While well-known figures like Pablo Picasso and Albert Einstein did their most significant work in their youth, famous American poet Robert Frost and English-born natural scientist Charles Darwin were known as “late bloomers” —people whose talents were not noticeable until later in life. This idea of “peaking” at different times inspired new research from the United States. “Many people believe that creativity is exclusively(独有地)associated with youth, but it really depends on what kind of creativity you're talking about,” said Bruce Weinberg, a professor of economics at the University of Chicago and co-author of the study. According to the study, published earlier this month in the journal De Economist, there are two types of people: conceptual(概念的)and experimental thinkers. To reach this conclusion, researchers took the 31 previous winners of the Nobel Prize in economics and arranged them according to when they did their most significant work, to identify their creative peaks. Some peaked from ages 25—29. Classified as conceptual thinkers, these people think outside of the box, coming up with new ideas before they become used to the conventional way of doing things. The second creative peak came with economists in their 50s. These are experimental thinkers who have been in their fields for a long time. This allows them to learn from errors and experiment with different processes, before eventually finding new solutions. “Whether you hit your creative peak early or late in your career depends on whether you have a conceptual or experimental approach,” said Weinberg. He added that their study isn't limited to economics, saying it can apply to other creative disciplines(知识领域). So if you're struggling to come up with new ideas, don't panic. Your creative peak may be yet to arrive.

The oceans are getting louder. And coastal areas are some of the noisiest, as in this underwater recording, covering 17 miles off the coast of Ocean City, Maryland. The noise could be a problem for underwater animals, which, like us, use sound to communicate. “Just like if we're in a raucous bar, we have to shout to each other. And they might have to do that too.” Helen Bailey is an underwater biologist at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science. She and her colleagues recorded two months of underwater sounds, in that same area off the coast of Maryland. They used automated software to take out 200 bottlenose dolphin whistles from the noise, and visually compared the spectrograms (声谱图). Here's a normal whistle. But what they found was that dolphins simplified their whistles and raised their pitch when they were competing with shipping noise, which apparently helps, but could also hurt their ability to communicate. “By using simpler calls, yes, there is a risk that they're not communicating as much in-formation as they would if it was quieter. Also for younger dolphins they actually learn these sounds from hearing other dolphins. So they're hearing this much simpler language.” The results and a few of those spectrograms are in the journal Biology Letters. The survey site is the proposed future home of a wind farm - which could mean lots of noise as the huge towers are set up. Until then, it's the long-lasting roar of ships and boats that Bailey wants people to think about carefully. “I think people think about boats in terms of the emissions (排放), just like with cars. And I think what we need to think about is that sound is also an emission.”

The exhibition combines a grand narrative of the contemporary lives of Chinese ethnic groups with vivid local scenery, connects ancient Chinese civilization to the new era and mirrors the evolution and rebirth of the traditional culture of the Chinese nation in modernization. The photographers taking part in the exhibition come from all over China and from various backgrounds such as university students or migrant workers. Some are amateur photographers, while others are professionals. Liu Hui is one of the photographers whose works are on display at the exhibition. His photos document his in-depth exploration of Daliyaboyi, a village in Yutian county, Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Over the past decade, Liu has recorded the lots of changes that have taken place in the village and the impact these have had on villagers' lives. He has taken more than 150, 000 photos of these villagers who originally lived in the desert. The photos at the exhibition focus on an old herdsman in the village. The herdsman and his family have benefited from local poverty-relief policies, moving from the desert to a new town with paved roads. Escaping from a tough environment, the herdsman establishes a new life for himself and his family that blends tradition and modernity. Yan Shuzhen's works have also been selected for the exhibition. In a connected series of photos, the photographer creates a window for viewers to appreciate a special traditional ceremony of the Mongolian ethnic group. The cutting hair ceremony is one of the most important and grand ceremonies on the path to adulthood among ethnic Mongolians. During the ceremony, elders send their best wishes for the future to the children taking part, while songs and speeches of praise full of traditional values reveal the rich characteristics of the ethnic group. At the Biennale, many realistic and moving works grabbed people's attention. These works demonstrate the progress of China's ethnic groups and show the backbone and full picture of the unified spirit that binds the country's diverse cultures. As a spiritual home for the unity of China's 56 ethnic groups, the Biennale has demonstrated its profound significance in promoting mutual understanding and unity among different ethnic groups in the country.

阅读下面短文,在空白处填入 1 个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。Calligraphy, the art of writing, was the visual art form prized above all others in traditional China. Painting was contemporary with calligraphy, sharing same tools—namely, brush and ink. Yet calligraphy was regarded a fine art long before painting. The status of calligraphy reflects the importance of the word in China. makes the written words distinctive is its visual form. However, despite its abstract (appear), calligraphy is not an abstract form. Chinese characters are dynamic, closely connected with the forces of nature and the kinesthetic (运动) energies of the human body. How can a simple character convey all this? The use of brush and ink (have) much to do with it. A calligrapher can control the (thick) of the ink by varying both the amount of water and the solid ink. Once he starts writing, by loading the brush sometimes with (much) ink or sometimes with less, he creates characters that resemble a shower of rocks here and a drop of dew (露珠) there. The Chinese written language (begin) to develop more than 3,000 years ago and (eventual) evolved into five basic script types. Over the centuries, calligraphers were free to write in any of them, ( depend) on the text's function. The calligraphic tradition remains alive today. |

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。When my daughters reached the third and fourth grades, I occasionally allowed them to walk to and from school alone if the weather permitted. One warm spring day, a little dog followed them home after school. It had short legs and long lovely ears, with a fawn-colored coat. It was the cutest dog I had ever seen and the girls begged me to keep it. The dog was barely twelve weeks old. It had no collar or identifying marks of any sort. I didn't know what to do. I thought about running an advertisement in the lost-and-found but I really didn't want to. It would break the kids' hearts if someone should show up. Besides, its owners should have watched it more closely. By the end of the week the dog was part of our family. It was very intelligent and good with the girls. The following week something told me to check the lost-and-found section in the local paper. One particular advertisement jumped out at me and my heart pounded with fear at what I read. Someone was begging for the return of a lost dog in the neighborhood of our grade school. They sounded desperate. My hand shook. I couldn't bring myself to pick up the phone. Instead, I pretended I hadn't seen the advertisement. I quickly put paper away in the drawer and continued with my dusting. I never said a word about it to the kids or my husband. By now we had named the dog. It looked like a Molly, so that was what we called it. It followed the girls everywhere they went. When they went outside, it was one step behind them. When they did housework, it was there to lend a hand. There was only one problem with this otherwise perfect picture: my conscience (良心) was bothering me. I knew in my heart I had to call that number and see if our Molly was the dog they were desperately seeking. It was the most difficult thing I've ever done. Paragraph 1: With mixed feelings, I finally picked up the receiver and dialed. Paragraph 2: One look at Molly and the woman's face lit up like a Christmas tree. |
