Vennesla Library and Culture House, Norway

The library is one of the most beautiful libraries in the world.  Opened in 2011, this library is an important site for concerts, theatrical performances and film screenings.  The design of the library is unique.  The building is supported by 27 laminated (层压的) wood arches that hold the roof up.

Stacja Kultura, Poland

Thanks to a recent restoration, a station that was once in ruins underwent an architectural change.  The library might seem unremarkable from the outside, but the innovative project and its division into a train station, public library and cultural center have certainly made this building worth a visit.

Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, United States

The library is the main source of literary archives (档案), ancient manuscripts and rare books at Yale University, and it's visited by students and researchers from around the world. Completed in 1963, the library is home to the Bollingen Prize for Poetry which is awarded biennially, and the Windham-Campbell Prizes which are awarded annually for fiction, literary essays, poetry, and theater.

Gelje Sherpa was leading a Chinese climber up Mount Qomolangma when he spotted a Malaysian climber in need of help, and the two men then abandoned the summit (顶峰) in order to rescue the Malaysian climber. They were in the "death zone", an area near the summit of Mount Qomolangma where temperatures are extremely low and where there isn't enough oxygen to breathe.

The Malaysian climber had "nothing" and was on the brink (边缘) of death. Gelje recalled that no one was helping him, no friends, no oxygen, no Sherpas with him and no guides. Stopping at an altitude where the body was rapidly deteriorating (恶化) and where many deaths occur was quite dangerous for him. However, other climbers and guides just focused on the summit, so that they didn't notice the Malaysian climber's state.

According to Nepali officials, 12 people have died, and five are missing on Qomolangma as the spring climbing season comes to an end.  Gelje, the Sherpa, said there were a few likely reasons why this season has been so deadly.  The weather has been poor and extremely cold, and some climbers lack experience or sufficient training for such a high altitude.

Gelje was guiding a Chinese climber to the summit when he made the decision that they would abandon their journey to save the Malaysian climber.

It was nearly an impossible task: Gelje had to secure the climber to his back and carry him down 600 meters for about six hours before another guide joined the rescue.  They then took turns carrying the climber, wrapped in a sleeping mat, sometimes having to drag him through the snow, before reaching a helicopter that carried them down to base camp.

The rescue, which took place on May 18, 2023, was massively challenging.  Gelje has previously carried out more than 55 rescues during his work as a guide, some very long operations, but he said the rescue was the hardest in his life.

  1. (1) When did Gelje meet the climber in danger?
A . After reaching the summit. B . During the rest in the "death zone". C . On the way to the top of the mount. D . During the journey back to base camp.
  2. (2) Why did others ignore the climber in need of help?
A . They didn't know the climber. B . They were at a dangerous altitude. C . They lacked experience of helping people. D . They only cared about their arrival at the summit.
  3. (3) What can we infer about Gelje from the text?
    A . He's an experienced coach. B . He's careful and skilled at climbing. C . He s a rescue worker on Qomolangma. D . He's irresponsible for the climber he led.
  4. (4) What can be the best title for the text?
    A . A Hard Rescue for a Climber B . A Difficult Task from a Guide C . A "Death Zone" Blocking Climbers D . A Sad Decision to Give Up Climbing

Previous studies have found that the number of years spent in school relates to cognition (认知) later in life, but few studies have examined the influence of educational quality.

"Our study establishes a link between high-quality education and better later-life cognition and suggests that increased investment in schools could be a powerful strategy to improve cognitive health among older adults in the United States," said Jennifer Manly, senior author of the study.

The study, led by Manly and Dominika Šeblová, a postdoctoral research scientist at Columbia, used data from Project Talent, a 1960 survey of high school students across the United States, and follow-up data collected in the Project Talent Aging Study.  The researchers examined the relationships between six indicators (指标) of school quality and several measures of cognitive performance in participants nearly 60 years after they left high school.  Since high-quality schools may be especially beneficial for people from disadvantaged backgrounds, the researchers also examined whether associations differed by geography, gender, race and ethnicity.

The researchers found that attending a school with a higher number of teachers with graduate training was the most consistent predictor of better later-life cognition, especially in language fluency (for example, coming up with words within a category).  Attending a school with a high number of graduate-level teachers was about equal to the difference in cognition between a 70-year-old and someone who is one to three years older.  Other indicators of school quality were related to some, but not all, measures of cognitive performance.

According to Manly and Šeblová, there may be many reasons explaining why attending schools with well-trained teachers may affect later-life cognition. "Instruction provided by more experienced and knowledgeable teachers might be more intellectually inspiring and provide additional neural or cognitive benefits," said Šeblová, "and attending higher-quality schools may also influence life track, leading to university education and greater earnings, which are in turn linked to better cognition in later life. "

  1. (1) What is the author's purpose in writing the text?
A . To remind the public of seniors' health. B . To look into investment in schools. C . To achieve the fairness of humans. D . To attach importance to education.
  2. (2) How did Manly and Šeblová conduct the research?
A . By conducting surveys. B . By making comparisons. C . By explaining examples. D . By interviewing the disabled.
  3. (3) What is the result of the study?
A . The physical health determines your future life. B . Good education contributes to good later-life cognition. C . Language fluency is based on postgraduate training. D . Good schools should have many well-trained teachers.
  4. (4) What is Manly and Šeblová's attitude to high-quality school education?
    A . Favorable. B . Doubtful. C . Uncaring. D . Opposing.

