Hi Tim, just ringing to see if you've got the details of the basketball team's trip
for next month.
Yes, I went to the travel agency this morning. First of all we're flying to Scotland. Our
flight leaves at 6.30 in the morning. We're playing four matches there and we'll have
three days free, so we're going to hire a bus to the mountains.
That was wonderful. Where are you going after that?
Greece. We were supposed to be playing five matches there, but two have been called off.
That means there's a bit of free time to sunbathe on the beach.
Great. I hope the weather is good.
I'm sure we'll enjoy it, whatever the weather.
Hi Tim, just ringing to see if you've got the details of the basketball team's trip
for next month.
Yes, I went to the travel agency this morning. Have you read this article about the girl named Sarah who gave up a modelling job?
Of course I have. She lives in the same neighbourhood as me. Why?
Why on earth didn't she take it? She could have made millions.
But at the same time if she doesn't value that. So what? I think it's really nice that
it's not the main thing that she just wants to show herself off. What a wise decision.
Yeah, but all the same. If not for herself she ought to have done it for her family.
Her dad must have felt sick when she turned the offer down.
What on earth for? He's got no right. It's none of his business. I blame him for talking to the
newspapers. He shouldn't have spoken to them in the first place. It's his fault for attracting
all this interest. That's not fair. He's her dad. He didn't want to see her throw away the chance of
a lifetime. That's all. Have you read this article about the girl named Sarah who gave up a modelling
job? Of course I have. Hello everyone. I'm sure you're all familiar with the wonderful game of chess. But have
you ever stopped to think about where it came from and when? Well, we believe the game dates
back to before 600 AD and was first played in what is now Northern India. We think the
form played by Europeans and Americans today travelled through Iran to the main business
centres of Europe by the year 1000. The game was then taken to Northern Europe, so by the
1400s chess was played throughout Europe. There are quite a few forms of the game found
in other parts of the world. For example, one form is played in Japan, another form is played
in China. One person whose name stands out in the history of chess is the chess master
Howard Staunton. Staunton lived in England in the mid 1800s and gave his name to the
chess pieces that are still used in competitions all over the world today. The idea of chess
competitions is relatively recent. The first official competition was played in 1866 in
London and was won by a man called Steinitz. He was, in effect, the world's first official
winner and he held the title until 1894 when he was beaten by a German called Immanuel
Lasker, who in turn lost the title in 1921 to a Cuban called Capa Blanca.
Hello everyone, I'm sure you're all familiar with the wonderful game of chess, but have
you ever stopped to think about where it came from and when?
