages are almost always developed by traditional cultures that live in mountainous regions or in dense forests. That's because whistled speech carries much farther than ordinary speech or shouting, says Julien Meyer, a linguist who explores the topic of whistled languages. Skilled whistlers can reach 120 decibels (分贝)—louder than a car speaker. That lets people communicate when they cannot get close enough to shout.

Whistled languages work because many of the key elements of speech can be imitated(模仿) in a whistle. We distinguish one speech sound from another by minor differences in their sound frequency patterns.

However, whistled languages are disappearing rapidly all over the world. Modernization is largely to blame, says Meyer, who points to roads as the biggest factor. "That's why you still find whistled speech only in places that are very, very remote," he says.

Fortunately, there is still a ray of hope. UNESCO has listed two whistled languages—Silbo in the Canary Islands, and a whistled Turkish—as elements of the world's intangible cultural heritage. Such attention can lead to conservation efforts. In the Canary Islands, for example, Silbo is now taught in schools. "If people hadn't made that effort, Silbo would probably have disappeared," says Meyer. There, at least, the future of the whistled language looks bright.

  1. (1) What can be learned about Silbo?
A . It is an endangered tune. B . It is used to entertain tourists. C . It is used in more than 80 cultures. D . It is a whistled version of Spanish.
  2. (2) What are whistled languages mainly used to do?
A . Pass on secret information. B . Get messages across over long distances. C . Imitate the sound patterns of other languages. D . Show minor differences between speech sounds.
  3. (3) Why are whistled languages disappearing according to Meyer?
A . Contact with modernity. B . Lack of skilled teachers.   C . Difficulty in learning them. D . Popularity of official languages.
  4. (4) What is the author's attitude towards the future of Silbo?
    A . Uncertain. B . Optimistic.          C . Dissatisfied. D . Uncaring.

Livestreaming (直播) through channels such as Amazon Live and QVC is an increasingly popular way to sell goods online. It usually lasts between 5 and 10 minutes, and someone promotes a product. Viewers can then readily buy it by clicking on a link.

We analyzed (分析) 99,451 sales cases on a livestream selling platform and matched them with actual sales cases. In terms of time, that is equal to over 2 million 30-second television advertisements.

To determine the emotional (情绪的) expression of the salesperson, we used two deep learning models: a face model and an emotion model. The face model discovers the presence or absence of a face in a frame of a video stream. The emotion model then determines the probability that a face is exhibiting any of the six basic human emotions: happiness, sadness, surprise, anger, fear or disgust. For example, smiling signals a high probability of happiness, while an off-putting expression usually points toward anger.

We wanted to see the effect of emotions expressed at different times in the sales cases so we counted probabilities for each emotion for all 62 million frames in our database. We then combined these probabilities with other possible aspects that might drive sales — such as price and product characteristics — to judge the effect of emotion.

We found that, perhaps unsurprisingly, when salespeople show more negative emotions — such as anger and disgust — the volume of sales went down. But we also found that a similar thing happened when the salespeople show high levels of positive emotions, such as happiness or surprise.

A likely explanation, based on our research, is that smiling can be disgusting because it lacks true feelings and can reduce trust in the seller. A seller's happiness may be taken as a sign that the seller is gaining interests at the customer's expense.

  1. (1) What can we know about the livestreaming to sell goods online?
A . It challenges the physical economy. B . It helps big company sell all goods. C . It is very convenient for the buyers. D . It helps the sellers develop fixed expressions.
  2. (2) What does the underlined word "off-putting" mean in paragraph 3?
    A . Unhappy. B . Embarrassed. C . Surprised. D . Shy.
  3. (3) How do customers feel about the seller's smiling?
A . They feel thankful. B . They feel happy. C . They feel so tired. D . They feel cheated.
  4. (4) Which of the following could be the best title for the text?
A . Livestreamers Sell Products Successfully. B . Expressions Affect Selling Products Online. C . Smiling Can Increase the Sales in Reality. D . Emotions and Faces: What's the Difference?

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It is said that the best time of playing the piano is when he or she is a kid. But when Max came to his first piano lesson in his mother's car, he was already 11 years old. I preferred students begin at an earlier age, but due to his insistence(坚持), I took him as a student. As much as Max tried, he lacked the sense of tone and basic rhythm. At the end of each lesson, he'd say, "My mom's going to hear me play someday." But it seemed hopeless. I only knew his mother from a distance as she waited in her aged car, but never stepped in.

After 2 months, one day Max didn't come to our lessons any more. I thought about calling him but assumed, because of his lack of ability, that he had decided to quit. I also was glad that he stopped coming — he was a bad advertisement for my teaching!

Later, in order to celebrate the New Year, I mailed to the students' homes a letter on the upcoming concert. Surprisingly, Max received and asked me if he could be in the concert. I told him that the concert was not for dropouts(辍学者), but for current pupils. He said that his mom had been sick and unable to take him to piano lessons but he was still practicing. I didn't know what led me to agree eventually.

At the concert night, the hall was packed with parents and friends. I put up Max last in the program. I thought that any damage he would do would come at the end of the program and the negative effect would reduce to the least.

Surprisingly, the concert went off successfully. Then Max came up on stage. His clothes were wrinkled and his hair looked messy. "Why didn't his mother at least make him comb his hair for this special night?" I thought.