Nearly every nation is coming up short — most of them far short — in their efforts to fight climate change, and the world is unlikely to hold warning to the internationally agreed-upon limit, according to a new scientific report.

Gambia, a tiny country in Africa, is the only nation that is cutting emissions (排放) and taking up its share of actions to keep the world from exceeding the Paris Agreement's goal of limiting warming to 1. 5℃ above preindustrial times, according to the report.  Only one industrialized nation — the United Kingdom—is even close to doing what it should to cut emissions of heat-trapping gases and finance clean energy for poorer nations, the Climate Action Tracker(CAT)reported.

Enough nations promised big enough carbon pollution cuts that the CAT said the "emissions gap" — the difference between emissions projections (预测) with the promises and what's required to meet the 1. 5-degree goal — dropped by 11%.

"That momentum (势头) has not been maintained," said Bill Hare, report co-author and CEO of Climate Analytics. "We're running short of countries stepping up with additional emission commitments to close the gap. "

Unlike its previous reports, which just looked at promises to cut carbon pollution and policy changes, the new ratings include money issues.  Finance is critical to climate negotiations this fall in Scotland, so the report examined commitments by rich nations to help pay for clean energy for poor nations, according to Hare.

That hurt the United States and European Union rankings. The report called efforts by the United States, the European Union, Germany and Japan "insufficient" and more in line with global warming of 3℃ since the late 19th century. The world has already warmed by 1. 1℃ since that time, so these countries will make the world 1. 9℃ warmer than it is now.

Hare said Brazil and Mexico "went backwards" on their fight to control warming. The report lists Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore and Thailand at the bottom.

  1. (1) What does the underlined word "exceeding" in paragraph 2 probably mean?
    A . Limiting. B . Changing.  C . Working towards. D . Going beyond.
  2. (2) What do Hare's words in paragraph 4 mean?
A . The global warming will be soon controlled. B . Global nations are struggling to bridge "emissions gap". C . More countries are needed to solve the global climate change. D . Many nations keep the promises of carbon pollution reduction.
  3. (3) According to Hare, what will hold back some countries from reducing carbon pollution?
    A . Additional emission. B . Climate negotiations. C . Smaller population. D . Insufficient funds.
  4. (4) In which section of a website can we find the text?
    A . Economy. B . Environment. C . Technology. D . Entertainment.

Every body is different and your sleep needs might not be the same as everyone else's. . It might be because you're either not getting enough sleep or you're getting too much! Start by getting the standard 8 hours of sleep on a regular schedule for a couple of weeks. And then see how you feel? Some people only need 6 hours of sleep, while some might even need 10 hours! . However, you should give your body a chance and lots of time to adjust it.

. When traveling to distant places where you're outside your comfort zone, you'll be forced to take on challenges and actively be alive. Traveling doesn't have to be as expensive as you think, either. If you travel on your own instead of with a touring company, buy early and go places in the off-season, you'll find that it doesn't cost too much money to get away for a little while.

All in all, if you don't feel alive, it might be because you're not really living. When we live a life that's not true to ourselves, we're really living someone else's life and it's easy to feel like we're not really living at all. Lemon duck is a special dish in Wuming, Nanning, Guangxi.  And it (belong) to Guangxi cuisine and is one of the top ten classic dishes in Guangxi.

Wuming lemon duck, also known as Gaofeng lemon duck, originated in Wuming District, Nanning.  Lemon duck first (appear) in the early 1980s.  There was a small shop beside the boundary marker on Yongwu road in Nanning,  provided dishes for drivers all year round.  After continuous development, this famous dish came into being.

9. 短文续写 详细信息

 第二节 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I knew the fearful day would come sooner or later.  However, it came too fast.  I was waiting in the dental clinic, nervous about what was to come.

Seeing my nervousness, my parents told me to sit up, and to take deep breaths to keep calm, which worked.  However, the peace was short-lived.  Almost immediately, my name was called, signaling my turn had come.  I pretended to be deaf but my mother gestured at me to stand up.  I forced myself to step forward and tripped over a toy left lying around by some kid.  My clumsiness (笨拙) got me the attention of everyone in the room.

I had refused my parents' offer to accompany me. I meant to show them that I was brave enough to face the difficulty on my own. Thankfully, I forgot my anxiety as I looked around the dentist's room. Tools of different sizes were arranged neatly in a tray (托盘) on the tiny table which was connected to a chair with buttons and a light hanging right over it. I didn't look at my dentist in the eye as I took my place on the chair nervously. I almost jumped out of the seat when all of a sudden the chair moved and I was lying down facing the bright yellow light.

The dentist spoke in a relaxing voice behind her mask. Everything was going smoothly and I was quite proud of myself. Then something went wrong. I was picking up the cup of water placed next to the chair for patients to rinse (冲洗) their mouths when I caught sight of the dental drill. Panic related to a bad childhood experience involving the drill kicked into me, and I spat out the rinsing water, right into the surprised dentist's face.

注意:1. 续写词数应为 150左右;2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

I froze with awkwardness and my mind went blank.

Seeing the room was in a mess, I felt nervous and helped the dentist stand up from the ground.
